Book Short Summary:

Innovating with Integrity presents a comprehensive portrait of the local heroes—front-line public servants and middle managers—who are reinventing state and local government, and it offers practical recommendations for innovating successfully. Based on a study of more than 200 successful government innovations, this book is the first large-scale, systematic analysis of innovation in American government. Sandford Borins identifies the components of integrity that he finds in successful innovators, including the intellectual discipline to plan rigorously and to establish measurable goals; the ability to collaborate with others and accommodate criticism; and a willingness to mobilize both the private sector and the community. In addition to analyzing the common traits driving new initiatives, Borins shows the distinctive differences among six areas of innovation: information technology, organizational redesign, environmental and energy management, policing and community development, social services, and education. This trenchant analysis of what initiatives actually work and why contributes to both the practice and theory of public management. Its practical advice will be especially valuable for front-line government workers, public managers, union leaders, agency heads, politicians, and all concerned with reforming government.

Book Short Summary:

In the gut-wrenching stories of patients told by psychologist Dr. Caroline Sakai in this riveting book, you'll see the full range of human misery. Stories range from that of Josh, suicidal after fighting depression for years to Angelique, whose entire village was slaughtered during the Rwandan genocide. Yet both Josh and Angelique, as well as two dozen others whose cases are told in fascinating detail, recovered completely. The remarkable cure that worked so well for them is called Thought Field Therapy or TFT. It's often called "tapping" since it involves tapping with the fingertips on acupuncture points. A recent group of studies has shown that TFT is phenomenally effective at treating the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, as well as anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. Dr. Sakai has conducted much research into TFT, including several randomized controlled trials. She provides an expert introduction to tapping for beginners, as well as concluding with a section that shows professionals how to get the best results from TFT. It shows how TFT can promote post traumatic growth, the personal transformation that can result from traumatic experiences. It also shows how TFT can be used to promote resilience, the qualities that enable us to recover from life's inevitable challenges.

Reviewing several experiences of clinical work, the authors offer reflections on the personal experiences of women and couples and the difficulties which can be met when the desire for a child is disappointed. A maternity and parenting project can be frustrated by miscarriages and encounter the fear of infertility. How are the problems of sterility or spontaneous abortion experienced?

Divided into four parts, each part considers a different form of interaction between time and law, and change. The first part offers legal, theoretical and historical perspectives on the relationship between time and law, and how time shaped law and influences legal interpretation and constitutional change. The second part offers the reader an analysis of the different ways in which courts approach the impact of time on law, as well as theoretical and empirical reflections upon the meaning of the principle of legal certainty, legitimate expectations and the influence of law over time. The third part of the book analyses how legislation and the legislative process addresses time and change, and the various challenges they create to the legal order. The fourth and final part addresses the complex relationship between fast-paced technological change and the regulation of innovations.

It does not attract nice people to decorate you with praise and make you feel good. This book is a timely tool in the hands of those who are obedient to God’s will and are facing envy and opposition from the people around them. Don’t be surprised if doing the will of God produces envy in others. Everybody will not applaud you for doing the right thing and for producing great results. In this season of the “Love Revolution” you are likely to think that everyone loves you and take things for granted. Walking in love but at the same time protecting yourself from the envy of those who seek to destroy you is a balance you must attain.

This book will be a classic in its field." -- Philip G. Altbach, Monan Professor of Higher Education, Boston College "Professor Daniel C. Levy, a leading authority in the field of higher education and the nonprofit sector in Latin America, once again has opened an otherwise neglected field through his carefully researched and reported study of philanthropic support for university reform in the region. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, documentary evidence, interviews, and first hand experience with the actors and agencies involved, To Export Progress illuminates the vision and ideals inspiring international agencies, as much as the realities they confronted in deciding on grants and loans policy, from the 1960s to the 1980s. The book is strongly recommended for scholars and students of international education, for Latin American experts, and for philanthropic managers and educational administrators in the developing world." -- Jorge Balan, Senior Program Officer for Higher Education, The Ford Foundation. In this study of the attempts to export the modern Western university, its ideas, and its form to the Third World, Daniel C. Levy examines the development assistance provided by the Ford Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Inter-American Development Bank and their relations with local partners in Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s. Levy considers the funders, how they selected partners, which countries and institutions were favored, and to what effect. Based on meticulous research and careful analysis, the book provides a detailed look at philanthropic assistance to the region during the era of modernization and development in Latin America.

Book Short Summary:

Social indicators such as low socioeconomic status, minority status, battering, chronic illness, trauma, drug and alcohol addiction, and poor social environment are negative predictors of educational and social success. Why is it that some people, however, overcome adversity and succeed despite the odds? This study identifies and describes the context and factors involved for an ethnically diverse group of twenty adult women from low socioeconomic status being able to "succeed" despite the odds. Using qualitative in-depth oral history interviews, this study includes women whose voices are seldom heard in the literature - those who have many of the social indicators associated with failure, but who have defied the negative predictors for success and persisted beyond high school to post-secondary education. Among the questions explored are: How do these women define "success"? What were the barriers? What were the factors in overcoming adversity? and how can their voices inform policy and practice in adult and post-secondary educational programs? The data revealed the following major themes. The presence of dynamic advocates or "healers" who extend beyond traditional roles to help and "believe" in the women. The importance of social structures and programs designed to assist non-traditional women as they seek post-secondary education. Making a difference for others and giving back to their communities as definitions of "success". Barriers such as conflict with dominant group cultural capital, and destructive teaching practices. The importance of strong and supportive relationships with family and/or friends. The importance of connection to spiritual/religious practice and people.

Book Short Summary:

“Dr. Marcy Buehler prefaces her insightful self-help book The Conqueress by admitting something that will ring true for many: she took the world by storm in her youth even if it meant learning the hard way, but secretly, she felt deeply insecure. Her life steamrolled along with bravado in spite of this inconvenient fact until she experienced “The Fall,” losing what seemed to be everything of value — her husband, her financial success, and her prized possessions. Suddenly left face to face with her inner self, the blithe lack of self-awareness she clung to when things were easy turns to inescapable anguish. With a daughter to support, Dr. Marcy B determines to do the hard work of enduring, and eventually thriving, with a little help from an intrinsic spark of life she calls “The Conqueress.” To better herself, and inspire her daughter, she embarks on a transformative journey towards “allowing the intuitive voice of the Conqueress to guide the course of my life.” Dr. Marcy B proclaims that she’s done sacrificing her integrity and wants to “let go of the messages, standards, and opinions of others. There is no other choice.” Her shift is miraculous, having successfully recovered from the gamut: divorce, codependency, addiction, low self-worth, and eating disorders. So listen up because she’s prepared to teach us her ways. A transformational yoga experience led her to India and played a significant role in her spiritual awakening. Meanwhile, she’s equally comfortable dissecting neuroplasticity or “the ability of the physical brain to actually rewire itself and build new neural pathways.” This balance between the abstract and the practical makes for an enjoyable yet functional read, one that serves as both an inspirational text and a workbook. The doctor is in to disprove “the notion that one cannot be both scientific and spiritual,” and it’s a hopeful concept. They unite mightily to create a game plan for renewal that she calls the FEATs approach: Feel, Explore, Acceptance, Transform. Dr. Marcy B is a pro at outlines, so her book is structured handily. She identifies four necessary shifts for transformation to take hold: Physical, Psychological, Social, and Spiritual and integrates the use of light, sound, vibration, movement, and imagery throughout the book. These latter components help restore homeostasis, aka the stability and balance of your body’s systems. Note the plentiful scientific terms and evidence peppered throughout. While Dr. Marcy B says that “my most profound experiences of spiritual knowledge served as a reminder to trust myself - to always trust myself,” her engagement with a solid factual foundation allows us to trust her too. Additionally, she writes in an extremely accessible style, presenting lessons that are easily understood but speak volumes. Like a gentle therapist, (therapy is something she sincerely encourages by the way) she offers kind, empathetic advice backed by years of study. I’m sure you’ve heard that people are onions. Dr. Marcy B takes that metaphor and runs with it, describing our journey as peeling back four layers through the application of FEATs. The first layer contains tools of mindfulness, breath and meditation, and a breakdown of each. She even provides a soothing meditation script. In layer two, when we explore, we start getting to the sources of “fear-based messages and false and limiting beliefs.” She again introduces tools, one being journaling. To those of you who sit and exasperatedly stare at a blank notebook page, never fear; our author gives directions to optimize the experience and make the most of this potentially powerful tool. Layer three, Acceptance, is a tricky one. After all, the author herself had a plan for her perfect life that she had to relinquish. Naturally, a little perspective shift and some incorporation of gratitude didn’t hurt, but she has still more tips and tricks up her sleeve. The final layer, Transform, utilizes imagery and visualizations to narrow in on that inner Conqueress. Dr. Marcy B details her own “unfolding,” and assures us that we too “now have the Tools to transform your life. The outcome will exceed your wildest dreams. Trust the Conqueress to know how to achieve them.” Closing The Conqueress, the reader indeed has plenty to work with and work towards; the journey is led by a sincerely gifted guide in Dr. Marcy Buehler. ” BookTrib, 2021
