Book Short Summary:

"Over the blazing campfires, where the wind moaned eerily through the thickets of juniper and fir, they spoke of it in the Indian tongue—the strange lake to the southward whose waters never rest. And Nawa, the medicine man, who had lived such countless moons that not even the oldest member of his people could remember a time when Nawa was not old, declared that, if only you arrived at the right time, on the right night, you would see the buffaloes rise out of the middle of the lake and come crowding to the shore; for there, he said, was the sacred spot where the buffaloes began." Ten-year-old Little Wolf, an imaginative and courageous boy, is determined to observe this spectacle, and his quest leads not only to a miraculous vision but also to the salvation of his tribe. This Caldecott Honor picture book and National Book Award nominee was hailed by Booklist as "an eminent picture book and, incidentally, one that proves that black and white can move as forcefully as color." The New York Times praised artist Stephen Gammell for his "spectacular scenes of tumbling clouds, of earth churned by flying hoofs, of teepees in the early dawn. But most of all he conveys the hulking, surging, rampaging strength of the shaggy buffaloes as they rise out of a shadowy mist, the mist of legend or dream."

Book Short Summary:

A spirited Black Lizard anthology with over a thousand pages of haunted—and haunting—ghost tales. Includes eerie vintage ghost illustrations. The ghost story is perhaps the oldest of all the supernatural literary genres and has captured the imagination of almost every writer to put pen to the page. Here, Edgar Award-winning editor Otto Penzler has followed his keen sense of the supernatural to collect the most chilling and uncanny tales in the canon. These spectral stories span more than a hundred years, from modern-day horrors by Joyce Carol Oates, Chet Williamson and Andrew Klavan, to pulp yarns from August Derleth, Greye La Spina, and M. L. Humphreys, to the atmospheric Victorian tales of Rudyard Kipling, Edith Wharton, and H. P. Lovecraft, not to mention modern works by the likes of Donald E. Westlake and Isaac Asimov that are already classics. Some of these stories have haunted the canon for a century, while others are making their first ghoulish appearance in book form. Whether you prefer possessive poltergeists, awful apparitions, or friendly phantoms, these stories are guaranteed to thrill you, tingle the spine, or tickle the funny bone, and keep you turning the pages with fearful delight. Including such classics as “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Open Window” and eerie vintage illustrations, and also featuring haunted mansions, midnight frights, lovers from beyond the grave, rapping, tapping, wailing shades, and ghosts, ghouls, and specters galore! Book Short Summary:

The Allegory of the Cave, or Plato's Cave, was presented by the Greek philosopher Plato in his work Republic (514a–520a) to compare "the effect of education (παιδεία) and the lack of it on our nature". It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, narrated by the latter. The allegory is presented after the analogy of the sun (508b–509c) and the analogy of the divided line (509d–511e). All three are characterized in relation to dialectic at the end of Books VII and VIII (531d–534e). Plato has Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners' reality.

Book Short Summary:

Twenty-Five Ghost Stories BY W. BOB HOLLAND This collection of ghost stories owes its publication to an interest that I have long felt in the supernatural and in works of the imagination. As a child I was deeply concerned in tales of spooks, haunted houses, wraiths and specters and stories of weird experiences, clanking chains, ghostly sights and gruesome sounds always held me spellbound and breathless. Experiences in editorial offices taught me that I was not alone in liking stories of mystery. The desire to know something of that existence that is veiled by Death is equally potent in old age and in youth, and men, women and children like to be thrilled and to have a “creepy” feeling along the spinal column as the result of reading of a visitor from beyond the grave. This volume contains the most famous of the weird stories of Edgar Allan Poe, that master of this form of literature. “The Black Cat” contains all the needed element of mystery and supernatural, and yet the feline acts in a natural manner all of the time, and the story is quite possibly true. It is only in the manner of its{6} telling that the tale becomes one that fittingly finds its place in this collection. Guy de Maupassant, the clever Frenchman, is also represented by two effective bits of work, and other less widely known writers have also contributed stories that are worth reading, and when once read will be remembered. There is not a story among the twenty-five that is not worthy of close reading. There has recently been a revival in interest in ghost stories. Many of the high-class magazines have within a few months printed stories with supernatural incidents, and writers whose names are known to all who read have turned their attention to this form of literature. Whether or not the reader believe in ghosts, he cannot fail to be interested in this little book. Without venturing to express a positive opinion either way, I will only say with Hamlet: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Twenty-Five Ghost Stories BY W. BOB HOLLAND

Part of a new six-volume series of the best in classic horror, selected by Academy Award-winning director of The Shape of Water Guillermo del Toro Filmmaker and longtime horror literature fan Guillermo del Toro serves as the curator for the Penguin Horror series, a new collection of classic tales and poems by masters of the genre. Included here are some of del Toro’s favorites, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Ray Russell’s short story “Sardonicus,” considered by Stephen King to be “perhaps the finest example of the modern Gothic ever written,” to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and stories by Ray Bradbury, Joyce Carol Oates, Ted Klein, and Robert E. Howard. Featuring original cover art by Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley, these stunningly creepy deluxe hardcovers will be perfect additions to the shelves of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal aficionados everywhere. Haunted Castles Haunted Castles is the definitive, complete collection of Ray Russell's masterful Gothic horror stories, including the famously terrifying novella trio of "Sardonicus," "Sanguinarius," and "Sagittarius." The characters that sprawl through Haunted Castles are frightful to the core: the heartless monster holding two lovers in limbo; the beautiful dame journeying down a damned road toward depravity (with the help of an evil gypsy); the man who must wear his fatal crimes on his face in the form of an awful smile. Engrossing, grotesque, perverted, and completely entrancing, Russell's Gothic tales are the best kind of dreadful.

Book Short Summary:

Ghouls, ghosts, and macabre terrors stalk the night in this spine-tingling collection. With tales describing unnatural frights and haunting visions of cosmic terror, you will be taken on a journey into the disturbing imaginations of some of horror's greatest writers. The stories' heroes face incredible creatures, unknowable gods, and supernatural beings who have no regard for human life. Horror literature has its roots in the mists of time. In the 19th century, writers delved into ancient folk tales and local legends to inspire an entire genre. In the 20th century, the next generation of writers brought to life a brand new array of terrifying monsters. The authors in this volume range from Victorian pioneers, such as Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe, to the pulp writers of the 20th century, such as William Hope Hodgson and H. P. Lovecraft. The tradition of horror writing that developed took very different turns on either side of the Atlantic - while American authors turned to unknowable horrors and cosmic terrors, British writers such as E. F. Benson and M. R. James mastered a more familiar form, the classic ghost story. It was not only English-speakers who sought to terrify their readers. The French writer Guy de Maupassant, a prolific short story writer and pupil of the acclaimed novelist Gustave Flaubert, found ways to make his protagonists doubt their own sanity as they faced terrors that would drive any ordinary man mad. This collection of bone-chilling tales comes from the pens of some of horror's most acclaimed writers. Authors include: E. F. Benson Ambrose Bierce Francis Marion Crawford W. W. Jacobs M. R. James William Hope Hodgson H. P. Lovecraft Guy de Maupassant Edgar Allan Poe Bram Stoker

Book Short Summary:

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and their admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale as a literary form… As may naturally be expected of a form so closely connected with primal emotion, the horror-tale is as old as human thought and speech themselves. H. P. Lovecraft Horror intends to create an eerie and frightening atmosphere for the reader. Prevalent elements include ghosts, demons, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, the Devil, witches, monsters, dystopian and apocalyptic worlds, serial killers, cannibalism, psychopaths, cults, dark magic, Satanism, the macabre, gore, and torture. Book Short Summary:

Introductory price until release day! Nicki Sosebee is not your typical romance heroine. She works hard and plays even harder, curses like a sailor, and loves a good time…all to protect her broken heart. Nicki’s ready to make a better life for herself—if only she can stay alive long enough to reap the rewards. Follow her adventures in the first seven books of the series. No News is Good News – Nicki’s been learning the ropes as a novice investigative reporter. The job’s been boring…until now, probably because her small Colorado town seems sleepy. One of Winchester’s bad boys has been locked up for arson, but Nicki soon finds there’s a whole lot more to the story. Her naïveté gets her in hot water at every turn, but her gorgeous best friend Sean Ramsey, self-employed motorcycle mechanic, helps keep her in check. Nicki's been burning a candle for her cocky, hunky friend, but nothing will come of that unrequited love, even though she's always looking for a second chance. Meaning Sean is also distracting. And Nicki really needs to pay attention so she can write her first headline story…before her name ends up in the obituary section. Bad News Travels Fast – Nicki’s got it bad for her best friend Sean, but she doesn’t see her unrequited lust for him getting quenched anytime soon, so she buries herself in work. Shortly after interviewing a county commissioner, Nicki discovers that bad news travels fast when the commissioner’s office assistant turns up dead. But one guy’s bad news jumpstarts Nicki’s nose for news, and she relishes the chance to do some investigative reporting. All the News (that’s fit to print) – Just as Nicki’s love life starts heating up, a sexual predator roaming the streets of Winchester strikes fear in the hearts of the women in town. Nowhere is safe. Nicki investigates…and when she discovers the criminal in a place she least suspects, there’s no one who can save her. In the News – When a rash of robberies hits the downtown Winchester area, Nicki begins reporting the damage, hoping to help law enforcement bring the culprit to justice. It’s not long before she discovers that there’s far more to the story than the petty crimes she’s reporting. Spreading the News – Thanks to Sean, Nicki’s starting to pay lots more attention to what the politicians around Winchester are doing—and she decides to do something about it. When the City Council draws a line between the haves and have nots, Nicki decides to take a stand, and it won’t make her popular around her hometown.Meanwhile, Nicki finds herself in a love triangle and she thinks she knows what she wants…but does she really? Breaking News – Just as Nicki starts to figure out that her beloved town of Winchester maybe isn’t so safe or idyllic, she discovers even worse secrets that have been buried and ignored. When the teenage daughter of a Winchester lawyer is kidnapped, Nicki gets a glimpse of the darker elements of her town, leaving her wondering how she can use her position to expose what she’s found. Bad News First – Disillusioned, Nicki starts to believe she is nothing but a tiny cog in a big machine, and as she opens her eyes to all that’s around her, her life begins to fall apart. For the first time, she sees how deep the corruption goes in Winchester, so she does what she knows best—she reports what she finds, starting with the bad news first. If you like strong, sassy heroines and the hunky, rugged men they pine for in the backdrop of a small town hiding dark secrets, then you’ll love the Nicki Sosebee Stories!

Book Short Summary:

I start hating Oliver just after his older brother Christian’s death. I drag him down a road of humiliation and pain to try to cope with what his brother did to me. A few months after Christian’s passing, Oliver leaves town, and for the next two years, he is absent from my life. The demons claw their way back in, and I must learn to live with the secret that has destroyed me. Now I’m starting a new life, away from Gargle and away from my past, but everything crashes when I see Oliver the first day at university. It’s clear that many things have changed since we’ve been apart. Now he is captain of the rugby team and the most popular bloke on campus. Then he makes a bet and gives me an ultimatum: I leave Braxton forever and start somewhere else, or I stay and play his game… because he’s never forgotten that it was me who ruined his life two years ago.
