Book Excerpt :

In a strange realm, Roan was the strangest of all -- because he always looked the same: normal. Dreamland was the place where sleepers in the "real" world went when they dreamed, and the permanent residents might change their form without warning. In dreams, there's nothing unusual about talking to a giant rabbit who suddenly turns into a living fire hydrant without missing a beat in the conversation. But Roan was always...Roan. And that was very bizarre. But something sinister is going on in Dreamland. Their constantly changing world is created by the Seven Sleepers, and will continue to exist so long as at least one of the Sleepers is asleep and dreaming. Now someone is out to destroy Dreamland by eliminating them. And unless the nightmare plot is foiled, Dreamland and its inhabitants will vanish like a blown-out candle flame, bringing an end to all dreams.... At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Book Short Summary:

We met the self-opinionated, tactless Jack Gardner before in the "e;Honey Do List"e;, a recent Evvy Award winner. Ten years have rolled by since then, and he has become totally paranoid about his health. His fruitless search for the Fountain of Youth has turned him into a full-blown hypochondriac, and he stumbles through life in a medication-induced haze. Ringing in the ears and brain fog are now constant companions, but his real troubles begin when he falls asleep. Vivid dreams take hold of his mind, and he assumes a dozen different identities as he gallivants across the US, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, leaving a trail of mayhem in his wake. In turn rent collector, British diplomat, car salesman, stockbroker, travel writer, water engineer and Catholic priest, Jack comes into contact with a host of zany characters, joins a religious sect, goes completely blind while traveling on the London Tube, discovers he has a sister no one knew anything about, and finds himself smack in the middle of a nasty scandal involving a Chicago basketball star and a protection racketeer. His efforts to umpire a cricket match set two Indian villages at each other's throats, and his first celebrity wedding as a rookie priest barely escapes nationally televised melt down. He visits a local drinking hole seeking converts for his sect, has his first taste of "e;Resurrection Soup"e;, and finally wakes up, half naked, in a homeless shelter. Tense tales of human drama, liberally sprinkled with oral and situation humor.

Book Short Summary:

Larry lay under the trees upon the soft, green grass, with his hat tilted far forward over his eyes and his grimy hands clasped together beneath his head, wishing with all his might first one thing and then another, but always that it was not so warm. When the children had gone to school in the morning, they had seen Larry's figure, as they passed along the street, stretched out full-length beneath the trees near the gutter curbstone; and when they returned, there he was still. They looked at him with curiosity; and some of the boys even paused beside him and bent over to see if he were sunstruck. He let them talk about him and discuss him and wonder at him as they would, never stirring, and scarcely daring to breathe, lest they be induced to stay and question him. He wanted to be alone. He wanted to lie lazily under the trees, and watch the sunbeams as they flirted with the leaves, and hear the birds gossip with one another, and feel the breeze as it touched his hot temples and soothed him with its soft caresses.

In The City of Dreaming Books, Walter Moers transports us to a magical world where reading is a remarkable adventure. Book Short Summary:

Apple Best Books of 2021 Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal * Shortlisted for the Zocalo Book Prize From the New York Times bestselling author of Dreamland, a searing follow-up that explores the terrifying next stages of the opioid epidemic and the quiet yet ardent stories of community repair. Sam Quinones traveled from Mexico to main streets across the U.S. to create Dreamland, a groundbreaking portrait of the opioid epidemic that awakened the nation. As the nation struggled to put back the pieces, Quinones was among the first to see the dangers that lay ahead: synthetic drugs and a new generation of kingpins whose product could be made in Magic Bullet blenders. In fentanyl, traffickers landed a painkiller a hundred times more powerful than morphine. They laced it into cocaine, meth, and counterfeit pills to cause tens of thousands of deaths-at the same time as Mexican traffickers made methamphetamine cheaper and more potent than ever, creating, Sam argues, swaths of mental illness and a surge in homelessness across the United States. Quinones hit the road to investigate these new threats, discovering how addiction is exacerbated by consumer-product corporations. “In a time when drug traffickers act like corporations and corporations like traffickers,” he writes, “our best defense, perhaps our only defense, lies in bolstering community.” Amid a landscape of despair, Quinones found hope in those embracing the forgotten and ignored, illuminating the striking truth that we are only as strong as our most vulnerable. Weaving analysis of the drug trade into stories of humble communities, The Least of Us delivers an unexpected and awe-inspiring response to the call that shocked the nation in Sam Quinones's award-winning Dreamland.

Book Short Summary:

A compelling dual-narrated tale from Jennifer Latham that questions how far we've come with race relations. Some bodies won't stay buried. Some stories need to be told. When seventeen-year-old Rowan Chase finds a skeleton on her family's property, she has no idea that investigating the brutal century-old murder will lead to a summer of painful discoveries about the present and the past. Nearly one hundred years earlier, a misguided violent encounter propels seventeen-year-old Will Tillman into a racial firestorm. In a country rife with violence against blacks and a hometown segregated by Jim Crow, Will must make hard choices on a painful journey towards self discovery and face his inner demons in order to do what's right the night Tulsa burns. Through intricately interwoven alternating perspectives, Jennifer Latham's lightning-paced page-turner brings the Tulsa race riot of 1921 to blazing life and raises important questions about the complex state of US race relations--both yesterday and today.

Book Short Summary:

SJ“br> My best friend Crisanta Knight is quite good at storytelling—the sass, hyperbole, quick description of action. But I am not her, so I will be bringing my own voice to the table. While she went to Dreamland to wake a prince and princess from a sleeping curse, I stayed in Book to broker peace between the commons and our realm’s higher-ups—a choice I was confident in until my friends returned without Crisa. If I had been with them could I have saved her? Jason Normally I had a lot on my to-do list—hero classes, captain my Twenty-Three Skidd team, fighting bad guys. Now there were only three things on my list: 1) Deal with the fact Blue shut me down after I told her about my feelings for her; 2) Respect her viewpoint but also change her perspective; 3) Figure out where the frack Crisa disappeared to and bring her home. Daniel I was never sure I deserved to be called a “hero,” but I’d been trying to earn it. My friends needed me to be one. Yet, despite fighting my hardest, I failed and a friend slipped through the cracks. So I didn’t care if I could turn to stone by invoking Midnight Law—if it was my best shot at bringing her home, I would follow the enchantment to Oz, Wonderland, Earth, and wherever else it took me. Blue Things had already gotten complicated when Jason made his... pronouncement. But now Crisa was lost and in danger, our enemies set on forcing her to lose control of her Pure Magic so she’d turn dark and help them conquer our realm. Which meant I had to make sure the two heroes magically able to find her made the right moves, and be willing to shake up the world like a dang salad mixer to keep the peace and save what mattered most.

Book Short Summary:

As an adult book, Sam Quinones's Dreamland took the world by storm, winning the NBCC Award for General Nonfiction and hitting at least a dozen Best Book of the Year lists. Now, adapted for the first time for a young adult audience, this compelling reporting explains the roots of the current opiate crisis. In 1929, in the blue-collar city of Portsmouth, Ohio, a company built a swimming pool the size of a football field; named Dreamland, it became the vital center of the community. Now, addiction has devastated Portsmouth, as it has hundreds of small rural towns and suburbs across America. How that happened is the riveting story of Dreamland. Quinones explains how the rise of the prescription drug OxyContin, a miraculous and extremely addictive painkiller pushed by pharmaceutical companies, paralleled the massive influx of black tar heroin--cheap, potent, and originating from one small county on Mexico's west coast, independent of any drug cartel. Introducing a memorable cast of characters--pharmaceutical pioneers, young Mexican entrepreneurs, narcotics investigators, survivors, teens, and parents--Dreamland is a revelatory account of the massive threat facing America and its heartland.

Book Short Summary:

Area 51, Dreamland, Groom Lake, Paradise Ranch, Watertown Strip, the Box: all refer to the top-secret research installation, located a hundred miles north of Las Vegas, which, for many, has come to stand for all that is shadowy and nefarious about the military-industrial-intelligence complex. Built under the direction of the CIA in the 1950s, the base served as the original test site for the U-2 spy plane and F-117 stealth fighter jet. In more recent years, Area 51 has spurred public interest from its role in the government's $30 billion "Black Budget," from legal claims of worker illness due to toxic burning, and from sensational charges about captured alien spacecraft. It has also given birth to a feisty guerrilla subculture bent on exploding the secrecy surrounding this mysterious spot. David Darlington unfolds the history, legs, and characters involved with Area 51, weaving a weird tale of intrigue and outrage and UFOs that speaks volumes about popular culture and American democracy at the of the twentieth century.

Book Short Summary:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The complete, uncensored history of the award-winning The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as told by its correspondents, writers, and host. For almost seventeen years, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart brilliantly redefined the borders between television comedy, political satire, and opinionated news coverage. It launched the careers of some of today's most significant comedians, highlighted the hypocrisies of the powerful, and garnered 23 Emmys. Now the show's behind-the-scenes gags, controversies, and camaraderie will be chronicled by the players themselves, from legendary host Jon Stewart to the star cast members and writers-including Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, and Steve Carell - plus some of The Daily Show's most prominent guests and adversaries: John and Cindy McCain, Glenn Beck, Tucker Carlson, and many more. This oral history takes the reader behind the curtain for all the show's highlights, from its origins as Comedy Central's underdog late-night program to Trevor Noah's succession, rising from a scrappy jester in the 24-hour political news cycle to become part of the beating heart of politics-a trusted source for not only comedy but also commentary, with a reputation for calling bullshit and an ability to effect real change in the world. Through years of incisive election coverage, passionate debates with President Obama and Hillary Clinton, feuds with Bill O'Reilly and Fox, and provocative takes on Wall Street and racism, The Daily Show has been a cultural touchstone. Now, for the first time, the people behind the show's seminal moments come together to share their memories of the last-minute rewrites, improvisations, pranks, romances, blow-ups, and moments of Zen both on and off the set of one of America's most groundbreaking shows.

Book Short Summary:

Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye are two of Canada’s central cultural figures, colleagues and rivals whose careers unfolded in curious harmony even as their intellectual engagement was antagonistic. Poet, novelist, essayist and philosopher B.W. Powe, who studied with both of these formidable and influential intellectuals, presents an exploration of their lives and work in Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye: Apocalypse and Alchemy. Powe considers the existence of a unique visionary tradition of Canadian humanism and argues that McLuhan and Frye represent fraught but complementary approaches to the study of literature and to the broader engagement with culture. Examining their eloquent but often acid responses to each other, Powe exposes the scholarly controversies and personal conflicts that erupted between them, and notably the great commonalities in their writing and biographies. Using interviews, letters, notebooks, and their published texts, Powe offers a new alchemy of their thought, in which he combines the philosophical hallmarks of McLuhan’s “The medium is the message” and Frye’s “the great code.”

Book Short Summary:

What if the sleeping beauty never woke up? Once Upon a Dream marks the second book in a new YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. It should be simple--a dragon defeated, a slumbering princess in a castle, a prince poised to wake her. But when the prince falls asleep as his lips touch the fair maiden's, it is clear that this fairy tale is far from over. With a desperate fairy's last curse controlling her mind, Princess Aurora must escape from a different castle of thorns and navigate a dangerously magical landscape--created from her very own dreams. Aurora isn't alone--a charming prince is eager to join her quest, and old friends offer their help. But as Maleficent's agents follow her every move, Aurora struggles to discover who her true allies are and, moreover, who she truly is. Time is running out. Will the sleeping beauty be able to wake herself up?

Book Short Summary:

HOME ON THE STRANGE An Offbeat Mystery Jeff and Terry Winslow are tired of life in the big city. So it seems like fate when they run into Jeff’s old Veterinary school chum at a convention. Stewart Varney is doing service for the state of Nevada in a small town, paying back an obligation for a college grant, and is equally tired of the country life. They happily agree to swap lives for one year, and Jeff hands his practice to Stewart, while Terry takes a sabbatical from her job as an anthropology professor. Jeff and Terry arrive in the quirky town of Silver Peak to find a very different world from the one they left. The Mayor is a nudist, acid reject who lives in a copper-clad tower on the town’s highest hill, a brothel serves as the town’s gathering spot, prostitutes and prospectors are numerous, and the town’s most revered citizen is a burro that loves good coffee and watches Star Trek religiously. Jeff also discovers that he is not only the town Veterinarian, but also the town Doctor, one of many things Varney neglected to mention. From their very strange home that also serves as his office, they become acquainted with the townsfolk and their various maladies. Jeff biopsies a growth from Jenny the burro, when her owner, Jack Derry, asks the couple to accompany him to a strange find out in the desert. After a long hike, they come upon a flexible, metallic, cylindrical object half-buried in the sand that was exposed by the latest monsoon. They need help to get it out, and enlist the town’s leaders, including the hefty, female cafe owner, Biggie, and brothel owner, Darrel Barlowe. They store what they come to call “whateverthehellitis” in the Winslow’s stable. Meanwhile, Terry notices that Marilyn, one of the local prostitutes, has been spending a lot of time at the Copper Castle, home of the secretive mayor known as Zeus. She confronts the girl, pays her for information about the strange man, and learns that he insists on nudity, has no penis, and is paying her to work on a large item of unknown origin in the big tower, which is surrounded by a mammoth junkyard. Soon after in San Francisco, Stewart Varney gets a mysterious call saying that “they found it”. Jenny’s biopsy is cancerous, and the whole town pitches in to help pay for her treatment. The “whateverthehellitis” group decides to try to get inside their find. They use every possible method, including explosives and a chainsaw, but are unable to enter. During the process, Marilyn calls to tell them that State Troopers are on their way to the Winslow’s on a tip that they are growing Marijuana, but stopped for some action at the brothel. She keeps them busy, while in a last ditch effort, Jack, Biggie, Terry, Jenny the mule, and Jeff disrobe and visit the mayor to see what he knows. They walk up the high peak to find him waiting. He explains that he is from the Vega star cluster, and was sent to recover a probe that vanished here, unable to withstand Earth’s atmosphere. His people have transcended matter, and live as pure light and energy. The probe is the second of two, as the first was the craft in Roswell. He disguised himself as an acid-freak to explain his strange behavior when he first landed in the sixties, and built the Winslow residence and then the Copper Castle as devices to try to find the probe, but the local uranium deposits made it very difficult. His companion, Jenny, was traded with money to Jack for the town, in the hope that the prospector might come upon the probe in his travels. Zeus regards clothing as a light barrier and, therefore, pollution. Sensing trouble at the stable, he spirits them all back to the probe as light. At the stable, the cops have arrived, but are delayed by the naked forms of Terry and Biggie outside, while the men try to figure out how to hide or remove the probe. But, it’s too late, and Zeus and the others hide in the craft-- one must be naked to ent

Book Short Summary:

“A haunting, engrossing portrait of two families – one white, one Black – whose lives are woven together and then shattered” (The Washington Post) by the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Oil-boom opulence, fear, hate, and lynchings are the backdrop for this riveting novel about one of the worst incidents of violence in American history. Althea Whiteside, an oil-wildcatter’s high-strung white wife, and her enigmatic Black maid, Graceful, share a complex connection during the tense days of the Oklahoma oil rush. Their juxtaposing stories – and those of others close to them – unfold as tensions mount to a violent climax in the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, during which whites burned the city’s prosperous Black neighborhood to the ground. The massacre becomes the crucible that melds and tests each of the character in this masterful exploration of the American race story and the ties that bind us irrevocably to one another.
