Book Excerpt :

Plays Six includes some of the most acclaimed work of Edward Bond, one of Britain's greatest living contemporary dramatists, who is widely studied by schools and colleges. The collection includes a commentary by the author. The collection includes The War Plays and Choruses from After the Assasinations. In The War Plays (Red Black and Ignorant, The Tin Can People, Great Peace): "Bond particularises daunting themes and subjects, but examines them within the context of every day life. His platform is a trilogy of plays that deal with the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The first, - a quick, telling chronicle of a life destroyed before it ever got lived - puts forth Bond's notions of contemporary cultural corruption and conditioning. In play two the demoralised inheritors of a ravaged earth try to rationalise an existence predicated on death. The third play enlarges the issues by focussing on a post-apocalyptic Mother Courage for whom schizoid suffering becomes a survival technique." (Time Out). In Choruses From After The Assassinations, Bond forecasts questions fifty years into the future, in an age of escalating militarism. Edward Bond is "a great playwright - many, particularly in continental Europe, would say the greatest living English playwright" (Independent)

Book Short Summary:

The internationally acclaimed dramatist Edward Bond endures as one of the towering figures of contemporary British theatre. His plays are read at schools and university level. "Edward Bond is the most radical playwright to have emerged from the sixties" Lear - "Bond's greatest (and biggest) play ... It is even more topical now and will become more so as man's inhumanity gains subtle sophistication with the twenty-first century's approach" (The Times); The Sea - "It blends wild farce with tragedy and ends with a sliver of hope ... what makes the play fascinating is Bond's bleak poetry and social comedy" (Guardian); Narrow Road to the Deep North - "His best piece so far ... No one else could have written it" (The Times); Black Mass, written for performance at an anti-apartheid demonstration: "A Georg Grosz picture come to life ... the only possible kind of artistic imagery through which to speak of such evil" (Listener); Passion - a play for CND: "Mingles comedy and high anger with absolute sureness." (Guardian) Edward Bond is "one of our outstanding playwrights ... He is already an acknowledged classic" (Plays and Players)

Book Short Summary:

Described by Edward Bond as 'almost irresponsibly optimistic', Saved is a play set in London in the sixties and reflects a time of social change. Its subject is the cultural poverty and frustration of a generation of young people on the dole and living on council estates. The play was first staged privately in November 1965 at the Royal Court Theatre for members of the English Stage Society at a time when plays were still censored. With its scenes of violence, including the stoning of a baby in its pram, Saved became a notorious play and a cause célèbre. It has since had a profound influence on a whole new generation of writers who emerged in the 1990s. Commentary and notes by David Davis.

Book Short Summary:

Over 50 years after his first appearance on the theatre scene, Edward Bond remains a hugely significant figure in the history of modern British playwriting. His plays are the subject of much debate and frequent misinterpretation, with his extensive use of allegory and metaphor to comment on the state of society and humanity in general leading to many academics, theatre practitioners and students trying - and often failing - to make sense of his plays over the years. In this unique collection, David Tuaillon puts these pressing questions and mysteries to Edward Bond himself, provoking answers to some of his most elusive dramatic material, and covering an extraordinary range of plays and subjects with real clarity. With a particular focus on Bond's later plays, about which much less has been written, this book draws together very many questions and issues within a thematic structure, while observing chronology within that. Edward Bond: The Playwright Speaks is potentially the most comprehensive, precise and clear account of the playwright's work and time in the theatre to date, distilling years and schools of thought into one single volume. Published to mark the 50th anniversary of the first performance of Edward Bond's Saved at the Royal Court Theatre in 1965.

Book Short Summary:

Hydrogen bond (H-bond) effects are known: it makes sea water liquid, joins cellulose microfibrils in trees, shapes DNA into genes and polypeptide chains into wool, hair, muscles or enzymes. Its true nature is less known and we may still wonder why O-H...O bond energies range from less than 1 to more than 30 kcal/mol without apparent reason. This H-bond puzzle is re-examined here from its very beginning and presented as an inclusive compilation of experimental H-bond energies and geometries. New concepts emerge from this analysis: new classes of systematically strong H-bonds (CAHBs and RAHBs: charge- and resonance-assisted H-bonds); full H-bond classification in six classes (the six chemical leitmotifs); and assessment of the covalent nature of strong H-bonds. This leads to three distinct but inter-consistent models able to rationalize the H-bond and predict its strength, based on classical VB theory, matching of donor-acceptor acid-base parameters (PA or pKa), or shape of the H-bond proton-transfer pathway. Applications survey a number of systems where strong H-bonds play an important functional role, namely drug-receptor binding, enzymatic catalysis, ion-transport through cell membranes, crystal design and molecular mechanisms of functional materials.

In sooth, I know not why I am so sad;_It wearies me; you say it wearies you;_But how I caught it, found it, or came by it,_What stuff 'tis made of, whereof it is born,_I am to learn;_And such a want-wit sadness makes of me_That I have much ado to know myself._ SALARINO._Your mind is tossing on the ocean;_There where your argosies, with portly sailÑ_Like signiors and rich burghers on the flood,_Or as it were the pageants of the seaÑ_Do overpeer the petty traffickers,_That curtsy to them, do them reverence,_As they fly by them with their woven wings._ SALANIO._Believe me, sir, had I such venture forth,_The better part of my affections would_Be with my hopes abroad. I should be still_Plucking the grass to know where sits the wind,_Peering in maps for ports, and piers, and roads;_And every object that might make me fear_Misfortune to my ventures, out of doubt_Would make me sad._ SALARINO._My wind, cooling my broth_Would blow me to an ague, when I thought_What harm a wind too great might do at sea._I should not see the sandy hour-glass run_But I should think of shallows and of flats,_And see my wealthy Andrew dock'd in sand,_Vailing her high top lower than her ribs_To kiss her burial. Should I go to church_And see the holy edifice of stone,_And not bethink me straight of dangerous rocks,_Which, touching but my gentle vessel's side,_Would scatter all her spices on the stream,_Enrobe the roaring waters with my silks,_And, in a word, but even now worth this,_And now worth nothing? Shall I have the thought_To think on this, and shall I lack the thought_That such a thing bechanc'd would make me sad?_But tell not me; I know Antonio_Is sad to think upon his merchandise.

Adapting King Lear for the Stage

Book Short Summary:

Questioning whether the impulse to adapt Shakespeare has changed over time, Lynne Bradley argues for restoring a sense of historicity to the study of adaptation. Bradley compares Nahum Tate's History of King Lear (1681), adaptations by David Garrick in the mid-eighteenth century, and nineteenth-century Shakespeare burlesques to twentieth-century theatrical rewritings of King Lear, and suggests latter-day adaptations should be viewed as a unique genre that allows playwrights to express modern subject positions with regard to their literary heritage while also participating in broader debates about art and society. In identifying and relocating different adaptive gestures within this historical framework, Bradley explores the link between the critical and the creative in the history of Shakespearean adaptation. Focusing on works such as Gordon Bottomley's King Lear's Wife (1913), Edward Bond's Lear (1971), Howard Barker's Seven Lears (1989), and the Women's Theatre Group's Lear's Daughters (1987), Bradley theorizes that modern rewritings of Shakespeare constitute a new type of textual interaction based on a simultaneous double-gesture of collaboration and rejection. She suggests that this new interaction provides constituent groups, such as the feminist collective who wrote Lear's Daughters, a strategy to acknowledge their debt to Shakespeare while writing against the traditional and negative representations of femininity they see reflected in his plays.

Book Short Summary:

Hydrogen bonds are weak attractions, with a binding strength less than one-tenth that of a normal covalent bond. However, hydrogen bonds are of extraordinary importance; without them all wooden structures would collapse, cement would crumble, oceans would vaporize, and all living things would disintegrate into random dispersions of inert matter. Hydrogen Bonding in Biological Structures is informative and eminently usable. It is, in a sense, a Rosetta stone that unlocks a wealth of information from the language of crystallography and makes it accessible to all scientists. (From a book review of Kenneth M. Harmon, Science 1992)

Now fully revised and updated, this educational edition includes chapter summaries, comprehension questions, discussion points, classroom activities, a biographical profile of Golding, historical context relevant to the novel and an essay on Lord of the Flies by William Golding entitled 'Fable'. Book Short Summary:

Many of us are born into families where we become increasingly more bondaged as we grow. There are those forbidden things that we are prohibited from doing. There are our natural curiosities that are stifled. There are boundaries placed on activities and spaces. Our worlds become smaller and smaller for our best interests. Our worlds become fraught by the cannots rather than the can-dos. And before we know it, the adult fears of our parents and teachers become internalized by us so that we too become self-imprisoned by all manner of fears and constraints. We become fearful of adventure, travel, books, motorcycles, one another and much more. However, there remains a vestige within each of us of desiredesire to shed the bonds and break free to flight. This struggle plays out on many levels: the spiritual, psychological, material and relational. For me, it has been through an interplay of the internal and external that I am beginning to become unleashed to become the person whom I think God intended.

Book Short Summary:

`A recent SAGE Publication called Therapists in Court provides invaluable, step-by-step guidance to mental health practitioners in the UK. Even though different countries use different legal systems, many issues faced in the legal domain are based on the principle of protecting the rights of both parties and balancing often competing roles. Despite its base in the UK legal system, Therpists in Court provides essential advice on many of these issues for all mental health practitioners, regardless of their location' - New Therapist `[Therapists in Court] spells out very clearly the vastly different worlds of therapy and the courts. Detailed and careful preparation is advised although not offered by the courts to the uninitiated. There are many examples given of typical Initial Statements; Disclosure Documents; and several different Court Reports which may be requested under different circumstances. This is a user-friendly handbook that one can use to get an initial overview of the likely legal scenarios therapists may experience, and which can be used for more detailed study if and when the need arises. Tim Bond and Amanpreet Sandhu provide therapists with a useful reference in which the legal process as it may apply to themselves and/or their clients becomes more easily understood' - Eisteach 'This book fills an important gap in the literature and will I hope remain in print long term, with appropriate amendments and revisions. It should be read by any therapist whose client is or may be involved in court proceedings, civil or criminal, as witness, plaintiff or defendant: that is, by all therapists of any discipline. It will be essential reading for trainees. I wish it had been around when I was learning my job' - Dr Jean Harris - Hendriks, Honorary Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Traumatic Stress Clinic, London `Therapists in Court provides a clear and useful summary of what to do when faced with legal processes and will be extremely helpful both to counsellors called to provide evidence in court and to lawyers who wish to refer their clients for support during the legal process or afterwards ́ - Sarah J Head, Client Support Manager, Alexander Harris Solicitors `It is extraordinary that no such work already exists. I predict that Therapists in Court will become not just useful but indispensable to all practitioners, not least because of the accessible and jargon-free language in which the law is conveyed. Ultimately, clients will be the beneficiaries of a better informed profession ́ - Marcel Berlins, Barrister, Author of The Law Machine, Media Law Module Leader at City University London, and Guardian Legal Correspondant 'It often happens that lawyers get frustrated trying to find the answer to a point of law in their textbooks. Therapist need have no such worries! When trying to find out how the courts of law may affect them in their work, they will find it all here - in a comprehensive and very readable account of what is involved. Here is all you ever wanted to know about the courts but were afraid to ask!' - Sheriff Nigel Thomas CBE `So many therapy books contain too much padding with references to other published work that is already familiar. The reader has to work hard to 'extract the gold from the dross'. This title is not one of these. Your review read the whole book through in one sitting because of the clarity of the writing and logical sequence. I wanted to know what to do next. Bearing in mind that this is about legal matters, it may be described as 'un-putdownable' - Play for Life Therapists in Court is the first in a series of handbooks providing legal guidance for practitioners from all the talking therapies, including counselling, psychotherapy and psychology. For many practitioners, becoming involved in a court case is a frightening and disturbing experience. The tone of legal letters and the adversarial atmosphere of a courtroom is very different from their usual working environment. Book Short Summary:

This edition of The Two Gentlemen of Verona offers a complete consideration of all aspects of the text. It interprets the play less as a contribution to a Renaissance literary debate between love and friendship (the traditional academic view) than as a dramatization of competing kinds of love - a theatrical counterpart to Shakespeare's Sonnets. It analyzes the lyrical language with which these kinds of love are expressed, and explores the tension between lyricism and the violence of some of the play's events, notably the concluding attempted rape scene. It also provides further evidence that The Two Gentlemen is Shakespeare's earliest surviving play, and proposes a new actor for whom the principal comic role of Lance may have been designed. This is the only edition to offer a setting of the song 'Who is Silvia?', prepared by Guy Woolfenden from an Elizabethan source, and is therefore the only edition on the market to provide a complete text for performance.

Book Short Summary:

Since financial myths exploded in the 1980s, the perspective of time creates a unique opportunity to update and expand the analysis begun in Glenn Yago's 1991 book, Junk Bonds: How High Yield Securities Restructured Corporate America (Oxford University Press). At the time of its publication, Junk Bonds drew controversial responses from the Federal Reserve and government agencies. In retrospect, the evidence clearly casts favorable light on the role of high yield securities. The research presented here demonstrates how financial innovations enabled capital access for industrial restructuring, capital and labor productivity gains, and improved global competitiveness. Enough time has now passed to allow this dispassionate empirical analysis to shear away the hype and hysteria that surrounded the Wall Street scandals, Washington controversies, and media frenzy of the time. Beyond Junk Bonds provides a one-stop data, reference and case study presentation of the firms and securities in the contemporary high yield market and the financial innovations that spurred growth in the nineties and will continue to finance the future. The high yield market incubated successive waves of financial technologies that now proliferate beyond junk bonds to all the dimensions and dynamics of global debt and equity capital markets. It charts the recovery of the market in the 1990s, the recent wave of fallen angels, distressed credits and defaults, and suggests how the high yield market will be recreated in the global market of the 21st century. It explicates the linkages between the high yield market, and other credit and equity markets in managing a firm's capital structure to execute its business strategy. The weakening of the U. S. economy in 2001 and the huge shock to Wall Street from the terrorist attacks of September 11 witnessed a historic increase in the yield to maturity of high yield bonds. Despite the volatility in the flow of funds to high yield mutual funds and occasionally sharp increases in non-investment grade debt yields, the asset class has been one of the best performing fixed income investments of the past decades. In fact, high yield bonds offer an attractive risk-reward ratio competitive with more traditional asset classes. Anyone active in corporate finance, financial institutions and capital markets will find this book a must read for interpreting and understanding the recent history both of the high yield marketplace and its interaction with private equity, public equity, and fixed income markets.

Book Short Summary:

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin (Fachbereich Philosophie und Geisteswissenschaften Institut für Englische Philologie), course: Abschlussarbeit Englische Literaturwissenschaft, 78 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: When Sarah Kane, born in 1971 in Essex, England, committed suicide at the age of 28 in February 1999, she left five plays and the script for a ten minute screenplay. Kane had dedicated much of her short life to the understanding, exploration and (re)invention of drama. While still at school she started writing and acting, activities which she continued at university, where she further experimented with theatre and where she also took up directing. After leaving the University of Bristol with a First Class Honours Degree in drama studies, she enrolled at Birmingham University and crowned her education with a Master’s degree in playwriting. After several minor dramatic experiments, staged as student productions in unofficial venues, her first full-length play, Blasted, premièred at the Royal Court Theatre in London in January 1995. The play immediately became notorious for its depiction of all kinds of physical and verbal violence for which it was fiercely attacked by both public opinion and reviewers. The fact that the plays which followed contained many unspeakable scenes of sheer cruelty, earned her the reputation as the enfant terrible of contemporary British drama. During her brief career Sarah Kane created a body of work that brought her both success and notoriety. Her controversial theatre divided critics and audiences from the beginning. While some attacked her persistently, others recognised her as a new voice, and after she explored and discovered different linguistic and theatrical devices, critical approval followed.

Book Short Summary:

The building explosion during the years 1945-1960 will inevitably lead to increased demolition in the next decades since the lifetime distribution of structures no longer fulfills its functional social requirements in an acceptable way. In the building period mentioned there was a great increase in reinforced and prestressed concrete construction. Consequently there is now more and more concrete to be demolished. Increasingly severe demands will be made upon demolition technology, including the demand for human- and environment-friendly techniques. On the other hand, the possibility of disposing of debris by dumping is steadily diminishing, especially close to major cities and generally in countries with a high population density. At the same time in such countries and in such urban areas a shortage of aggregates for making concrete will develop as a result of restrictions on aggregate working because of its effect on the environment and because of the unavailability of aggregate deposits due to urban development. From the foregoing it follows that recycling and re-use of environment- and human-friendly demolished and fragmented building rubble should be considered. The translation of this general problem into terms of materials science is possible by forming clear ideas of adhesion and cohesion: the whole process of demolition, fragmentation, and recycling or re-use of concrete is to break the bonding forces between atoms and molecules and to form new bonds across the interfaces of various particles of either the same nature or a different nature.

Sorbent Deformation discusses the theoretical and experimental study of the deformation of solid bodies during their ad- or absorptive interaction with gases or vapours. The book is the first monograph which deals with the problem of ad- and absorbent non-inertness, compiled from a 15-year study by the author on swelling or deformed ad- and absorptive systems. The results from the study are of practical and scientific value to engineers and scientists in the areas of physical chemistry, chemical engineering and environmental control. They could also be of interest to those looking to solve problems in such areas as forecasting, technological processing and fuel drying stimulation. · Provides novel, practical information on the behaviour of the systems used in environment control · Presents the derivation of the equation describing single- and multicomponent adsorption and absorption in swelling / deformed systems · Identifies the results of direct measurements on ad-and absorbent deformations (charcoals, clay minerals, organic cation substituted clay minerals, etc.) with a new high sensitivity method
