Book Short Summary:

Suzanne McMinn, a former romance writer and founder of the popular blog chickensintheroad.com, shares the story of her search to lead a life of ordinary splendor in Chickens in the Road, her inspiring and funny memoir. Craving a life that would connect her to the earth and her family roots, McMinn packed up her three kids, left her husband and her sterile suburban existence behind, and moved to rural West Virginia. Amid the rough landscape and beauty of this rural mountain country, she pursues a natural lifestyle filled with chickens, goats, sheep—and no pizza delivery. With her new life comes an unexpected new love—"52," a man as beguiling and enigmatic as his nickname—a turbulent romance that reminds her that peace and fulfillment can be found in the wake of heartbreak. Coping with formidable challenges, including raising a trio of teenagers, milking stubborn cows, being snowed in with no heat, and making her own butter, McMinn realizes that she’s living a forty-something’s coming-of-age story. As she dares to become self-reliant and embrace her independence, she reminds us that life is a bold adventure—if we’re willing to live it. Chickens in the Road includes more than 20 recipes, craft projects, and McMinn’s photography, and features a special two-color design.

Book Short Summary:

Using a simple five-minute base recipe, you can make the “brilliant” (Andrew Zimmern), “astonishingly good” (Ruth Reichl) flavors of the innovative “ice cream gods” (Bon Appétit) Salt & Straw at home. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE SEASON BY Eater • Delish • Epicurious Based out of Portland, Oregon, Salt & Straw is the brainchild of two cousins, Tyler and Kim Malek, who had a vision but no recipes. They turned to their friends for advice—chefs, chocolatiers, brewers, and food experts of all kinds—and what came out is a super-simple base that takes five minutes to make, and an ice cream company that sees new flavors and inspiration everywhere they look. Using that base recipe, you can make dozens of Salt & Straw’s most beloved, unique (and a little controversial) flavors, including Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Roasted Strawberry and Toasted White Chocolate, and Buttered Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. But more importantly, this book reveals what they’ve learned, how to tap your own creativity, and how to invent flavors of your own, based on whatever you see around you. Because ice cream isn’t just a thing you eat, it’s a way to live. Praise for Salt & Straw Ice Cream Cookbook “Making ice cream at home is already enough of a mental hurdle. . . . Salt & Straw is out to prove us wrong with a new cookbook . . . making crazy ice cream flavors is more than doable—it’s addictive.”—Portland Monthly “The approachable, you-can-do-this nature of the book should be all that home cooks need to try it out.”—Eater “I originally sought out this book solely because of the Meyer Lemon Blueberry Buttermilk Custard. . . . It is the greatest ice cream flavor that’s ever existed and, because it’s only a seasonal flavor in their stores, I needed the recipe so I could make it whenever I wanted.”—Bon Appétit “A cookbook dedicated to ice cream? Yes, please. This is essential reading for Salt & Straw fans.”—Food & Wine “Few of America’s many ice cream makers are as seasonally minded and downright creative as Salt & Straw co-founder Tyler Malek.”—GrubStreet

For Amy Ettinger, ice cream is not just a delicious snack but a circumstance and a time of year—frozen forever in memory. From a visit to the one place in the United States that makes real frozen custard in a mammoth machine known as the Iron Lung, to the vicious competition among small ice-cream makers and the turf wars among ice-cream trucks, to extreme flavors like foie gras and oyster, Ettinger encounters larger-than-life characters and uncovers what’s really behind America’s favorite frozen treats. Sweet Spot is a fun and spirited exploration of a treat Americans can’t get enough of—one that transports us back to our childhoods and will have you walking to the nearest shop for a cone.

Book Short Summary:

From the bestselling author of Dragons Love Tacos comes a whimsical re-telling of the chupacabra folktale, written in a blend of English and Spanish A long time ago, a girl named Carla lived on a goat farm with her father, Hector. One night, a goat disappeared from the farm and turned up flat as a pancake. Only one creature could do that--El Chupacabras, the goatsucker! Legend has it that El Chupacabras is a fearsome beast, but you can't believe everything you hear...and sometimes the truth is even more interesting. Told in equal parts English and Spanish by bestselling author Adam Rubin, and cinematically illustrated by acclaimed Hollywood creature creator Crash McCreery, this lighthearted take on a modern legend is not told in the traditional bilingual style. Each sentence is half-Spanish/half-English followed by a repetition of the same line translated the other way around. This mirroring technique allows the languages to intermingle equally. A fun and unique way to introduce either Spanish or English to new readers. A note from author Adam Rubin: "I decided to tell this story in an unusual way to explore the beauty of harmony. It's easy to dismiss the unfamiliar, but compassion takes a little more effort. With so many people trumpeting divisiveness right now, it's more important than ever to teach kids that there is more than one way to understand the world."

Book Short Summary:

Have you ever wanted to make rich, creamy ice cream right from your own home? Well now you can with these amazing ice cream recipes! Making ice cream at home is so much more satisfying than buying the boring stuff at the store and the results are far tastier. This book will outline the basic methods of making ice creams and show you how to make some cool new flavors that you would never find on a grocery shelf (Chai tea? Real Mint? Blood Orange Pops? These would never be in a store!). After using these recipes a few times, you will be an ice cream and frozen dessert pro! After reading some of the labels on prepackaged ice cream, I realized, (not surprisingly), that store bought ice creams can be full of preservatives and artificial flavors. Why does a frozen dessert need preservatives?! There has to be a better way! I decided to write this book to share great ice cream recipes that everyone can make at home without any unnecessary additives. Making your own ice cream at home will also shock your taste buds- ice cream made with real mint leaves is SO much more delicious and refreshing. All of the recipes in this book are made without artificial flavors and you and your guests will be able to taste the difference- get ready for people to ask for seconds and even thirds! Many of the recipes in this book will require an ice cream maker which can easily be found and purchased online or in any cooking store. They range from inexpensive to very pricey so pick the one that is best for you. I personally use one with a bowl which gets frozen ahead of time in the freezer and is then taken out right when I am ready to churn my ice cream. Look over the directions about how to use your machine before starting your ice cream. If you don't have an ice cream machine, don't worry. This book still has many great frozen desserts for you- try the Frozen Yogurt Berry Pops, a healthy frozen snack that is sure to please! Because all of the recipes in this book need to be frozen, the 'Active Time', or time it will take you to actively be working on these recipes, is what is included at the top of each page. Each dessert will need time to freeze so keep that in mind. But that's enough about the minute detail. Get your heavy cream and sugar out and let's make some ice cream!

Book Short Summary:

Ice cream as we recognize it today has been in existence for at least 300 years, though its origins probably go much further back in time. Before the development of refrigeration, ice cream was a luxury reserved for special occasions but its advance to commercial manufacture was helped by the first ice cream making machine patented by Nancy Johnson in Philadelphia in the 1840s. The second edition of The Science of Ice Cream has been fully revised and updated with new material. The book still begins with the history of ice cream, subsequent chapters looking at the link between the microscopic and macroscopic properties and how these relate to the ultimate texture of the product you eat. Information on nutritional aspects and developments in new products and processes for making ice cream have been added and the books is completed with some suggestions for experiments relating to ice cream and how to make it at home or in a school laboratory. The book has authenticity and immediacy, being written by an active industrial practitioner, and is ideal for undergraduate food science students as well as those working in the food industry. It is also accessible to the general reader who has studied science to A-level and provides teachers with ideas for using ice cream to illustrate scientific principles.
