Book Excerpt :

Part thriller, part friendship story, part real estate listing, this witty and inventive debut explores the nature of friendship and home. Sam and Asha. Asha and Sam. Their friendship is so long established, they take it for granted. Just as Asha takes for granted that Donnybrooke, the mansion that sits on the highest hill in Coreville, is the best house in town. But when Sam is accepted into snobbish Castleton Academy as an autistic “Miracle Boy,” he leaves Asha, who is also autistic, to navigate middle school alone. He also leaves her wondering if she can take anything for granted anymore. Because soon Sam is spending time with Prestyn, Asha’s nemesis, whose family owns Donnybrooke and, since a housewarming party gone wrong, has forbidden Asha to set foot inside. Who is Asha without Sam? And who will she be when it becomes clear that Prestyn’s interest in her friend isn’t so friendly? Told from the points of view of Asha, Sam, and Donnybrooke itself, this suspenseful and highly original debut explores issues of ableism and classism as it delves into the mysteries of what makes a person a friend and a house a home.

Book Short Summary:

The first part of the book gives practical aspects of performing seva in the USA, India and Guyana, South America. I give case histories from my own experience and how I navigated the turbulent waters to deliver what we set out to accomplish. I hope that our team’s work will motivate others to understand the difficulties and find solutions to fulfilling the goal of seva. At the end, we could not achieve anything without the help of dedicated team members many of whom gave up their vacations and willingly gave their money and energy to make a difference. The second part of the book examined 5 case studies of our work dealing with kidney and corneal transplants in Guyana, blood and bone marrow drives in the USA under the auspices of the Hindu Mandir Executive Committee, distance learning in the UK and the Global Energy Parliament, Kerala, India. The third part of the book gives cautionary lessons in managing seva projects across the world. The fourth part of the book gives theoretical aspects of seva, which include social networks in management of complex missionary projects, the use of social networking technology in the promotion and scaling up of complex global health initiatives, the growing phenomenon of “voluntourism” and Distance Learning. Our case histories represent a variety of situations across continents. Having initiated and carried these projects from scratch to fruition has given us an insight into the many issues others may face when they initiate their own projects. We experienced frustration at many points in the trajectory of our projects; however, we persevered and perhaps achieved modest success. We should confess that we thought of abandoning and giving up at multiple stages of our projects, however, we were reminded of the beneficiaries and continued against many odds and obstacles. Some of these could have been prevented but others were inevitable.

Book Short Summary:

Do fathers love their children more than the mothers do? Why or why not? Yusuph is Tanzania Congolese boy who born and grow in Tanzania with unaware of his mother's (Tecla) and father's (Joseph) love for him because of some complicated situation. As Yusuph grew up, he longed to live with his family but at the end he received bad news of Joseph's death. "I literally can't remember what was my dad looks like, or his voice, or anything about him but there are still some missing pieces of him deep down inside me that I brought into my countless dreams of him." Father will say they love their children just as much as their Mothers, but it looks different on the outside. He buried him in his mind, and transform almost every aspect of his live, he decided to pursue his new dream of not letting his children go through the life he went through. Yusuph and Samir were selected by the college to study abroad. Father tend to love their children in the way they perceive is the best but mother love their children in the way they can best perceive it. So, from children's perspective, the father's love may seem to be less than the mothers. Samir explore Yusuph's life situation to accomplish writing his own novel. "... He's committed to reading as many novels as he can, hoping that one day he'll find something to write about in his novel, but still, I wish I could tell my life story so he could write something..." THE BEGINNING OF NOVEL WITHIN A NOVEL. Later on Yusuph find out that, before Joseph death, he left special love message for him about his steps sister, Clementine who live in Drc Congo. It is very difficult for Yusuph to go meet his step sister because he want to spend most of his time with his girlfriend (Naomy) for his future family. As time goes by pain of loosing Joseph never leaves Yusuph. "The foot prints our loved ones leave on our souls are permanent. Never to be filled with another. Never forgotten. They live on in our memories and in our hearts." The importance of fatherhood extend beyond a provider. Keep that in mind. Yusuph couldn't deal with the future while he didn't clean all of his past memory. "Now we're all together and we can't shake hands... We can't kiss... Hugging each other is a test for us... Having sex is also a problem.... I don't think if we will get married... Bearing children is a dream..." Mother's love is mild while father's love is shape. They are different but neither is dispensable. Instead to go study abroad, he go to meet Clementine because she is the one who will restore all the love he had for Joseph without care if there a civil war. Yusuph's heart-beat, thump-thump -- His finger is taking up trigger-slack. He holds off as Justine (Rebel) continues to drag Clementine backward into the woods... So yeah, I think fathers love their children, but they way they express it can sometimes be misunderstood or undervalued.

Book Short Summary:

Jacqueline Saper, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, was born in Tehran to Iranian and British parents. At eighteen she witnessed the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times, including the Iran-Iraq War. In a deeply intimate and personal story, Saper recounts her privileged childhood in prerevolutionary Iran and how she gradually became aware of the paradoxes in her life and community--primarily the disparate religions and cultures. In 1979 under the Ayatollah regime, Iran became increasingly unfamiliar and hostile to Saper. Seemingly overnight she went from living a carefree life of wearing miniskirts and attending high school to listening to fanatic diatribes, forced to wear the hijab, and hiding in the basement as Iraqi bombs fell over the city. She eventually fled to the United States in 1987 with her husband and children after, in part, witnessing her six-year-old daughter's indoctrination into radical Islamic politics at school. At the heart of Saper's story is a harrowing and instructive tale of how extremist ideologies seized a Westernized, affluent country and transformed it into a fundamentalist Islamic society.

Book Short Summary:

The definitive saga, at once riveting and revelatory – studded with rare nuggets of information and fascinating anecdotes – that sparkingly brings out the life and times of an internationally acclaimed incredibly versatile singer. Asha Bhosle – a Guinness world record holder plus recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award – has held one and all spellbound for six decades now. Her voice, both fluid and flexible, has infused neo life into a variety of genres – from the melancholy melody to the rollicking rock-’n’-roll; from the soulful creation to the vibrant disco; from the romantic rhapsody to the rambunctious folk song; from the dainty ghazal to the boisterous qawwali; and from the pathos-filled rendition to the naughty-naugthy seductive number. The author – on the strength of his vast and varied exposure and experience – turns the focus on enthralling behind-the-scenes happenings that shaped the advance of this artiste with a remarkable range and a noteworthy body of work. ‘The world has no time for losers’ has remained Asha’s performing credo. This volume captures Asha Bhosle in her numberless shades. It is about how – in her silken rivalry with elder sister Lata Mangeshkar – she moved with panache from O. P. Nayyar to S. D. Burman to R. D. Burman. It is about how she served a galaxy of composers; about how, in the end, she reached the pinnacle all by herself. Against odds that would have driven any other woman into quitting. No quitter ever, Asha Bhosle, as the supernova supreme, just went on to underline the adage: ‘No power like woman power’. No more can you stay away from this marvel of a musical biography than you can stay away from the matchless musicality of Asha Bhosle. If she is one of a kind, so is this musical masterpiece capturing all the resonances and nuances going with her piquant persona. Here is a long-awaited career study shedding light on the twists and turns marking the starry-eyed world of Hindustani film music.

If you love anyone at all, this book is going to get you.” —USA Today A dazzling novel of two sisters and their emotional journey through love, loyalty, and heartbreak Two Chinese-American sisters—Miranda, the older, responsible one, always her younger sister’s protector; Lucia, the headstrong, unpredictable one, whose impulses are huge and, often, life changing. Lucia lives life on a grand scale, until, inevitably, she crashes to earth. Miranda leaves her own self-contained life in Switzerland to rescue her sister again—but only Lucia can decide whether she wants to be saved. The bonds of sisterly devotion stretch across oceans—but what does it take to break them? Book Short Summary:

In these uncertain, tumultuous times, our collective vulnerability has been heightened, and positivity has become a precious commodity. More than ever, people are looking for hope and inspiration, and a little magic. Twenty-Two for 22—a collection of 22 literary pieces for 2022—delivers. From India to Egypt and back, these meticulously crafted stories, poems, and travel vignettes bring together disparate lives as varied, colourful, and magical as the places that created them—a plantation, an archeological site in Peru, a post-earthquake neighbourhood in Portugal. Love and betrayal, fear and joy, forgiveness and blessing—each person and place is evocative of the whole of humanity: A poor sweeper woman makes a decision with a startling result. A homeless man in a car accident makes the ultimate gift to the other victim. A memory keeper must pay the price for his avarice. Desert ancients bow to the wisdom of a fourteen-year-old runaway. A room in a faraway land steps back into the pages of history. Such is the fusion of life. Twenty-Two for 22 will be of interest to readers—aged 18 years and older—looking for new writing about new cultures. People who value freedom of self over familial and (or) societal expectations may particularly find themselves reflected in these stories, poems, and travel vignettes.

Book Short Summary:

Corrosive, funny, and frightening--one of the year's most absorbing first novels "My general incompetence and laziness at work had been apparent for so long that I now think it was arrogant of Mr. Gupta to pick me as his money man. I am the type of person who does not make sure that a file includes all the pages it must have or that the pages are in the right order. I refuse to accept even properly placed blame, lying outright that somebody else misplaced the completed forms or spilled tea on them, even though I was the last one to sign them out, or had the soggy papers still on my desk." As an inspector for the Physical Education Department in the Delhi school system, Ram Karan supports his widowed daughter and eight-year-old granddaughter by collecting bribes for a small-time Congress Party boss. On the eve of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, one reckless act bares the lifetime of violence and sexual shame behind Ram's dingy public career and involves him in a farcical, but terrifying, political campaign that could cost him his life. An astonishing character study, a portrait of a family--and a country--tormented by the past, Akhil Sharma's An Obedient Father recalls Dostoyevsky's guilt-ridden anti-heroes in this fully formed debut novel.

Book Short Summary:

Asha Parekh was to the movies born. Ever since she was knee-high, she faced the camera as a child artiste, while performing simultaneously at dance fetes. An alumnus of Bombay’s The J. B. Petit Girls’ High School, she devoted after-school hours to learning classical dance from exacting gurus. Given a break as a leading lady by Filmalaya Studio’s Sashadhar Mukherjee, she debuted opposite Shammi Kapoor in the romantic entertainer Dil Deke Dekho. Instantaneously, the audience and the critics agreed: “A star is born.” Followed a concatenation of silver and golden jubilee hits, which established her as the quintessential Hit Girl. Possessed of all the requisites of the cinema of the 1960s and the ’70s – felicity at instinctive acting, intricate dance skills and the ability to invest conviction into the roles of zestful, glamour-exuding film heroines – she made an impact, too, with parts demanding gravitas. Apart from films in Hindi, she has also acted in films in Gujarati, Punjabi and a film in Kannada. The Mumbai film trade, to date, acknowledges her as one of the heroines with the highest number of successes. Her innumerable dance ballets on stage have earned her untold acclaim, at home and overseas. Among her other facets, she has been involved since decades in running a charitable hospital. She was Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (1998-2001) and has been associated with the Cine and TV Artistes’ Associations and other organisations dedicated to the welfare of film industry workers, technicians and actors. She turned producer and director with several top TRP-rated TV serials like ‘Kora Kagaz’ and ‘Palash ke Phool’ and programmes like ‘Baaje Paayal’. Currently she has chosen to retire from acting, but adds, “Never say never.” She lives by the famed Juhu shoreline in Mumbai.
