Book Excerpt :

As the title suggests, The Moonstone Legacy picks up the challenge of the last line of the famous Victorian novel by Wilkie Collins - "e;What will be the next adventure of the Moonstone? Who can tell?"e; The trilogy dives headlong into a compelling family saga as fourteen year-old Lizzy Abercrombie's mother dies in a tragic accident on the full moon. But was it really an accident? Lizzy discovers that her death may be linked to a mysterious family curse. Determined to find the truth, her quest takes her to the Temple of the Moon in India, where she uncovers the terrible past of her ancestor George Abercrombie. But even as she discovers that the curse was just an old wives' tale, the real truth puts her in mortal danger from a succession of ruthless enemies, culminating in a showdown at OneWorld, a sinister spiritual theme park in the desert of Almeria in southern Spain."e;Hugely enjoyable"e;, "e;most entertaining and enlightening"e;, "e;educational"e;, and "e;excellent"e;. These are some of the words used by many reviewers (who include William Dalrymple and Michael Morpurgo) to describe The Moonstone Legacy trilogy. And those are just the words beginning with 'e'. The trilogy defies categorisation - part East/West epic, part historical fiction, part family saga, part mystery adventure, part spiritual exploration and part science fiction, this fascinating multi-faceted book appeals to readers of all ages, colours and creeds, and has them"e;gripped to the pages"e; as they follow Lizzy Abercrombie, the young heroine, through her exciting adventures towards the trilogy's breathtakingly cosmic conclusion.Themes of gender equality and religious tolerance seamlessly meld with explorations of beliefs, multiculturalism and the nature of the universe as this sizzling page-turner literally plays out under the waxing and waning of the moon AA- uniquely, every one of its hundred and seventy chapters shows the exact phase of the moon during which events take place.Praise for the Moonstone Legacy TrilogyAnja C Andersen, Professor of Dark Cosmology, University of Copenhagen "e; 'Why is the universe so suited to life?' In successfully dramatising this compelling question, The Moonstone Legacy takes the reader on a thrilling voyage of mind and imagination, yet at the same time keeps us firmly rooting for our brave, funny and funky heroine through all her terrifying ordeals."e; Michael Berkeley, presenter of BBC Radio 3's "e;Private Passions"e;"e;A compulsive and entertaining read with gripping modulations every few bars. Hugely enjoyable."e; Susyn Blair-Hunt, MsD (Doctor of Metaphysics), Psychic, Astrologer, "e;The Moonstone Legacy is the most entertaining and enlightening book I've read in years! It speaks to all of us on a deep and resounding level, reawakening the childlike wonder and unfettered courage we should all live our lives by. If you read nothing else this year, the transformational power of The Moonstone Legacy is a must!"e; Praise for Book One, The Moonstone Legacy William Dalrymple"e;A most ingenious and imaginative sequel to my favourite Victorian novel."e; Michael Morpurgo"e;A compelling East-West adventure takes us from the Temple of the Moon on the remote coast of Gujarat, India, to an Anglo-Indian mansion on the Yorkshire moors. A sumptuous saga with an exciting cliff-hanger ending."e; "e;Book of the Month"e; "e;Beginning where Wilkie Collins' classic left off, it's hard to believe The Moonstone Legacy is a debut for the quality of the writing is exceptional and has a real timeless quality about it. The story itself is a terrific mix of mysterious quest and compelling family saga that visits the cultures of both East and will be utterly gripped to the pages."e;

Book Short Summary:

A giant diamond stolen from India; a rakish rogue; a naive teenager and a drug-fueled scandal. These are the leading parts that combine to make one of the greatest detective novels of all time. 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins laid many of the foundations for the detective genre. At heart, though, it is a great story. Rachel Verinder inherits a large Indian diamond on her 18th birthday. It turns out to have been stolen from India by her corrupt uncle and is of immense religious significance. When the diamond goes missing at Rachel's birthday party, it sparks a mystery that involves Indian jugglers, Hindu priests, an unlikely love story, betrayal, intrigue - and twists and turns to the final page. Collins was a close friend of Charles Dickens, who serialised 'The Moonstone' in his magazine 'All the Year Round'. In 2016 it was made into a five-part BBC TV series, starring John Thomson. It is an example of an epistolary novel: one written as a series of documents, including letters and diary entries. Other famous examples include Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' and Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist and playwright. His most popular novels are 'The Woman in White' - adapted for stage in 2004 by Andrew Lloyd Webber and for BBC TV in 2018, starring Ben Hardy and Jessie Buckley - and 'The Moonstone'. Collins was initially a tea merchant before his first novel 'Antonina' was published. Soon afterwards, his life was transformed by meeting and becoming friends with Charles Dickens. The great novelist became a mentor and helped him with his two classic novels.

Book Short Summary:

RESISTANCE IS ALL For years, writers and filmmakers have speculated about the possibility of the Earth being invaded by aliens from another planet. But what if the aliens have been watching us, infiltrating us via human collaborators, or even surgically altering themselves to look human? Occupied Earth is a groundbreaking anthology that explores the idea of what the world would look like years after its conquest. 20 years after a successful invasion by the Makh-Ra, humanity still exists, only it has become subservient to a race of occupiers who govern the devastated planet. But, as much at things continue with some sense of normalcy, something has happened in the Mahk-Ra’s empire. Earth, once considered a strategic beachhead of major importance to the Empire, has been downgraded in its value. Things are starting to degrade. Our planet is the last place any self-respecting Mahk-Ra officer wants to be assigned. Yet, despite everything, life continues. These stories bring us face to face with annihilation — and show how we can pull ourselves back from the brink. Featuring Rachel Howzell Hall, Lisa Morton, Matthew V. Clemens, Howard Hendrix, Nathan Walpow and more, OCCUPIED EARTH is coming. Stay safe. Stay strong. Survive at all costs.

Book Short Summary:

In her reading of detective fiction and passing narratives from the end of the nineteenth century forward, Jinny Huh investigates anxieties about race and detection. Adopting an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, she examines the racial formations of African Americans and Asian Americans not only in detective fiction (from Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan to the works of Pauline Hopkins) but also in narratives centered on detection itself (such as Winnifred Eaton’s rhetoric of undetection in her Japanese romances). In explicating the literary depictions of race-detection anxiety, Huh demonstrates how cultural, legal, and scientific discourses across diverse racial groups were also struggling with demands for racial decipherability. Anxieties of detection and undetection, she concludes, are not mutually exclusive but mutually dependent on each other's construction and formation in American history and culture.

Book Short Summary:

This book represents the first full-length study of the relationship between neo-Victorianism and nineteenth-century sensation fiction. It examines the diverse and multiple legacies of Victorian popular fiction by authors such as Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, tracing their influence on a range of genres and works, including detective fiction, YA writing, Gothic literature, and stage and screen adaptations. In doing so, it forces a reappraisal of critical understandings of neo-Victorianism in terms of its origins and meanings, as well as offering an important critical intervention in popular fiction studies. The work traces the afterlife of Victorian sensation fiction, taking in the neo-Gothic writing of Daphne du Maurier and Victoria Holt, contemporary popular historical detective and YA fiction by authors including Elizabeth Peters and Philip Pullman, and the literary fiction of writers such as Joanne Harris and Charles Palliser. The work will appeal to scholars and students of Victorian fiction, neo-Victorianism, and popular culture alike.
