Book Short Summary:

The 2019 edition of firstwriter.com’s bestselling directory for writers is the perfect book for anyone searching for literary agents, book publishers, or magazines. It contains over 1,300 listings, including revised and updated listings from the 2018 edition, and over 400 brand new entries. • 84 pages of literary agent listings – that’s nearly as much as the Writer’s Market (53 pages) and the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook (39 pages) combined! • 100 pages of book publisher listings, compared to just 92 pages in the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook. • 90 pages of magazine listings – over 35% more than the 62 pages in the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook. All in a book that is 40% cheaper than the Writer’s Market ($29.99 RRP), and more than 50% cheaper than the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook (£25.00 RRP). Subject indexes for each area provide easy access to the markets you need, with specific lists for everything from romance publishers, to poetry magazines, to literary agents interested in thrillers. International markets become more accessible than ever, with listings that cover both the main publishing centres of New York and London, as well as markets in other English speaking countries. With more and more agents, publishers, and magazines accepting submissions online, this international outlook is now more important than ever. There are no adverts, no advertorials, and no obscure listings padding out hundreds of pages. By including only what’s important to writers – contact details for literary agents, publishers, and magazines – this directory is able to provide more listings than its competitors, at a substantially lower price. The book also allows you to create a subscription to the firstwriter.com website for free until 2020. This means you can get free access to the firstwriter.com website, where you can find even more listings, and also benefit from other features such as advanced searches, daily email updates, feedback from users about the markets featured, saved searches, competitions listings, searchable personal notes, and more. “I know firsthand how lonely and dispiriting trying to find an agent and publisher can be. So it's great to find a resource like firstwriter.com that provides contacts, advice and encouragement to aspiring writers. I've been recommending it for years now!” ~ Robin Wade; literary agent at the Wade & Doherty Literary Agency Ltd, and long-term firstwriter.com subscriber

Book Short Summary:

Ross Rocklynne (1913-1988) was the pen name used by Ross Louis Rocklin, an American science fiction author active in the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Born in 1913 in Ohio, Rocklynne was a regular contributor to the science fiction pulps. He was a professional guest at the first World Science Fiction Convention in 1939. Despite his numerous appearances and solid writing, Rocklynne never quite achieved the fame of his contemporaries Robert A. Heinlein, L. Sprague DeCamp, and Isaac Asimov. His most well known story is probably "The Men and the Mirror," first published in 1938. Rocklynne partially retired from writing in the late 1950s, but made a notable return in the 1970s when his novelette "Ching Witch " was included in Harlan Ellison's original anthology, Again, Dangerous Visions (1972). "Ching Witch " was later nominated for a Nebula award. This volume contains an annotated bibliography of Ross Rocklynne's work. It features an introduction by Arthur Jean Cox, plus an index.

Book Short Summary:

Narratives of Community in the Black British Short Story offers the first systematic study of black British short story writing, tracing its development from the 1950s to the present with a particular focus on contemporary short stories by Hanif Kureishi, Jackie Kay, Suhayl Saadi, Zadie Smith, and Hari Kunzru. By combining a postcolonial framework of analysis with Jean-Luc Nancy’s deconstructive philosophy of community, the book charts key tendencies in black British short fiction and explores how black British writers use the short story form to combat deeply entrenched notions of community and experiment with non-essentialist alternatives across differences of ethnicity, culture, religion, and nationality.

Book Short Summary:

The 2021 edition of firstwriter.com’s bestselling directory for writers returns in a new, larger format, with more than twice as many listings of literary agents, literary agencies, book publishers, and magazines. It now contains over 3,000 listings, including revised and updated listings from the 2020 edition, and over 2,000 brand new entries. Finding the information you need is now quicker and easier than ever before, with new tables and an expanded index, and unique paragraph numbers to help you get to the listings you’re looking for. A variety of new tables help you navigate the listings in different ways, including a new Table of Authors, which lists over 3,000 authors and tells you who represents them, or who publishes them, or both. The number of genres in the index has exploded from under 100 in the last edition to over 500 in this one. So, for example, while there was only one option for “Romance” in the previous edition, you can now narrow this down to Historical Romance, Fantasy Romance, Supernatural / Paranormal Romance, Contemporary Romance, Diverse Romance, Erotic Romance, Feminist Romance, Christian Romance, or even Amish Romance. The new edition includes: • 128 pages of literary agent and literary agency listings – that’s more than the Writer’s Market (75 pages) and the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook (39 pages) combined! • 82 pages of book publisher listings, compared to 91 pages in the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook – but with a page size more than 70% larger this is like getting an extra 50 pages. • 64 pages of magazine listings compared to 63 pages in the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook. Thanks to the difference in page size, this is the equivalent of 40 extra pages. All in a book that is 30% cheaper than the Writer’s Market ($29.99 RRP), and 50% cheaper than the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook (£25.00 RRP). The book also allows you to create a subscription to the firstwriter.com website for free until 2022. First published in 1978, Silences single-handedly revolutionized the literary canon. In this classic work, now back in print, Olsen broke open the study of literature and discovered a lost continentthe writing of women and working-class people. From the excavated testimony of authors letters and diaries we learn the many ways the creative spirit, especially in those disadvantaged by gender, class and race, can be silenced. Olsen recounts the torments of Melville, the crushing weight of criticism on Thomas Hardy, the shame that brought Willa Cather to a dead halt, and struggles of Virginia Woolf, Olsens heroine and greatest exemplar of a writer who confronted the forces that would silence her. This 25th-anniversary edition includes Olsens now infamous reading lists of forgotten authors and a new introduction and author preface.

Book Short Summary:

For a free 30-day online trial to this title, visit www.sagepub.com/freetrial In the academic world, the term "science communication" refers both to a set of professions (such as science journalism and public information work) and to an interdisciplinary scholarly research specialization. Much of this research is aimed at improving our understanding of the best ways to communicate complex information, especially to people who are not scientists. Science communication specialists are concerned with giving people useful information about health, environment, and technology – as well as science itself. In order to do this, we also need to improve our understanding of how people think, form opinions, and process information. Additionally, professional practitioners in science communication are engaged in strategic and ethical decisions every day, such as: How should reporters cover the issue of climate change? Should the views of scientists who do not believe that climate change has been caused by human activity be included alongside the views of those who do, in order to give a "balanced" story, or does this mislead the public into thinking that both of these positions are equally accepted within the scientific community? The Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Communication provides information on the entire range of interrelated issues in this interdisciplinary field in one place, along with clear suggestions on where to begin the search for more. Geared towards undergraduate and graduate students in journalism, communication, mass communication, and media studies, as well as towards working journalists, public information officers, and public relations specialists, this encyclopedia introduces this vast, fascinating field while challenging the reader to question assumptions inherent in communication across disciplinary boundaries. Book Short Summary:

This “amusing and elegantly written” romp takes readers on a wild ride through the life of Robert Parkin Peters (The New York Times Book Review)—a liar, bigamist, and fraudulent priest who tricked some of the brightest minds of his generation. One day in November 1958, the celebrated historian Hugh Trevor–Roper received a curious letter. It was an appeal for help, written on behalf of a student at Magdalen College, with the unlikely claim that he was being persecuted by the Bishop of Oxford. Curiosity piqued, Trevor–Roper agreed to a meeting. It was to be his first encounter with Robert Parkin Peters: plagiarist, bigamist, fraudulent priest, and imposter extraordinaire. The Professor and the Parson is a witty and charming portrait of eccentricity, extraordinary narcissism, and a life as wild and unlikely as any in fiction. Motivated not by money but by a desire for prestige, Peters lied, stole, and cheated his way to academic positions and religious posts from Cambridge to New York. Frequently deported, and even more frequently discovered, he left a trail of destruction including seven marriages (three of which were bigamous) and an investigation by the FBI. "I was captivated from start to finish by this utterly mad, and wholly delightful story of chicanery and fantasy, and which involves a man who relentlessly duped our most cherished institutions of godly pursuit and higher learning. Plus I learned how to defrock a priest, always good to have on hand in these troubling times." —Simon Winchester, author of The Perfectionists
