Book Short Summary:

When your base camp is overrun by zombies, whom do you save if you cannot save everyone? Is it permissible to sacrifice one survivor to an undead horde in order to save a greater number of the living? Do you have obligations to loved ones who have turned? These are some of the troubling ethical questions you might face in a zombie apocalypse. Bryan Hall uses situations like these to creatively introduce the foundational theories of moral philosophy. Covering major thinkers such as Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and John Stuart Mill, this is an introduction to Ethics like no other: a practical guidebook for surviving a zombie outbreak with your humanity intact. It shows you why moral reasoning matters as long as you still walk among the living. The book is written entirely from the perspective of someone struggling to survive in a world overrun by the undead. Each chapter begins with graphic art and a “field exercise” that uses a story from this world to illustrate an ethical problem. By considering moral controversies through the unfamiliar context of a zombie apocalypse, the morally irrelevant factors that get in the way of resolving these controversies are removed and you can better answer questions such as: · Do we have a moral obligation to help those less fortunate than ourselves? · Is it ever morally permissible to intentionally kill an innocent person? · Are non-rational but sentient beings morally considerable? Equipped with further reading sections and overviews of the theories that you would usually cover in an introductory Ethics course, this one-of-a-kind primer critically evaluates different procedures for moral action that you can use not only to survive but flourish in an undead world.

Book Short Summary:

When humankind faces what it perceives as a threat to its very existence, a macabre thing happens in art, literature, and culture: corpses begin to stand up and walk around. The dead walked in the fourteenth century, when the Black Death and other catastrophes roiled Europe. They walked in images from World War I, when a generation died horribly in the trenches. They walked in art inspired by the Holocaust and by the atomic attacks on Japan. Now, in the early twenty-first century, the dead walk in stories of the zombie apocalypse, some of the most ubiquitous narratives of post-9/11 Western culture. Zombies appear in popular movies and television shows, comics and graphic novels, fiction, games, art, and in material culture including pinball machines, zombie runs, and lottery tickets. The zombie apocalypse, Greg Garrett shows us, has become an archetypal narrative for the contemporary world, in part because zombies can stand in for any of a variety of global threats, from terrorism to Ebola, from economic uncertainty to ecological destruction. But this zombie narrative also brings us emotional and spiritual comfort. These apocalyptic stories, in which the world has been turned upside down and protagonists face the prospect of an imminent and grisly death, can also offer us wisdom about living in a community, present us with real-world ethical solutions, and invite us into conversation about the value and costs of survival. We may indeed be living with the living dead these days, but through the stories we consume and the games we play, we are paradoxically learning what it means to be fully alive.

GHOULISHLY CHARMING ILLUSTRATIONS BRING TO LIFE A HAUNTINGLY ENGROSSING STORY In the ongoing effort to warn an unprepared world of the rising danger from zombie attacks, one vulnerable group has been left out — small children. That's Not Your Mommy Anymore offers social workers, counselors, and educators a helpful new tool to communicate with hard-to-reach at-risk youth. This inviting and entertaining story helps early readers understand for themselves that a mom who has fresh brain casserole in the oven instead of her usual meatloaf is probably not their mommy anymore. This utterly twisted and incredibly funny take on the classic children’s book genre tells an entertaining story in rhyming text even as it teaches other telltale signs that mom has been bitten by a zombie! Rabid zombie fans will be highly entertained by this hilarious parody that adult readers are sure to love as much as the real children books they enjoyed as kids.

Book Short Summary:

New York Times bestseller; 6 starred reviews! At once provocative, terrifying, and darkly subversive, Dread Nation is Justina Ireland's stunning vision of an America both foreign and familiar—a country on the brink, at the explosive crossroads where race, humanity, and survival meet. Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It's a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations. But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems. "Abundant action, thoughtful worldbuilding, and a brave, smart, and skillfully drawn cast entertain as Ireland illustrates the ignorance and immorality of racial discrimination and examines the relationship between equality and freedom." (Publishers Weekly, "An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading List")

Detailed drawings of the internal organs of actual zombies provide an accurate anatomy of these horrifying creatures. Book Short Summary:

A look at the true nature of the zombie brain Even if you've never seen a zombie movie or television show, you could identify an undead ghoul if you saw one. With their endless wandering, lumbering gait, insatiable hunger, antisocial behavior, and apparently memory-less existence, zombies are the walking nightmares of our deepest fears. What do these characteristic behaviors reveal about the inner workings of the zombie mind? Could we diagnose zombism as a neurological condition by studying their behavior? In Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep?, neuroscientists and zombie enthusiasts Timothy Verstynen and Bradley Voytek apply their neuro-know-how to dissect the puzzle of what has happened to the zombie brain to make the undead act differently than their human prey. Combining tongue-in-cheek analysis with modern neuroscientific principles, Verstynen and Voytek show how zombism can be understood in terms of current knowledge regarding how the brain works. In each chapter, the authors draw on zombie popular culture and identify a characteristic zombie behavior that can be explained using neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and brain-behavior relationships. Through this exploration they shed light on fundamental neuroscientific questions such as: How does the brain function during sleeping and waking? What neural systems control movement? What is the nature of sensory perception? Walking an ingenious line between seriousness and satire, Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep? leverages the popularity of zombie culture in order to give readers a solid foundation in neuroscience.

A novel that uses calculus to help you survive a zombie apocalypse How can calculus help you survive the zombie apocalypse? Colin Adams, humor columnist for the Mathematical Intelligencer and one of today's most outlandish and entertaining popular math writers, demonstrates how in this zombie adventure novel. Zombies and Calculus is the account of Craig Williams, a math professor at a small liberal arts college in New England, who, in the middle of a calculus class, finds himself suddenly confronted by a late-arriving student whose hunger is not for knowledge. As the zombie virus spreads and civilization crumbles, Williams uses calculus to help his small band of survivors defeat the hordes of the undead. Along the way, readers learn how to avoid being eaten by taking advantage of the fact that zombies always point their tangent vector toward their target, and how to use exponential growth to determine the rate at which the virus is spreading. Williams also covers topics such as logistic growth, gravitational acceleration, predator-prey models, pursuit problems, the physics of combat, and more. With the aid of his story, you too can survive the zombie onslaught. Featuring easy-to-use appendixes that explain the book's mathematics in greater detail, Zombies and Calculus is suitable both for those who have only recently gotten the calculus bug, as well as for those whose disease has advanced to the multivariable stage.

Book Short Summary:

Most of us have thought about how we would handle various types of scenarios that could signal the end of the world. There are plenty of movies on the subject, psychological papers, and even survivalists that are part of reality TV shows. Perhaps you have had dreams about being one of the few left and what you would do in order to survive. It doesn’t matter If think that the chances of a zombie apocalypse are next to zero. There are plenty of other types of scenarios that can occur. There may be a meteor in space that creates serious damages her on Earth. Even though nuclear weapons seem to be more controlled than in the 80’s, that doesn’t mean the risk of nuclear war is off the table. What about the risks of natural disasters that are devastating in terms of the volume of damage that they can create? In recent years, the number of tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters have continued to increase. There can be many reasons for this including changes in overall climate. You can make yourself crazy though and lose sleep thinking about the what ifs. A better way to handle all of it is to prepare for the worst case scenario. Hopefully, you would never need to have such items put to use. Yet if you do, you will significantly increase your chances of survival. We live in a society where it seems so easy to get what you need that we take for granted how tough it would play out with a huge disaster. No more buying what you need online or walking into a grocery store for food. No more electricity when you flip a switch or running water when you turn on the faucet. While we can’t control the events that may one day unfold, we can control how we are prepared for them. With some basic items stored, you can have an upper hand on many other people that failed to get anything in place. Creating some types of allies that you would be able to depend on if you had a need during such time could make the difference between life and death. Weapons may play a large role in who is able to survive and who isn’t. Not only in terms of hunting for food, but also in self-protection. In the event of some form of aliens, mutations, or zombies, you need to be able to destroy them. The other issue is that other humans may try to come and take your food, shelter, and supplies if you don’t have weapons to keep them away. Your overall health and well-being are important at every stage of life. During an end of the world scene, you won’t be able to just walk into the doctor’s office or to get medications. Being fit mentally and physically can help you to be prepared for survival mode. You may be able to stay in your home, but what if you have to make shelter on the go? You need to have a plan A, plan B, variations for different scenarios, and the ability to adapt to what is going on around you. Depending on the situation, you may need to survive for only a few days but you may need to fully care for yourself and your family for months or even years before society is able to regroup. There is plenty to think about in order to be prepared for anything. The end of the world may never happen in your lifetime, but what if it does? Will you be among those that are prepared and can survive? Will you be able to keep your family safe and to help them thrive in spite of all of it? In future chapters, you will get a clear idea of what you need in order to achieve such a goal. Think of it like pieces of a puzzle. In order for the picture to look like it should, you need to have every single piece in place. Being prepared means you can stop worrying about it and you can focus on what is going on in your life that you can control.

From Victor Halperin’s White Zombie (1932) to George A. Romero’s landmark Night of the Living Dead (1968) and AMC’s hugely successful The Walking Dead (2010–), zombie mythology has become an integral part of popular culture. In a reversal of the typical pattern of adaptation, the zombie developed onscreen before appearing in short stories and comic books during the 20th century, and more recently as subjects of more traditional novels. This collection of new essays examines some of the most influential and inventive zombie literature, from the early stories to the most recent narratives, including some told from a zombie perspective.

Book Short Summary:

A Netflix Original series! The second book in the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling series, with over 7 million copies in print! "Terrifyingly fun! Delivers big thrills and even bigger laughs."--Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Diary of a Wimpy Kid The zombies are disappearing. This might seem like a good thing, since zombies eat your brains, but normal human kid Jack Sullivan is suspicious. He keeps hearing an eerie shrieking noise that seems to be almost summoning the zombies—but to where, and for what (probably) foul purpose? Jack, his three best friends (maybe the only people left on Earth), and their pet monster Rover need to get to the bottom of this. Along the way they encounter a lot more than they bargained for, including a giant Wormungulous, a pizza parlor monster hangout, an ancient evil who destroys worlds, and a stereo system that is totally the bomb. Can Jack figure out why the zombies are vanishing . . . before he and his friends are next? Told in a mixture of text and black-and-white illustration, this is the perfect series for any kid who's ever dreamed of starring in their own comic book or video game.

Book Short Summary:

Let the Communion Commence: Lighthearted Reflections on the Heart of God for Humanity is a humble effort by a long-time Christian public educator and traveler to use his somewhat unique style and experiences to communicate to his graduating students, and to anyone else who might “come along for the read,” the wonders of a life-consuming relationship with God. Much of the content is also inspired by reflections on the sacrament of Communion, and thus the book may be of interest to a broader audience than just to graduates embarking on the next stage of life. Part one of the book seeks to introduce the Christian faith to those who may be unfamiliar with the Gospel message—that the Author and Creator of the Universe seeks communion, or a personal relationship, with anyone willing to embrace the death, resurrection, and Lordship of Jesus Christ in order to receive salvation from the consequences of disobedience to God. Part two encourages lifelong enrollment in the class of learning to be like Jesus Christ in preparation for becoming citizens of, and for introducing others into, the Kingdom of God. Finally, part three of Let the Communion Commence reflects on the ultimate commencement—the beginning of never-ending life in the presence of our Creator. Class is about to begin. Please join me.

Book Short Summary:

A Netflix Original series! The third book in the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling series, with over 7 million copies in print! "Terrifyingly fun! Delivers big thrills and even bigger laughs."--Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Diary of a Wimpy Kid Jack’s friends make a startling discovery: they may not be the last kids on earth, after all. This is great news for everyone… except Jack. Once they’ve found other humans, his friends won’t stick around for long! Jack’s only hope for keeping things the way they are is to prove that everything here is perfect, life is crazy fun, and nothing else could be any better. After all, they live in a mind-clobberingly cool tree fort, speed through town playing real-life Mario Kart, have a crew of monster buddies, and battle zombies on the regular. That's as good as it gets! One problem: it’s hard convincing his friends that everything is great when they’re being hunted by a monstrous Nightmare King and an ancient evil who won’t rest until Earth has been devoured. Crud! Maybe life after the monster apocalypse is more complicated than Jack thought… Told in a mixture of text and black-and-white illustration, this is the perfect series for any kid who's ever dreamed of starring in their own comic book or video game.

Book Short Summary:

A naughty old woman. A girl locked away. Men desperate for money. The people caught in the crossfire of other people’s lives as they implode. The Desperate and the Damned contains 14 stories that look at both sides of crime. There are the criminals, desperate for money or revenge or driven by their own desires. There are the victims, who suffer at the hands of others. Some get revenge, some get justice and some elude suspicion from anyone willing to take action. Others are damned from the first word, the ones who never could catch a break no matter how hard they tried. Justice is both served and denied throughout these pages, much as it is in real life. Whether it’s a naughty grandma heading out to find a guy to bring home to satisfy her desires, a mother struggling with mental illness, a guy about to lose his job who doesn’t know how he’ll pay the bills, each character is living on the edge of their existence, forced to extreme measures to right wrongs or survive. The only question is will they? Contributors: Patricia Abbott, Chris Barili, Rusty Barnes, Tracy Falenwolfe, Paul J. Garth, Allan Guthrie, Shannon Lawrence, Christa M.
