Book Excerpt :

In Edinburgh, a couple, Rabih and Kirsten, fall in love. They get married, they have children -- but no relationship is as simple as "happily ever after." The Course of Love is a novel that explores what happens after the birth of love, what it takes to maintain love, and what happens to our original ideals under the pressures of an average existence. With philosophical insight and psychological acumen, Alain de Botton shows that our Romantic dreams may do us a grave disservice -- and explores what the alternatives might be. The conclusion, as the characters gradually discover, is that love is not "an enthusiasm," but rather a "skill" that must be slowly and often painfully learnt. This is a Romantic novel in the true sense, one interested in exploring how love can survive and thrive in the long term.

Book Short Summary:

From the international bestselling author of The Architecture of Happiness and How Proust Can Change Your Life comes this lyrical, erudite look at our world of work. We spend most of our time at work, but what we do there rarely gets discussed in the sort of lyrical and descriptive prose our efforts surely deserve. Determined to correct this lapse, armed with a poetic perspective and his trademark philosophical sharpness, Alain de Botton heads out into the world of offices and factories, ready to take in the beauty, interest, and sheer strangeness of the modern workplace. De Botton spends time in and around some less familiar work environments, including warehouses, container ports, rocket launch pads, and power stations, and follows scientists, landscape painters, accountants, cookie manufacturers, therapists, entrepreneurs, and aircraft salesmen as they do their jobs. Along the way, de Botton tries to answer some of the most urgent questions we can pose about work: Why do we do it? What makes it pleasurable? What is its meaning? To what end do we daily exhaust not only ourselves but also our planet? Equally intrigued by work’s pleasures and its pains, Alain de Botton offers a characteristically lucid and witty tour of the working day and night, in a book sure to inspire a range of life-changing and wise thoughts.

ONE OF THE MOST LOVED NOVELS OF THE DECADE. A long-lost book reappears, mysteriously connecting an old man searching for his son and a girl seeking a cure for her widowed mother's loneliness. Leo Gursky taps his radiator each evening to let his upstairs neighbor know he’s still alive. But it wasn’t always like this: in the Polish village of his youth, he fell in love and wrote a book…Sixty years later and half a world away, fourteen-year-old Alma, who was named after a character in that book, undertakes an adventure to find her namesake and save her family. With virtuosic skill and soaring imaginative power, Nicole Krauss gradually draws these stories together toward a climax of "extraordinary depth and beauty" (Newsday).

Book Short Summary:

Love may be all around us, but it often seems more as if our conceptions of love are all over the place. In this intelligent and fascinating new book, released in time for St Valentine's Day, popular philosopher Mark Vernon argues that we have a tendency to approach questions about love as if there was a key to love that we must unlock. No more clearly is this shown than in our eagerness to learn about the science of love. Mark explores the ideas of neuroscientists and psychologists, who have become the modern-day oracles of love. But, he goes on, science is limited - we can learn more of love from Shakespeare than from Darwin.

NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2020! NPR BEST BOOK OF 2020 PEOPLE MAGAZINE TOP TEN BOOKS OF THE YEAR BOOKPAGE BEST BOOK OF 2020 GOOD HOUSEKEEPING BEST BOOK OF 2020 “A sensual and perceptive novel. . . . With humor and humanity, Miller resists the simple scorned-wife story and instead crafts a revelatory tale of the complexities—and the absurdities—of love, infidelity, and grief.” —O, the Oprah Magazine A brilliantly insightful novel, engrossing and haunting, about marriage, love, family, happiness and sorrow, from New York Times bestselling author Sue Miller. Graham and Annie have been married for nearly thirty years. Their seemingly effortless devotion has long been the envy of their circle of friends and acquaintances. By all appearances, they are a golden couple. Graham is a bookseller, a big, gregarious man with large appetites—curious, eager to please, a lover of life, and the convivial host of frequent, lively parties at his and Annie’s comfortable house in Cambridge. Annie, more reserved and introspective, is a photographer. She is about to have her first gallery show after a six-year lull and is worried that the best years of her career may be behind her. They have two adult children; Lucas, Graham’s son with his first wife, Frieda, works in New York. Annie and Graham’s daughter, Sarah, lives in San Francisco. Though Frieda is an integral part of this far-flung, loving family, Annie feels confident in the knowledge that she is Graham’s last and greatest love. When Graham suddenly dies—this man whose enormous presence has seemed to dominate their lives together—Annie is lost. What is the point of going on, she wonders, without him? Then, while she is still mourning Graham intensely, she discovers a ruinous secret, one that will spiral her into darkness and force her to question whether she ever truly knew the man who loved her.

But when their glorified hookups start breaking the rules, one of them has to be smart enough to put on the brakes...

Book Short Summary:

“Fascinating. Doidge’s book is a remarkable and hopeful portrait of the endless adaptability of the human brain.”—Oliver Sacks, MD, author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat What is neuroplasticity? Is it possible to change your brain? Norman Doidge’s inspiring guide to the new brain science explains all of this and more An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable, and proving that it is, in fact, possible to change your brain. Psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity, its healing powers, and the people whose lives they’ve transformed—people whose mental limitations, brain damage or brain trauma were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.

The Concept of Love is a way of protecting yourself as you try your hand at love. Love is the greatest feeling in life, so why is there so much pain and suffering attached to it? All my life, I have seen many attempts at love, including my own. Ive learned the root cause of whats going wrong with love. The half-heart concept allows us to keep in mind the conceptual view of love, from where love begins to the creation of eternal love. It also teaches us how to avoid and be aware of what love is not, which is the cause of all our suffering in love. The half-heart shape is you. It represents the love you have for yourself, which is where love begins, and it should look like you. Once you love yourself for everything you are and begin to look for your talents, skills, and who you truly are, then youll become the half-heart imageone that is unique to only you. As you live your life seeing how important you are in it, there will come a time when you will be interested in the possibility of loving outwardly. You will then use the three stages of love in their conceptual comprehension to guide you safely through love. It will be the half hearts who will change the course of love and, in essence, begin to change the world as a whole.

USA Today Bestselling Author, Lexy Timms, brings you a new series About Love and everything in between the road to forever. The course of true love never did run smooth... William Shakespeare Book 1 - About Love After losing her money and fiancé in one go, Kellie Margolis, the one-time owner of a lucrative business, checks out of society. She needs to become something—or someone—unassuming. She's hired on as a waitress at a bar called Darkness. It's in a dangerous part of town, locally known for its Russian-American population. Unexpectedly, her new life involves the erotic, shady, and incredibly charming Sasha Petrov. Sasha's too good-looking for words. Life for Kellie becomes passionate, adventurous, erotic, and bold—but by no means simple. Though too many signals say Sasha plays dirty, Kellie decides she'd be a fool to deny herself the pleasure he brings her. Their affair becomes more like a fairy tale, and Kellie starts believing Sasha is the love she deserves after her hard times. When Kellie's past unexpectedly comes full circle, she realizes how small the world really is. Will an unforeseen discovery break Kellie's heart for good, or will Sasha be the bad boy hero he's set himself up to be? Book 2 - About Truth What could be sexier than a smoking-hot Russian man built like a brick house? One who is so into you... High on a hot, romantic love affair, young and pretty Kallie Margolis has everything—almost. She has a beautiful house, all the money she needs, and the undivided attention of the most magnificent man she could ever imagine. Only, she doesn't have to just imagine him because Sasha Petrov is gorgeous, larger than life, unbelievable in bed, and very real. Sasha is also the one who unwittingly helped ruin everything Kallie once had, and still she fell for him. He earns his living on the mean streets of Baltimore in ways Kallie doesn't want to know. Their animal need for one another rockets them way beyond all that, and they have the time of their lives as Sasha makes it all up to her. Just when the world could not get rosier, their passion more off the hook, the bottom threatens to drop out. Has Sasha played Kallie for a fool? Is he going to take her for another ride? Or can Kallie trust the sensual bad boy when he says his for love her, not a life of crime, is what drives him? Book 3 - About Forever There comes a time, even in the hottest relationship ever, when enough is enough. But cutting off the magnificent and gorgeous bad boy Sasha Petrov is like cutting off an arm; Kallie Margolis just can't do it. His dangerous charm and once-in-a-lifetime passion. If anyone had told her before she left town on the fly that Sasha wasn't right for her, she couldn't even imagine it. But once again, Kallie finds herself waking up in rustic, beach-front digs trying to make sense of it all. Getting away to sort it out isn't an option, because Sasha is always one step behind. He lures her back into his powerful arms just by being near. He tries being cold and callous to teach her a lesson for taking off, but he can no more be angry with her than she can break up with him. When things look like they're going to straighten out for the two of them the never-been-caught street-smart Sasha is arrested, this time for a fairly serious crime. He's a self-employed businessman who unapologetically deals with things not quite legal. Will the fallout of his shady pursuits be the end of the sweetest love Kallie believes she will ever find? Or will Sasha beat the odds and make it back to Kallie's bed, and into her heart for good? Book Short Summary:

Love. It has forever inspired poets, and those touched by its power and grace still find new words to celebrate it. Nothing moves the spirit or the pen of the poet quite like love. Author June Cotner has long been fascinated by the course of the lifetime relationship between husbands and wives: from the electric sizzle and wild imaginings of love's beginning through the early years of marriage, filled with discovery and grand dreams of the future, and ultimately till the day we part, still in love and grateful for the lifetime companionship. In Forever in Love, Cotner has collected her favorite love poems and arranged them in chapters set as mileposts in love's long journey. Beginning entries include "The Search," "Attraction," "Longing," and "Courtship." The middle chapters include "Commitment," "Early Years," and "Daily Life," and the book closes with poems gathered under the headings of "Partings" and "Reflections." Cotner's selections for this compendium are as inspired as the words themselves. Classic writers such as Dickinson, Shakespeare, and Browning lend well-loved words, but this broad-ranging collection draws most of its content from poets writing today, assuring that every reader will discover many new gems to share with one's partner.

Book Short Summary:

A charged, hypnotic debut novel about a boy’s life-changing summer in rural Pakistan: a story of fathers, sons, and the consequences of desire. At age sixteen, Fahad hopes to spend the summer with his mother in London. His father, Rafik, has other plans: hauling his son to Abad, the family’s feudal estate in upcountry, Pakistan. Rafik wants to toughen up his sensitive boy, to teach him about power, duty, family—to make him a man. He enlists Ali, a local teenager, in this project, hoping his presence will prove instructive. Instead, over the course of one hot, indolent season, attraction blooms between the two boys, and Fahad finds himself seduced by the wildness of the land and its inhabitants: the people, who revere and revile his father in turn; cousin Mousey, who lives alone with a man he calls his manager; and most of all, Ali, who threatens to unearth all that is hidden. Decades later, Fahad is living abroad when he receives a call from his mother summoning him home. His return will force him to face the past. Taymour Soomro’s Other Names for Love is a tale of masculinity, inheritance, and desire set against the backdrop of a country’s troubled history, told with uncommon urgency and beauty.

Book Short Summary:

Relationships give us some of our best moments . . . and also our worst. It’s no wonder we’re so preoccupied with them—whether that’s fantasizing about your ideal partner or trying to save a marriage, pacifying a difficult colleague or struggling to control a rebellious child. There are thousands of books promising to reveal the secret of how to improve your relationships. But what if relationship problems had nothing to do with the specific people involved, their personalities or their life stories? What if instead they resulted from a mistaken understanding about what a relationship is for? What is its true purpose? Typically, relationships are special arrangements made between two people. A Course in Miracles takes a radically different approach. It teaches that relationships are the classrooms in which we learn to awaken to our true nature, which is only love. They are crucibles for enlightenment. Seen in this way: • We don’t “get” love from a partner nor do we have to give up anything in order to get it. • We don’t search for it out there in the world. • The love comes first, from within, then infuses all of our relationships. • To be open to this love, we release our judgments and grievances about others—what the Course calls “forgiveness”—understanding that by freeing them, we free ourselves. From Loving One to One Love is not another how-to-fix-it guide to relationships. By applying the Course’s principles, we can achieve an experience of love that is beyond anything we can imagine: a universal love that’s not limited to any one special person or group, but shines on all alike. We learn to see each other anew—not as separate individuals with competing needs and agendas, but through the eyes of love. We learn to love as God loves.

Book Short Summary:

This is the book of a long storied novel, entitled as 'The Skyfall' containing a few side stories also, certain imaginary scenes, episodes, events and incidences, characters, dialogues and some other very interesting phenomena, underlying a few more fanciful and also to some extent more factual descriptions of life or living pertaining to family and the outward society. It has been divided into two parts. Part 1st is based on 1 to 8 chapters and the Part 2nd covers as many as 9 to 14 chapters in all. This novel is, really speaking, a mixture of tragedy, romance and comedy. Hence, the running spirit of the story looks like a perfect novel because of the fact that I preferred to choose such a new style; it corresponds to my taste. There is a variety of wonderful imaginations which are attempted to be produced in such a way as to look like the real one. As such, the role of imagination has also been tried to be highly lighted; it was necessary from the literary point of view. In its analysis the book is entitled as 'The Skyfall' which basically contains five love stories, three wide spread kingdoms and eight devastative battles. The main Story is related to a person's deep love and lust for obtaining a state and becoming a king of such a kingdom or state. Apparently he looks normal but internally he is a villain having the madness for achieving his goal. 'The Skyfall', the name, appears dreadful, may it be so, because apparently the meaning of the title so given is 'bursting forth of the sky'. May not, nowhere happen so; if any how anywhere lt happens, the result will be shaking heart, disastrous and horrible. But it is certain that it will happen at every cost before the day of judgment, the so called 'Qayamat' when the whole universe will be destroyed and nothing shall remain in being except God. However, in spite of all this I have tried my best to create a healthy and harmonious atmosphere, an amusing as well as a most charming situation along with a peculiar pleasantness and also a tinge of sweetness in putting up the scenes, the characters, the dialogues etc. running between the major figures of the story or novel-hero and heroine, if there in, and so on. It's of course a nice book of fictions or story or stories in which basically the characters of L. W. Doson, A. Adams, A. Doson, L. Lorenzo, R. Doson, Am. Doson, M. Arden, B. Jonson, R.D. Spenser, M. Robinson and J. Watson have artistically been produced to read and relish the sweet, sour and saline flavors implied there in. A brief account of their different characters has also been given in the onward passages. I believe that the story of the novel must have all that which the readers may desire and expect. I have been passionate to a plausible extent to enrich the story of the novel with some of the heart touching experiences of life. I am sure that the readers will find in it the flavor of their personal interests, viz., pain, pleasure, pathos, thrill, dismay, terror, excitement, horror, love, hate, sympathy, apathy and also so much, so that. But apart from all these qualities it has been my strenuous efforts to shield out the story from the suspense with a view to let the readers feel free and entirely relaxed.
