Book Short Summary:

This acclaimed memoir of Islamic faith, marriage, and motherhood in America is “a culturally rich and rewarding personal chronicle” (Kirkus). Threading My Prayer Rug is the captivating tale of a woman’s pursuit to define an American Muslim identity for herself. With warmth and wisdom, Sabeeha Rehman recounts a multifaceted journey: from Pakistan to the United States; from arranged marriage to lasting love match; from liberal to conservative to American Muslim; and from an immigrant who intends to return to her native country to an American citizen, business executive, grandmother, and tireless advocate for interfaith understanding. Beginning with a moving and disarmingly funny account of her arranged marriage, Sabeeha undercuts Muslim stereotypes and offers a refreshing view of American life. She also recounts her experience of doing interfaith work with Imam Feisal A. Rauf, the driving force behind the Muslim community center near Ground Zero, when the backlash began. In a new preface, she discusses American Islam in the time of Trump. Marriage and Modernity

  • Pdf File: marriage-and-modernity.pdf

Book Short Summary:

An innovative cultural history of the evolution of modern marriage practices in Bengal, Marriage and Modernity challenges the assumption that arranged marriage is an antiquated practice. Rochona Majumdar demonstrates that in the late colonial period Bengali marriage practices underwent changes that led to a valorization of the larger, intergenerational family as a revered, “ancient” social institution, with arranged marriage as the apotheosis of an “Indian” tradition. She meticulously documents the ways that these newly embraced “traditions”—the extended family and arranged marriage—entered into competition and conversation with other emerging forms of kinship such as the modern unit of the couple, with both models participating promiscuously in the new “marketplace” for marriages, where matrimonial advertisements in the print media and the payment of dowry played central roles. Majumdar argues that together the kinship structures newly asserted as distinctively Indian and the emergence of the marriage market constituted what was and still is modern about marriages in India. Majumdar examines three broad developments related to the modernity of arranged marriage: the growth of a marriage market, concomitant debates about consumption and vulgarity in the conduct of weddings, and the legal regulation of family property and marriages. Drawing on matrimonial advertisements, wedding invitations, poems, photographs, legal debates, and a vast periodical literature, she shows that the modernization of families does not necessarily imply a transition from extended kinship to nuclear family structures, or from matrimonial agreements negotiated between families to marriage contracts between individuals. Colonial Bengal tells a very different story.

Book Short Summary:

Listening to the sound practices of bands and musicians such as the Asian Dub Foundation or M.I.A., and spanning three decades of South Asian dance music production in the UK, Transcultural Sound Practices zooms in on the concrete sonic techniques and narrative strategies in South Asian dance music and investigates sound as part of a wider assemblage of cultural technologies, politics and practices. Carla J. Maier investigates how sounds from Hindi film music tunes or bhangra tracks have been sampled, cut, looped and manipulated, thus challenging and complicating the cultural politics of sonic production. Rather than conceiving of music as a representation of fixed cultures, this book engages in a study of music that disrupts the ways in which ethnicity has been written into sound and investigates how transcultural sound practices generate new ways of thinking about culture.

Book Short Summary:

A Contemporary Royal Romance with a dash of intrigue, a pinch of drama, and a whole lot of sexual tension. She needs a miracle... Her breath hitched in her throat, a tiny involuntary gasp as she met the unwavering stare of Roman. Lady Henrietta Snape is fiercely independent, incredibly intelligent, and 100% royally screwed. She never stopped loving Roman Tyrrell, despite him destroying her heart at the tender age of sixteen as he bolted from her bed telling her to stay away from him. But now that she’s alone, penniless, and utterly desperate, he’s the only one she can turn to. And he's offering all the answers to her prayers... And there she sat, beyond the medical grade doors, barely ten feet from him, yet unfathomably out of reach. Roman Tyrrell knows he's rich, handsome and utterly privileged; every woman wants him and every man wants to be him. But after making the biggest mistake in his life when he was barely a man, he’s unfulfilled, unsatisfied, and trapped in an engagement he was all but forced into. When Henrietta arrives at his office unexpectedly, Roman has a chance to finally be free of his shackles, marry the woman he loves, and live the life his young self had dreamed of, but the stakes are high and the risks great. If they get caught they’d not only be breaking the law but lying to the King himself. Roman's willing to risk everything for the love of his life, but will Henrietta be wiling to bend the rules just to inherit her share of her father’s fortune? Beating the System is the first book in Henrietta and Roman's story in The Royals of Avalone series. It is a steamy slow burn romance. It contains some language and plenty of sexual tension. Note, this is not a standalone book, but the first part of a trilogy. Beating the System is the fourth book in The Royals of Avalone series. It can be read before the first three books, but it is recommended to read Victoria and Cormac's story first, just to avoid spoilers.

Book Short Summary:

LIVING IN A MEDIA LANDSCAPE FILLED WITH NEW DEVELOPMENTS and rapidly evolving consumers, marketers have struggled to make sense of it all. Michael Kotick, a longtime senior marketing executive, helps you navigate the treacherous terrain in this essential guide for anyone concerned about building goodwill, boosting a brand, and making sales. Instead of overcomplicating modern marketing strategy with jargon, he explains how to use an intuitive, attraction-based framework to understand what successful marketers are doing, how theyre doing it, and where theyre headed next. He explores topics like pickup lines and why nice guys finish last, primarily using the psychology of attraction to uncover what people really want from brands today. He also shares case studies from some of the worlds best brands, including Chrysler, Burberry, and Sharpie. Go beyond Instagram envy, engagement rates, and the list of rules that marketers have created for themselves to get to the crux of the matter: being interesting and likable to Create Brand Attraction. This is not your average business book. Kotick begins by reminding us that marketers are people too, and our job is straightforward: We need to help people like our brands. From that insight, he lays out a refreshingly simple way to approach just about any new platform or marketing strategy challenge. Jason Burby, POSSIBLE, President, Americas In a refreshingly honest account of his own personal experience, Kotick succeeds at offering a how to framework without resorting to the same-old, same-old of other, far less readable, business books. Museums and Public Art?

Book Short Summary:

While many museums have ignored public art as a distinct arena of art production and display, others have – either grudgingly or enthusiastically – embraced it. Some institutions have partnered with public art agencies to expand the scope of special exhibitions; other museums have attempted to establish in-house public art programs. This is the first book to contextualize the collaborations between museums and public art through a range of essays marked by their coherence of topical focus, written by leading and emerging scholars and artists. Organized into three sections it represents a major contribution to the field of art history in general, and to those of public art and museum studies in particular. It includes essays by art historians, critics, curators, arts administrators and artists, all of whom help to finally codify the largely unwritten history of how museums and public art have and continue to intersect. Key questions are both addressed and offered as topics for further discussion: Who originates such public art initiatives, funds them, and most importantly, establishes the philosophy behind them? Is the efficacy of these initiatives evaluated in the same way as other museum exhibitions and programs? Can public art ever be a “permanent” feature in any museum? And finally, are the museum and public art ultimately at odds, or able to mutually benefit one another?

Book Short Summary:

After more than two years on the bestseller lists and over four million copies in print, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel of enormous contemporary relevance. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan’s last thirty years—from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding—that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives—the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness—are inextricable from the history playing out around them. Propelled by the same storytelling instinct that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once a remarkable chronicle of three decades of Afghan history and a deeply moving account of family and friendship. It is a striking, heart-wrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love—a stunning accomplishment.

Book Short Summary:

The historical upheavals in Southeast Europe since the early 20th century brought about deep transformations of people's everyday lives and their life courses. The concept of ‘life course’ enables the understanding of human lives within their socio-cultural and political contexts, stressing agency and people’s everyday experience. Balkan contexts invite for analyses that bridge political and social changes and their influence on individual life courses. The papers discuss problems such as family life and parenthood, ages and ageing, life-cycle rituals and the artistic expressions devoted to them. The authors present manifestations of the social differentiation and cultural multiplicity under post-socialist or post-colonial conditions – from developing contemporary global life styles among the emerging urban middle class to the ghettoization of some social or age groups. This volume focusses on developing family cultures, on experiencing socialization and age, on ‘old’ and ‘new’ life cycle rituals and their artistic representations in contemporary Southeast Europe.

Book Short Summary:

Between 1867 and 2000, the Canadian government sent over 150,000 Aboriginal children to residential schools across the country. Government officials and missionaries agreed that in order to “civilize and Christianize” Aboriginal children, it was necessary to separate them from their parents and their home communities. For children, life in these schools was lonely and alien. Discipline was harsh, and daily life was highly regimented. Aboriginal languages and cultures were denigrated and suppressed. Education and technical training too often gave way to the drudgery of doing the chores necessary to make the schools self-sustaining. Child neglect was institutionalized, and the lack of supervision created situations where students were prey to sexual and physical abusers. Legal action by the schools’ former students led to the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in 2008. The product of over six years of research, the Commission’s final report outlines the history and legacy of the schools, and charts a pathway towards reconciliation. Canada’s Residential Schools: The History, Part 1, Origins to 1939 places Canada’s residential school system in the historical context of European campaigns to colonize and convert Indigenous people throughout the world. In post-Confederation Canada, the government adopted what amounted to a policy of cultural genocide: suppressing spiritual practices, disrupting traditional economies, and imposing new forms of government. Residential schooling quickly became a central element in this policy. The destructive intent of the schools was compounded by chronic underfunding and ongoing conflict between the federal government and the church missionary societies that had been given responsibility for their day-to-day operation. A failure of leadership and resources meant that the schools failed to control the tuberculosis crisis that gripped the schools for much of this period. Alarmed by high death rates, Aboriginal parents often refused to send their children to the schools, leading the government adopt ever more coercive attendance regulations. While parents became subject to ever more punitive regulations, the government did little to regulate discipline, diet, fire safety, or sanitation at the schools. By the period’s end the government was presiding over a nation-wide series of firetraps that had no clear educational goals and were economically dependent on the unpaid labour of underfed and often sickly children.

Book Short Summary:

This book explores the contemporary phenomenon of forced marriage and 'honour' killings in Britain. Set against a background of increasing 'honour'-based violence within the country's South Asian and Muslim Diasporas, the book traces the development of the 'honour' question over the past two decades. It accordingly witnesses unprecedented changes in public awareness and government policy including ground-breaking 'honour'-specific legislation and the criminalisation of forced marriage. All of which makes Britain an important context for the study of this now indigenous and self-perpetuating social problem. In considering the scale of the challenge and its underlying causes, attention is paid to the intersections of gendered power structures that disadvantage female members of 'honour' cultures as well as feminist theories that seek to explain them. The book features five key case-studies of 'honour' killings and draws from a wide range of narratives including those of 'honour' violence survivors, grassroots service providers and legislators. Such myriad of perspectives reveals the complexity of the 'honour' issue and the deep ideological divisions that characterise it. With the UK's multiculturalist discourse unable to reconcile protecting patriarchal minority cultures with safeguarding gender equality and human rights, the book raises fundamental questions about the country's future direction. Following a long trend of state-sponsored integrationist policies, the government's response to the 'honour' question points decisively in the direction of a post-multicultural British nation.
