Book Excerpt :

This thrilling adventure story from the celebrated author of The Call of the Wild traces a wolf-dog’s epic journey from savage beast to man’s best friend Three men traverse the frozen landscape of the Yukon Territory on a sled—two stand upright, one lies dead in a coffin. Stalked by a pack of starving wolves, the travelers are out of ammunition and low on food. When night falls, the wolves will make their final assault. The men’s time is running short, but White Fang’s story is just beginning. Part wolf, part dog, White Fang is a hunter without a pack, at home neither in the camp nor in the wilderness. From the banks of the frozen Klondike river to the teeming streets of Gold Rush–era San Francisco, White Fang never stops fighting—first to survive, and then to find a home. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Book Short Summary:

“One of London’s most interesting and ambitious works”-Robert Greenwood White Fang is an allegorical adventure story about a part wolf, part dog who is born in the violent, harsh environment of the Canadian Yukon territory. The novel begins with two men attempting to bring a corpse back to civilization as they are followed by a pack of starving wolves. The novel, in its second act, switches to the perspective of the wolves. As a pup, White Fang endures battles of survival with his mother, One-Eye, against other wolves and a lynx. When One-Eye is in the close vicinity to a Native Indian village, she is recognized as an animal who had been part of the encampment at one point. Grey Beaver, a young hunter, adopts White Fang. The other dogs and pups resent the new addition to the village, and torment White Fang, who in turn becomes contentious. He is sold to a dog fighter, and into a brutal life of violence. He is eventually rescued and brought to California, to start a very different life in the care of a loving master and his family. Although White Fang has become a very popular classic among readers, as an allegorical novel it is of great interest to sophisticated readers. The book has been adapted into many film versions, TV series, and animations. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of White Fang is both modern and readable.

Book Short Summary:

The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean towards each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness--a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild. But there _was_ life, abroad in the land and defiant. Down the frozen waterway toiled a string of wolfish dogs. Their bristly fur was rimed with frost. Their breath froze in the air as it left their mouths, spouting forth in spumes of vapour that settled upon the hair of their bodies and formed into crystals of frost. Leather harness was on the dogs, and leather traces attached them to a sled which dragged along behind. The sled was without runners. It was made of stout birch-bark, and its full surface rested on the snow....

Book Short Summary:

White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. This adventure masterpiece is not only a vivid account of the Klondike gold rush and North American Indian life, but it is also an intriguing study of the effects different environments have on an individual. Half wolf, half dog, White Fang fully understands the cruelty of both nature and humans. After nearly starving to death during the frigid Arctic winter, he’s taken in first by a man who “trains” him through constant whippings, and then by another who forces him to participate in vicious dogfights. Follow White Fang as he overcomes these obstacles and finally meets someone who offers him kindness and love. Will White Fang's life be any easier now?

Book Short Summary:

White Fang is a novel by Jack London, published in 1906. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild (1903). Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the wolf-dog, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. As early as 1925, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations.

Book Short Summary:

A bold mix of realism, allegory, adventure, and progressive politics, this collection features Jack London’s most profound and moving literary works The Call of the Wild, London’s elemental masterpiece about a dog learning to survive in the wilderness, sees pampered pet Buck snatched from his home and set to work as a sled-dog during the Klondike Gold Rush. White Fang, set in the frozen tundra and boreal forests of Canada’s Yukon territory, is the story of a wolf-dog hybrid struggling to survive in a human society every bit as brutal as the natural world. This volume of London’s famed Northland novels also includes an early feminist story “The Night-Born,” and a pro-labor story “South of the Slot.” These works echo and enrich the themes of The Call of the Wild and White Fang with their unique emphases on the primordial, the instinctual, and the quest for social justice. London’s narratives in this volume focus on issues of continuing relevance to contemporary readers, including the value of the wilderness, animal rights, socioeconomic oppression, and gender inequity. This edition also includes an introduction by preeminent London scholar, Earle Labor, as well as a comprehensive biographical note on London's life and works by scholar and executive coordinator of the Jack London Society, Kenneth K. Brandt. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book Short Summary:

This is a story that came back to me and that I made up some fifty years ago when I was in high school. I won an award for my story about this animal that was part dog and part wolf. He was pure white and had the body of a husky. His five senses were his extra special features, and they were more acute than a blind man’s by almost ten times. He was also graceful and could sneak up on someone like a sniper. He was very, very quiet. His master was the royal Canadian mounted police officer Captain Steven Pole. He loved that animal and named it White Fang. He was part of the RCMP and was a K9 specialist. Both Steve and Fang went out on a lot of assignments as their arrest record was A+. There is only one case not solved, and that is the death of his father while on duty in the Northwest Territories. It was thought there were escaped convicts trying to cross from Canada to USA by way of the Rocky Mountains or the northern lights passage by posing as a mature couple on an adventure. They needed a guide who knew the pass well, and that was Steve’s dad, who drew the duty. Fang was very restless all day around Steve. Finally, Steve started to feel something was wrong. His dad was not answering any of his pages or his walkie-talkie. Steve and Fang decided to follow the trail Red gave him. It was not long at all before all three knew something was not right.

Book Short Summary:

The Call of the Wild—Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time 'To this day Jack London is the most widely read American writer in the world,' E. L. Doctorow wrote in The New York Times Book Review. Generally considered to be London's greatest achievement, The Call of the Wild brought him international acclaim when it was published in 1903. His story of the dog Buck, who learns to survive in the bleak Yukon wilderness, is viewed by many as his symbolic autobiography. 'No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Call of the Wild,' said H. L. Mencken. 'Here, indeed, are all the elements of sound fiction.' White Fang (1906), which London conceived as a 'complete antithesis and companion piece to The Call of the Wild,' is the tale of an abused wolf-dog tamed by exposure to civilization. Also included in this volume is 'To Build a Fire,' a marvelously desolate short story set in the Klondike, but containing all the elements of a classic Greek tragedy. 'The quintessential Jack London is in the on-rushing compulsive-ness of his northern stories,' noted James Dickey. 'Few men have more convincingly examined the connection between the creative powers of the individual writer and the unconscious drive to breed and to survive, found in the natural world. . . . London is in and committed to his creations to a degree very nearly unparalleled in the composition of fiction.'
