Book Excerpt :

The poetry of Anthony Hecht has been praised by Harold Bloom and Ted Hughes, among others, for its sure control of difficult material and its unique music and visual precision. This new volume is the fruit of a mellowing maturity that carries with it a smoky bitterness, a flavor of ancient and experienced wisdom, as in this stanza from “Sarabande on Attaining the Age of Seventy-seven”: A turn, a glide, a quarter-turn and bow, The stately dance advances; these are airs Bone-deep and numbing as I should know by now, Diminishing the cast, like musical chairs. Hecht’s verse—by turns lyric and narrative, formal and free—is grounded in the compassion that comes from a deep understanding of every kind of human depredation, yet is tempered by flashes of wry comedy, and still more by innocent pleasure in the gifts of the natural world. Followers of his poetry will recognize an evolution of style in many of these poems—a quiet and understated voice, passing through darkness toward realms of delight.

Have you ever had something you felt you wanted to say but could never find the words yourself? Every passage in this book was taken from life’s events. Whether happy, sad, heartbreaking, or tragic, it’s written with the raw emotion that everyone feels in their real day to day lives. I have had my share of ups and downs myself. I have been to the darkest parts within me, but in the end, I was able to find the light. That is what I want these poems to do for my readers. Have you ever slipped into a dark time in your life? Ever thought that no one would ever be able to understand? Do you dream of happiness amongst that heartache? A truth amongst all the lies? Then let my words help take you out of your darkness and into your light.

Book Short Summary:

In this book Charles Hartshorne continues his contribution to the field with autobiographical reflections, showing the causal conditions which made his career possible. “There is some advantage in associating philosophical beliefs with specific life situations. The reader will find suggestions for a philosophy of life and of religion. The religion is not the orthodox Protestant Christianity which I grew up in, although it is closely related, but also includes Judaism, Buddhism, and some forms of Hinduism. It will in some ways be found close to the beliefs of C.S. Peirce and also those of A.N. Whitehead. Of the persons, famous or not famous, that I have known, I recall many things that seem worth making available to others, sometimes witty remarks, expressions of outstanding goodness, remarkable wisdom, or ludicrous foolishness. In such ways the book is a celebration of life in its variety, depths, and heights.” — Charles Hartshorne

Book Short Summary:

The International Bestseller On April 10, 2019, award-winning astrophysicist Heino Falcke presented the first image ever captured of a black hole at an international press conference—a turning point in astronomy that Science magazine called the scientific breakthrough of the year. That photo was captured with the unthinkable commitment of an intercontinental team of astronomers who transformed the world into a global telescope. While this image achieved Falcke’s goal in making a black hole “visible” for the first time, he recognizes that the photo itself asks more questions for humanity than it answers. Light in the Darkness takes us on Falcke’s extraordinary journey to the darkest corners of the universe. From the first humans looking up at the night sky to modern astrophysics, from the study of black holes to the still-unsolved mysteries of the universe, Falcke asks, in even the greatest triumphs of science, is there room for doubts, faith, and a God? A plea for curiosity and humility, Light in the Darkness sees one of the great minds shaping the world today as he ponders the big, pressing questions that present themselves when we look up at the stars.

A riveting new thriller from internationally bestselling author Daniel Kalla. After Brianna O’Brien takes her own life, Dr. David Spears blames himself. Though he understands suicides can be a tragic occurrence in psychiatric practice, this loss hits him particularly hard. With Brianna, he’s convinced he missed crucial warning signs. When David suspects Brianna’s friend, Amka Obed—whom he’s also been treating virtually—is in crisis, he flies to the remote Arctic community of Utqiagvik, Alaska, only to discover that she has disappeared. While the regional police are confident that Amka will turn up safe, David and the town’s social worker, Taylor Holmes, have serious doubts. Each battling their own demons, David and Taylor launch an investigation, determined to help uncover the truth about what happened to Amka. Taylor, who’s familiar with the locals, suspects a drug lord with connections to Amka’s boyfriend. Who is right? Where is Amka? Is she still alive? What begins as a missing persons inquiry and suspicion over a pharmaceutical cover-up quickly evolves into a terrifying journey of treachery and death—one that will horrify this isolated town and endanger many more lives.

Rosa and her mama go to school together-in the dark of night, silently, afraid that any noise they hear is a patroller on the lookout for escaped slaves. Their school is literally a hole in the ground, where they and other slaves of all ages gather to form letters out of sticks, scratch letters in the dirt, and pronounce their sounds in whispers. Young Rosa is eager to learn the letters and then the words, because after the words comes reading. But she must have patience, her mama reminds her, and keep her letters to herself when she's working on the plantation. If the Master catches them, it'll mean a whipping-one lash for each letter. No matter how slow and dangerous the process might be, Rosa is determined to learn, and pass on her learning to others.

Book Short Summary:

According to the Upanishads, the body is a temple and the one residing in it is the Lord Himself. Humans have endeavored to replicate this message through the construction of temples. The heart is the cave where the soul dwells and the cave is the temple’s sanctum sanctum where the deity resides—in darkness and stillness. In all faiths, light is the archetype of transcendence. In the temple, it is only with the light of the lamp, purposefully raised, that the magnificent presence of God is revealed. In us, God is discovered with the light of knowledge: when it floods the cave, it banishes the darkness, illuminating and making the unknown gloriously known. What is this light? What does it disclose? How is it attained? With gratitude and humility, ‘Darkness to Light’ provides answers and makes suggestions. This book is a humble offering of gratitude at the feet of the great master Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, founder of Chinmaya Mission, who has ignited the spark in the hearts of seekers worldwide.

She was born in the central part of Illinois. She grew up in a time that was much different than it is now. She never gave up hope and thought that her life had a purpose. She always felt that things would get better if only she believed they would. Book Short Summary:

Fourteen is this generation’s Holding the Man – a moving coming-of-age memoir about a young man’s search for identity and acceptance in the most unforgiving and hostile of places: high school. This is a story about my fourteenth year of life as a gay kid at an all-boys rugby-mad Catholic school in regional Queensland. It was a year in which I started to discover who I was, and deeply hated what was revealed. It was a year in which I had my first crush and first devastating heartbreak. It was a year of torment, bullying and betrayal – not just at the hands of my peers, but by adults who were meant to protect me. And it was a year that almost ended tragically. I found solace in writing and my budding journalism; in a close-knit group of friends, all growing up too quickly together; and in the fierce protection of family and a mother’s unconditional love. These were moments of light and hilarity that kept me going. As much as Fourteen is a chronicle of the enormous struggle and adversity I endured, and the shocking consequences of it all, it’s also a tale of survival. Because I did survive. ‘Teenagers should read this book, parents should read this book. Human beings, above all, should read this book.’ Rick Morton bestselling author of One Hundred Years of Dirt ‘I love this book … a beautifully written account of a young man struggling with his sexuality, overcoming shocking abuse and finding his way to pride.’ Peter FitzSimons, bestselling author ‘Shannon is unflinching in recounting the horror, but he is also funny, empathetic and, above all, full of courage.’ Bridie Jabour, author of The Way Things Should Be ‘A slice of life as experienced quite recently in the “lucky country”.’ The Hon Michael Kirby, AC CMG ‘Shannon's bitter struggle is painfully recognisable and happening in playgrounds around the world. But he not only triumphs, he relives his past using his best weapon: beautiful words.’ Australian Women’s Weekly ‘A stunning memoir about heartbreak and acceptance … a unique, hilarious and bittersweet insight into the heart of a boy, the courage of survival, and the fierce love of a mother.’ Frances Whiting, Courier Mail ‘Australia hasn’t changed all that much from what Shannon describes in Fourteen. Marriage equality isn’t the end; there is still such a long way to go, and books like this are an important part of that journey.’ FIVE STARS. Good Reading ‘Intensely raw and incredibly moving.’ OUTinPerth 'A book in which many will undoubtably see themselves and take solace' The Age

Book Short Summary:

They left in the middle of the night—often carrying little more than the knowledge to follow the North Star. Between 1830 and the end of the Civil War in 1865, an estimated one hundred thousand slaves became passengers on the Underground Railroad, a journey of untold hardship, in search of freedom. In Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad, Jeanine Michna-Bales presents a remarkable series of images following a route from the cotton plantations of central Louisiana, through the cypress swamps of Mississippi and the plains of Indiana, north to the Canadian border— a path of nearly fourteen hundred miles. The culmination of a ten-year research quest, Through Darkness to Light imagines a journey along the Underground Railroad as it might have appeared to any freedom seeker. Framing the powerful visual narrative is an introduction by Michna-Bales; a foreword by noted politician, pastor, and civil rights activist Andrew J. Young; and essays by Fergus M. Bordewich, Robert F. Darden, and Eric R. Jackson.

Book Short Summary:

The need for churches and other faith communities to reach out and care for those suffering with depression has never been greater. Depression is now recognized as one of our most serious public health concerns. Each year more than ten percent of American adults experience a major depressive episode, and more than twenty percent will experience at least one episode over their lifetime. Furthermore, we know that depression is the major risk factor for suicide, now the second leading cause of death in the 10 – 34 year old age group and the fourth leading cause of death among adults ages 35 – 54. We also know that depression is a significant risk factor for substance abuse, another of our most serious health concerns. While we might want to believe that our religious faith can protect us from depression and suicide, we know that’s not true. We have heard too many stories of religious leaders and members of deeply religious families who have suffered from depression and taken their own lives. We need to recognize that no group is exempt from this terrible illness. Depression is found among the young and old, the religious and nonreligious, and all ethnic and racial groups. In Depression - Out of the Darkness and Into the Light, Dan Hale, a psychologist and national leader in health ministries, draws on his own his own struggles with depression, his work as a psychotherapist, and his experiences as a father who lost a daughter to depression, to offer guidance for individuals and families impacted by depression and for congregations that recognize the importance of ministering to those suffering from this terrible illness.

It is also the story of a rat called Roscuro, who lives in the darkness and covets a world filled with light. And it is the story of Miggery Sow, a slow-witted serving girl who harbors a simple, impossible wish. These three characters are about to embark on a journey that will lead them down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and, ultimately, into each other's lives. What happens then? As Kate DiCamillo would say: Reader, it is your destiny to find out. With black-and-white illustrations and a refreshed cover by Timothy Basil Ering.

Book Short Summary:

In the middle of the night, Leda suddenly woke up. She was dreaming of cherries. Jerking reflexively, shifting uncomfortably to suck in the hard air, muscles spasm making her heart pound as she stares into the dark and tries to regulate her breathing - to be aware. the difference between sleep and reality. Cherries… and plums, right? Or cake filled with fruit? Pudding? How to make tonic wine? No… ah, not… the hat. She closed her eyes. The question of whether to use cherries or plums to decorate the ready-to-wear Olivia beret with a crown can be purchased as soon as this weekend, when Madame Elise pays the day's wages. Emotionally, she found the hat to be a safer and more appropriate subject for contemplation than she knew she had to consider—it was the dark room and its countless nooks and crannies that were even darker, and the disturbance. What disturbance could have happened, to the point of waking her from a much-needed and deep sleep. The night was mostly quiet, except for the ticking of the wall clock and the gentle breeze blowing in the attic windows, which brought the scent of the Thames tonight, instead of the usual vinegar and distillate scents. rate. Queen's weather, as they call this early summer period. Leda felt it on her cheek. Jubilee celebrations make the streets noisier in the evening, the crowds and bustle of entertainment, the most outlandish expats from all over the world, wearing a turban and jewelry that looked like he had just stepped down from an elephant's back.

Book Short Summary:

Twenty sixteen was a very strange and unusual year for me (and mainly the main focal year for this journal), and it was a bit scary. This experience got me thinking of writing some parts of it and doing it a little bit differently than my other stories and journals by combining the two and adding a few other things. It will have some snippets of my life experience from what I can recall and hash backmaybe going back farther than 2016 to tie it all togetherand give an update of my life now. Then I put in a journal for poems in between, which I will put in the beginning, middle, and some or most in the end of this short story journal / poem book. Enjoy, and I hope you are able to jot down your thoughts on this and that. It will help you if you yourself are also fighting the darkness to get back to the light.

Book Short Summary:

A deeply panoramic tour of the night, from its brightest spots to the darkest skies we have left. A starry night is one of nature's most magical wonders. Yet in our artificially lit world, three-quarters of Americans' eyes never switch to night vision and most of us no longer experience true darkness. In The End of Night, Paul Bogard restores our awareness of the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky and how it has influenced the human experience across everything from science to art. From Las Vegas' Luxor Beam -- the brightest single spot on this planet -- to nights so starlit the sky looks like snow, Bogard blends personal narrative, natural history, science, and history to shed light on the importance of darkness -- what we've lost, what we still have, and what we might regain -- and the simple ways we can reduce the brightness of our nights tonight.

Book Short Summary:

This sweeping history of popular religion in eighteenth-century New England examines the experiences of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. Drawing on an unprecedented quantity of letters, diaries, and testimonies, Douglas Winiarski recovers the pervasive and vigorous lay piety of the early eighteenth century. George Whitefield's preaching tour of 1740 called into question the fundamental assumptions of this thriving religious culture. Incited by Whitefield and fascinated by miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit--visions, bodily fits, and sudden conversions--countless New Englanders broke ranks with family, neighbors, and ministers who dismissed their religious experiences as delusive enthusiasm. These new converts, the progenitors of today's evangelical movement, bitterly assaulted the Congregational establishment. The 1740s and 1750s were the dark night of the New England soul, as men and women groped toward a restructured religious order. Conflict transformed inclusive parishes into exclusive networks of combative spiritual seekers. Then as now, evangelicalism emboldened ordinary people to question traditional authorities. Their challenge shattered whole communities.
