Book Excerpt :

A young man in his teens is transported from our world to a magical realm that contains seven levels of reality. Very quickly transformed by magic into a grown man of heroic proportions, he takes the name Able and sets out on a quest to find the sword that has been promised to him, a sword he will get from a dragon, the one very special blade that will help him fulfill his life ambition to become a knight and a true hero. Inside, however, Able remains a boy, and he must grow in every sense to survive the dangers and delights that lie ahead in encounters with giants, elves, wizards, and dragons. His adventure will conclude next year in the second volume of The Wizard Knight, The Wizard. Gene Wolfe is one of the most widely praised masters of SF and fantasy. He is the winner of the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, the Nebula Award, twice, the World Fantasy Award, twice, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, the British Fantasy Award, and France's Prix Apollo. His popular successes include the four-volume classic The Book of the New Sun. With this new series, Wolfe not only surpasses all the most popular genre writers of the last three decades, he takes on the legends of the past century, in a work that will be favorably compared with the best of J. R. R. Tolkien, E. R. Eddison, Mervyn Peake, and T. H. White. This is a book---and a series---for the ages, from perhaps the greatest living writer in (or outside) the fantasy genre. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Who HQ brings you the stories behind the most beloved characters of our time. We're off to see the Wizard...along with Dorothy, Toto, and all of her friends as they make their way onto the What Is the Story of? list. When L. Frank Baum wrote about the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy and her pet dog in the magical Land of Oz in 1900, he wanted to create a beautiful story based on the America he knew and treasured. But he had no idea his book would become a bestseller and grow into the cultural phenomenon that it is today. After the iconic 1939 film, numerous sequels, retellings, and musicals, it's easy to see why The Wizard of Oz has been called "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale." From Baum's first book through Wicked, the story of The Wizard of Oz is as fascinating as the tale itself.

Book Short Summary:

The Tensome are back at Wizard school for their fourth and final year. When they graduate they will be Wizards. What obstacles and opportunities lie in their path? Before they return, the Tensome are determined to get Shmedley a Wand. This is his last year of Wizard School. He really needs to have a Wand. Shmedley has made it through three years of Wizard School very successfully without having a Wand. But the Tensome think that he'll really need to have one this year. And besides, he's been without a Wand for too long. And if you think that's bad for Shmedley, what about the poor author? What will we find out about Shmedley's Parents this year? I mean what will we find out about those impostors who pretended to be his parents until they could ship him off to Wizard School. And who sends a kid to Wizard School without a Wand? Once they graduate, then what will they do? They have little time to ponder that, they're too busy with school and with finding out about Dangerous Territory. Rating G; Reading Level Easy 5th Grade; Longest Word: Responsibilities What is a penumbra? It’s the lightest part of a shadow, the part at the edges. The umbra is the darker, inner part of a shadow. So, this book is about the lightest part of the shadow of the lives of Wizards School Students. It’s the story about how they’re about to graduate and embrace the life of Wizards. Up to this point, they have just been students. After they graduate, they’ll be acclaimed as Wizards – cap and all. What could possibly go wrong in their final year at Wizard School? How about accidentally traveling back in time? How about ending up in Wandmaking Class when you know nothing about that subject? And what will these students do after they graduate? The Principal has a surprise in store which may answer that question.

Book Short Summary:

A Wizard without a Wand? How can that be? Aren't Wizard and Wand almost synonomous? In this first book of the series, we meet this Wizard without a Wand - Shmedley Thrumbledack and his closest friends in their first year at some Wizard School. This Wizard School is so expensive, that Shmedley’s parents run out of money buying his supplies and don’t have enough left over to buy him a Wand. Shmedley is part of a group of kind students dubbed The Tensome. Shmedley is very smart in Wizard Math and knows exactly how much a kajillion is. Rating G; Reading Level Very Easy 5th Grade; Longest Word: WizardetiquetteSchmedley Thumbledack is a young teenage boy on his way to Wizard School. He’s got three things going for him:1)When he says his last name, it sounds like thunder and lightning striking somewhere close by.2)He’s as smart as the seniors in Wizard Math.3)He has a full scholarship.About that full scholarship. It only pays for things once Schmedley arrives are Wizard School. It doesn’t pay for his transportation to Wizard School and home again. That’s understandable, but that means he’ll have to ride the Wizard School Bus. Even though his parents are very powerful wizards, they never seem to have much money. They certainly won’t be able to afford sending him on the Wizard School Train.Schmedley’s parents will have to buy his books, even Proper Wizardetiquette (Wizard Etiquette) which is certain to be Shmedley’s least favorite subject. They’ll even have to buy his books for Wizard Math, even though he’s certain to ace out of that subject on day one.And once his parents have finished buying the ticket for the Wizard School Bus, and have bought all of Shmedley’s books, they’re out of money. And there’s not enough left to buy Schmedley a Wand. But everyone knows that if you’re going to be a Wizard, you need a Wand. There’s just no way that Schmedley can go to Wizard School without a Wand. He would be the laughingstock. Bullies would no doubt pick on him. And the Wizard School would certainly send him home until he can return with a Wand.Yet, here he is on the Bus to Wizard School. Maybe when he arrives, they’ll have some used Wands. Maybe he can find one in the lost and found. Maybe somebody will lend him theirs when he needs one. Fat chance of that! One thing is certain. Without a Wand, Schmedley will certainly flunk out of Dousing – The Art of Putting Out Spells Gone Awry.Schmedley is off to a new adventure at Wizard School. Without a Wand, he’s unable to think about it. And he finds himself totally unprepared for what lies ahead. Some stories about Wizard Schools are rather dark. This one is mysterious, yet light. And there’s lots of humor. There will be surprises. And you’ll like the ending. This is book one of a ten book series.Genre – Fantasy, Magic, Young Adult (YA), Perhaps Middle Grades (MG), Dragons, Dinosaurs.Wizard Schools seem to have certain things in common. Dragons for instance. But Dinosaurs? Yep, this Wizard school also has those. They also have bullies as do other Wizard Schools. How will Schmedley be able to defend himself from them without his wand? Giants, perhaps. One of the students is very tall and very muscular. Most Wizard Schools have Dormitories. Sometimes they’re called houses. This Wizard School calls them hotels. The students at all Wizard Schools cast spells. In this one, they all have other special, magical abilities. If this were a book about superheros, those talents might be called superpowers. They all have teachers or professors, and principals or headmasters or headmistresses. And there are always tests, both the formal and informal kind.

And that means they can’t help their son figure out how to cope with it either. They had hoped that Wizard School would help, but it hasn’t. So they send Oscar Henry out into the world to figure it out. Why didn’t Oscar Henry tell someone he wouldn’t be returning? Why didn’t he tell the Tensome? Why didn’t he tell the Tomtons? Why oh Why oh Why? In this book, Oscar Henry becomes friends with two Hobos – Duosity Lemon and Hobo Sam. And they’re off to have a great time! Oscar Henry found out about Wizard School because the Wizard School Train would come through the railroad yard where he worked. His parents think it’s a school named after somebody named Wizard. They don’t know anything about magic. Oscar Henry goes home after his first year. Now he is 9 feet tall. His parents can’t figure him out. At that size, he should have been on the football team. But he’s too gentle. His parents ask Oscar Henry to go out into the world to figure out who he is and what his place in the world is. So he takes off, catching a ride on a freight train with two hobos who are his friends. They find jobs in various places. Oscar Henry is always trying to earn more so that he can return to Wizard School. But no matter how hard he tries, he just can’t make enough to do that. It’s not so much that he wants to return to Wizard School. But he misses his friends. And if he doesn’t return, he’ll never see them again. But a miracle is just around the corner. Read the book to find out what that is.

Crossing the void of time and space, Matt is whisked away to an enchanted world where speaking in rhymes works the most dazzling magic. There he wins not only fame and power as the Lord High Wizard, but the heart of the beautiful Queen Alisande. His dreams are shattered, though, when he learns that he can’t marry his true love; wizard or not, Matt is just a commoner in this bizarre land. So Matt makes a foolish vow: to conquer a kingdom, any kingdom, if that’s what it takes to claim his bride. But, as Matt discovers, in this world of enchantment, such an oath cannot be broken. He has truly committed himself to win a crown or die trying. In search of lands to conquer, Matt sets his sights on neighboring Ibile, where the evil Gordorgrosso rules with an iron fist and sinister magic. Matt marches off against the tyrant, gathering a small band of unlikely allies, including a surly dracogriff, a well-spoken cyclop, and a damsel in distress. But against Gordogrosso’s foul genius, Matt is going to need much more than a few stout-hearted companions and some clever rhymes. . . . Oathbound Wizard is the newest addition to the Del Rey Imagine program, which offers the best in fantasy and science fiction for readers twelve and up. For all the fans of the classic Her Majesty's Wizard, here at last is the eagerly awaited sequel--an action-packed, laugh-laden new medieval fantasy. Leesha loses her boyfriend Shmedley Thrumbledack and gains him back. Shmedley plays a trick on the couple who were posing as his Parents. And the Tensome learns more about the movement of the Springboks, who Arlanda Florida the Principal is certain are up to no good. A bully becomes friends with Shmedley. Shmedley can be friends with almost anyone, so this is not that surprising. And Amanda Sunflower Triangulum also gains a friend. Read on to find out more of what happens with the Tensome during their third year at Wizard School. Rating G; Reading Level Easy 5th Grade; Longest Word: Classifications Female teenage wizard Leesha Fourthchild is very good at casting spells. But is she too good? Leesha casts a spell which doesn’t just make her disappear. This spell make her cease to exist. This is good because now she won’t ever have to worry about turning into a velociraptor ever again. She won’t have to worry about turning into a dangerous dinosaur who might hurt somebody. As long as she was with her boyfriend Shmedley Thrumbledack, she didn’t have to worry about that because he can turn her back into a human. Speaking of Shmedley, now that Leesha is no more, she’ll never get to hold hands with him again. She’ll never get to kiss him again. And she terribly misses him. How will Leesha be able to exist again? Who can help her? Leesha finds that there is one advantage to not existing. It makes it easier to spy on the underground world and find out what they’re up to. Shmedley is a Spring. A Spring is the opposite of an Offspring. If you’re a Spring you never had parents. This is different from an Orphan, for they once had parents. A Spring is also something that bounces. The Spring is a certain time of year. It opens the door to Summer, to better things. A Spring is a flow of water into a pool. A Spring is a magical being who has all these magical attributes. How can Shmedley use these forms of magic to help him. It’s good that he has some magic, because he doesn’t have a wand. And even though Wizard Math is good for solving problems, it’s not much help when you’re being picked on by bullies.

Book Short Summary:

From the bedtime story by L. Frank Baum to the classic 1939 film, no story has captured the imaginations of generations of children — and adults — like The Wizard of Oz. The story of Dorothy’s journey through Oz, the colorful characters, places, songs, and dialogue have permeated popular culture around the world. The contributors to this volume take a very close look at The Wizard of Oz and ask the tough questions about this wonderful tale. They wonder if someone can possess a virtue without knowing it, and if the realm of Oz was really the dream or if Kansas was the dream. Why does water melt the Wicked Witch of the West and why does Toto seem to know what the other characters can’t seem to figure out? The articles included tackle these compelling questions and more, encouraging readers to have discussions of their own.

Book Short Summary:

A lonely wizard moves to a new town in this charming children's story by renowned American poets Anne Sexton and Maxine Kumin, now in print again for the first time in decades. Everything is going wrong in the town of Drocknock until the new wizard arrives. He is very young, and he is lonely, and very nervous too; but he knows just where to find the right spells to stop the chicken pox epidemic and bring back the twenty cows that had disappeared. The drought is the town's most important problem, however. The new wizard needs five of his own tears to bring rain, but he is so happy in Drocknock he cannnot cry! "Peel an onion," the old wizard advises. "But," he warns, "beware, beware...a wizard's tears are powerful. They can make strange magic."..... The Wizard's Tears, first published in 1975, is moving and kind and funny in its intimate and modest way, yet strong and full of renewed life with stunning new illustrations from Keren Katz. Anne Sexton and Maxine Kumin had been friends for several years--having met at and carpooled to a Boston poetry workshop--when they began writing books together for younger readers. The creativity and versatility required for children's books offered the two poets the opportunity to experiment and play with language in new, unexpected ways, to connect world and words with humble, powerful, childlike imagery--"not unlike writing a poem where compression acts to intensify feelings," as Maxine reckoned.

Book Short Summary:

One of the most beloved film musicals of all time, The Wizard of Oz represents an enduring family favorite and cultural classic. Yet there is much more to the story than meets the eye, and the MGM movie is just one of many ways in which it has been represented. In this lively and wide-ranging book, editors Danielle Birkett and Dominic McHugh bring together insights from eleven experts into the varied musical forms this great American myth has taken in the past century. Starting with the early adaptations of L. Frank Baum's story, the book also explores the writing, composition and reception of the MGM film, its importance in queer culture, stage adaptations of the movie, cult classic The Wiz, Stephen Schwartz's Broadway blockbuster Wicked, and the cultural afterlife of the iconic Arlen-Harburg songs. What emerges is a vivid overview of how music - on stage and screen - has been an essential part of the story's journey to become a centerpiece of American culture.

Book Short Summary:

The Wizard of Oz FAQ is a fact-filled celebration of the beloved 1939 fantasy masterpiece starring Judy Garland. It's all here – from L. Frank Baum and his Oz novels to the complete background story of the movie's conception, development, and shoot, with special attention given to the little-known parade of uncredited directors, casting difficulties, and on-set accidents and gaffes, as well as more than 75 sidebars devoted to key cast members, directors, and other behind-the-scenes personnel. You'll find a wealth of fun facts: How MGM overworked Judy Garland before, during, and after Oz; why director Victor Fleming had his hands full with the Cowardly Lion and Dorothy's other friends; what it was about Toto that really bothered Judy; the physical horrors of filming in Technicolor; the racial Oz gag that was scripted but never shot; when the Wicked Witch was going to be beautiful; why The Wizard of Oz owes a lot to silent-screen star Mary Pickford; the story of deleted scenes, and a full two weeks of shooting that had to be scrapped; why MGM star Mickey Rooney was part of the movie's traveling publicity blitz; how the Wicked Witch was literally blown off her broomstick one day; the place where lions, tigers, and bears really do live together; singers you hear but never see; the day MGM fired Judy Garland; and much more. Just follow the yellow brick road!

Book Short Summary:

Example in this ebook CHAPTER I. Was this then the conclusion of all things—that there was nothing so perfect that it was worth a man's while to struggle for it; that any officious interference with the recognised and existing was a mistake; that nothing was either the best or the worst, but all things mere degrees in a round of the comparative, in which a little more or a little less was of no importance, and the most strenuous efforts tended to failure as much as indifference? Walter, returning to the old house which was his field of battle, questioned himself thus, with a sense of despair not lessened by the deeper self-ridicule within him, which asked, was he then so anxious for the best, so ready to sacrifice his comfort for an ideal excellence? That he, of all men, should have this to do, and yet that, being done, it should be altogether ineffectual, was a sort of climax of clumsy mortal failure and hopelessness. The only good thing he had done was the restoration of those half-evicted cotters, and that was but a mingled and uncertain good, it appeared. What was the use of any struggle? If it was his own personal freedom alone that he really wanted, why here it was within his power to purchase it—or at least a moderate amount of it—a comparative freedom, as everything was comparative. His mind by this time had ceased to be able to think, or even to perceive with any distinctness the phrase or motif inscribed upon one of those confused and idly-turning wheels of mental machinery which had stood in the place of thought to him. It was the afternoon when he got back, and everything within him had fallen into an afternoon dreariness. He lingered when he landed on the waste bit of grass that lay between the little landing-place and the door of the old castle. He had no heart to go in and sit down unoccupied in that room which had witnessed so many strange meetings. He was no longer indeed afraid of his visitor there, but rather looked forward with a kind of relief to the tangible presence which delivered him from meetings of the mind more subtle and painful. But he had no expectation of any visitor; nor was there anything for him to do except to sit down and perhaps attempt to read, which meant solely a delivering over of himself to his spiritual antagonists—for how was it possible to give his mind to any fable of literature in the midst of a parable so urgent and all-occupying, of his own? He stood therefore idly upon the neglected turf, watching the ripple of the water as it lapped against the rough stones on the edge. The breadth of the loch was entirely hidden from him by the projection of the old tower, which descended into the water at the right, and almost shut off this highest corner of Loch Houran into a little lakelet of its own. Walter heard the sound of oars and voices from the loch without seeing any one: but that was usual enough, and few people invaded his privacy: so that he was taken by surprise when, suddenly raising his eyes, he was aware of the polished and gilded galley from Birkenbraes, in which already Mr. Williamson, seated in the stern, had perceived and was hailing him. "Hallo, my Lord Erradeen! Here we've all come to see ye this fine afternoon. I told them we should find ye under your own vine and your own fig-tree." This speech was accompanied by a general laugh. The arrival of such a party, heralded by such laughter in a desolate house, with few servants and no readiness for any such emergency, to a young man in Walter's confused and distracted condition would not, it may be supposed, have been very welcome in any case, and at present in his exhaustion and dismay he stood and gazed at them with a sort of horror. There was not even a ready servitor like Hamish to assist in the disembarkation. To be continue in this ebook
