Book Excerpt :

Three little known facts: Africa is now the world's fastest growing continent, with average GDP growth of 5.5% the past 10 years. Malaria deaths have declined by 30% and HIV infections by 74%. Nigeria produces more movies than America does. The Lion Awakes is the true story of today's Africa, one often overshadowed by the dire headlines. Traveling from his ancestral home in Uganda, East Africa, to the booming economy and (if chaotic) new democracies of West Africa, and down to the "Silicon Savannahs" of Kenya and Rwanda, Ashish J. Thakkar shows us an Africa that few Westerners are aware exists. Far from being a place in need of our pity and aid, we see a continent undergoing a remarkable transformation and economic development. We meet a new generation of ambitious, tech savvy young Africans who are developing everything from bamboo bicycles to iPhone Apps; we meet artists, film makers and architects thriving with newfound freedom and opportunity, and we are introduced to hyper-educated members of the Diaspora who have returned to Africa after years abroad to open companies and take up positions in government. They all tell the same story: 21st Century Africa offers them more opportunity than the First World. Drawing from his business experience, and his own family's history in Africa, which include his parents' expulsion from Uganda by Idi Amin in the 70s and his own survival of the Rwandan genocide in 1994, Ashish shows us how much difference a decade can make.

Book Short Summary:

Introducing the key concepts and thinkers within the Marxist tradition, Marxism Goes to the Movies demonstrates their relevance to film theory and practice past and present. Author Mike Wayne argues that Marxist filmmaking has engaged with and transformed this popular medium, developing its potential for stimulating revolutionary consciousness. As the crisis of capitalism deepens, this history and these resources are vital for a better future. Marxism is one of the few approaches that can bring together political, economic, formal and cultural analysis into a unified approach of studying film, and how films in turn can help us understand and even critically interrogate these forces. The book examines how filmmakers, who have been influenced by Marxism, have made some of the most significant contributions to film culture globally, and provides historical perspective on the development of Marxism and film. Each chapter covers a broad theme that is broken down into sections that are cross-referenced throughout, providing helpful navigation of the material. Clear and concise in its arguments, this is an ideal introduction for students of Marxism and film, inviting readers to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Book Short Summary:

Made in Africa presents the findings of original field research into the design, practice, and varied outcomes of industrial policy in the cement, leather and leather products, and floriculture sectors in Ethiopia. It explores how and why the outcomes of industrial policy are shaped by particular factors in these industries. It also examines industrial structures and associated global value chains to demonstrate the challenges faced by African firms in international markets. The findings are discussed against the backdrop of 'industrial policy', which has recently found renewed favour among economists and international organizations, and of the history of thought about and practice in industrialization. The book seeks to learn from the failures and successes in the three sectors, all of them functioning under the umbrella of a single industrial strategy. It argues that an effective industrial policy requires a more interventionist state than most development economists would accept, including those recently claiming to champion a 'new industrial policy'. Moreover, it argues that success lies in the interactions among policy, specific industrial structures, and institutions. Specifically, a successful policy, he posits should maximize linkage effects, but will founder in the absence of a clear understanding of the political economy of each sector.

Book Short Summary:

As the widely-admired CEO of Tyco International, Dennis Kozlowski grew a little-known New Hampshire conglomerate into a global giant. In a stunning series of events, Kozlowski suddenly lost his job along with his favored public status when he was indicted by legendary Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau—it was an inglorious end to an otherwise brilliant career. Kozlowski was the face of corporate excess in the turbulent post-Enron environment; he was pictured under headlines that read "Oink Oink," and publicly castigated for his extravagant lifestyle. "Deal-a-Day Dennis" was transformed into the "poster child for corporate greed." Kozlowski was ultimately convicted of grand larceny and other crimes that, in sum, found the former CEO guilty of wrongfully taking $100 million from Tyco. Taking Down the Lion shines a bright light on former CEO Dennis Kozlowski and the Tyco corporate scandal—it is the definitive telling of a largely misunderstood episode in U.S. business history. In an unfiltered view of corporate America, Catherine Neal pulls back the curtain to reveal a world of big business, ambition, money, and an epidemic of questionable ethics that infected not only business dealings but extended to attorneys, journalists, politicians, and the criminal justice system. When the ugly truth is told, it's clear the "good guys" were not all good and the "bad guys" not all bad. And there were absolutely no heroes.

Book Short Summary:

Written by Soviet politics and international relations specialist Igho Natufe, Soviet Policy in Africa offers a critical analysis of Soviet and Western foreign policies that presents a balanced perspective on the understanding and evolution of Soviet ideology and politics. Using on extensive research, Natufe traces the evolution of Soviet foreign policy from 1917 through 1980, focusing on the ideological constructs of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet state, through the contending interpretations of Joseph Stalin, and finally to Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev. He reveals how the Soviets continually used the tenets of Marxism-Leninism for global issues, even though their interpretations sometimes varied between individual leaders. Natufe also shows how the Soviet government viewed post-1945 Europe as favorable to revolutionary tendencies, particularly in the colonies. Africa became a battleground between Eastern and Western ideologies, and Soviet policies posed opportunities and threats to the continents independence movements. In addition, Natufe discusses China and the West, as well as presenting case studies of Soviet foreign policy. Scholars and students of international politics will find Soviet Policy in Africa a well-researched, thorough study of this often-overlooked subject.

Animality and Colonial Subjecthood in Africa

  • Total of Pages : 340

  • Pdf File: animality-and-colonial-subjecthood-in-africa.pdf

Book Short Summary:

With this multispecies study of animals as instrumentalities of the colonial state in Nigeria, Saheed Aderinto argues that animals, like humans, were colonial subjects in Africa. Animality and Colonial Subjecthood in Africa broadens the historiography of animal studies by putting a diverse array of species (dogs, horses, livestock, and wildlife) into a single analytical framework for understanding colonialism in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. From his study of animals with unequal political, economic, social, and intellectual capabilities, Aderinto establishes that the core dichotomies of human colonial subjecthood—indispensable yet disposable, good and bad, violent but peaceful, saintly and lawless—were also embedded in the identities of Nigeria’s animal inhabitants. If class, religion, ethnicity, location, and attitude toward imperialism determined the pattern of relations between human Nigerians and the colonial government, then species, habitat, material value, threat, and biological and psychological characteristics (among other traits) shaped imperial perspectives on animal Nigerians. Conceptually sophisticated and intellectually engaging, Aderinto’s thesis challenges readers to rethink what constitutes history and to recognize that human agency and narrative are not the only makers of the past.

A National Book Award nominee! Returning to the same era of his "In a Dark Wood", Cadnum's majestic novel--part mystery, part history--chronicles the pageantry and brutality of the Crusades under King Richard. Edmund, a young apprentice, is awaiting punishment as a counterfeiter when a knight intervenes on his behalf--and compels Edmund to join Richard Lionheart's forces in the Holy Land. There, amidst the savagery of the twelfth-century Crusades, Edmund learns both courage and compassion, and discovers that cruelty is sometimes considered the will of Heaven. Set in medieval England and the war-torn shores of the Middle East, Cadnum's tale weaves together a rich tapestry of storms at sea, the brutality of hand-to-hand combat, and one of the classic horse and lance battles in recorded history--the Battle of Arsuf.

Book Short Summary:

First things first, I honor my GOD for the inspiration and impartation to write this book. It is through my own personal experiences and struggles with excess weight as well as other personal battles, along with the observation of my family, relatives, friends and many others ; that I’ve decided to expose a frequently seen but little known and seldom understood emotional and psychological disease that I’ve titled ; (BIG DADDYISM)! In keeping it simple and keeping it real, this book was written to help you present the best you possible. With a changing economy, our national and personal debt rising to historic highs along with healthcare cost going up faster than you can swallow your next pill down, to quote a popular phrase; something’s got to give! Many individuals have taken charge of securing their financial future into their own hands; while this is good, one must remember a quote from my book (101 1?2 Pivotal Proverbs Vol.3) Those who neglect to take care of their health may not live long enough to enjoy their wealth; so my slogan is before you pop a pill you should (T.A.P. into this book), meaning; turn a page and read on toward your good health.

Book Short Summary:

Undoubtedly growing up during the Vietnam War, water gate and gas shortages can have a profound effect on a child. Also being the son of immigrant parents most certainly can lead to a traumatizing clash of cultures and the understanding of right and wrong. With that being said the Remington Company gave me the honor of a lifetime by letting me express my thoughts in unison with telling the brilliant stories of professionals around the world. As I wrote endlessly 24 hours a day I realized that our world is full of hope and real promise. I realized that it wasnt about war, ideology and the pursuit of global domination. I realized that in the pages of this great book great things were about to happen if only these stories can be made public. I realized that I had the opportunity of a lifetime by expressing the Humanitarian attributes that these professionals continually made. After many years of writing I realized that the Remington Company had a distinct and noble purpose and perhaps we could not change the present but we could certainly try to change our future. With that we created our Mentorship Program which gets these prolific stories out to the children. We wrote the stories with zest but never crossed the line of respect or dignity. We wished to capture the hearts of our audience and prove to them that giving was not an option but more so our duty as life forms on our planet. Today our book has a theme Inspiring the youth of America. This theme was our way of telling the world Lets hold hands and prepare our children for a better life. today I continue to write for the Registry. My life has irrevocably changed for the better. I volunteer for any thing all the time. I enjoy moments of quiet and the appreciation of our environment. I read these biographies in amazement as everyone else does and it never seems to get uneventful. Either way I sincerely hope you enjoy these biographies and use them to strengthen your spirit and confidence about our existence as a species on this planet. I patiently wait for divine intervention in order to write my next biography and am happy to serve the brilliant members of the Remington Registry of Outstanding Professionals.

Book Short Summary:

A TIME Best Book of the Year and a New York Times Book Review, NYLON and ESSENCE Best Book of Fall “Rachel Long has miraculous command of the line, in all its trickery and grace and gasps, showcasing a truly refreshing voice with observant, deeply felt insight.” —Morgan Parker, author of Magical Negro Finalist for the Rathbones Folio Prize, the Costa Poetry Award, and the Forward Prize for Best First Collection Each poem in Rachel Long’s award-winning My Darling from the Lions has a vivid story to tell—of family quirks, the perils of dating, the grip of religion, or sexual awakening—stories that are, by turn, emotionally insightful, politically conscious, wise, funny, and outrageous. Told in three sections, it’s a book about growing up, falling in love with not-great men, and girlhood; a collection that speaks to femininity, divinity, familial shame, Black identity, and modern culture. Long reveals herself as a razor-sharp and original voice on the issues of sexual politics and cultural inheritance that polarize our current moment. With a fresh commitment to the power of the individual poem, her collection offers immediate, wide-awake poetry that entertains royally, without sacrificing a note of its urgency or remarkable skill. My Darling from the Lions marks the arrival of a thrilling new voice and presence in poetry.

Book Short Summary:

Jez Stewart charts the course of this extraordinarily fertile area of British film from early experiments with stop-motion and the flourishing of animated drawings during WWI. He reveals how the rockier interwar period set the shape of the industry in enduring ways, and how creatives like Len Lye and Lotte Reiniger brought art to advertising and sponsored films, building a foundation for such distinctive talents as Bob Godfrey, Alison De Vere and George Dunning to unleash their independent visions in the age of commercial TV. Stewart highlights the integral role of women in the industry, the crucial boost delivered by the arrival of Channel 4, the emergence of online animation and much more. The book features 'close-up' analyses of key animators such as Lancelot Speed and Richard Williams, as well as more thematic takes on art, politics and music. It builds a framework for better appreciating Britain's landmark contributions to the art of animation, including Halas and Batchelor's Animal Farm (1954), Dunning's Yellow Submarine (1968) and the creations of Aardman Animations.

Book Short Summary:

The first French invasion of Portugal in 1807 - which was commanded by Junot, one of Napoleon's most experienced generals - was a key event in the long, brutal Peninsular War. It was the first campaign fought in the Peninsular by Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, yet it tends to be overshadowed by more famous episodes in the six-year conflict that followed.David Buttery, in this original and perceptive new study, sets the record straight - his tightly focused narrative covers the entire campaign in vivid detail.

Book Short Summary:

At the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, a global audience of nearly one billion viewers were treated to the unprecedented sight of James Bond meeting Queen Elizabeth II. Shortly after, the 'Queen' hurled herself out of a helicopter, her Union Jack parachute guiding her down to the Olympic Stadium. What it is about moments such as these that define both a particular idea of Britishness and a particular type of British film comedy? How has British cinema exploited parody as a means of negotiating its sense of identity? How does this function within a globalized marketplace and in the face of dominant Hollywood cinema? Beyond a Joke explores the myriad ways British film culture has used forms of parody, from the 1960s to the present day. It provides a contextual and textual analysis of a range of works that, while popular, have only rarely been the subject of serious academic attention – from Morecambe and Wise to Shaun of the Dead to the London 2012 Olympics' opening ceremony. Combining the methodologies both of film history and film theory, Beyond a Joke locates parody within specific industrial and cultural moments, while also looking in detail at the aesthetics of parody as a mode. Ultimately, such works are shown to be a form of culturally specific film or televisual product for exporting to the global market, in which 'Britishness', shaped in self-mocking and ironic terms, becomes the selling point. Written in an accessible style and illustrated throughout with a diverse range of examples, Beyond a Joke is the first book to explore parody within a specifically British context and makes an invaluable contribution to the scholarship on both British and global film culture.

Book Short Summary:

SALT LICK, Vol. II, The Innocents, by Dr. Robert A. (Sunny) Brock, the conclusion of Ali ORileys celebration of life is glutted with maturing parent-child, emotional relationships, and sibling bonding. The same variety of personalities are present which filled the pages of Volume One, however, they are in the responsible summer of life. The comedy, romance and pathos of life reach new plateaus as the families blunder through the early child-rearing years with purpose and hope. As a clan-unit they share their joys and surprises, exploring male-female differences in perspective, finding new levels of patience with each others shortcomings. Again, the Christian message of redemption is folded into real life situations amidst friction and agitation. All the relationships jell, teaching tolerance and patience among the diverse antagonistic personalities. THOMAS and ALI set up housekeeping near a valley lake. The other clan-couples soon follow, building homes around the lake, creating a protective, pastoral paradise and establishing their own town of Cousins, Georgia, between Savannah and Macon. Thomas and Alis cabin is nestled beside the main wagon trail. A mysterious traveler and his two children, running from the east-coast Scarlet fever epidemic, are stranded. The stranger departs in the night, leaving his ill children in Thomas and Alis care. Before the young girl dies, Ali catches her contagious disease. Ali looses her strength and glory due to the ravages of Scarlet fever. The small abandoned boy is given to ELIJAH to rear. One of the many animal episodes occur in the cabin, teaching priority management. During early morning hours, a squabbling wood duck and squirrel fall into the fireplace. The comic bedlam of the chase brings about an accidental fire. This incident sets the stage for empathetic-comedy, and romantic interlude of emotional joy and stress release, which the reader will vicariously share and fall in love with the couple. Alis first born son, SUNNY (Big Foot), enters the story and steals the show to the end of the book. Sunnys two year old, baby-talk is contrasted by his uninformed thought life, which adds classical, innocent joy from his birth to the conclusion. Sunny is born with a club foot. Uncle Elijah builds a twisting box for therapeutic straightening of the foot. The entire clan shares Alis agony, watching helpless as her baby suffers. Elijahs wife is barren from too much cattle driving and horse riding as a child, therefore, he brings several orphans into the clan. Having been raised in a household of twenty-one children, he cannot function well without sibling rivalry and bonding. On a trip to Savannah, promoting his Elijah treasure chest-coffins he obtains custody of a criminal's children, thus enters GEORGE, into the clan family-fabric. George becomes one of Sunnys protector-benefactors. Elijahs wife, HOWDY, develops a jealous battle between herself and sister-in-law. The family squabble results in ROWDY becoming a paraplegiate. Rowdys invalid state affords opportunity to teach forgiveness, patience and tenacity. Thomas takes Ali and Sunny shopping in Savannah. The gala mood ends in tragedy when Sunny gets lost from Daddy at the Savannah Zoo. The helpless anxiety of losing a child pervades the episode. Unknown to the parents, a vagrant child tries caring for Sunny, resulting in much pathetic comedy. The new caretaker, GOOBER, also loses Sunny on one of their many rollicking jaunts. However, Goober in his persistence, rescues Sunny, and after many near death situations, returns him to his mother, who thinks a guardian angel has returned her baby. Then, Ali loses and rescues Sunny. Before leaving Savannah, the orphan, Goober, is convince
