Book Excerpt :

Tells the story of a young couple in love during World War II, and the difficulties they faced both at war and on the home front. We Are Going to Be Lucky tells the story of a first-generation Jewish American couple separated by war, captured in their own words. Lenny and Diana Miller were married just one year before America entered World War II. Deeply committed to social justice and bonded by love, both vowed to write to one another daily after Lenny enlisted in 1943. As Lenny made his way through basic training in Mississippi to the beaches of Normandy and eventually to the Battle of the Bulge, Diana struggled financially, giving up her job as a machinist to become a mother. Their contributions to the war effort—Lenny’s crucial missions as an Army scout and Diana’s work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard—are the backdrop to their daily correspondence, including insightful discussions of democracy, politics, and economic hardship. Faced with grueling conditions overseas, Lenny managed to preserve every letter his wife sent, mailing them back to her for safekeeping. The couple’s extraordinary letters, preserved in their entirety, reveal and reflect the excruciating personal sacrifices endured by both soldiers at war and their young families back home. After decades of gathering dust, their words have been carefully transcribed and thoughtfully edited and annotated by Elizabeth L. Fox, Lenny and Diana’s daughter. Elizabeth L. Fox has served for more than twenty years in a leadership role on the National Board of Hadassah, where her responsibilities include writing, training, and public speaking. She has a BA in history from the City College of New York and an MA in vocational rehabilitation counseling from New York University. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Book Short Summary:

Through the Flames is a novel about a promising high school quarterback with a bright future in football. He has the adoration of his team, his school and his girl. Who could ask for more? True, Larry Allen's family is a shade on the dysfunctional side, but who has a perfect home life these days, right? His dad is away playing pro ball and training half of the year, his mother is a basket case since his older sister died (Book One of the Fire Series: Into the Fire) and his older brother has lost his drive to go anywhere in life. But Larry has it all together and is determined to be a success and take his team to the championships one more time before he graduates and signs with the college of his choice. Things are just great... until Dad gets badly injured in play and Larry gets taken out by a member of the opposing team who has it in for him. The plot thickens from there and Larry finds himself suddenly uncertain what the future will hold for him. Denise Bartlett has worked with people with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) over the years and has seen some of the devastating effects of TBI. Her experience with TBI survivors is what fueled this story, and she has done her homework to make this tale a realistic, gripping glimpse of what goes on in the sports arena. The hope is that Through the Flames can help raise awareness about concussion in contact sports, particularly for young athletes, and the consequences of not taking head injuries seriously enough.

Now as he works to build a Texas oil empire, he must also keep his beautiful wife, Elise, and their son, Francis, content. Unfortunately, for Barton, this challenge is not easy as temptation and greed influence his every move. Elise is a devoted mother who also faithfully follows Barton despite his callousness and lies. She knows his soul and believes he is the beast that only her love can tame. Francis is a resilient boy who has learned early that when it comes to his father, he comes last. As he matures, strives for perfection, and exceeds his parents expectations, Francis still manages to fall into the shadow of their demanding lives. As temptation knocks on his own door, life leads Francis down a new path where every decision comes with consequences and he ponders whether he is now a victim of the dreaded La Barre family curse. In this continuing multi-generational tale, fate and luck, play havoc with the Barre family during post-World War II Texas where love appears to be the only key to bliss.

Book Short Summary:

From the annals of Vermont Commons: Voices of Independence news journal comes a new collection of essays. The 21st century United States is no longer a functioning republic, but an unreform’able Empire unresponsive to the needs and concerns of its own citizens. Most Likely To Secede features a collection of provocative and forward-thinking essays from 29 contributors to Vermont Commons: Voices of Independence news journal. Written by cutting-edge citizens and entrepreneurs, the essays call for economic relocalization and political independence for Vermont, and, in some cases, nonviolent secession of the state (once its own 18th century republic) from the U.S. of Empire and the peaceful dissolution of the United States as a whole. Exploring well beyond the media-manufactured boundaries of Left and Right, Most Likely To Secede advocates for a 21st century world in which collective decisions about finance, fuel, food, and culture are removed from a centralized corporate imperial United States, and returned to regional and local control. As the only state to once exist as its own republic, Vermont is uniquely poised to lead a national conversation on 2st century decentralization, and Most Likely To Secede shows us the way.

Sierra Leone was granted full status as an Independent member country of the British Commonwealth on 26th April 1961. In April 1971 it became a Republican State. As it celebrates 50 years of life as an independent nation feelings are mixed as to how successful, or progressive things have turned out to be; but celebrate we must. The author has, therefore taken the opportunity to encapsulate in a semi-fictional Trilogy some random thoughts of ordinary people who still think of the good old days, as they wrestle with the continuing difficulties being experienced in the ordinary aspects of daily life, as we strive for a better future.

And the more Graver digs, the more he’s convinced that the trail of corruption leads back to his own command. Now he must do the most dangerous thing any cop can do: go outside the department. He must enter a shadowy labyrinth of lies and deception where he can trust no one, not even his closest friends and colleagues. When America is taken over by the Army of Allah, it’s up to a team of rebel survivalists to save the nation in this military thriller. Book Short Summary:

A cache of diamonds is stolen in Phoenix. The prime suspect is former Maricopa County Sheriff Mike Peralta, now a private investigator. Disappearing into Arizona's mountainous High Country, Peralta leaves his business partner and longtime friend David Mapstone with a stark choice. He can cooperate with the FBI, or strike out on his own to find Peralta and what really happened. Mapstone knows he can count on his wife Lindsey, one of the top "good hackers" in law enforcement. But what if they've both been betrayed? Mapstone is tested further when the new sheriff wants him back as a deputy, putting to use his historian's expertise to solve a very special cold case. The stakes turn deadly when David and Lindsey are stalked by a trained killer whose specialty is "suiciding" her targets. In depressed, post-recession Phoenix, every certainty has become scrambled, from the short hustle of the powerful real-estate industry to the loyalties Mapstone once took for granted. Could Peralta really be a jewel thief or worse? The deeper Mapstone digs into the world of sun-baked hustlers, corrupt cops, moneyed retirees, and mobsters, the more things are not what they seem. Ultimately, Mapstone must risk everything to find the truth. High Country Nocturne is an ambitious, searing, and gritty novel, with a fast-paced story as hard-edged as the stolen diamonds themselves.

2022 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Novel “A fantastic novel. . . . You are going to like this a lot.”—Stephen King “What’s more thrilling than a fictional character speaking to us in a voice we haven’t heard before, a voice so authentic and immediate—think Huck Finn, Holden Caulfield, Mattie Ross—that we suspect it must’ve been there all along, that we somehow managed to miss it? Daniel, the protagonist of Will Leitch’s smart, funny, heartbreaking new novel How Lucky, is just such a voice, and I’m not sure it will ever completely leave my head, or that I want it to.”—Richard Russo For readers of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Nothing to See Here, a first novel as suspenseful and funny as it is moving, the unforgettable story of a fiercely resilient young man living with a physical disability, and his efforts to solve a mystery unfolding right outside his door. Daniel leads a rich life in the university town of Athens, Georgia. He’s got a couple close friends, a steady paycheck working for a regional airline, and of course, for a few glorious days each Fall, college football tailgates. He considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy—despite the fact that he’s suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair. Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he’s not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he’s almost sure he sees her being kidnapped...

Book Short Summary:

The New York Times bestseller with more than 1 million copies sold worldwide Inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds. “Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn't be more timely.” —Glamour It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety. As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere. An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Book Short Summary:

IS LUCK REAL? Why do some people lead happy successful lives whilst other face repeated failure and sadness? Why do some find their perfect partner whilst others stagger from one broken relationship to the next? What enables some people to have successful careers whilst others find themselves trapped in jobs they detest? And can unlucky people do anything to improve their luck - and lives? Ten years ago, Professor Richard Wiseman decided to search for the elusive luck factor by investigating the actual beliefs and experiences of lucky and unlucky people. The results reveal a radical new way of looking at luck: in many important ways, we make our own luck. If you think you're unlucky, that bad luck may be the direct result of you believing you're unlucky. Wiseman identifies the four simple behavioural techniques that have been scientifically proven to help you attract good fortune. He then shows how you can use these methods to revolutionise every area of your life - including your relationships, personal finances and career.

Book Short Summary:

Landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, fighting at Lone Pine, surviving Fromelles and suffering Bullecourt, George Martindale’s war experiences reflect a litany of our nation’s hallowed trials.

George described these actions for members of his family in the letters he sent home, forming a collection of his writings that is the basis of this book. He may well have become one of the great writers of twentieth century Australia had his life not ended prematurely as a result of the injuries he sustained on the Western Front.

George’s letters were a gift to his family but more so to posterity. They retain the scent of the trenches, and the stains of no man’s land. In them he honoured his mates, cherished his heritage and condemned falsities. His letters allow us to look back more than 100 years, and for his words to reach out to future generations.
