Book Excerpt :

The Big Book of Fairy Tales holds true to the rule, that sometimes – the oldest fairy tales are the best! Here is a collection of some of the finest stories from around the globe, including classics from Arabian Nights such as ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Sinbad the Sailor’, Hans Christian Andersen’s best work with ‘The Ugly Ducking’, ‘Little Tin Soldier’ and ‘The Little Match girl’ as well as the archetypal tales from Charles Perrault including ‘Blue Beard’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Puss in Boots.’ Other tales with less well known literary lineages, such as ‘Dick Whittington’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ are also encompassed for the reader’s enjoyment. These stories in this Big Book of Fairy Tales are accompanied by a set of dazzling illustrations from a true master of the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’ – Charles Robinson (1870-1937). An active painter in his own right, and brother of the famous Thomas and William Heath Robinson, his illustrations still delight both young and old over a century later. Robinson started his illustrative career with 100 pen and ink drawings for A Child’s Garden of Verses (1895). The book was an instant hit, and from that point onwards, Robinson continued to illustrate fairy tales and children’s books – with his characteristic style of subtle line, combined with delicate watercolours. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Book Short Summary:

The original vision of Grimms' tales in English for the first time When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold—heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique—they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

The Brothers Grimm are perhaps the best known folklorists of all time. This collection, ‘The Fairy Tales of Grimm’ brings together some of their best known and loved tales, such as: ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘The Valiant Little Tailor’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘Snow White’, ‘The Frog Prince’ and ‘The Golden Goose’. The Brothers Grimm (or Die Brüder Grimm), Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. These timeless stories are accompanied by the dazzling colour and black and white illustrations of Anne Anderson (1874 – 1930). Anderson was a prolific Scottish illustrator, primarily known for her art nouveaux children’s book illustrations. She also painted, etched and designed many greetings cards, with her illustrations appearing near the end of the Edwardian era. Presented alongside the text, her illustrations further refine and elucidate the Brothers Grimm’s masterful storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Book Short Summary:

This was meant to be the third and last of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books of many colours. Fortunately for us it wasn't. First there was the Blue Fairy Book; then when Victorian children asked for more, the Red Fairy Book; and, when they wanted more still, the Green Fairy Book was put together. The stories in all the books are borrowed from many countries; France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Scotland, England and even one rare Chinese tale. However much these nations differ over policy and ideology, all their children agree to liking fairy tales. As we grow up, we dismiss or forget the fairy tales of our youth and the lessons they taught. But grandparents have long memories and the responsibility falls on them to tell them to their grandchildren: and when they, in their turn, become grandparents, they remember them, and tell them also. In this way these tales are older than reading and writing, far older than printing. The oldest fairy tales ever written down were written down in Egypt, in about Joseph's time, nearly three thousand six hundred years ago. Other fairy stories Homer knew, in Greece, nearly three thousand years ago, and he made them all up into a poem, the Odyssey, which all children should read some day. But here you will find an enchanted watch, the golden blackbird, Jorinde and Joringel, the shoes of swiftness, that were worn later by Jack the Giant-Killer and perennial favourites like the three little pigs. These fairy tales are the oldest stories in the world. They were first made by men, who were childlike, for their own amusement, and so they amuse children still. While these stories were made to amuse, they also teach goodness, unselfishness, courage and morals. 33% of the publisher's profit will be donated to charity.

Book Short Summary:

There was a time when the president of the Folk Lore Society believed it was not acceptable for the editors of the day, Mr Andrew Lang and Mr. Joseph Jacobs, to publish fairy books. Their reply was that they did not see any harm in it, and they were ready to "put themselves on their country, and be tried by a jury of children." As to whether there are really any fairies or not, that is a difficult question. The Editor never saw any himself, but he knew several people who have seen them-in the Highlands-and heard their music. If ever you are in Nether Lochaber, go to the Fairy Hill, and you may hear the music your- self, as grown-up people have done, but you must go on a fine day. Again, if there are really no fairies, why do people believe in them, all over the world? The ancient Greeks, the old Egyptians, the Hindus, and even the Red Indians, and is it likely, if there are no fairies, that so many different peoples would have seen and heard them? This volume contains Russian, German, French, Icelandic, Red Indian, and other stories. The Editor cannot say 'good-bye' without advising children, as they pursue their studies, to read The Rose and the Ring, by the late Mr. Thackeray. He believes this book is quite indispensable in every child's library, and parents should be urged to purchase it at the first opportunity, as without it no education is complete, not to mention the benefit an ill child at the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital will derive from it, both literally and financially. This book has been especially re-published to raise funds for The Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity. By buying this book you will be donating to this great charity that does so much good for ill children and which also enables families to stay together in times of crisis. And what better way to help children than to buy a book of fairy tales. Some have not been seen in print or heard for over a century. 33% of the Publisher's profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the GOSH Children's Charity. Book Short Summary:

The existence of the Russian Skazki or Märchen (Stories, Folklore or Fairy Tales) was first made generally known to the British Public in about 1880 by William Ralston in his Russian Folk Tales. A year after the appearance of Ralston's book, the eminent Russian historian and archæologist, Peter Nikolaevich Polevoi selected, from the inexhaustible stores of Afanasiev, some three dozen of the Skazki (stories) most suitable for children, and worked them up into a fairy tale book which was published at St. Petersburg in 1874, under the title of Narodnuiya Russkiya Skazki (Popular Russian Stories). To manipulate these quaintly vigorous old world stories for nursery purposes was, no easy task, but, on the whole, M. Polevoi did his work excellently well, softening the crudities and smoothing out the occasional roughness, turning these charming stories into entirely readable stories for children. It is from the first Russian edition of M. Polevoi's book that the following selection of 24 Russian stories has been made. With the single exception of "Morozko," a variant of which may be familiar to those who know Mr. Ralston's volume. Some of the stories in this volume are: The Golden Mountain Morozko The Flying Ship The Story of the Tsarevich Ivan, and of The Harp that Harped Without A Harper The Story of Gore-Gorinskoe Go I Know Not Whither—Fetch I Know Not What Kuz’ma Skorobogaty The Tsarevna Loveliness-Inexhaustible Verlioka; and many more. As to the merits of these Skazki, they must be left to speak for themselves. So, we invite you to down this book of 24 unique Russian Fairy Tales and curl up in a comfy chair with a mug for of steaming hot chocolate and be whisked away to a country that is still as mysterious as it is large. 10% of the profit from the sale of this eBook will be donated to charities. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Russian, Russia, Skazki, Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, folk tales, story, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, culture, cultural, golden mountain, morozko, flying ship, muzhichek, big as your thumb, moustaches, seven versts, long, tsarevich ivan, harp gore gorinskoe, go, fetch, kuz’ma, Kuzma, skorobogaty, tsarevna, loveliness, inexhaustible, verlioka, frog, tsarevna, two sons, ivan, soldier, woman, accuser, Thomas, berennikov, white duck, little fool, little feather, fenist, bright falcon, peasant, demyan, enchanted, ring, brave, labourer, sage, damsel, prophetic, dream, two out, knapsack, marko the rich, vasily the luckless, R, Nisbet Bain, C. None of your old friends will be there -neither Jack the Giant Killer, nor Little Red Riding Hood, nor Cinderella or any of the others. Instead, together with Ivan the Peasant’s Son you will cross swords with Chudo-Yudo, the fire-breathing monster; follow Pokati-Goroshek the Rolling Pea into the underground kingdom and return from there on the back of an eagle; marvel at the cleverness of Zarniyar who outwitted the sly and cruel Shah; be filled with admiration at Boroldoi-Mergen, the brave hunter of the Altai Mountains who risked the life of his own son in order to save his people; delight in the resourcefulness of a simple weaver who surpassed in wisdom the wisest councillors of the tsar. A Mountain of Gems – Fairy-Tales of the Peoples of the Soviet Land – Illustrated by Vladimir Minayev is a collection of many fairy tales rendered into English from Russia, The Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Chukchi.
