Book Excerpt :

'He's a great coach. He lives and breathes the game. There's nothing he doesn't know' Brian O'Driscoll 'The best coach Irish rugby - arguably Irish sport - has ever had' Malachy Clerkin, Irish Times In the autumn of 2010, a little-known New Zealander called Joe Schmidt took over as head coach at Leinster. He had never been in charge of a professional team. After Leinster lost three of their first four games, a prominent Irish rugby pundit speculated that Schmidt had 'lost the dressing room'. Nine years on, Joe Schmidt has stepped down as Ireland coach having achieved success on a scale never before seen in Irish rugby. Two Heineken Cups in three seasons with Leinster. Three Six Nations championships in six seasons with Ireland, including the Grand Slam in 2018. And a host of firsts: the first Irish victory in South Africa; the first Irish defeat of the All Blacks, and then a second; and Ireland's first number 1 world ranking. Along the way, Schmidt became a byword for precision and focus in coaching, remarkable attention to detail and the highest of standards. But who is Joe Schmidt? In Ordinary Joe, Schmidt tells the story of his life and influences: the experiences and management ideas that made him the coach, and the man, that he is today. And his diaries of the 2018 Grand Slam and the 2019 Rugby World Cup provide a brilliantly intimate insight into the stresses and joys of coaching a national team in victory and defeat. From the small towns in New Zealand's North Island where he played barefoot rugby and jostled around the dinner table with seven siblings, to the training grounds and video rooms where he consistently kept his teams a step ahead of the opposition, Ordinary Joe reveals an ordinary man who has helped his teams to achieve extraordinary things. 'Rugby obsessives and amateur coaches will revel in the insight that Schmidt offers into his training methods, tactics and preparation ... Full of insight, emotion and considered analysis' Irish Daily Mail 'An insight into the fascinating personality of the man who has been the single most influential figure in Irish rugby over the last decade' Irish Times 'He is clearly more than an ordinary coach, the winning of two Heinekens, beating New Zealand twice, the 2018 Grand Slam and reaching no.1 in the World Rankings are positive brushstrokes, marking Irish rugby for ever ... A rocky read about exceptional deeds, told in extraordinary fashion' Irish Daily Star 'Undoubtedly the greatest coach in Irish rugby history' Daily Telegraph

Book Short Summary:

“Polly Winslow is the last woman on earth I’d ever consider getting involved with.” Ellie Winslow thinks her new fifth-grade teacher, Mr. Matthews, will be the perfect husband for her Aunt Polly. He’s tall and good-looking and he has blue eyes, just like every hero in the romance books her aunt writes. A con-artist in the making, Ellie tells a little white lie to get Mr. Matthews to her aunt’s doorstep. Mr. Matthews and Aunt Polly just have to look in each other’s eyes and all will be happily ever after. Right? Not quite. From his early years, Joe Matthews has striven for perfection in all facets of his life. Polly Winslow is the complete opposite of the ideal mate he’s envisioned for himself. Pretty and charming she may be, but she’s way too free-spirited—a chaotic, whimsical whirlwind that reminds him too much of everything he’s been running away from since he was a boy. “I don’t care if he’s the last single guy on the planet. I’m not interested. Period.” Joe may have the most gorgeous blue eyes that Polly's ever seen, but he’s no match for the larger-than-life fictional heroes that stand front and center in both her daydreams and the romance novels she writes. In her opinion, he’s just an average, ordinary guy, and he’s way too neat and fastidious. Besides—no matter how much her fingers itch to remove his tie and muss up his hair—she’s keeping all thoughts of real-life romance on the back burner until her goal of becoming a published writer is realized. Maybe it’s time for two stubborn people to let go of long-held ideals and perceptions and open their minds and hearts to the extraordinary love that is waiting on the doorstep. This book is part of a series but can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone. Each book in the series has an HEA with no cliff-hangers. What readers have said about Her Ordinary Joe: -"Very good writing! I enjoyed Polly and Joe’s easy camaraderie and how they learned to look beyond first impressions." -"This is a sweet clean romance with lots of laughter. Ellie is a precocious girl who has big plans for her beloved aunt Polly. Look out Joe! The characters are quite opposite and struggle with their wide differences. I liked that this romance didn't rely on jealousy or cheating to increase the drama. For the most part these are ordinary people living ordinary lives." -"Well written with interesting characters and cleverly related subplot. Part of a series but complete and satisfying in itself. Fun reading." -"Who would have thought that a romance novel about a romance writer writing a romance novel would be so interesting. The characters well written and unique. They try so hard to stick to their ideals of their "perfect" love as these opposites attract."

Book Short Summary:

Tribalism isn’t new to the human experience. In fact, it’s been around as long as humankind. However, lately, the will to survive has grown with intensity, and has given rise to a distorted sense of self-importance and self-indulgence. Self-interest has come to divide people and destroy a vital sense of community and civility that bonds a society. Author Lorenzo D. Leonard has studied this phenomenon and introduces an alternative way of life; the will to live. The education, development, and practice of commendable character exposes a person’s innate qualities of good. Leonard proclaims how the attainment of personal credibility and relevance becomes less of an external focus and more of an internal fulfillment through the process of character development. However, this is only the case when an individual can put aside the will to survive and embrace the will to live. Tribalism becomes less of a concern when the qualities of transparency, accountability, integrity, and community are adopted. The Rules of Engagement: The Will to Live vs. The Will to Survive is a deep dive into the very ideas that transition people into being more humane with one another. Within this literary body of work, readers will recognize the signs of a life lived authentically as well as the limitations that come with a distorted sense of power and superiority.

Book Short Summary:

With their lavish costumes and sets, ebullient song and dance numbers, and iconic movie stars, the musicals that mgm produced in the 1940s seem today to epitomize camp. Yet they were originally made to appeal to broad, mainstream audiences. In this lively, nuanced, and provocative reassessment of the mgm musical, Steven Cohan argues that this seeming incongruity—between the camp value and popular appreciation of these musicals—is not as contradictory as it seems. He demonstrates that the films’ extravagance and queerness were deliberate elements and keys to their popular success. In addition to examining the spectatorship of the mgm musical, Cohan investigates the genre’s production and marketing, paying particular attention to the studio’s employment of a largely gay workforce of artists and craftspeople. He reflects on the role of the female stars—including Judy Garland, Debbie Reynolds, Esther Williams, and Lena Horne—and he explores the complex relationship between Gene Kelley’s dancing and his masculine persona. Cohan looks at how, in the decades since the 1950s, the marketing and reception of the mgm musical have negotiated the more publicly recognized camp value attached to the films. He considers the status of Singin’ in the Rain as perhaps the first film to be widely embraced as camp; the repackaging of the musicals as nostalgia and camp in the That’s Entertainment! series as well as on home video and cable; and the debates about Garland’s legendary gay appeal among her fans on the Internet. By establishing camp as central to the genre, Incongruous Entertainment provides a new way of looking at the musical.

Book Short Summary:

Popular music artists, as performers in the public eye, offer a privileged site for the witnessing and analysis of ageing and its mediation. The Late Voice undertakes such an analysis by considering issues of time, memory, innocence and experience in modern Anglophone popular song and the use by singers and songwriters of a 'late voice'. Lateness here refers to five primary issues: chronology (the stage in an artist's career); the vocal act (the ability to convincingly portray experience); afterlife (posthumous careers made possible by recorded sound); retrospection (how voices 'look back' or anticipate looking back); and the writing of age, experience, lateness and loss into song texts. There has been recent growth in research on ageing and the experience of later stages of life, focusing on physical health, lifestyle and psychology, with work in the latter field intersecting with the field of memory studies. The Late Voice seeks to connect age, experience and lateness with particular performers and performance traditions via the identification and analysis of a late voice in singers and songwriters of mid-late twentieth century popular music.

Book Short Summary:

“From the Book of Job to the Life of Job Titus Cannon: Standing Tall While Facing the Trials That Come Into Your Life,” written by Job Titus Cannon, is an inspiring faith based work which shares with the reader the personal challenges and struggles the author and many Christians encounter in everyday life while eventually prospering. Furthermore, this book encourages Christian believers that faith and a love for God can allow you (and any other believer) to overcome struggles that may come into your everyday life. The Book of Job is one of the truly amazing stories in the Holy Bible. It is a great place to find encouragement when experiencing difficulties and dilemmas. We all face personal problems in our lives. But more importantly, the Book of Job also gives us an example of how to handle great challenges in our lives. Job (the Bible patriarch) is wealthy, successful, and highly respected. He is a man of God and a man of family. But life happens and calamity comes. Everything that Job has and everything that he knows is destroyed. Job’s faith is challenged. As a result of Job’s challenges, he is forced to reevaluate everything he thought he was. He realized that it was easy to be faithful and strong when everything was going well, but when he was stripped of everything...... Job never cursed God, but he questioned God. In the end, Job realized that suffering is a part of the Christian walk, and eventually he was not only restored of all he lost, but the Holy Bible tells that he received twice as much as he had before. In “From the Book of Job to the Life of Job Titus Cannon: Standing Tall While Facing the Trials that Come into Your Life”, each chapter begins with thought provoking questions. These questions encourage the reader to look to the Holy Bible while using the life of Job as a reference, along with interspersing Job Titus Cannon’s own experiences. Among the issues the author confronts are: God’s ability to make an example out of one’s life, our ability to react positively to life’s negative moments, can a person ever be ready to handle really bad occurrences?, do we have an effective support staff of loving friends and family to surround us in our time of need?, our attitude towards the response of God in our time of need, and our ability to properly handle the bestowed blessings following the turbulent storm. This book gives examples of how the bible patriarch Job handled his numerous storms. This book also gives perspective and scriptural references to help the modern day Christian overcome the many trials that they may face. Job Titus Cannon’s ability to convey his own experiences along with relating them to biblical teachings further enhances the appeal of the book. This book is not only personable but practical because we all struggle with standing tall while facing trials. Book Short Summary:

Written against the academically dominant but simplistic romanticization of popular music as a positive force, this book focuses on the 'dark side' of the subject. It is a pioneering examination of the ways in which popular music has been deployed in association with violence, ranging from what appears to be an incidental relationship, to one in which music is explicitly applied as an instrument of violence. A preliminary overview of the physiological and cognitive foundations of sounding/hearing which are distinctive within the sensorium, discloses in particular their potential for organic and psychic violence. The study then elaborates working definitions of key terms (including the vexed idea of the 'popular') for the purposes of this investigation, and provides a historical survey of examples of the nexus between music and violence, from (pre)Biblical times to the late nineteenth century. The second half of the book concentrates on the modern era, marked in this case by the emergence of technologies by which music can be electronically augmented, generated, and disseminated, beginning with the advent of sound recording from the 1870s, and proceeding to audio-internet and other contemporary audio-technologies. Johnson and Cloonan argue that these technologies have transformed the potential of music to mediate cultural confrontations from the local to the global, particularly through violence. The authors present a taxonomy of case histories in the connection between popular music and violence, through increasingly intense forms of that relationship, culminating in the topical examples of music and torture, including those in Bosnia, Darfur, and by US forces in Iraq and Guantmo Bay. This, however, is not simply a succession of data, but an argumentative synthesis. Thus, the final section debates the implications of this nexus both for popular music studies itself, and also in cultural policy and regulation, the ethics of citizenship, and arguments about human

Book Short Summary:

Can anything be more agonizing than the burden of an idea that we are doomed to die at the end? Imagine all your struggles on this earth, and the experiences you had acquired, will one day be gone as that flash of life energy leaves the encumbered casing. That is exactly what most people accept to be true. Our inability to understand our soul’s journeys is our inability to understand our physical and immaterial existence. That most of us cannot differentiate physical material and nonphysical immaterial existence is reason enough not to understand creation and its purpose. But once we understand, we begin to see the purpose for physical material death and the reason for the immaterial part of us to rejuvenate by taking a new cocoon—a new body—to continue its journeys and its purpose to learn and experience. Always remember that life existed before creations.

Book Short Summary:

There is much written, rumored, told, and retold about Marilyn Monroe, but the most unusual and remarkable fact about her is this: In person as well in her films, she appeared to be outright luminous?enveloped by a glow, like a firefly in the dark.Even Laurence Olivier, who costarred with Marilyn in the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl, saw it. Though he seemed to dislike her intensely, he had to admit that, in all her scenes, she lit up the screen. But exquisite as it can be, luminosity can be a kind of camouflage. It can hide the truth underneath. What exactly was Marilyn illuminating in the atmosphere that surrounded her? Her beauty was certainly stunning, dazzling—blinding, even—but what did it hide? Marilyn, more brilliant than many understood, knew well the difference between looking upon the light and seeing beyond the glow. “Men do not see me,” she said. “They just lay their eyes on me.” Psychoanalyst and longtime woman's biographer Dr. Alma Bond imagines, in detail, a several-year stretch during the late 1950s and early 1960s, when Marilyn, an exceedingly fragile figure, submits to analysis on the couch of Manhattan psychoanalyst Dr. Darcy Dale and, following her . return to Hollywood, corresponds with her. Brilliantly, entertainingly, and movingly, Marilyn Monroe: On the Couch shows just what lay beneath Marilyn's radiance. Dr. Dale, a fictional stand-in for the author, Dr. Bond, sees Marilyn Monroe as few ever have, both inside and out, and transfers those insights to readers. It's impossible to imagine anyone providing a better, more complete, intimate, and unforgettable understanding of this truly remarkable, iconic, and even pivotal figure in film and sexual history.

Book Short Summary:

Male-female detective pairings often exhibit offbeat, dark humor and considerable chemistry as they investigate crimes. They have proven to be both entertaining and alluring on screen and television. This work reveals an evolutionary progression in the depictions of three detective duos: the married pair Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man, black-humored special agents John Steed and Emma Peel of The Avengers, and finally the smoldering Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. Ten chapters offer critical analysis, rich with background information and insider observations. Production comments are given throughout. Three appendices (one for each series) offer episode guides with original broadcast dates, credits and brief synopses.

Book Short Summary:

This follow-up to A Spiritual Renegade’s Guide to the Good Life calls for the biggest revolution of all: the overthrow of our obsessive quest to be somebody. Like boardwalk tourists poking their faces through two-dimensional cutouts of the muscle man and bathing beauty, we are all desperately trying to be somebody, to be “special.” No one wants to be a loser, a small fry, a big zero. But maybe we’ve got it all wrong. With an edgy tone and radical perspective, Lama Marut shows that the quest to distinguish ourselves is the true cause of our dissatisfaction, and it continually leaves us feeling isolated and alone. Drawing from the spiritual truism that only by losing the self can we discover our real potential, Be Nobody provides guidance, actions, and simple meditations to help you lay down the heavy burden of trying to be somebody—without requiring you to live in a monastery or retire to a cave in the Himalayas. When we vacate ourselves, we will finally have the freedom to find true fulfillment. So stop narrating your life and start living it. Be nobody.
