Book Short Summary:

Complete the Cycle of Grace How sweet the sound–it saved a wretch like you. It’s amazing. But has God’s grace changed you? Is it changing others through you? Richard Blackaby explores what may be causing you to miss out on an abundant life of grace, and how simply knowing about it is a far cry from embracing a grace-filled lifestyle. Once you fully experience and grasp its essence, you can’t help but “practice” God’s undeserved favor by passing it on to everyone around you. Grace shares a close relationship with love, is never static, and is always searching for those willing to receive it. This book focuses on pointed and practical life application so that you can attain the power of gracious living today! Let God’s Grace Flow Through You God’s grace is so boundless, so contrary to human nature, and so unconditionally given that you will never understand it… …until you give it away. Get ready to be washed in pure joy, renewed by a fresh sense of gratitude for the rich, undeserved favor God continually bestows upon you. Dr. Richard Blackaby explores what it means to make God’s grace a lifestyle and how it will become personal, practical, and recognizable in your life. You’ll discover: What genuine grace is and what it is not The power of life words and the devastation of death words The secret to establishing a grace-filled home How to recognize grace-giving opportunities Ways to extend grace when you don’t think you can Unable to deny His unconditional love, or even to keep it to yourself, soon grace will have a face. And the reflection in your mirror will tell its story. Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound It’s a living, breathing testament to the depth of God’s love. You don’t deserve it, but you’ve got it. So, what are you doing with God’s amazing grace? Many Christians sing of its sweet sound, but fail to extend it to others–missing the point entirely. Putting a Face on Grace provides practical ways you can become a conduit of God’s grace to those around you. Dr. Richard Blackaby’s personal stories will have you nodding in agreement, laughing with empathetic understanding, and eagerly embracing a new life worth passing on. You will become the essential element that keeps God’s life-giving grace flowing. And if you think you’re unworthy of such an honor, that’s good. That’s grace… Story Behind the Book Much has been said about God’s grace. Observing it, defining it, soaking it in. But little has been said about bringing it full circle, to the point where we freely receive and give it on a daily basis. This is what lifestyle grace is all about. Richard Blackaby’s book hits a market in need, and “reinvents” grace for us all–exploding our understanding of this tremendous gift and bringing it into a new, tangible dimension.

Book Short Summary:

In the tradition of Daniel Levitin’s This Is Your Brain on Music and Oliver Sacks’ Musicophilia, Bad Singer follows the delightful journey of Tim Falconer as he tries to overcome tone deafness — and along the way discovers what we’re really hearing when we listen to music. Tim Falconer, a self-confessed “bad singer,” always wanted to make music, but soon after he starts singing lessons, he discovers that he’s part of only 2.5 percent of the population afflicted with amusia — in other words, he is scientifically tone-deaf. Bad Singer chronicles his quest to understand human evolution and music, the brain science behind tone-deafness, his search for ways to retrain the adult brain, and his investigation into what we really hear when we listen to music. In an effort to learn more about his brain disorder, he goes to a series of labs where the scientists who test him are as fascinated with him as he is with them. He also sets out to understand why we love music and deconstructs what we really hear when we listen to it. And he unlocks the secret that helps explain why music has such emotional power over us.

Book Short Summary:

African American women have played a pivotal part in rock and roll—from laying its foundations and singing chart-topping hits to influencing some of the genre's most iconic acts. Despite this, black women's importance to the music's history has been diminished by narratives of rock as a mostly white male enterprise. In Black Diamond Queens, Maureen Mahon draws on recordings, press coverage, archival materials, and interviews to document the history of African American women in rock and roll between the 1950s and the 1980s. Mahon details the musical contributions and cultural impact of Big Mama Thornton, LaVern Baker, Betty Davis, Tina Turner, Merry Clayton, Labelle, the Shirelles, and others, demonstrating how dominant views of gender, race, sexuality, and genre affected their careers. By uncovering this hidden history of black women in rock and roll, Mahon reveals a powerful sonic legacy that continues to reverberate into the twenty-first century.

Book Short Summary:

Is there a God? Does He love us? Is it possible to ask questions of Him and get answers? Can our sufferings actually become the greatest gift imaginable? Can true beauty really come from the ugliness of human pain? These questions and more are answered in this personal account of God's intervention in one particular family's life. Through overwhelming personal tragedy and anguish, the writer came to know God and developed an intimate relationship with Him. When others in similar circumstances might have turned against God and blamed Him for their trials, she turned to Him for help and solace instead, and He lovingly responded to her each and every prayer. While this is the true story of one woman’s conversion, it is so much more. It is a story of brokenness, and healing, of darkness and light. But most of all, it is a story of God’s unfathomable love for every human being and His unmistakable desire to walk beside us through every sorrow, holding us up when we can no longer stand ourselves. It must be read, not only by people who are suffering difficult trials or personal tragedies, but by every person who seeks to know the true meaning of life. Our hearts are restless, O Lord, until they find rest in You. St Augustine.

Encouraging Devotional Connections

Book Short Summary:

This devotional is for everyone. It was written with a pure heart for those that need encouragement, joy, peace, and most important a connection with their spiritual guide. That was its first intention and the last objective as it entered publishing. Encouraging Devotional Connections was born as brief email attachments written to Pastor Juanita's friends and colleagues. She wanted each devotional to be touching, give hope, and bring a sense of humor to those who read them. She felt that God was directing her to write these spiritual notes to others for over 10 years. Pastor Juanita admits that it was much later in the process of writing and sharing that the Lord quietly said to her that the writings were a "book". She said in her conversation with the Lord, "A what?" In time He showed her how many writings were saved in a file on her computer. She still replied, "Me, write a book?" And again in time He said, "It is Finished!" She said, “So much for that conversation.” Once Pastor Juanita accepted the purpose for the encouraging writings, she obediently began to read over them and they became a manuscript. She reported that despite the religious content of using a scripture to guide the thoughts and ending each writing with a prayer, she somehow (stubbornly) never meant the book to be a religious document and even while re-addressing the complication of these texts: She wanted this work to not just be for Christians, but for everyone no matter their persuasions or views. She had an overall commitment to touching others with hope, peace, and the knowledge that they are not alone and that we all share the commonality of daily life challenges, questions, and dilemmas. What is beautiful is that over the seasons these email attachments were being written she was ordained as an Elder, Pastored a Church, and was the CEO of a non-profit agency that provided Counseling services to those in need and without money. Go, figure! While there is no overlooking who her spiritual guide is, she believes in her heart that He Loves us all because He is Love. I John 4:16 says it well: "And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him." (New King James Version)

Book Short Summary:

From the Jim Crow world of 1920s Greenville, South Carolina, to Greenwich Village's Caf? Society in the '40s, to their 1974 Grammy-winning collaboration on "Loves Me Like a Rock," the Dixie Hummingbirds have been one of gospel's most durable and inspiring groups. Now, Jerry Zolten tells the Hummingbirds' fascinating story and with it the story of a changing music industry and a changing nation. When James Davis and his high-school friends starting singing together in a rural South Carolina church they could not have foreseen the road that was about to unfold before them. They began a ten-year jaunt of "wildcatting," traveling from town to town, working local radio stations, schools, and churches, struggling to make a name for themselves. By 1939 the a cappella singers were recording their four-part harmony spirituals on the prestigious Decca label. By 1942 they had moved north to Philadelphia and then New York where, backed by Lester Young's band, they regularly brought the house down at the city's first integrated nightclub, Caf? Society. From there the group rode a wave of popularity that would propel them to nation-wide tours, major record contracts, collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon, and a career still vibrant today as they approach their seventy-fifth anniversary. Drawing generously on interviews with Hank Ballard, Otis Williams, and other artists who worked with the Hummingbirds, as well as with members James Davis, Ira Tucker, Howard Carroll, and many others, The Dixie Hummingbirds brings vividly to life the growth of a gospel group and of gospel music itself.

Considered an essential work of Gothic fiction, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne is an early example of her prowess as a leading novelist of suspense and the supernatural. “This pile was venerable from its antiquity, and from its Gothic structure; but more venerable from the virtues which it enclosed. It was the residence of the still beautiful widow, and the children of the noble Earl of Athlin, who was slain by the hand of Malcolm, a neighbouring chief, proud, oppressive, revengeful; and still residing in all the pomp of feudal greatness, within a few miles of the castle of Athlin.” Raised in isolation in the high Castle of Athlin, Osbert and Mary have never known the rituals inherent to public life. As heirs to a once-mighty clan, they are haunted by the weight of their dead father’s legacy, shattered by his murderer Malcolm of Dunbayne. As sadness turns to rage, Osbert swears an oath to avenge his father, wandering off into the deep wilderness of the Highlands in search of men to aid him in his quest. Together with his clansmen and the peasant Alleyn, he launches an assault on Malcolm’s castle, risking everything to reclaim his honor. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Ann Radcliffe’s The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Short Summary:

Widespread distribution of recorded music via digital networks affects more than just business models and marketing strategies; it also alters the way we understand recordings, scenes and histories of popular music culture. This Is Not a Remix uncovers the analog roots of digital practices and brings the long history of copies and piracy into contact with contemporary controversies about the reproduction, use and circulation of recordings on the internet. Borschke examines the innovations that have sprung from the use of recording formats in grassroots music scenes, from the vinyl, tape and acetate that early disco DJs used to create remixes to the mp3 blogs and vinyl revivalists of the 21st century. This is Not A Remix challenges claims that 'remix culture' is a substantially new set of innovations and highlights the continuities and contradictions of the Internet era. Through an historical focus on copy as a property and practice, This Is Not a Remix focuses on questions about the materiality of media, its use and the aesthetic dimensions of reproduction and circulation in digital networks. Through a close look at sometimes illicit forms of composition-including remixes, edits, mashup, bootlegs and playlists-Borschke ponders how and why ideals of authenticity persist in networked cultures where copies and copying are ubiquitous and seemingly at odds with romantic constructions of authorship. By teasing out unspoken assumptions about media and culture, this book offers fresh perspectives on the cultural politics of intellectual property in the digital era and poses questions about the promises, possibilities and challenges of network visibility and mobility.

Book Short Summary:

A stirring picture book biography from award-winning duo Carole Boston Weatherford and Bryan Collier, about gospel composer and preacher Charles Albert Tindley, best known for the gospel hymn “We’ll Understand It Better By and By.” At a time when most African Americans were still enslaved, Charles Tindley was born free. His childhood was far from easy, with backbreaking hours in the fields, and no opportunity to go to school. But the spirituals he heard as he worked made him long to know how to read the Gospel for himself. Late at night, he taught himself to read from scraps of newspapers. From those small scraps, young Charles raised himself to become a founding father of American gospel music whose hymn was the basis for the Civil Rights anthem “We Shall Overcome.” Told in lilting verse with snippets of spirituals and Tindley’s own hymns woven throughout, Carole Boston Weatherford’s lyrical words and Bryan Collier’s luminous pictures celebrate a man whose music and conviction has inspired countless lives.

Book Short Summary:

From the acclaimed author of Last Train to Memphis, this is the definitive biography of Sam Cooke, one of most influential singers and songwriters of all time. Sam Cooke was among the first to blend gospel music and secular themes -- the early foundation of soul music. He was the opposite of Elvis: a black performer who appealed to white audiences, who wrote his own songs, who controlled his own business destiny. No biography has previously been written that fully captures Sam Cooke's accomplishments, the importance of his contribution to American music, the drama that accompanied his rise in the early days of the civil rights movement, and the mystery that surrounds his death. Bestselling author Peter Guralnick tells this moving and significant story, from Cooke's childhood as a choirboy to an adulthood when he was anything but. With appearances by Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, James Brown, Harry Belafonte, Aretha Franklin, Fidel Castro, The Beatles, Sonny and Cher, Bob Dylan, and other central figures of this explosive era, Dream Boogie is a compelling depiction of one man striving to achieve his vision despite all obstacles -- and an epic portrait of America during the turbulent and hopeful 1950s and 1960s. The triumph of the book is the vividness with which Peter Guralnick conveys the astonishing richness of the black America of this era -- the drama, force, and feeling of the story.
