Book Excerpt :

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A gripping true story of survival, bravery, and honor in the vast Arctic wilderness during World War II, from Mitchell Zuckoff, the author of New York Times bestseller Lost in Shangri-La On November 5, 1942, a US cargo plane slammed into the Greenland Ice Cap. Four days later, the B-17 assigned to the search-and-rescue mission became lost in a blinding storm and also crashed. Miraculously, all nine men on board survived, and the US military launched a daring rescue operation. But after picking up one man, the Grumman Duck amphibious plane flew into a severe storm and vanished. Frozen in Time tells the story of these crashes and the fate of the survivors, bringing vividly to life their battle to endure 148 days of the brutal Arctic winter, until an expedition headed by famed Arctic explorer Bernt Balchen brought them to safety. Mitchell Zuckoff takes the reader deep into the most hostile environment on earth, through hurricane-force winds, vicious blizzards, and subzero temperatures. Moving forward to today, he recounts the efforts of the Coast Guard and North South Polar Inc.—led by indefatigable dreamer Lou Sapienza—who worked for years to solve the mystery of the Duck’s last flight and recover the remains of its crew. A breathtaking blend of mystery and adventure Mitchell Zuckoff's Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices of our military personnel and a tribute to the everyday heroism of the US Coast Guard.

The Risk of Reading

  • Total of Pages : 208
  • Category : Literary Criticism
  • Members : 383
  • Pdf File: the-risk-of-reading.pdf

Book Short Summary:

The Risk of Reading is a defense of the idea that deep and close readings of literature can help us to understand ourselves and the world around us. It explores some of the meaning and implications of modern life through the deep reading of significant books. Waxler argues that we need "fiction" to give our so-called "real life" meaning and that reading narrative fiction remains crucial to the making of a humane and democratic society. Beginning by exploring the implications of thinking about the importance of story in terms of "real life", The Risk of Reading focuses on the importance of human language, especially language shaped into narrative, and how that language is central to the human quest for identity. Waxler argues that we are "linguistic beings," and that reading literary narrative is a significant way to enrich and preserve the traditional sense of human identity and knowledge. This is especially true in the midst of a culture which too often celebrates visual images, spectacle, electronic devices, and celebrity. Reading narrative, in other words, should be considered a counter-cultural activity crucial on the quest to "know thyself." Reading literature is one of the best opportunities we have today to maintain a coherent human identity and remain self-reflective individuals in a world that seems particularly chaotic and confusing. Each chapter takes up a well-known work of nineteenth- or twentieth-century literature in order to discuss more fully these issues, exploring, in particular, the notion of life as a journey or quest and the crucial relationship between language and our contingent everyday existence. Of particular interest along the way is the question of what literary narrative can teach us about our mortality and how stories offer opportunities to reflect on the ambivalent and profound meaning of mortal knowledge.

Book Short Summary:

This pioneering volume explores the Arctic as an important and highly endangered archive of knowledge about natural as well as human history of the anthropocene. Focusing on the Arctic as an archive means to investigate it not only as a place of human history and memory - of Arctic exploring, 'conquering' and colonizing -, but to take into account also the specific environmental conditions of the circumpolar region: ice and permafrost. These have allowed a huge natural archive to emerge, offering rich sources for natural scientists and historians alike. Examining the debate on the notion of ('natural') archive, the cultural semantics and historicity of the meaning of concepts like 'warm', 'cold', 'freezing' and 'melting' as well as various works of literature, art and science on Arctic topics, this volume brings together literary scholars, historians of knowledge and philosophy, art historians, media theorists and archivologists.

Book Short Summary:

PAIGE Logan McKinley. My ex. I knew he was trouble from the first moment I laid eyes on him. Fresh out of law school with a new job at one of San Diego’s biggest firms, I was supposed to focus on my career. No distractions, no men, and especially no office romances. Then I met Logan. He was cocky, smooth-talking, and gorgeous—a hotshot associate on the fast track to a partnership and exactly the kind of guy I needed to avoid. But he was relentless. He pursued me, intrigued me, and seduced me. And when I had no defenses left, my ambitions shifted, and I only wanted him. For a while, that was enough. But no one’s perfect. The man who put a ring on my finger isn’t who I thought he was, so I left. Now he’s back in my life, and he’s pushing me into a corner. It’s time to show him how hard I can push back. LOGAN “It’s over.” When those words came out of her mouth, I wasn’t surprised. What I didn’t expect was how damn near impossible it’s been to move on. The first time I saw Paige Waters, the new associate at my firm who was as intelligent and self-confident as she was stunning, I wanted her. I wasn’t used to women rejecting me, but she did—or tried to, anyway—which made me even more determined to have her. I had no idea that when I finally got her, I wouldn’t want to let her go. But I screwed up. She doesn’t even know how badly I screwed up, and everything still went to hell. Now, one year after our split and with so much still unresolved between us, we’re suddenly going head to head on the same case. Seeing her at the office again, where it all started, I realize that this is far from over. She’s still mine. And whether it’s in the courtroom or the bedroom, I always win.

Book Short Summary:

Scientific progress has taken human beings to remote planes in far galaxies and enabled them to build comfortable homes there. But when that science proved a deadly enemy and had to be abandoned, the pioneers were isolated in alien surroundings. There was no way home. Earth, which had once been home, had ceased to exist. And when the men of the planet Demeter died out in space, the destiny of the human race was left to a group of women. Clare Monkton worked to establish a feminist world. She used the resources of science to assure the continuance of the race ... but the resulting children were to be brought up according to her ideas. There was bound to be a challenge. When there were once more young men growing up on the planet, it was inevitable that they should oppose the authority of the women. And when one of those young men proved to come from such a dangerous ancestry, Clare knew she had a battle on her hands...

Book Short Summary:

It is March 2020. I am working at a sales agent in the roof industry and I have decent income. It’s risky because I have to climb old buildings roofs but I like it. Suddenly due to COVID-19 my county dictates a state an emergency and I have no other choice but to stay with my kids at home. My wife is working in the medical system so it’s her duty to help by going to work. Because she had a greater risk to be infected by the new virus I had to stay alone with my kids to protect my older parents that were helping me before, prior the COVID era… I love my kids, a boy, age five and a girl age two so I’ve made everything possible to take care of them while keeping them entertained. I’ve cooked, sang, played with them in every possible way and from time to time we’ve watched an animation movie. One of those movies watched together was Frozen 2. After we’ve watched the movie, with the kids enjoying it some ideas engulfed my mind. I wrote my ideas into a word document called Frozen 3 script. John Steinbeck said "Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen." My rabbits multiplied therefore after one month of writing and watching over my kids the script was ready… It wasn’t perfect as it had many spelling and expression problems as I am not a native English writer but the ideas inside and the actual story were in my opinion at least great… You see I wrote before, self-published a book on Amazon and I have an YouTube Channel where I wrote stories and amazingly 33k subscribers enjoyed the way I write despite in English the imperfect style. I know when a story has a lot of potential that’s why I’ve decided to share the story to Disney, the legal owners of Frozen. God knows I’ve tried every possible way to contact them but I’ve always received the same answer “It’s our policy not to accept any unsolicited creative ideas and submissions” and other similar replies. After one and a half month of trying and failing to contact anyone from Disney I am tired so I’ve decided to publish the script because I love it and I don’t want to die buried deep inside my computer’s bits. I don’t have time to correct it thoroughly or adapt it from a script to a literal form because the state of emergency ended fourteen days ago and I’ve returned to my job. I have to work to sustain my family. I want to share this story/script to everyone interested to read it… I want objective and honest answers about the actual story. I won’t mind if you criticize me for not using the best expression to describe the story or because of my misspelling yet the scope of this writing is to deliver an amazing story. I wanted to imprint a Disney Frozen style logical, not violent, funny, interesting, dramatic and musical while maintaining everything we loved in Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven including their personalities in a logical no nonsense story. I also wanted to deliver a reason for Elsa’s powers, why was she born with the ability to create ice. You will tell me if I’ve succeeded or not !

Book Short Summary:

In this masterly twentieth-century history, Paul Ginsborg places the family at center stage, a novel perspective from which to examine key moments of revolution and dictatorship. His groundbreaking book spans 1900 to 1950 and encompasses five nation states in the throes of dramatic transition: Russia in revolutionary passage from Empire to Soviet Union; Turkey in transition from Ottoman Empire to modern Republic; Italy, from liberalism to fascism; Spain during the Second Republic and Civil War; and Germany from the failure of the Weimar Republic to the National Socialist state. Ginsborg explores the effects of political upheaval and radical social policies on family life and, in turn, the impact of families on revolutionary change itself. Families, he shows, do not simply experience the effects of political power, but are themselves actors in the historical process. The author brings human and personal elements to the fore with biographical details and individual family histories, along with a fascinating selection of family photographs and portraits. From WWI—an indelible backdrop and imprinting force on the first half of the twentieth century—to post-war dictatorial power and family engineering initiatives, to the conclusion of WWII, this book shines new light on the profound relations among revolution, dictatorship, and family.

Book Short Summary:

Iona and Peter Opie were twentieth-century pioneers. Their research and writing focused on the folklore of British children – their games, rhymes, riddles, secret languages and every variety of the traditions and inventions of the children’s collective physical and verbal play. Such closely observed, respectful, good-humoured and historically attuned writing about the traditions of childhood was a revelation to English-language readers around the world. Their numerous books were a rare phenomenon: they attracted a popular readership far beyond the professional and academic communities. For those who work with children, their collaborative research was a powerful influence in confirming the immense capacities of the young for cooperation, conservation, invention and imagination. Their books challenged – then and now – the bleak and limited view of children which focuses on their smallness, ignorance and powerlessness. The writers in this volume pay their tribute to the Opies by exploring a wonderfully varied topography of children's play, from different countries and different perspectives. Their research is vivid and challenging; that is, as it should be, in the tradition of the Opies. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Play.

Book Short Summary:

Earlier titles in this series have directed attention to selected questions of current theoretical or practical interest in developmental biology, without special emphasis upon individual biological systems. Tho choose giant polytene chromosomes as the common denominator of a new volume may at first sight seem to set rather arbitrary restrictions upon a coherent discussion of the basic problem of cellular differentiation. However, the reader will find out for hirnself that, on the contrary, such a limitation, though dicta ted by the material, focuses the analysis upon one essential point: the differential release of genetic information from operational subunits of the eukaryotic chromosome. In the organization of this volume we have not striven for completeness - some, indeed, may fee 1 that the work on Sciarids is underrepresented - but the various contributors have made every effort to render a thorough and up-to-date picture of the situation in their particular field, and on this basis to discuss all possible angles of general biological interest. Authors and editors have agreed to dedicate this volume to the memory of JACK SCHULTZ.
