Book Excerpt :

In 1940s Los Angeles, an unidentified murder victim is found bisected in a shadowy lot. A catchy nickname is given her in jest—"The Virgin Tramp"—and suddenly a "nice little homicide that would have drifted off the front pages in a couple of days" becomes a storm center. Two brothers, Tom and Des Spellacy, are at the heart of this powerful novel of Irish-Catholic life in Southern California just after World War II. Played in the film version by Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro respectively, Tom is a homicide detective and Des is a priest on the rise within the Church. The murder investigation provides the background against which are played the ever changing loyalties of the two brothers. Theirs is a world of favors and fixes, power and promises, inhabited by priests and pimps, cops and contractors, boxers and jockeys and lesbian fight promoters and lawyers who know how to put the fix in. A fast-paced and often hilarious classic of contemporary fiction, True Confessions is about a crime that has no solutions, only victims. More important, it is about the complex relationship between Tom and Des Spellacy, each tainted with the guilt and hostility that separate brothers.

Book Short Summary:

A current pro player takes fans on a pseudonymous trip through one of the most infamous years of football—the very long, sometimes funny, often controversial 2013-2014 season—sharing raucous, behind-the-scenes, on-the-field, and in-the-locker-room truth about life in the National Football League. “Well, to hell with being safe. I’m going to be honest.” Johnny Anonymous' life goal was to be nothing greater or less than the Best NFL Back-Up of All Time™. For two years, he was content earning hundreds of thousands of dollars to stand on the sidelines doing absolutely nothing. But early in his third year, a starting lineman is injured, and he suddenly finds himself on the field. For most players, this moment is a dream come true. But not so for our author, one of the incredibly rare birds in football who reach the highest echelons, but who actually hate America’s favorite game. That’s right. Johnny Anonymous hates football. He hates what it does to his body, his brain, his life. Luckily, he can see the humor in his own situation, but also in the machinations of the NFL. Part truth-telling narrative, part whip-smart commentary that only a true insider could bring, part hilarious, NFL Confidential gives football fans a look at a world most would give anything to see, and gives non-fans a wild ride through the strange, and sometimes disturbing customs and realities of football today. Here is a truly unaffiliated look at the nation’s biggest, most lucrative pastime over the course of one of its most transformative seasons. From hard-to-stomach diets, showdowns in the weight room, shenanigans in the locker room, the looming dread of being cut from the team, the racial issues that still exist in modern-day football, the rock-star lifestyle that players find themselves able to afford and sometimes enjoy a little too much, the notion of being lauded in a league plagued by controversy and the sharp contrast between the love/hate of the game and the reality of the job, Johnny reveals a never-before-seen side of the NFL.

Book Short Summary:

In this O Me of Little Faith Ebook, author Jason Boyett brings you a transparent and personal account of his own of struggles with doubts and unbelief in living out his faith. With humor and frankness, Boyett uses personal anecdotes and a fresh look at Scripture to explore the realities of pursuing Christ through a field of doubt. After three decades of knowing God, understanding Christianity, and living a Christian life, Boyett has come to the place where he can voice the tough questions and travel the road of uncertainty with blinders off, candor on. The message along the way is one of encouragement: Relax. Rely on the grace of a merciful God, a kind father who realizes that his finite creatures must have doubts, should have questions, and will have trouble making sense of an infinite Creator. Ultimately, Boyett concludes that doubt and faith are not polar opposites, but actually work together, existing side-by-side. Uplifting, entertaining, hopeful, O Me of Little Faith will strike a chord with you and any Christian who's dealing with the uncertainties of living life in pursuit of a God who occasionally seems to disappear.

Book Short Summary:

This book is the product of a life to death and back to life experience that changed my perspective on the nature of work, career commitment, personal goals, and ultimately, the meaning of success. Health challenge recovery compelled me to evaluate life forever from a fresh perspective. Many books are written to convince us to do more. We are often told to be successful we must be incessantly engaged squeezing in other essentials, if we can. It is the frenetic, hyperactive lifestyle to which we have been coerced. We are pressured to take on more than we can, accelerate everything, and maximize all we do to the hilt. We feel we must be all things to all people, never realizing NO to be a complete sentence. I know what it means to take on the world at once. Blessed with many gifts, talents and skills, I thought I was able to do it all. The beauty of life is really a matter of integrating all of its salient components into a well-coordinated fabric. The proper fusion of life amalgamation enhances it value and makes life captivating and attractive. Creating synergies in the tapestry of life is the equipoise of life fulfillment. I was made to lie down and compelled to live my life differently. I share here the life changing truths that Ive learned and continue to learn. I am most eager to reach those who thrive on busyness and big goals as I have. Integrating life and work equitably is the message. I want to teach people who anxiously crave success a more excellent way to thrive and stay alive.

Book Short Summary:

Maybe you have days when you don’t feel so good about yourself… You’re not as tall or thin as you’d like, or maybe you don’t quite fit in or you just get left out. Well, you’ll start to feel a lot better about yourself once you start reading about Luke! Luke Lang calls himself a freak of nature. He’s a grown man who is the height of an average fifth grader—but that’s not what makes him a freak. He’s also about as wide as the average Sumo wrestler (but sadly, too uncoordinated to actually compete as a Sumo wrestler!). Luke knows what it’s like to feel left out or left behind. But he’s got a great sense of humor about his life’s misadventures, and he’s sharing the hysterical stories with you, in the hopes that you’ll feel encouraged—not just because you’re not as freaky as Luke, but because you’ll see that God can do extraordinary things through people who are pretty ordinary. While you’re reading Luke’s embarrassing stories, like the time he got beat up by a girl in Karate class or the time he was fighting for his life at Boy Scout camp, you’ll learn a little about God’s love and grace, and you’ll be reminded that you were created on purpose, for a purpose.

Book Short Summary:

It was a time when color television was the newest technology, the hula hoop was the latest fad and the evening news typically began with coverage of the Vietnam War. At 116 Nevada Street in Dubuque, Iowa, life was reasonably good. In this memoir, author Roger Neuhaus reminisces about his life in this time period, growing up as one of eight children in a strict Catholic family. Nostalgic and often humorous, (Mostly) True Confessions of a Recovering Catholic tells of a neighborhood filled with youthful adventures and an array of Catholic grade school and church experiences, including a colorful cast of mischievous characters. This anthology of anecdotes takes place from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s, addressing the changing times of the era. Neuhaus narrates tales of a simpler time and place, one filled with the wonder, excitement, and playfulness of youth. (Mostly) True Confessions of a Recovering Catholic shows how the teachings of the Catholic Church and his family’s core values worked to shape the future of one young man.

Here, giving hope to smart single women everywhere is Amy DeZellar, who bravely dedicated two years of her life to debunking common dating myths and documenting 50 of her dates. She's gone wine-tasting with Indentured Cats, a blind date who also happened to be blind; been accosted in a cornfield by Glitter Ball, a lounge musician who grew up with the Beatles; and found her artistic sentiments at odds with her desire for financial security when she simultaneously got involved with a painter named Harry Potter and a NASA super-computer designer named Teflon, all in her quest to chronicle the dating life of a regular girl and maybe even find true love. Each of the 50 chapters is dedicated to a different date, and includes the kinds of tips and sharp observations that only someone on the front lines can offer. Get ready to laugh, cry, and commiserate with Amy--and learn, as she did, a few things about finding the perfect man.

Book Short Summary:

These three dirty true confessions have been carefully selected for your entertainment. This book is dirty. Only by sharing the nitty-gritty, lurid details of a sex life gone awry can you ever hope to help another human suffering with a similar situation. As "Jessica M" from The Debutant's Fall writes, "Sometimes something good can come of even the most outrageous experience." These people are looking for redemption, freedom. They want to unburden themselves. Share their shame, their humiliation. They need to expose themselves to you. This book is true. Or at least as true as I can legally make it. Know, dear reader, that I have changed the names of all the people who have trusted me with their sexual confessions--these three scintillating tales of sexual degradation. I have also changed particular identifying details--like the names of cities, schools, and even the names of certain web sites--so that it's harder for the curious reader to match the stories in these pages to the real life people who have shared their torrid secrets. As the editor, I claim the right to title all the stories. There is a good reason for this. I am sure Jessica M. wouldn't have selected, The Debutante's Fall, as the title for her story. But once you read it, you will realize no other title will do. While it's titillating to read about how she prostituted herself with a black man in her sophomore year of college, the remarkable thing about Jessica's story is that she might as well still be prostituting herself today, as the wife of rising Fortune 500 executive. Or consider Brad W., an undergraduate student who took advantage of his friend when she had too much to drink in the story, He Sends His Regrets. Even if Brad was never convicted by a court, he has been condemned by his own mind. You will be shocked at the dirty things his own guilt drives him to do. Of course, he sends his regrets. What else could he send? And finally there is Milton Pearl who writes that he has nothing to confess in the story, The Price of Fame. Don't you believe him. Someone is responsible for his eighteen-year-old daughter's indoctrination into the porn entertainment industry. Milton may not have held the camera, but he held something in his hand as he enjoyed the fruit that industry has to offer, and that sort of willful indulgence makes him just as culpable of his daughter's career choice as if he were her producer. The people who wrote these stories are deviates. Philanders. They are devils and scallywags. You must read between the lines to come to your own conclusions about the truth of what they reveal. This book is better than an episode of the trashiest television talk show. This book was created in the spirit of The Phil Donahue Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Geraldo, and of course The Jerry Springer Show. While it's true that confession is good for the soul, it's even better for the libido. Huck Pilgrim

Book Short Summary:

In the true spirit of Hollywood Confidential, Scenes from the Life of a Glamorous Poodle follows the careers of the Divas on their rise to stardom. Scenes depict the "final cut" of the character's transformation required to "paint" the story. Given the royal treatment, each Star is hand tinted with non-toxic color (with the exception of digital makeup in the photoshop trailer!) then custom sculptured to perfection. Grab your popcorn, silence your cell phone, and enjoy this production from Divine Diva Studio! New York native Tony Franza has been a Master Stylist in the Hollywood hair industry for three decades. An awarded colorist, he has performed many celebrity makeovers. Behind the camera, Tony has a keen eye for composition, color and presentation. His skills as a fine art painter give him an edge in creating dramatic graphic images. Mavi Vaselli Martine from Rome, Italy has been a grooming designer for nearly two decades. Her heightened imagination and talents stem from her background in painting, sculpture, design, as well as training horses and being part of the Olympic Dressage team. Sharing a passion for dogs, art, and beauty, they joined creative forces to form Divine Diva Studio where their mission was to bring out the diva in these divine canines. Divine Diva Studio conceptualizes truly unique designs for their "living art" models, executes them through their non-toxic coloring technique, and portrays them with enchanting images to be cherished for a lifetime. They realized their cause was to educate mankind to recognize that you should not judge nor reject someone from what you see, as you never know what beauty lies within. This transformation lifts the confidence of the dogs and their human companions. You are no longer invisible when you are with your "Divine Diva" ... no one can resist interacting with them. Many of these dogs have a genuine story behind them. Not only are most of them rescues, they more often liberate the lives they enter having a profound healing impact. The makeover begins with the consultation of combining ideas, design inspiration, selecting colors, while taking the model's hair into consideration. Once the concept is set, Mavi executes the design through an all natural non-toxic color treatment and scissoring technique for the dogs. Tony sets the stage and lighting, producing the perfect zen ambiance for the photograph. Together they work as a team immortalizing the divas into impressive images. It is Divine Diva's journey to touch everyone's lives with the beauty of these gentle creatures. Mutually they share a goal to spread the healing dynamics of these Divas, who teach us daily to seize the present with their unconditional love. Their "living art" will bring you joy, releasing your inner child. This book is dedicated to the Divine Diva within us all waiting to be "unleashed!"

Book Short Summary:

Twenty-seven pioneering thinkers share their discovery of and commitment to feminism in this essential collection. In a series of autobiographical reflections, the contributors to True Confessions, including Gayatri Spivak, Sandra M. Gilbert, Hortense Spillers, and Martha Nussbaum, among others, tell us what experiences ground their activism and how they confronted the dilemmas they faced in the course of their training and careers. Why do a family's religious practices captivate or repel girls grappling with their parents' faith? What happens when a lesbian graduate student assumes she must be closeted, or when a female professor encounters hostility from other women on the faculty, or when a feminist professor is accused of sexually harassing her graduate students? Susan Gubar has selected the most influential thinkers in the humanities to elucidate the origins as well as the consequences of their commitment to feminism and its institutionalization in higher education. This is an indispensable book for anyone who cares about the place of feminism in today's landscape.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Recruiting Beautiful Models, Lighting, Photographing Nudes, Post-Processing Images, and Maybe Even Getting Paid to Do It. (third edition)Prior experience with nude models is not required to benefit from this how-to guide. This guide can be enjoyed by anyone, but is written for two main audiences: the accomplished photographer wanting insight from a peer, and the serious amateur wanting a guided introduction to the field. The female body has been an inspiration for artists since before the invention of photography. Naturally, nudes were one of the first subjects of photography as well. Although the guide covers the basics of nude photography, it is assumed that you have a digital camera that is more advanced than a point-and-shoot and that you already understand the basics of operating your camera. This book deals with female models. You won't find male models or advice on photographing non-models in this book.Finding Models: Nude photography entails more than just photographic technique, there is a huge interpersonal element; much more so than in any other kind of people photography. The guide addresses everything from finding models, to working with them long term. Most guides on photographic technique assume you've already found a willing model. This one assumes that you're having trouble ? or at least having trouble finding a model that you feel takes your work to the next level. It contains techniques for finding and recruiting models.Techniques: A range of processes are explained step-by-step. You'll find more than just a selection of photos and a dissection of each; you'll see full lighting diagrams as well as frank discussions of techniques and pitfalls in the days and weeks leading up to making a nude image. From finding your first nude model to selling your first nude photo, the guide presents complete, concise instruction on lighting, posing, and-post processing with Photoshop.

Then a troubling thought occurred to me, and as usual, I blurted it out without thinking first. ?I didn?t interrupt anything by coming up here this weekend, did I?? He turned those intense eyes in my direction again, and I nearly moaned with pure sensual delight. ?I don?t understand,? he hedged, but somehow I thought he might. ?Well?I mean, if you have a girlfriend or something?? Now that I?d started, I wasn?t quite sure how to finish. ?I didn?t mean to chase her away or anything.? ?I don?t have a girlfriend.? For one brief second, I thought I saw something flash in his eyes, but then it was gone again, and he seemed to withdraw inside himself. ?I haven?t had very much luck in that area of my life. I tend to want?too much.? Too much what? Time? Attention? Sex? ?Don?t worry if you hear me moving around tonight,? he added a while later, when he ushered me into my temporary bedroom. ?I sleepwalk a lot. But I never knock anything over, and I never wander too far. I hope I won?t wake you?but if I do, just go back to sleep. And I?ll see you in the morning.? He bent to kiss my cheek, but I managed to turn my head just enough that his mouth landed on mine. This time it seemed to fluster him a little, and he backed away with a hurried ?Good night, Franki!? The door closed behind him, and I heard his crisp footsteps retreating swiftly down the hall. I changed into my customary knee-length nightshirt and turned out my light, but I didn?t get in bed. If I did, I knew I?d start touching myself?it was a habit too deeply ingrained to break?and then I?d fall quickly asleep. I didn?t want to fall asleep; I wanted to stay awake and see if Max wandered around the house naked! I didn?t have long to wait. His bedroom was just down the hallway. About an hour after he?d closed the door firmly behind him, it quietly opened again. I was instantly on my feet. Silently I opened my own door, just in time to see his lanky figure wandering slowly around the far corner. Was he naked? I wasn?t sure, because the house was wreathed in shadows. But I thought so. Breathlessly I crept after him, and reached the great-room just as the screen door flapped closed. He was heading outside! Moonlight was slanting through the big clearing, turning everything silvery. His naked muscular body gleamed like a Greek god?s as he shuffled along, moving to the right a few steps, then changing direction and heading left. Then he stopped, and turned back toward the cabin. His eyes were closed, but his body was definitely awake! I think I made a choking sound as all the air in the room turned to thick soup. Maybe I didn?t have anything to use for comparison, but even I knew that his body was absolutely gorgeous!ÿ

Book Short Summary:

Provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the development of the science behind the psychology of false confessions Four decades ago, little was known or understood about false confessions and the reasons behind them. So much has changed since then due in part to the diligent work done by Gisli H. Gudjonsson. This eye-opening book by the Icelandic/British clinical forensic psychologist, who in the mid 1970s had worked as detective in Reykjavik, offers a complete and current analysis of how the study of the psychology of false confessions came about, including the relevant theories and empirical/experimental evidence base. It also provides a reflective review of the gradual development of the science and how it can be applied to real life cases. Based on Gudjonsson’s personal account of the biggest murder investigations in Iceland’s history, as well as other landmark cases, The Psychology of False Confessions: Forty Years of Science and Practice takes readers inside the minds of those who sit on both sides of the interrogation table to examine why confessions to crimes occur even when the confessor is innocent. Presented in three parts, the book covers how the science of studying false confessions emerged and grew to become a regular field of practice. It then goes deep into the investigation of the mid-1970s assumed murders of two men in Iceland and the people held responsible for them. It finishes with an in-depth psychological analysis of the confessions of the six people convicted. Written by an expert extensively involved in the development of the science and its application to real life cases Covers the most sensational murder cases in Iceland’s history Deep analysis of the ‘Reykjavik Confessions’ adds crucial evidence to understanding how and why coerced-internalized false confessions occur, and their detrimental and lasting effects on memory The Psychology of False Confessions: Forty Years of Science and Practice is an important source book for students, academics, criminologists, and clinical, forensic, and social psychologists and psychiatrists.
