Book Short Summary:

Welcome to Beaver Village Pit in Alaska, where botanist Kenai Cranston searches for extinct plants within the frozen tundra of The Last Frontier. During his research Cranston discovers seeds from the Garden Of Eden's Tree Of Life. The tree's seeds are stolen and the fight for the fruit is the beginning of what could become World War III. The Lost Tree takes an intensely personal look at a wide range of human relationships and personality extremes. Characters run from outrageously callous to the extremely tender. The story chronicles senseless human greed mixed with the humor of trying to obtain excessive wealth. Great care is shown in closely tracking mankind's history, while suggesting possible earthly and heavenly mechanisms, which could have been used in generating that history. The Lost Tree Of Life is a fictional account of what may have been going on behind the scenes during some of mankind's most amazing history.

Book Short Summary:

Book Short Summary:

Focusing on Algernon Charles Swinburne's poems on Apollo, Yisrael Levin calls for a re-examination of the poet's place in Victorian studies in light of his contributions to nineteenth-century intellectual history. Swinburne's Apollonian poetry, Levin argues, shows the poet's active participation in late-Victorian debates about the nature and function of faith in an age of changing religious attitudes. Levin traces the shifts that took place in Swinburne's conception of Apollo over a period of four decades, from Swinburne's attempt to define Apollo as an alternative to the Judeo-Christian deity to Swinburne's formation of a theological system revolving around Apollo and finally to the ways in which Swinburne's view of Apollo led to his agnostic view of spirituality. Even though Swinburne had lost his faith and rejected institutional religion by his early twenties, he retained a distinct interest in spiritual issues and paid careful attention to developments in religious thought. Levin persuasively shows that Swinburne was not simply a poet provocateur who enjoyed controversy but failed to provide valid cultural commentary, but was rather a profound thinker whose insights into nineteenth-century spirituality are expressed throughout his Apollonian poetry.

Book Short Summary:

Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 7 include: . excerpts from John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress . speeches of Edmund Burke . the writings of Frances Hodgon Burnett . poems by Robert Burns . travel/adventure writings from Sir Richard F. Burton . poems of Lord Byron . the writings of Julius Caesar . speeches by John Caldwell Calhoun . poems of Callimachus . and much, much more.

Vitruvius Affluveum is a frustrated archaeologist who makes an incredible discovery near his exhausted excavation site at Nemrut Dag, Turkey, a discovery that captivates the world . . . In the skies above, the melody of heaven sang beneath the wings of the giant pterosaurs and was heard deep in the veins of the earth where rock flowed like liquid gold nursing the world and warming her skin. But archangels clashed, the Watchers came, and nephaliim were spawned. The earth groans in a travesty of darkness, death, and dread. Lost in the tide, One, God's precious, created man is lured away and abandons his one true hope. But the Throne has a plan . . .

Book Short Summary:

Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XV features two essential works of 17th-century religious literature: The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical tale of everyman Christian and his journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City of Zion, which parallels the spiritual odyssey of English preacher and writer JOHN BUNYAN (1628-1688). The Lives of Donne and Herbert, by English writer IZAAK WALTON (1593-1683), are short biographies of English preacher and metaphysical poet John Donne and Welsh priest and poet George Herbert, in which Walton highlights their virtuous characters.

Book Short Summary:

“An awe-inspiring, helter-skelter journey through mind-blowing SF, western dime novel, noir mystery, and near-future dystopian horror” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). The debut novel from Zack Parsons, editor of the Something Awful website and author of My Tank Is Fight!, is a mind-bending journey through time and genres. Beginning in 1874, with a blood-soaked western story of revenge, Liminal States follows a trio of characters through a 1950s noir detective story and twenty-first-century sci-fi horror. Their paths are tragically intertwined—and their choices have far-reaching consequences for the course of American history. It’s a remarkable mashup that “somehow manages to become a cohesive, thought-provoking whole . . . There’s no way a novel with this many moving parts should hold together, but it does, and even readers initially daunted by the jumble will soon be glad to go wherever Parsons takes them” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). “Parsons’s debut is a tour-de-force, a justifiably showy demonstration of the author’s chameleon-like ability to write in several genres all at once, and it emerges as one of the scariest and bleakest tales I can remember.” —Cory Doctorow

One group of men and women will rise to the challenge; to strive and conquer their own inner battles and those that rage around them in this allegory of paradise lost and found. The writer's great respect for the characters and the original story is always evident as he moves them into an apocalyptic setting. I read it in one sitting." -Al Taylor, Church of God Stewardship Director and author of Proving God.

Book Short Summary:

Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress : In Words of One Syllable Christian, an everyman character, is the protagonist of the allegory, which centres itself in his journey from his hometown, the "City of Destruction" ("this world"), to the "Celestial City" ("that which is to come": Heaven) atop Mt. Zion. Christian is weighed down by a great burden, the knowledge of his sin, which he believed came from his reading "the book in his hand" (the Bible). This burden, which would cause him to sink into Tophet (hell), is so unbearable that Christian must seek deliverance. He meets Evangelist as he is walking out in the fields, who directs him to the "Wicket Gate" for deliverance. Since Christian cannot see the "Wicket Gate" in the distance, Evangelist directs him to go to a "shining light," which Christian thinks he sees. Christian leaves his home, his wife, and children to save himself: he cannot persuade them to accompany him. Obstinate and Pliable go after Christian to bring him back, but Christian refuses. Obstinate returns disgusted, but Pliable is persuaded to go with Christian, hoping to take advantage of the paradise that Christian claims lies at the end of his journey. Pliable's journey with Christian is cut short when the two of them fall into the Slough of Despond. It is there that Pliable abandons Christian after getting himself out. After struggling to the other side of the bog, Christian is pulled out by Help, who has heard his cries.

Book Short Summary:

The Oxford Handbook of John Bunyan is the most extensive volume of original essays ever published on the seventeenth-century nonconformist preacher and writer, John Bunyan. Its thirty-eight chapters examine Bunyan's life and works, their religious and historical contexts, and the critical reception of his writings, in particular his allegorical narrative, The Pilgrim's Progress. Interdisciplinary and comprehensive, it provides unparalleled scope and expertise, ranging from literary theory to religious history and from theology to post-colonial criticism. The Handbook is structured in four sections. The first, 'Contexts', deals with the historical Bunyan in relation to various aspects of his life, background, and work as a nonconformist: from basic facts of biography to the nature of his church at Bedford, his theology, and the religious and political cultures of seventeenth-century Dissent. Part 2 considers Bunyan's literary output: from his earliest printed tracts to his posthumously published works. Offering discrete chapters on Bunyan's major works - Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666), The Pilgrim's Progress, Parts I and II (1678; 1684); The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680), and The Holy War (1682) - this section nevertheless covers Bunyan's oeuvre in its entirety: controversial and pastoral, narrative and poetic. Section 3, 'Directions in Criticism', engages with Bunyan in literary critical terms, focusing on his employment of form and language and on theoretical approaches to his writings: from psychoanalytic to post-secular criticism. Section 4, 'Journeys', tackles some of the ways in which Bunyan's works, and especially The Pilgrim's Progress, have travelled throughout the world since the late seventeenth century, assessing Bunyan's place within key literary periods and their distinctive developments: from the eighteenth-century novel to the writing of 'empire'.
