Book Short Summary:

Fachbuch aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Informatik - Angewandte Informatik, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In this book, we propose several modules of diagnosis for complex and dynamic systems. These modules are based on the three algorithms colony of ants, which are AntTreeStoch, Lumer & Faieta and Binary ant colony. These algorithms have been chosen for their simplicity and their vast field of application. However, these algorithms cannot be used under their basal form for the development of diagnostic modules since they have several limitations. We have also proposed several adaptations in order that these algorithms can be used in diagnostic modules. We have proposed a parallel version of the algorithm AntTreeStoch based on a reactive multi-agents system. This version allows minimizing the influence of initial sort on the outcome of classification. We have also introduced a new parameter called Sid, which allows several ants to connect to the same position, and we have modified the movements of ants by promoting the path of the ant the most similar. For the algorithm Lumer & Faieta, we have accelerated the speed of construction of classes by adding a speed setting different for each Ant. To reduce the number of movements, we have proposed a new variable that allows saving the identifiers of objects displaced by the same Ant. To improve the quality of classification, we have also added to the algorithm of the indices to report the classes trunks constructed. For the algorithm Binary ant colony, we have proposed a variant called "Hybrid wrapper/filter-based ACO-SVM". This algorithm allows the selection of parameters. It combines the techniques of filters and enveloping methods in taking advantage of the rapidity of the Fisher report and the adaptation of selected settings to the classifier SVM. It improves the quality of classification according to the data nature in the database for learning and the type of the kernel function used. It also allows adjusting the hyperparameters of the kernel function. We tested these algorithms based on data from two industrial systems, which are the sintering system and the pasteurization system, as well on a few databases of UCI (University of California, Irvine).

Book Short Summary:

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, , course: Ph.D Computer Science, language: English, abstract: Routing and Energy Efficiency is regarded as highly challenging area of Sensor networks. Significant advancements in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) opens doors for wide implementation in real-time applications like Industrial Monitoring, Smart Cities development, Underwater monitoring operations, tracking objects and many more. Energy Efficient routing is regarded as the most challenging task. Sensor networks mostly operate in complex and dynamic environments and routing becomes tedious task to maintain as the network size increases. Lots of routing protocols- Reactive, Proactive and Hybrid are proposed by researchers but every protocol faces some limitations in terms of energy, routing, packet delivery ratio and security. Therefore, to overcome all the routing issues, the trend has shifted to Biological based Algorithms like Swarm Intelligence based techniques. Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols have demonstrated exceptional results in terms of performance when applied to WSN routing. This thesis outlines routing protocols in sensor networks, highlight the concept of Swarm Intelligence and presents various Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols for sensor networks. In addition to this, we present Ant Colony based Energy Efficient routing protocol (IEEMARP = Improvised Energy Efficient Multipath Ant Based Routing Protocol) for sensor networks. The proposed protocol takes into consideration various performance metrics like Packet Delivery Ratio, Throughput, Energy Efficiency, Routing Overhead and End-to-End delay. Proposed protocol is simulated and tested using NS-2.35 simulator. Simulation based results stated that IEEMARP routing protocol is overall 16% more efficient in terms of Packet delivery ratio, Energy Efficiency, Throughput, Routing Overhead and End-to-End delay as compared to other ACO based routing protocols. In addition to this, IEEMARP is highly reliable protocol to ensure timely delivery with acknowledgement packet exchange between source node to sink node and vice versa and also combats the issue of congestion and packet dropping to large extent.

Book Short Summary:

An unprecedented look at the complex and beautiful world of underground ant architecture Walter Tschinkel has spent much of his career investigating the hidden subterranean realm of ant nests. This wonderfully illustrated book takes you inside an unseen world where thousands of ants build intricate homes in the soil beneath our feet. Tschinkel describes the ingenious methods he has devised to study ant nests, showing how he fills a nest with plaster, molten metal, or wax and painstakingly excavates the cast. He guides you through living ant nests chamber by chamber, revealing how nests are created and how colonies function. How does nest architecture vary across species? Do ants have "architectural plans"? How do nests affect our environment? As he delves into these and other questions, Tschinkel provides a one-of-a-kind natural history of the planet's most successful creatures and a compelling firsthand account of a life of scientific discovery. Offering a unique look at how simple methods can lead to pioneering science, Ant Architecture addresses the unsolved mysteries of underground ant nests while charting new directions for tomorrow’s research, and reflects on the role of beauty in nature and the joys of shoestring science.

Book Short Summary:

This book is concerned with two problems: how eusociality, in which one individual forgoes reproduction to enhance the reproduction of a nestmate, could evolve under natural selection, and why it is found only in some insects-termites, ants and some bees and wasps. Although eusociality is apparently confined to insects, it has evolved a number of times in a single order of insects, the Hymenoptera. W. Hamilton's hypothesis, that the unusual haplodiploid mechanism of sex determination in the Hymenoptera singled this order out, still seems to have great explanatory power in the study of social ants. We believe that the direction, indeed confinement, of social altruism to close kin is the mainspring of social life in an ant colony, and the alternative explanatory schemes of, for example, parental manipu lation, should rightly be seen to operate within a system based on the selective support of kin. To control the flow of resources within their colony all its members resort to manipulations of their nestmates: parental manipulation of offspring is only one facet of a complex web of manipul ation, exploitation and competition for resources within the colony. The political intrigues extend outside the bounds of the colony, to insects and plants which have mutualistic relations with ants. In eusociality some individuals (sterile workers) do not pass their genes to a new generation directly. Instead, they tend the offspring of a close relation (in the simplest case their mother).

Book Short Summary:

Ants have always fascinated the nature observer. Reports from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia indicate that ants interested humans long ago. Myrmecology as a science had its beginning in the last century with great naturalists like Andre, Darwin, Emery, Escherich, Fabre, Fields, Forel, Janet, Karawaiew, McCook, Mayr, Smith, Wasmann and Wheeler. They studied ants as an interesting biological phenomenon, with little thought of the possible beneficial or detrimental effects ants could have on human activities (see Wheeler 1910 as an example). When Europeans began colonizing the New World, serious ant problems occurred. The first reports of pest ants came from Spanish and Portuguese officials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Trinidad, The West Indies, Central America and South America. Leaf-cutting ants were blamed for making agricultural development almost impossible in many areas. These ants, Atta and Acromyrmex species, are undoubtedly the first ants identified as pests and may be considered to have initiated interest and research in applied myrmecology (Mariconi 1970).

Book Short Summary:

Intrepid international explorer, biologist, and photographer Mark W. Moffett, "the Indiana Jones of entomology," takes us around the globe on a strange and colorful journey in search of the hidden world of ants. In tales from Nigeria, Indonesia, the Amazon, Australia, California, and elsewhere, Moffett recounts his entomological exploits and provides fascinating details on how ants live and how they dominate their ecosystems through strikingly human behaviors, yet at a different scale and a faster tempo. Moffett’s spectacular close-up photographs shrink us down to size, so that we can observe ants in familiar roles; warriors, builders, big-game hunters, and slave owners. We find them creating marketplaces and assembly lines and dealing with issues we think of as uniquely human—including hygiene, recycling, and warfare. Adventures among Ants introduces some of the world’s most awe-inspiring species and offers a startling new perspective on the limits of our own perception. • Ants are world-class road builders, handling traffic problems on thoroughfares that dwarf our highway systems in their complexity • Ants with the largest societies often deploy complicated military tactics • Some ants have evolved from hunter-gatherers into farmers, domesticating other insects and growing crops for food

Book Short Summary:

A series of gruesome attacks have been sweeping New York City. A teacher in Harlem and two sanitation workers on Wall Street are found dead, their swollen bodies nearly dissolved from the inside out. The predator is a deadly supercolony of ants--an army of one trillion soldiers with razor-sharp claws that pierce skin like paper and stinging venom that liquefies its prey. The desperate mayor turns to the greatest ant expert in the world, Paul O'Keefe, a Pulitzer Prize–winning scientist in an Armani suit. But Paul is baffled by the ants. They are twice the size of any normal ant and have no recognizable DNA. They're vicious in the field yet docile in the hand. Paul calls on the one person he knows can help destroy the colony, his ex-wife Kendra Hart, a spirited entomologist studying fire ants in the New Mexico desert. Kendra is taken to a secret underground bunker in New York City, where she finds herself working side by side with her brilliant but arrogant ex-husband and a high-ranking military officer hell-bent on stopping the insects with a nuclear bomb. When the ants launch an all-out attack, Paul and Kendra hit the dangerous, panic-stricken streets of New York, searching for a coveted queen. It's a race to unlock the secrets of an indestructible new species, before the president nukes Manhattan. A.J. Colucci's debut novel is a terrifying mix of classic Michael Crichton and Stephen King. A thriller with the highest stakes and the most fascinating science, The Colony does for ants what Jaws did for sharks.
