Book Excerpt :

Gay high school sweethearts struggle to maintain their relationship when one of them relocates for a job in this witty, heartfelt debut. Some people spend their whole lives looking for the right partner. Nate Schaper found his in high school. In the eight months since their cautious flirting became a real, heart-pounding, tell-the-parents relationship, Nate and Adam have been inseparable. Even when local kids take their homophobia to brutal levels, Nate is undaunted. He and Adam are rock solid. Two parts of a whole. Yin and yang. But when Adam graduates and takes an off-Broadway job in New York—at Nate’s insistence—that certainty begins to flicker. Nate’s friends can’t keep his insecurities at bay, especially when he catches Skyped glimpses of Adam’s shirtless roommate. Nate starts a blog to vent his frustrations and becomes the center of a school controversy, drawing ire and support in equal amounts. But it’s the attention of a new boy who is looking for more than guidance that forces him to confront who and what he really wants. Tender, thoughtful, and unflinchingly real, Don’t Let Me Go is a witty and beautifully written account of young love, long-distance relationships, and learning to follow your heart. A Lambda Literary Awards finalist ALA Rainbow List (2013) “Don't Let Me Go is a charming story. Trumble’s love for the characters is evident on every page, and it’s contagious.” —Robin Reardon, author of A Secret Edge “Trumble’s debut is a deeply moving and in-depth look at the perils and anxieties of being gay in high school. . . . Told frankly and honestly from Nate’s point of view, the novel explores issues like coming out, parental acceptance (and its lack), antigay violence, and the attitudes of faculty and fellow students, whose ranks provide bo

Book Short Summary:

From the bestselling author of After the Crash, “a novel so extraordinary it reminded me of reading Stieg Larsson for the first time” (The Sunday Times). Holidaying in an idyllic resort on the island of Réunion, wealthy Parisians Martial and Liane Bellion are enjoying the perfect family moment with their six-year-old daughter. Turquoise skies, clear water, palm trees, a warm breeze. Then Liane Bellion disappears from her hotel room. The door to her room is open, the walls and sheets are spotted with blood. A hotel employee swears he saw Martial in the corridor at the time Liane went missing, and he becomes the number one suspect. But then Martial also disappears, along with his daughter. An all-out manhunt is declared across the island. Could Martial really have killed his wife? For fans of Gone Girl and The Fugitive, Bussi’s fast-paced, atmospheric thriller does not disappoint. “A nail biter of a manhunt across the spectacular terrain of the Indian Ocean island of Réunion drives this thriller after a tourist goes missing, triggering a police chase and exposing a cannily-constructed mystery with nods to both Agatha Christie and Harlan Coben.” —The Boston Globe “Suspenseful . . . vengeance proves a common passion on Réunion, as detailed in this twist-filled novel told from several characters’ perspectives.” —The Wall Street Journal “This novel, a multi-charactered French whodunit, squeezes all its frantic action into the 25 square miles of gorgeous but treacherous Réunion Island.” —Toronto Star “A top-notch puzzle . . . A wonderfully immersive thriller.” —Booklist

Book Short Summary:

T.D. Jakes, New York Times bestselling author of Reposition Yourself, Making Great Decisions, and more than a dozen other titles, presents this book on forgiveness, demonstrating once again why he is called “a spiritual genius,” a “master of meeting mankind eye to eye,” and one of America’s best preachers. Jakes understands that he and fellow Christians share spiritual truths “that transcend time and culture and reflect a universal understanding of human nature.” The spiritual truth he explores in Let It Go concerns forgiveness and why it is important for those on the receiving end of wrongful behavior as well as those who commit acts of wrongdoing. “Forgiveness is a big idea and it works best when it is invested into people who have the courage to grasp the seven-foot-high idea of what’s best for their future rather than the four-foot-high idea of recompense for what has happened in their past,” Jakes writes in Let It Go. This book explores forgiveness as an idea and at the same time offers specific and clear actions for readers who seek to apply the idea in their daily lives. Offenses are a part of life, he says. But conflicts can be resolved and relationships do have a future, if we learn how to forgive. No matter how great or small the injustice, Jakes shows how the matter can be put behind you for the sake of a better tomorrow if you can Let It Go.

Book Short Summary:

Penguin Classics e-books give you the best possible editions of Charles Dickens's novels, including all the original illustrations, useful and informative introductions, the definitive, accurate text as it was meant to be published, a chronology of Dickens's life and notes that fill in the background to the book. The work of a young novelist at the height of his powers, Nicholas Nickleby is one of the touchstones of the English comic novel. Around the central story of Nicholas Nickleby and the misfortunes of his family, Dickens created some of his most wonderful characters: the muddle-headed Mrs Nickleby, the gloriously theatrical Crummles, the slow-witted orphan Smike, the pretentious Mantalinis and the mindlessly cruel Squeers and his wife. The novel's loose, haphazard progress harks back to the picaresque novels of the 18th century, particularly those of Smollett and Fielding. Yet its exuberant atmosphere of romance, adventure and freedom is overshadowed by Dickens' awareness of social ills and financial and class insecurity.

Book Short Summary:

Oliver Twist, or the Parish Boy's Progress is the second novel of Charles Dickens. It was published from 1837 to 1839 as a series. Born in a workhouse, the orphan Oliver Twist is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. After escaping, Oliver travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin. Oliver Twist unromantically portrays the sordid lives of criminals, and exposes the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century. In an early example of the social novel, Dickens satirizes child labour, domestic violence, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of working as a child labourer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own experiences as a youth contributed as well. This edition contains original text from the one volume book printed in 1939. It features illustrations from George Cruikshank.

Book Short Summary:

This semi-autobiographical account of an early twentieth century activist recounts growing up in rural poverty in farming settlements and mining towns; discovering the double standards of race and sex among East Coast intellectuals; facing false espionage charges; and maintaining independence through two tormented marriages. Groundbreaking in its portrayal of sexism within the leftist movement, Daughter of Earth was uniquely prescient in its intersectional exploration of oppression, and endures as a necessary text for progressive social movements today.

Book Short Summary:

3 May. Bistritz. Left Munich at 8:35 P. M., on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late. Buda-Pesth seems a wonderful place, from the glimpse which I got of it from the train and the little I could walk through the streets. I feared to go very far from the station, as we had arrived late and would start as near the correct time as possible. The impression I had was that we were leaving the West and entering the East; the most western of splendid bridges over the Danube, which is here of noble width and depth, took us among the traditions of Turkish rule.

Book Short Summary:

The Plumed Serpent D. H. Lawrence - Lawrence wrote The Plumed Serpent between 1923 to 1924 a time when he was in ill health, living in Mexico and becoming dependent on his wife Frieda. The plot revolves around a movement to replace the Christian God with the old pre-conquest gods, such as Quetzalcoatl, the plumed serpent of the title. Kate Leslie, an Irish woman, gets caught up in the movement and marries one of the leaders but to the very end of the novel is ambivalent towards the aims of the movement. Lawrence uses the story to propound his own views about religion and the need for woman to sublimate herself before man and the need for a new political order. This all seems deliciously old-fashioned and misplaced now but we forgive Lawrence because of the beauty of his writing and his ability to get beneath the surface of the country he describes.

Book Short Summary:

Set in a rural countryside town in late Victorian England, this a story of love, relationships and attraction. A young woman Laetitia (Lettie), finds herself in a love triangle with two suitors, a young farmer named George Saxton and Leslie Temple, a son of a mine-owning family. Torn between her attraction to one and the prospects offered by the other, she makes a decision that will profoundly impact all characters in the years to come. The story is narrated by Cyril Beardsall, Lettie’s brother and a friend of one of her suitors. His observations provide readers with an insight into Victorian life, from women’s fashions, home décor and issues of the day, to the local landscapes and insights into English society leading up to the Second World War. This is D.H. Lawrence’s first novel and is often described as a biographical snapshot of his youth. It also foreshadows the brilliance he was known for in his later works. The story examines relationships between men and women and the expectations set upon them by society. For fans of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Richard Yates and Bernhard Schlink.
