Book Short Summary:

When preparing for a magic show, Anna and her friends find a talent for trouble instead in the eighth book of this “fast-paced, fun, and funny” (Megan McDonald, bestselling author of the Judy Moody series) illustrated chapter book series about the joys and challenges of elementary school friendships. Anna, Sadie, and Isabel develop an interest in magic tricks when their frenemy Justin mystifies them with a cool card trick but refuses to tell them how he did it. Determined to figure it out for themselves, the girls set out for the best place to find answers—the library!—ready to learn every magic trick in the book. But magic isn’t as easy as it appears, even with a book of instructions. When Anna goes to her neighbor Mrs. Shirley for advice, she finds out that while Mrs. S doesn’t know any magic tricks herself, her very favorite birthday party ever was a magician show where the magician pulled a rabbit out of a hat. With the neighborhood potluck coinciding with Mrs. Shirley’s seventy-sixth birthday, Anna and her friends decide to practice their own magic act to perform for her, but a whole slew of mix-ups ensue as they try to puzzle out how the tricks are done and how to figure out Justin’s secret, too. Can Anna and her friends perform some magic and get the mix-ups under control before—presto—it’s showtime?

Book Short Summary:

Based on the incredible true story of one woman’s journey to the exotic world of nineteenth-century Siam, the riveting novel that inspired The King and I. In 1862, recently widowed and with two small children to support, British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens agrees to serve as governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam (present-day Thailand), unaware that her years in the royal palace will change not only her own life, but also the future of a nation. Her relationship with King Mongkut, famously portrayed by Yul Brynner in the classic film The King and I, is complicated from the start, pitting two headstrong personalities against each other: While the king favors tradition, Anna embraces change. As governess, Anna often finds herself at cross-purposes, marveling at the foreign customs, fascinating people, and striking landscape of the kingdom and its harems, while simultaneously trying to influence her pupils—especially young Prince Chulalongkorn—with her Western ideals and values. Years later, as king, this very influence leads Chulalongkorn to abolish slavery in Siam and introduce democratic reform based on the ideas of freedom and human dignity he first learned from his beloved tutor. This captivating novel brilliantly combines in-depth research—author Margaret Landon drew from Siamese court records and Anna’s own writings—with richly imagined details to create a lush portrait of 1860s Siam. As a Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical and an Academy Award–winning film, the story of Anna and the King of Siam has enchanted millions over the years. It is a gripping tale of cultural differences and shared humanity that invites readers into a vivid and sensory world populated by unforgettable characters.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ONE OF TIME’S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR Sex and the City meets Bad Blood and Catch Me if You Can in the astonishing true story of Anna Delvey, a young con artist posing as an heiress in New York City—as told by the former Vanity Fair photo editor who got seduced by her friendship and then scammed out of more than $62,000. Rachel DeLoache Williams’s new friend Anna Delvey, a self-proclaimed German heiress, was worldly and ambitious. She was also generous—picking up the tab for lavish dinners at Le Coucou, infrared sauna sessions at HigherDOSE, drinks at the 11 Howard Library bar, and regular workout sessions with a celebrity personal trainer. When Anna proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Marrakech at the five-star La Mamounia hotel, Rachel jumped at the chance. But when Anna’s credit cards mysteriously stopped working, the dream vacation quickly took a dark turn. Anna asked Rachel to begin fronting costs—first for flights, then meals and shopping, and, finally, for their $7,500-per-night private villa. Before Rachel knew it, more than $62,000 had been charged to her credit cards. Anna swore she would reimburse Rachel the moment they returned to New York. Back in Manhattan, the repayment never materialized, and a shocking pattern of deception emerged. Rachel learned that Anna had left a trail of deceit—and unpaid bills—wherever she’d been. Mortified, Rachel contacted the district attorney, and in a stunning turn of events, found herself helping to bring down one of the city’s most notorious con artists. With breathless pacing and in-depth reporting from the person who experienced it firsthand, My Friend Anna is an unforgettable true story of “glamour, greed, lust for power” (The New York Times), and female friendship.

Book Short Summary:

If you thought you knew the story of Anna in The King and I, think again. As this riveting biography shows, the real life of Anna Leonowens was far more fascinating than the beloved story of the Victorian governess who went to work for the King of Siam. To write this definitive account, Susan Morgan traveled around the globe and discovered new information that has eluded researchers for years. Anna was born a poor, mixed-race army brat in India, and what followed is an extraordinary nineteenth-century story of savvy self-invention, wild adventure, and far-reaching influence. At a time when most women stayed at home, Anna Leonowens traveled all over the world, witnessed some of the most fascinating events of the Age of Empire, and became a well-known travel writer, journalist, teacher, and lecturer. She remains the one and only foreigner to have spent significant time inside the royal harem of Siam. She emigrated to the United States, crossed all of Russia on her own just before the revolution, and moved to Canada, where she publicly defended the rights of women and the working class. The book also gives an engrossing account of how and why Anna became an icon of American culture in The King and I and its many adaptations.

Book Short Summary:

Hellenistic Philosophy of Mind is an elegant survey of Stoic and Epicurean ideas about the soul—an introduction to two ancient schools whose belief in the soul's physicality offer compelling parallels to modern approaches in the philosophy of mind. Annas incorporates recent thinking on Hellenistic philosophy of mind so lucidly and authoritatively that specialists and nonspecialists alike will find her book rewarding. In part, the Hellenistic epoch was a "scientific" period that broke with tradition in ways that have an affinity with the modern shift from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the present day. Hellenistic philosophy of the soul, Annas argues, is in fact a philosophy of mind, especially in the treatment of such topics as perception, thought, and action.

Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. But to make this dream a reality, the Gang hatches a treacherous plan that may get them all killed. And Ada must decide whether she's willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all. Featuring an irresistibly no-nonsense, courageous, and determined heroine, Outlawed dusts off the myth of the old West and reignites the glimmering promise of the frontier with an entirely new set of feminist stakes. Anna North has crafted a pulse-racing, page-turning saga about the search for hope in the wake of death, and for truth in a climate of small-mindedness and fear.

Book Short Summary:

Ancient ethical theories, based on the notions of virtue and happiness, have struck many as an attractive alternative to modern theories. But we cannot find out whether this is true until we understand ancient ethics--and to do this we need to examine the basic structure of ancient ethical theory, not just the details of one or two theories. In this book, Annas brings together the results of a wide-ranging study of ancient ethical philosophy and presents it in a way that is easily accessible to anyone with an interest in ancient or modern ethics. She examines the fundamental notions of happiness and virtue, the role of nature in ethical justification and the relation between concern for self and concern for others. Her careful examination of the ancient debates and arguments shows that many widespread assumptions about ancient ethics are quite mistaken. Ancient ethical theories are not egoistic, and do not depend for their acceptance on metaphysical theories of a teleological kind. Most centrally, they are recognizably theories of morality, and the ancient disputes about the place of virtue in happiness can be seen as akin to modern disputes about the demands of morality.

Honor forced her to leave her fiancée in New York, and she found herself running again, this time from love. Working her way across America she brought her work ethic and her own style of integrity and love wherever she went. In Dakota Anna found love again, but with it and her life there came an abundance of hardship, sometimes taking her faith and courage close to the breaking point. Life on their prairie homestead was often harsh and the country and it’s perils were often unyielding, but it also had its heartwarming and rewarding moments and triumphs. Honoring Anna, The Winds of Time takes the reader through the Dirty Thirties, The Great Depression, the year of the wolves, WWII, and homesteading hardships like none other ever written, through the eyes of those that experienced it. Book Short Summary:

This lively and accessible introduction to Plato focuses on the philosophy and argument of his writings, drawing the reader into Plato's way of doing philosophy, and the general themes of his thinking. This is not a book to leave the reader standing in the outer court of introduction and background information, but leads directly into Plato's argument. It looks at Plato as a thinker grappling with philosophical problems in a variety of ways, rather than a philosopher with a fully worked-out system. It includes a brief account of Plato's life and the various interpretations that have been drawn from the sparse remains of information. It stresses the importance of the founding of the Academy and the conception of philosophy as a subject. Julia Annas discusses Plato's style of writing: his use of the dialogue form, his use of what we today call fiction, and his philosophical transformation of myths. She also looks at his discussions of love and philosophy, his attitude to women, and to homosexual love, explores Plato's claim that virtue is sufficient for happiness, and touches on his arguments for the immortality of the soul and his ideas about the nature of the universe. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Anna: A Grace Filled Life portrays a moving tribute to Anna Giesbrecht—daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and widow—roles which barely skim the surface of what her life has really meant. Following Anna’s life from the very beginning in Mexico to her life changing move to Canada, where she grew deep roots spanning her entire adult life, Anna’s story is one of sorrow, hope, victory, and love—her precious family and most of all, her Jesus. From early on, Anna came to know how Christ’s love was shown, through the life and the love of her parents. As she faced her own personal battles, such as an unplanned pregnancy and life as a single parent, this familiar love continually shone through as she received support from her parents and family. Life was challenging but drawing from this strength, Anna grew into her faith and eventually she married, and her days revolved around work and more family. As trials and circumstances tested her faith, Anna chose to give thanks and to pray without ceasing. This is an intimate story of a so-called ordinary woman, and the ripple effect that a life, well-lived, can have. Her legacy stretches across friendships, communities, and generations of family. Lovingly told, this biography brings to life the story of a remarkable woman, and the courage and tenacity she has portrayed throughout her life will no doubt offer encouragement and inspiration to all. Book Short Summary:

“A story that drew me in and gave me a tangible, personal landscape to explore spiritual principles as experienced in the lives of the characters in the book—simple lives well lived that could easily apply to any of us. Anna’s story is a journey and a legacy of love, the most important and only thing any of us leave behind.” —Christopher Tims, renegade mystic and founder of The Order of the Blue Star “‘Maybe all of life is a story,’ Anna’s father says to her in one of their early birthday talks in a mountain meadow, a place that becomes both setting and metaphor. How does one tell an engaging tale of several generations without including hundreds of details about each era? Katy’s Legacy is a demonstration that it can be done in the hands of a skillful writer. This story within a story—within yet another story—flows naturally from one generation to another with gifts of wisdom and love passed down into new life interpretations. The reader settles into this book as effortlessly as curling up on a comfortable couch. Told cleanly and clearly, the story underneath the facts and passing events in the lives of the women is a universal story of change and constancy and the power of spiritual truths. Through her characters, author Davia Massey gently reminds us that being true to one’s self brings wisdom, and that is a lasting and sacred legacy.” —Gloria Karpinski, spiritual teacher, counselor, and author of Where Two Worlds Touch and Barefoot on Holy Ground

In 1897 a young man named Solomon fell in love with and married a beautiful young woman named Anna. They lived in Russia, which was dangerous at that time for a Jewish family, so Solomon moved to the United States, where he worked and saved until he had enough money to send Anna a ticket for the voyage across the ocean. But when Solomon went to meet Anna's ship, Anna's younger brother was waiting for him. Solomon took in her brother and worried and saved until he could send the money for Anna's passage again-but this time, Anna's older brother was waiting. When Solomon sent the money a third time and Anna's mother arrived, Solomon wondered if he would ever see his dear wife again. Elaine Snyder's Anna & Solomon is based on the true story of the author's grandparents' immigration. A Margaret Ferguson Book

Book Short Summary:

Annas Miracles is the auto biography of my life. I have tried to tell the simple story of how my husband. Stuart and I, fell in love and lived an adventurous life. We were both raised on ranches in West Texas Hill Country and when we became adults and married, we moved out of our comfort zone and embraced a world far different than what we knew as children. We fi rst went to California, then to Washington, D. C., and later to other parts of the United States, including Alaska. My husband helped build a tracking station for the Air Force in Pretoria, South Africa, and in Alaska. Stuart was a Tech Rep for Philco/Ford Corp; and we went from one state to another as the job required. I was expected to set up housekeeping under various conditions, some were not so easy, like living in Alaska and having to commute from one island to another by sea plane.. Having to pack up and move whenever a job opened up even if it meant having to follow Stuart later and not move with him. We managed to stay together and make a good life for ourselves wherever we happened to be.. I have documented our many moves and our life as it fi nally settled down and we found home back in Texas to raise our two daughters. Stuart became a Space Scientist at NASA still employed by Philco/Ford/Loreal/Aerospace Division. In 1993, I was diagnosed with Stage IV, Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. The Doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center found cancer in both sides of my backbone and bone marrow, fi ve tumors in my head, and 89 lymph nodes with cancer from the neck down. I entered a 10 year Clinical Trial, and I was the only patient to survive . My Doctor told me that My Jesus must have healed me, he could not explain why I was still alive. Our family faced many diffi culties during our life but we made it through by believing in God and trusting in Him . I hope my Journal brings hope to those who have diffi culties and think that they are alone. God is real and still answers prayers today.
