Book Excerpt :

A New York Times bestseller and a "Best Thriller of the Year" Winner of the Goncourt Prize and now an international phenomenon, this dizzying, whip-smart novel blends crime, fantasy, sci-fi, and thriller as it plumbs the mysteries surrounding a Paris-New York flight. Who would we be if we had made different choices? Told that secret, left that relationship, written that book? We all wonder—the passengers of Air France 006 will find out. In their own way, they were all living double lives when they boarded the plane: Blake, a respectable family man who works as a contract killer. Slimboy, a Nigerian pop star who uses his womanizing image to hide that he’s gay. Joanna, a Black American lawyer pressured to play the good old boys’ game to succeed with her Big Pharma client. Victor Miesel, a critically acclaimed yet largely obscure writer suddenly on the precipice of global fame. About to start their descent to JFK, they hit a shockingly violent patch of turbulence, emerging on the other side to a reality both perfectly familiar and utterly strange. As it charts the fallout of this logic-defying event, The Anomaly takes us on a journey from Lagos and Mumbai to the White House and a top-secret hangar. In Hervé Le Tellier’s most ambitious work yet, high literature follows the lead of a bingeable Netflix series, drawing on the best of genre fiction from “chick lit” to mystery, while also playfully critiquing their hallmarks. An ingenious, timely variation on the doppelgänger theme, it taps into the parts of ourselves that elude us most.

Book Short Summary:

This book presents a systematic and coherent approach to phase transitions and critical phenomena, namely the coherent-anomaly method (CAM theory) based on cluster mean-field approximations. The first part gives a brief review of the CAM theory and the second part a collection of reprints covering the CAM basic calculations, the Blume–Emery–Griffiths model, the extended Baxter model, the quantum Heisenberg model, zero-temperature phase transitions, the KT-transition, spin glasses, the self-avoiding walk, contact processes, branching processes, the gas–liquid transition and even non-equilibrium phase transitions. Book Short Summary:

The theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is particle physics in a nutshell. It is an interesting, exciting and difficult subject, and this book provides a comprehensive review of it. The theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is at the cutting edge of current research in particle physics, and any deviation between the theoretical prediction and the experimental value might be interpreted as a signal of an as-yet-unknown new physics.

Book Short Summary:

"The Zacks Handbook of Investment Anomalies will be the definitive work that presents and updates academic and practitioner research on market inefficiencies that can be translated into effective investment strategies. Edited by Len Zacks, a CEO of ZacksInvestment Research, the book will explore earnings revisions and surprises; trading by company insiders; stock price momentum patterns; low price-earnings ratios; sector characteristics; seasonal patterns and other areas or market inefficiencies. The goal will be to present historical research on definable situations where particular stocks outperform the overall market. The insights from the research can then be utilized to construct a market-beating strategy going forward. While many of the chapters will be written by academics, an effort will be made to make the articles engaging and interesting to investment practitioners. The initial table of contents might be something like: Theoretical Framework within which to discuss market inefficiencies -- EPS Surprises- trading around EPS announcement dates -- Estimate Revisions - the oldest anomaly -- Insider Trading - it works if you clean the data -- Balance Sheet Accruals - longer term profits -- Price Momentum - 50 ways to measure it , do any work ? --Low PE - when , why, and does it work -- Best Anomalies in each Sector - what works in each Sector -- Academically sound Technical Analysis - it's a new world -- Calendar based anomalies - do they exist ,can you make money using them -- Anomalies in NonUS Markets ( 1 to 10 outside the US ) -- Selecting Mutual Funds -can you predict manager performance -- High Frequency trading anomalies - got a second?"--

Creating Future People

  • Total of Pages : 110
  • Category : Philosophy
  • Members : 585
  • Pdf File: creating-future-people.pdf

Book Short Summary:

Creating Future People offers readers a fast-paced primer on how new genetic technologies will enable parents to influence the traits of their children, including their intelligence, moral capacities, physical appearance, and immune system. It deftly explains the science of gene editing and embryo selection, and raises the central moral questions with colorful language and a brisk style. Jonathan Anomaly takes seriously the diversity of preferences parents have, and the limits of public policy in regulating what could soon be a global market for reproductive technology. He argues that once embryo selection for complex traits happens it will change the moral landscape by altering the incentives parents face. All of us will take an interest in the traits everyone else selects, and this will present coordination problems that previous writers on genetic enhancement have failed to consider. Anomaly navigates difficult ethical issues with vivid language and scientifically informed speculation about how genetic engineering will transform humanity. Key features: Offers clear explanations of scientific concepts; Explores important moral questions without academic jargon; Brings discoveries from different fields together to give us a sense of where humanity is headed.

Path Integrals and Quantum Anomalies

  • Total of Pages : 296

  • Pdf File: path-integrals-and-quantum-anomalies.pdf

Book Short Summary:

The Feynman path integrals are becoming increasingly important in the applications of quantum mechanics and field theory. The path integral formulation of quantum anomalies, i.e. the quantum breaking of certain symmetries, can now cover all the known quantum anomalies in a coherent manner. In this book the authors provide an introduction to the path integral method in quantum field theory and its applications to the analyses of quantum anomalies. No previous knowledge of field theory beyond advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics is assumed. The book provides the first coherent introductory treatment of the path integral formulation of chiral and Weyl anomalies, with applications to gauge theory in two and four dimensions, conformal field theory and string theory. Explicit and elementary path integral calculations of most of the quantum anomalies covered are given. The conceptual basis of the path integral bosonization in two-dimensional theory, which may have applications to condensed matter theory, for example, is clarified. The book also covers the recent interesting developments in the treatment of fermions and chiral anomalies in lattice gauge theory.
