Book Excerpt :

In 1975, Angola was tumbling into pandemonium; everyone who could was packing crates, desperate to abandon the beleaguered colony. With his trademark bravura, Ryszard Kapuscinski went the other way, begging his was from Lisbon and comfort to Luanda—once famed as Africa's Rio de Janeiro—and chaos.Angola, a slave colony later given over to mining and plantations, was a promised land for generations of poor Portuguese. It had belonged to Portugal since before there were English-speakers in North America. After the collapse of the fascist dictatorship in Portugal in 1974, Angola was brusquely cut loose, spurring the catastrophe of a still-ongoing civil war. Kapuscinski plunged right into the middle of the drama, driving past thousands of haphazardly placed check-points, where using the wrong shibboleth was a matter of life and death; recording his imporessions of the young soldiers—from Cuba, Angola, South Africa, Portugal—fighting a nebulous war with global repercussions; and examining the peculiar brutality of a country surprised and divided by its newfound freedom.Translated from the Polish by William R. Brand and Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand.

Book Short Summary:

Life boils down to two simple questions: What is my purpose, and what should I accomplish during my limited time on Earth? Anyone who has struggled with these questions can relate to Clifton L. West III, a Baptist church deacon who shares his story of an extraordinary life lived by an ordinary man. He writes about his faith and journey through life, offering a message of hope and encouragement for anyone who has struggled with challenges of their own. Of Life and Time focuses on the ingredients for a life well lived–– affirmation, love and righteous and loving instruction––even as it shares details about West, who attended school in Topeka, Kansas, just one year after the Supreme Court case Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka that led to school desegregation. Clifton, a runner, was national champion in the mile run in 1968, led the University of California track and field team, and almost made the 1972 Olympic team. Through his own personal struggles––with the help of his savior, Jesus Christ––Clifton comes to the realization that unconditional love and relationships with others provide the key to good living, even as he realizes his looming mortality. Of Life and Time delivers his timely message of personal testimony, a resounding message of unrelenting hope and unconditional joy for those willing to receive it.

Book Short Summary:

My Creative Mind came to me while driving around Wausau one day and wondering where it all came from, and where will it go, like great mysteries in life I shall never know. At that point I got off the road before I had an accident. I pulled in the parking lot of Pick N Save on Bridge St. and started writing. By that time I always had pen and paper with me. My memory isn’t that good. This poem also won an Editor’s Choice Award from Poetry.Com. Aunt Laura’s Wine Cellar also won Editor’s Choice from Poetry.com. I started writing this one about an upcoming family reunion and it just sort of became Aunt Laura’s. There really was an Aunt Laura and yes she really did have a wine cellar. This is one of those things that became a part of our family’s history. I shared it at the reunion and it brought back a lot of great memories. It also seems I wasn’t the only one to find an excuse to go downstairs to “get something” for Aunt Laura. Of course she knew what we were up to but we think she was flattered by the attention too. Then there was cousin Karen who said “hey wait a minute guys, I was never in Aunt Laura’s wine cellar, where was it?” Well sorry Karen. It seems you were the only one never in it. Geeze that’s really too bad. Aunt Laura has been passed on for some time now but oh what memories she left us with. Thank you Aunt Laura. I was getting to know more about Ginger Hartman and realized how much she had endured in life and yet survived. My first poem was basically a response to her poems and life and to prove that “hey. I can write one too.” Well I did and haven’t stopped. Perhaps I never will. The first poem was entitled How the Hell Did You Do It? It’s a bit of an unusual name but the words bare out an explanation. I wrote a few more about her, about her and me, about myself and then about many other people, places and things. Without her poems I never would have tried to write even one. I owe my creative endeavors to Ginger and shall be forever grateful for her inspiration, support and encouragement. You never know what life will send your way but when it does just grab on with both hands and let life happen.

Woven with love and craftily written, the author gives insight within the pages of SO HELP ME GOD, glimpses and glimmers of life. Book Short Summary:

All Dane Gale ever wanted was to be a successful writer. After a few sessions with his new friends Rose and Sherry at a romance book club, well, the more romances they read, the more they’re convinced they can do better. And do they ever! They join their creative forces to become “Pamela Clarice,” self-published romance novelist. When they look for a cover model for their first book, Dane sees the photos that will change his life. Paul Musegetes is the world’s most popular romance cover model, and the most secretive. Dane soon finds himself obsessed with this supernaturally handsome man, and when he meets Paul at the Romance Writers’ Ball on the Summer Solstice, he and Paul connect for one night of passion… After that night, Dane's a writing machine. He can’t stop writing romances, and every story he touches turns to gold. But he also finds that he can’t write anything but romances. And soon he's spending every waking moment of every day writing another after another... Then Dane finds out that this Midas touch has a heavy price. When the year is over, he’ll never write again. Not a romance, not a serious novel. Nothing. Not even a grocery list. And that leaves him with only one option – find Paul, and get him to break the curse. But before he can do that, he’ll have to track down Paul’s equally mysterious photographer, Jackson da Vinci… EXCERPT: I stopped crying around my third drink. Rose and Sherry patted me on the shoulder, and we’d reshuffled the chairs so that my back was to the rest of the bar and nobody could see me blubber. “What am I going to do?” I cried. “I’m going to be…nothing. All my life, all I ever wanted to do was write. And then this happened, and I was writing! And I loved it…love it. But the whole idea was that I’d do this till I got rich, and then, I’d write more books like ‘The Doldrums,’ and if they didn’t sell, well, so what?” I finished off my concoction as Rose signaled for another round. “Maybe,” Sherry said, a little wobbly herself after two glasses of wine, “he’s been around forever. Paul.” “What do you mean?” Rose asked. “Maybe he’s been doing this throughout the ages,” Sherry mused. “For all we know, he’s been crowning the Queen of Romance Novels for eternity.” Rose’s eyebrows went up. “You mean, like, he schtupped Barbara Cartland?” This made me laugh at the worst moment, and I choked on my drink. But Sherry took her seriously. “Sure, or even Jane Austen, for all we know. Maybe she got some after all. And where else did all these ladies keep coming up with tall dark and handsome, huh?” “But that implies he’s immortal or supernatural or…” I tailed off. “We should find his old pics, and run them through some kind of facial recognition software. Compare them to the recent ones, see if he’s aged…” Rose shook her head. “No, he doesn’t look a day older, but he hasn’t been around that many years. And look at Elijah Wood! Ever since ‘Lord of the Rings,’ he hasn’t aged a day.” “Maybe he’s not human either,” Sherry speculated.

Book Short Summary:

Infinity is paradoxical in many ways. Some paradoxes involve deterministic supertasks, such as Thomson's Lamp, where a switch is toggled an infinite number of times over a finite period of time, or the Grim Reaper, where it seems that infinitely many reapers can produce a result without doing anything. Others involve infinite lotteries. If you get two tickets from an infinite fair lottery where tickets are numbered from 1, no matter what number you saw on the first ticket, it is almost certain that the other ticket has a bigger number on it. And others center on paradoxical results in decision theory, such as the surprising observation that if you perform a sequence of fair coin flips that goes infinitely far back into the past but only finitely into the future, you can leverage information about past coin flips to predict future ones with only finitely many mistakes. Alexander R. Pruss examines this seemingly large family of paradoxes in Infinity, Causation and Paradox. He establishes that these paradoxes and numerous others all have a common structure: their most natural embodiment involves an infinite number of items causally impinging on a single output. These paradoxes, he argues, can all be resolved by embracing 'causal finitism', the view that it is impossible for a single output to have an infinite causal history. Throughout the book, Pruss exposits such paradoxes, defends causal finitism at length, and considers connections with the philosophy of physics (where causal finitism favors but does not require discretist theories of space and time) and the philosophy of religion (with a cosmological argument for a first cause).

Book Short Summary:

In the global context of the Cold War, the relationship between liberation movements and Eastern European states obviously changed and transformed. Similarly, forms of (material) aid and (ideological) encouragement underwent changes over time. The articles assembled in this volume argue that the traditional Cold War geography of bi-polar competition with the United States is not sufficient to fully grasp these transformations. The question of which side of the ideological divide was more successful (or lucky) in impacting actors and societies in the global south is still relevant, yet the Cold War perspective falls short in unfolding the complex geographies of connections and the multipolarity of actions and transactions that exists until today. Acknowledging the complexities of liberation movements in globalization processes, the papers thus argue that activities need to be understood in their local context, including personal agendas and internal conflicts, rather than relying primarily on the traditional frame of Cold War competition. They point to the agency of individual activists in both "Africa" and "Eastern Europe" and the lessons, practices and languages that were derived from their often contradictory encounters. In Southern African Liberation Movements, authors from South Africa, Portugal, Austria and Germany ask: What role did actors in both Southern Africa and Eastern Europe play? What can we learn by looking at biographies in a time of increasing racial and international conflict? And which "creative solutions" need to be found, to combine efforts of actors from various ideological camps? Building on archival sources from various regions in different languages, case studies presented in the edition try to encounter the lack of a coherent state of the art. They aim at combining the sometimes scarce sources with qualitative interviews to give answers to the many open questions regarding Southern African liberation movements and their connections to the "East".

Book Short Summary:

Michael Abramson is a collector of words and thoughts and unique objects of art and old stained glass. As a detailed stained glass window reveals a myriad of changing colors and images of light, so changes the meaning of this authors thoughts and words whether serious or humorous. He is a simple person; a physician, and a teacher, who has spent most of his life showing compassion for others. He has a deep respect for women and knows as much as anyone could about them, (often reflected in his poetry), yet he is the first to admit that no one will ever completely discover what drives such beautiful and complex beings. His views are indeed his poetic reflections as seen through some sort of colored but very wonderful light. He is a raconteur, a person of integrity and a portrait of an artist perhaps, (perhaps not), but for sure a portrait of a kind unassuming and humble man, willing to share his humor, knowledge and love with others. This volume contains more spitting images by author Michael Abramson, which are exhibited masterfully through his quotations, poetry, and free associated rambles in this much larger fifth volume of his work containing well over 850 pieces, including some of his best words from the other volumes. They will make you think, make you laugh, and maybe even make you cry. It contains stories, thoughts; humor, truths and sometimes just words which if read carefully might give you insight into the life and the mind of this clever and sensitive author.

Book Short Summary:

With In the Skin of the City, António Tomás traces the history and transformation of Luanda, Angola, the nation’s capital as well as one of the oldest settlements founded by the European colonial powers in the Southern Hemisphere. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research alongside his own experiences growing up in Luanda, Tomás shows how the city’s physical and social boundaries—its skin—constitute porous and shifting interfaces between center and margins, settler and Native, enslaver and enslaved, formal and informal, and the powerful and the powerless. He focuses on Luanda’s “asphalt frontier”—the (colonial) line between the planned urban center and the ad hoc shantytowns that surround it—and the ways squatters are central to Luanda’s historical urban process. In their relationship with the state and their struggle to gain rights to the city, squatters embody the process of negotiating Luanda’s divisions and the sociopolitical forces that shape them. By illustrating how Luanda emerges out of the continual redefinition of its skin, Tomás offers new ways to understand the logic of urbanization in cities across the global South.

Book Short Summary:

Pamila Gupta takes a unique approach to examining decolonization processes across Lusophone India and Southern Africa, focusing on Goa, Mozambique, Angola and South Africa, weaving together case studies using five interconnected themes. Gupta considers decolonization through the twined lenses of history and ethnography, accessed through written, oral, visual and eyewitness accounts of how people experienced the transfer of state power. She looks at the materiality of decolonization as a movement of peoples across vast oceanic spaces, demonstrating how it was a process of dispossession for both the Portuguese formerly in power and ordinary colonial citizens and subjects. She then discusses the production of race and class anxieties during decolonization, which took on a variety of forms but were often articulated through material objects. The book aims to move beyond linear histories of colonial independence by connecting its various regions using the theme of decolonization, offering a productive and new approach to writing post-national histories and ethnographies. Finally, Gupta demonstrates the value of using different source materials to access narratives of decolonization, analyzing the work of Mozambican photographer Ricardo Rangel, and including lyrical prose and ethnographical observations. Portuguese Decolonization in the Indian Ocean World provides a nuanced understanding of Lusophone decolonization, revealing the perspectives of people who experienced it. This book will be highly valuable for historians of the Indian Ocean world and decolonization, but also those interested in ethnography, diaspora studies and material culture.

Book Short Summary:

Scholars have made urban mothers living in poverty a focus of their research for decades. These women’s lives can be difficult as they go about searching for housing and decent jobs and struggling to care for their children while surviving on welfare or working at low-wage service jobs and sometimes facing physical or mental health problems. But until now little attention has been paid to an important force in these women’s lives: religion. Based on in-depth interviews with women and pastors, Susan Crawford Sullivan presents poor mothers’ often overlooked views. Recruited from a variety of social service programs, most of the women do not attend religious services, due to logistical challenges or because they feel stigmatized and unwanted at church. Yet, she discovers, religious faith often plays a strong role in their lives as they contend with and try to make sense of the challenges they face. Supportive religious congregations prove important for women who are involved, she finds, but understanding everyday religion entails exploring beyond formal religious organizations. Offering a sophisticated analysis of how faith both motivates and at times constrains poor mothers’ actions, Living Faith reveals the ways it serves as a lens through which many view and interpret their worlds.

Book Short Summary:

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how. Friedrich Nietzsche A great tragedy of modern-day life is the fact that we seek a how to live before we have a why to live and we teach our children how to live without helping them first discover a why to live for, not knowing that when they and we have a why, the how will take care of itself. This book is my attempt to help people, especially the young, to discover the why of their existence. Arming people with the answer to this question is the most effective way I know to help stop the senseless violence that takes place in our society all too often. At the same time, I want to address the argument that life is so hard for our young black men that is why they sell drugs and commit other crimes as it is the only means they have to feed themselves and their families. As bad as things are for many of our inner-city youth, I dont believe they need less challenges but more, for the simple reason that it is obvious that the ones they currently face are not succeeding in drawing the best and champions out of them. And this is ultimately what every challenge should do no matter how tough it is or poor you are. Kids are not selling drugs on the corner because life is hard for them; they are doing so because that is the easiest thing for them to do versus going out and working a steady job eight hours a day. So dont tell me how unfortunate kids are today to have so many challenges. When I was growing up, I was told that when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. What has taken the place of this saying in this generation is the belief that desperate times call for desperate measures. Desperate measures are not always the wisest choice of actions. What the youth today is doing to survive is desperate, but it is not truly necessary; in most cases, it is just convenient. Danny has been certified by Toastmasters International as a competent public speaker (1991 East Moline). He received his GED from the Chicago City Colleges (1981) and obtained a certificate in graphic arts from Southeastern Illinois College (1987). He is a former member of the Pan-African Revolutionary Socialist Party. He spent twenty years in prison and ten in the Elgin Mental Health Center. While in the hospital, he wrote over eight hundred poems, three books of daily meditations, and numerous speeches and Afrocentric anecdotes. He also acted as a mentor for younger consumers while there, leading his own peer-support groups and chairing GROW for four years (200307). He has been clean of all illegal drugs for fourteen years. Since getting out of the hospital in 2013, he has written seven books: A Ten Part Book to Maximizing Your Potential; Life Poems; Three-Part Process to Breaking the Recidivism Cycle; Young, Gifted and Black; Redeeming the Time; Let Them Eat Cake; and The 50 Most Positive Things I Know About African Americans. Dannys mission is to provide others who have struggled with addictions and mental illnesses and a history of going back and forth to prison with a better image of what they can be with the use of faith and a meaningful life purpose as a guide.
