Book Short Summary:

The Enchanted Castle is a children’s fantasy tale by Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, Five Children and It plus many Others. The Enchanted Castle a country estate in the West Country of England (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset) seen through the eyes of three children, Jerry, Jimmy, and Kathy, who discover it while exploring during their school holidays in the early 1900’s. The lake, groves and marble statues, with white towers and turrets in the distance, make a fairy-tale setting, and then in the middle of the maze in the rose garden, they find a sleeping fairy-tale princess. The "princess" tells them that the castle is full of magic, and they almost believe her. She shows them the treasures of the castle, including a magic ring she says is a ring of invisibility, but when it actually turns her invisible she panics and admits that she is the housekeeper's niece, Mabel, and she was just play-acting. The children soon find that the ring has other magical powers (as all magical rings do) such as making the "Ugly-Wugglies" (Guy Fawkes style dummies they had made to swell the audience at one of their play-performances) come to life. They eventually discover that the ring is actually granting their own wishes, and that the disturbing results stem from their failure to specify those wishes precisely. The Enchanted Castle was written for both children and adults. It combines descriptions of the imaginative play of children, with a magic more muted than in her major fantasies. =============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: enchanted castle, west country, children’s fantasy, tale, folklore, myths, legends, Jerry, Jimmy, Kathy, school holidays, lake, groves, marble statues, white, gleaming, towers, turrets, explore, fairy-tale setting, maze, fairy tale princess, sleeping, asleep, castle, palace, magic, magic ring, invisibility, housekeeper, niece, mabel, play-acting, magical powers, ugly wuggly, ugly-wuggly, ugly wugglies, guy fawkes, contemporary fantasy, fiction, imagination, railway children, five children and it, Castle hall, magnificent, deceiver, head first, entrance, enchanted garden, red clue, across the grass, straight, breathless, result, game, question, candle, silver frame, mirror, shadow, bread and butter, missy, policemen, go home, stone beast, silver, sea chest, landing stage, stagger, water butt, eliza, dishevelled, breathless, french peck, lovely, blue-black hair, limp hand, telling lies, strange procession, pointed, painted, paper face, peer, pieces, hats, raised, crowded place, statue, monster lizard, tremble, swim, celestial picnic, eager, alert, very keen, American,

Book Short Summary:

'I love her books - particularly the Five Children and It sequence' - Neil Gaiman THIS IS THE SECOND BOOK IN THE PSAMMEAD TRILOGY, FOLLOWING FIVE CHILDREN AND IT Contains all of the original illustrations by H. R. Millar, beautifully reproduced. 'For the egg was now red-hot, and inside it something was moving. Next moment there was a soft cracking sound; the egg burst in two, and out of it came a flame-coloured bird...' When a stone egg rolls out of the old rug that has been bought for the nursery, the children think nothing of it. A lovely glowing yellow, they place it on the mantelpiece to brighten up the room. But when the egg accidentally drops into the fire, a strange thing happens: out hatches a phoenix, resplendent in golden feathers - and very vain. If that weren't enough of a surprise, it tells them that their carpet is magic: it will take them to any place that they wish to visit - over their dusty London streets to the French coast, to tropical islands and an Indian bazaar. Guiding them throughout their adventures - though he's often more a hindrance than a help - is their new friend, the phoenix. 'The cheerful, child-centred anarchy of Five Children and It is still my inspiration and delight' Kate Saunders, Guardian 'My all-time favourite classic children's author' Jacqueline Wilson 'If Britain is to children's fantasy as Brazil is to football, then Edith Nesbit is our Pele - endlessly surprising and inventive. But she is more than that. There were fantasy writers before Edith Nesbit but she is the one that brought the magical and the mundane together in a moment of nuclear fusion. She opened the door in the magic wardrobe, pointed the way to platform nine and three quarters. She even had a hand in building the Tardis. And these are among her minor achievements. She is also simply the funniest writer we have ever had, while being the one who could most easily and sweetly break your heart with a phrase. Just try saying "Daddy oh my Daddy" without catching your breath. She made the magic worlds feel as near as the Lewisham Road and she bathed the Lewisham Road in magic' Frank Cottrell-Boyce This collection of the best in children's literature, curated by Virago, will be coveted by children and adults alike. These are timeless tales with beautiful covers, that will be treasured and shared across the generations. Some titles you will already know; some will be new to you, but there are stories for everyone to love, whatever your age. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.

Book Short Summary:

In the tradition of Edward Eager and E.L. Konigsburg, a novel about the excitement—and the dangers—of wishing. Tess and her brother, Max, are sent for the summer to their aunt’s sleepy village in the English countryside, where excitement is as rare as a good wifi signal. So when Tess stumbles upon an old brass key that unlocks an ornately carved gate, attached to a strangely invisible wall, she jumps at the chance for adventure. And the world beyond the gate doesn’t disappoint. She finds rose gardens, a maze made of hedges, and a boy named William who is just as lonely as she is. But at William’s castle, strange things begin to happen. Carnival games are paid for in wishes, dreams seem to come alive, and then there's William's eerie warning: Beware of the hawthorn trees. A warning that chills Tess to the bone. In a magical, fantasy world that blurs the line between reality and imagination, readers are left to wonder exactly what they’d wish for if wishes could come true. Perfect for fans of Half Magic and The Secret Garden—and for anyone who's ever wondered if magic is real. For the further adventures of Tess and Max, be sure to check out Amy Ephron's Carnival Magic! Praise for The Castle in the Mist: “Bursting with imagination and warmth, Amy Ephron’s first novel for young people is a magical book in all ways.”—Holly Goldberg Sloan, New York Times bestselling author of Counting by 7s "This beautiful story’s quiet, peaceful tone nicely evokes both the serenity of country life and the haunting magic of the castle, and the emotional heft of Tess and Max’s separation from their parents, as well as their strong bond, keeps the tale firmly grounded in reality. Perfect for middle-graders who love classic fantasy."—Booklist "Rich description of the castle along with an elaborate map at the book's beginning and an illustration at the end enhance the fantasy world....A sequel is suggested; beguiled readers will hope it happens."—Kirkus Reviews "There are scenes...that are transcendent in their beautiful, ethereal descriptions [in this] uplifting novel about family and connection."—BCCB "A slightly darker, updated take on magical realism classics such as Edward Eager’s Half Magic and E. Nesbit’s The Enchanted Castle."—School Library Journal "A near-perfect 9....This book defies gravity because it’s hard to put down!"—Time for Kids, kid reporter "Ephron renders this magical world with such assertive beauty that readers of all ages, who are fortunate enough to believe in the power of magic, will enjoy immersing themselves in the roller-coaster fun of these stories, and come to trust, even if for a short time, that in this 'alternate universe' it is possible for us to come together and 'touch the sky.'"—Jewish Journal

Book Short Summary:

Three sweeping tales of art, long-buried secrets, and abandoned castles from bestselling author Kristy Cambron—now available in one collection. The Lost Castle Broken-down walls and crumbling stones seemed to possess a secret language all their own. What stories would they tell, if she finally listened? Bridging the past to the present in three time periods—the French Revolution, World War II, and present day—The Lost Castle is a story of loves won and lost, of battles waged in the hearts of men, and of an enchanted castle that stood witness to it all, inspiring a legacy of faith through the generations. Castle on the Rise A storied castle. A band of rebels. A nation chasing a centuries-old dream of freedom. And three women who rise above it all . . . From the storied streets of Dublin to the shores of the Emerald Isle, Castle on the Rise unites the legacy of three women who must risk mending the broken places within for life, love, and the belief that even through the depths of our pain, a masterpiece of a story can emerge. The Painted Castle A lost painting of Queen Victoria. A library bricked off from the world. And three women, separated by time, whose lives are irrevocably changed. Set in three time periods—the rapid change of Victorian England, the peak of England’s home-front tensions at the end of WWII, and modern day—The Painted Castle unfolds a story of heartache and hope and unlocks secrets lost for generations just waiting to be found. Praise for the Lost Castle series: “Another page turner! Kristy Cambron will enthrall readers with this gripping tale of three uniquely troubled women from different centuries yet linked by secrets hidden behind the walls of an ancient English castle. Enjoy the ride as Cambron uses her trademark skill peeling away the mystery surrounding East Suffolk’s Parham Hill Estate and the answer to each woman’s heart—one tantalizing layer at a time. The Painted Castle is a story compelling, beautifully written, and sure to thrill a broad range of historical fiction fans!” —Kate Breslin, bestselling author of Far Side of the Sea “Enchanting and mesmerizing! Castle on the Rise enters an alluring land and time with a tale to be treasured. Ireland comes to life with as much vivid light as the characters of this dual-timeline tale of redemption and love. For those of us who love Ireland and its misty shores, its myths, and its mysteries, Kristy Cambron brings it all to life. More than once I wished to walk through the pages of Castle on the Rise and join Cambron’s magnificent women on a quest for the truth, and for love.” —Patti Callahan, New York Times bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis “As intricate as a French tapestry, as lush as the Loire Valley, and as rich as heroine Ellie’s favorite pain au chocolat, The Lost Castle satisfies on every level. The three timelines weave and build upon each other, as the three heroines navigate dangerous times and unravel ancient secrets. Kristy Cambron’s writing evokes each era in loving detail, and the romances are touching and poignant. C’est bon!” —Sarah Sundin, award-winning author of The Sea Before Us and the Waves of Freedom series
