Book Excerpt :

Mike Kinney shouldn’t be alive today. When his truck slammed into a telephone pole and burst into flames, the seventeen-year-old became pinned in the driver seat. Moments before the vehicle was consumed by fire, Mike was pulled from the burning wreckage of twisted metal as his body burned. After his guitar was incinerated in the blaze, Pete Townsend from The Who, a musical inspiration, sent him a new guitar, offering, “This is the Phoenix.” In the wake of his Phoenix moment of rising from the ashes, Mike wanted to believe that his life had been saved for a unique purpose. But along the way—through a brutally painful physical recovery, learning to live with a brain injury, and eventually several vocational disappointments—that purpose to which he believed God had called him seemed in jeopardy. Determined, though, Mike pressed on. Mike Kinney’s life was saved by God from the flames for a unique purpose, and Out of the Fire invites readers to live out the purpose God has for their lives—even when, and especially when, that purpose seems to be in jeopardy.

Book Short Summary:

MURIEL MCCARTHY This volume originated from a seminar organised by Richard H. Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. Some years ago we were informed that of the 25,000 books in Marsh's at least 5,000 English books or books printed in England were printed between 1640 and 1700.

Book Short Summary:

The Blueprint for Overcoming Darkness and Living in God’s Light. Our world unravels more each day. It feels as if we’re drowning in a sea churning with greed, violence, and lust. As darkness advances, hope dims. Yet within that reality, God gives us a profound mandate... Be Light. Light has always defined God and his followers. At creation, God spoke light into existence. Jesus is the light of the world. And we are born to absorb and then reflect God’s light. In Be Light Samuel Rodriguez--described by Fox News and CNN as “America’s most influential Latino Evangelical leader”--provides a blueprint for confronting darkness in every realm of our lives. He issues a clarion call for individual believers and the church to rise up and once again be that bright city on a hill, which doesn’t simply expose the invading darkness, but overcomes it with God’s blazing light.

Book Short Summary:

Explores the relationship between people and angels, through the eyes of the early church. Heaven is closer than we realize. Its boundaries overlap our own, and angels move in and out of our porous present, this moment that seems to us so solid and concrete. If that reality seems dim to us now, it beamed for the early Christians. Through their writings, sermons, songs, and art, the ancient faithful confessed a powerful and vivid belief that angels help carry us on our journey to God. Rooted in the Scripture and following this ancient understanding, Lifted by Angels reveals: the role that angels play in the lives of people and in God’s plan of salvation the different ranks and functions of angels how Satan and his demons fell from grace and plagued humans the functions of guardian angels and how God assigns them to fit our personal needs how guardian angels help us resist evil, temptation, and the devil the way angels join with us in our prayers, even adding their own to ours the service angels provide in worship Featuring examples of angels in ancient icons and frescoes and supported by extensive research on the early church and its pastors, poets, theologians, and artists, Lifted by Angels answers universal curiosity about angels and the unseen world, leaving readers inspired and hopeful about the nearness of God.

Book Short Summary:

Our lives consist of moments. Stitched together like the seams on a coat, these moments cloak us in awareness and possibility. But what if we miss our moments? What if we live in a bland state of wandering? Seeking growth, seeking passion—but missing the moments in which God tries to pull the thread through the cloth in the way we’ve dreamed of? Watershed moments are the turning points in our lives brought on by circumstances which stop us in our tracks. A new direction; a fresh perspective; an answered prayer; a humble surrender—these are the moments that redirect us; leaving us profoundly changed. Through a progression of seven types of Watershed moments (the Watersheds of change, unraveling, rebuilding, purpose, abandoning [control], overcoming, and belief), Gari portrays life as a series of moments we encounter where we can face or turn away from change. A life marked by Watershed moments starts from the place where we live desperately hoping for some kind of new and freeing adventure. Through the lives of Abraham, David, Rebekah, Jacob, Rachel, Nehemiah, Peter and many more, as well as through personal Watershed moments in her life and the lives of several women who have written their own stories, Watershed Moments is a bold invitation to pay attention to the revelation God gives in the twinkling of a second at our moments of change. God uses watershed moments to position us to go one direction

It’s easy to speak to others about the Jesus who cared for the poor, healed the sick, and preached love and justice for the least of these. But what about the God who tells the Israelites to wage war and kill entire people groups? Or threatens exile and then delivers? Or sends people to hell? Can these really be the same God? The simple answer is, yes. God in His Own Image takes you on a journey through the Bible exploring God’s true nature. You’ll study instances of great mercy and great severity, and by the end, you’ll begin to see why both God’s compassion and his wrath are necessary, important, and even beautiful. Get to know the God who is both Lion and Lamb, both Judge and Father, both kind and severe, and perfect in every way.

Book Short Summary:

This is Nick Armbrister's first collection of short stories, written from the late 90's to the present day. They cover several topics, like his poems, but in much more depth-from satanic actions by people worshipping an evil god ('Loss of the Ice Queen') to warriors of the sky using man's most powerful weapons in anger ('Final Flight'), to an attempt to control fate ('Spell to Find Amelia Earhart'), and to a post-nuclear townscape ('Second History', set in Oldham). Two of the stories are fragments of larger uncompleted/lost work that deserve inclusion here. One day these projects may well see the light of day, but for now, the author hopes the reader will enjoy his 'dark work'-in time he hopes to do a follow-up. These stories span his entire writing career. Though he prefers poetry as a means of incisive, concentrated power of expression, he loves short stories for their fun; even those that give one a glimpse into the dark side that lurks beneath the surface of life!

Kiss was the only one in the world who could defeat the Collector, the strongest monster in recent history. Now, she is the only one who can vanquish the Great Nightmare. Or so Seraphim and the others believe, but Kiss silently doubts whether even her love is strong enough to turn Lock into an angel—because how can she muster any passion for the monster who destroyed her five years ago; for the beast that has now taken Zane away from her? Being his creator, Skylar knows how mighty Lock is, and to atone for her mistakes before the angels will take her life, she tries to do anything in her power to make sure the world’s greatest threat will be eliminated—in case Kiss will fail. She seeks the help of August, but will their plan work, or be torn to pieces once again? The world is on the verge of drowning in darkness. Kiss’s passion might not be just Zane’s, but everyone’s salvation… Or their demise.

Book Short Summary:

Deification in the Greek patristic tradition was the fulfilment of the destiny for which humanity was created - not merely salvation from sin but entry into the fullness of the divine life of the Trinity. This book, the first on the subject for over sixty years, traces the history of deification from its birth as a second-century metaphor with biblical roots to its maturity as a doctrine central to the spiritual life of the Byzantine Church. Drawing attention to the richness and diversity of the patristic approaches from Irenaeus to Maximus the Confessor, Norman Russell offers a full discussion of the background and context of the doctrine, at the same time highlighting its distinctively Christian character.

Book Short Summary:

Angels are a basic tenet of belief in Islam, appearing in various types and genres of text, from eschatology to law and theology to devotional material. This book presents the first comprehensive study of angels in Islam, through an analysis of a collection of traditions (hadīth) compiled by the 15th century polymath Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūtī (d. 911/1505). With a focus on the principal angels in Islam, the author provides an analysis and critical translation of hadith included in al-Suyuti’s al-Haba’ik fi akhbar al-mala’ik (‘The Arrangement of the Traditions about Angels’) – many of which are translated into English for the first time. The book discusses the issues that the hadīth raise, exploring why angels are named in particular ways; how angels are described and portrayed in the hadīth; the ways in which angels interact with humans; and the theological controversies which feature angels. From this it is possible to place al-Suyūtī’s collection in its religious and historical milieu, building on the study of angels in Judaism and Christianity to explore aspects of comparative religious beliefs about angels as well as relating Muslim beliefs about angels to wider debates in Islamic Studies. Broadening the study of Islamic angelology and providing a significant amount of newly translated primary source material, this book will be of great interest to scholars of Islam, divinity, and comparative religion.

Book Short Summary:

The contemporary revival of interest in the Sacred as a category of philosophico-religious reflection here finds a radical reversal of the traditional direction, taking the Sacred as the starting point of the itinerary toward the Divine. The wide variety of essays contained in this volume attempt to ground philosophy of the Sacred and the Divine in phenomenological evidence. Though employing different methodologies, the contributors register by and large the contribution of A-T. Tymieniecka's phenomenology of life in providing a significant 20th century vision for the accomplishment of this task. Its pursuit finds here expression in philosophical, historical, literary and political explorations leading to construing phenomenology of the Sacred as a prerequisite to the investigation of the Divine. The contributors to this extraordinary collection are: C. Bédard, A. Ales Bello, Gerard Bucher, D. Chidester, D. Conchi, M. Kronegger, S. Laycock, Ph. Liverziani, J.N. Mohanty, E. Moutsopoulos, A.M. Olson, Y. Park, G. Penzo, B. Ross, C. Osowiec Ruoff, Th. Ryba, J. Smith, A-T. Tymieniecka and E. Wyschogrod.

Book Short Summary:

The Redemption of Professor EvelynThe Redemption of Professor Evelyn off ers both a discussion of the unseen spirit world and a parable of the supernatural as it affects one individual, Professor Horace Evelyn. Mankind, in all generations and cultures, has debated the existence of spirits and angelic beings. Weve wondered if angels and demons actually are myth or reality. A belief in evil spirits has always been inherent in the cultures of man. For example, the exterior facades of cathedrals built during medieval times incorporated gargoyles in their design in the belief that the ugly, grotesque features of their carved faces would scare away evil or unclean spirits. In contrast, angels are good spirits. Th e Creator endowed them with innate, independent life. They were given immortality. Spirits live forever, because they dont have a body to wear down, sustain damage or injury, or die. Enter Professor Horace Evelyn, who is being treated for severe schizophrenia. Professor Evelyn has not been able to fi nd a medical cure, but he soon realizes that he does not need a doctorhe needs an exorcist. His soul has become the site of a cataclysmic struggle between the forces of good and evil. Th is story is not about regaining his mental health; its about the salvation of his soul.

Book Short Summary:

The remarkable truth about angels, the agents of Heaven, unveiled through Scripture—from the New York Times best-selling author of Everything You Need “Outstanding! As one would expect from David Jeremiah, this book reflects a theologian’s concern, a pastor’s heart, and a Biblicist’s accuracy.”—Dr. Bruce Wilkinson People have long been fascinated by stories of angel sightings, yet many contemporary beliefs about angels are based on misconception and myth rather than solid, biblical truth. As he’s done so brilliantly for decades, respected Bible teacher Dr. David Jeremiah of Turning Point Ministries uses Scripture to unveil the remarkable truth about these agents of heaven and their role in our world and our lives. What are angels? What is their role in God’s plan? Are they present? Do they appear? Do they give us personal insight about our work and our worship? In this broad and thorough survey of Scripture, Dr. Jeremiah clearly and simply separates fact from fiction as it relates to angels. His enlightening findings are supported with illustrations and insights from prominent teachers, such as Billy Graham, Corrie ten Boom, C. S. Lewis, and more. Dr. Jeremiah’s down-to-earth style guides readers around the hype about angels and directly into everything you need to know about the “substance of things unseen!”

Book Short Summary:

To begin at the beginning, Richard Arnold was one of those men whom the world is wont to call dreamers and enthusiasts before they succeed, and heaven-born geniuses and benefactors of humanity afterwards. He was twenty-six, and for nearly six years past he had devoted himself, soul and body, to a single idea—to the so far unsolved problem of aërial navigation. This idea had haunted him ever since he had been able to think logically at all—first dimly at school, and then more clearly at college, where he had carried everything before him in mathematics and natural science, until it had at last become a ruling passion that crowded everything else out of his life, and made him, commercially speaking, that most useless of social units—a one-idea'd man, whose idea could not be put into working form. He was an orphan, with hardly a blood relation in the world. He had started with plenty of friends, mostly made at college, who thought he had a brilliant future before him, and therefore looked upon him as a man whom it might be useful to know. But as time went on, and no results came, these dropped off, and he got to be looked upon as an amiable lunatic, who was wasting his great talents and what money he had on impracticable fancies, when he might have been earning a handsome income if he had stuck to the beaten track, and gone in for practical work. The distinctions that he had won at college, and the reputation he had gained as a wonderfully clever chemist and mechanician, had led to several offers of excellent positions in great engineering firms; but to the surprise and disgust of his friends he had declined them all. No one knew why, for he had kept his secret with the almost passionate jealousy of the true enthusiast, and so his refusals were put down to sheer foolishness, and he became numbered with the geniuses who are failures because they are not practical. When he came of age he had inherited a couple of thousand pounds, which had been left in trust to him by his father. Had it not been for that two thousand pounds he would have been forced to employ his knowledge and his talents conventionally, and would probably have made a fortune. But it was just enough to relieve him from the necessity of earning his living for the time being, and to make it possible for him to devote himself entirely to the realisation of his life-dream—at any rate until the money was gone. Of course he yielded to the temptation—nay, he never gave the other course a moment's thought. Two thousand pounds would last him for years; and no one could have persuaded him that with complete leisure, freedom from all other concerns, and money for the necessary experiments, he would not have succeeded long before his capital was exhausted.

Book Short Summary:

The Millenary Fraud is a book on the Bible that is the product of more than 18 years of my life as a Christian. What I have done in this book is nothing more than invite people to check the Bible thoroughly and to compare the different verses that contradict each other as other authors have done. I want people to have the same knowledge of the Bible as I and decide for themselves. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that god never spoke to Abraham. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that god never spoke to Moses and the Israelites on Mount Sinai. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that god forgets and lies. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that god does not keep his promises. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that god does not know everything. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that Jesus was a thief and a fraudster. · Evidence had been found in the Bible that Jesus was not the son of Virgin Mary. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that Jesus lied openly at least 10 times. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that Jesus will not come back, for he is 1800 years late. · Evidence has been found in the Bible that it is impossible for Jesus to come back. · This is not a book about delusive thoughts or interpretations of the Bible and Qur’an by the author. It is about clear proof, with evidence throughout ‘given’ by the books of faith.

Book Short Summary:

While most people think that the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are the only sacred writings of the early Christians, this is not at all the case. A companion volume to Bart Ehrman's Lost Christianities, this book offers an anthology of up-to-date and readable translations of many non-canonical writings from the first centuries after Christ--texts that have been for the most part lost or neglected for almost two millennia. Here is an array of remarkably varied writings from early Christian groups whose visions of Jesus differ dramatically from our contemporary understanding. Readers will find Gospels supposedly authored by the apostle Philip, James the brother of Jesus, Mary Magdalen, and others. There are Acts originally ascribed to John and to Thecla, Paul's female companion; there are Epistles allegedly written by Paul to the Roman philosopher Seneca. And there is an apocalypse by Simon Peter that offers a guided tour of the afterlife, both the glorious ecstasies of the saints and the horrendous torments of the damned, and an Epistle by Titus, a companion of Paul, which argues page after page against sexual love, even within marriage, on the grounds that physical intimacy leads to damnation. In all, the anthology includes fifteen Gospels, five non-canonical Acts of the Apostles, thirteen Epistles, a number of Apocalypses and Secret Books, and several Canon lists. Ehrman has included a general introduction, plus brief introductions to each piece. This important anthology gives readers a vivid picture of the range of beliefs that battled each other in the first centuries of the Christian era.

Book Short Summary:

For the past twenty years, I have thought and developed an interest in what I call the mystery mission of salvation in Christ Jesus. This curiosity has intensified over the past three years, and I am compelled by the divine spirit of Christ Jesus to put my belief and faith in ink on paper. Apostle Paul, the greatest theologian, stated, “Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach” (1 Cor. 9:16). Like Paul, I am writing this book not of my own choice but of necessity. I believe I have been entrusted with this assignment to unveil the mystery mission of salvation in Christ Jesus. Paul stated, “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died” (2 Cor. 5:14). The love shown by Christ Jesus (Gal. 2:20, Rom. 8:35–38) is the model of authentic existence and compels believers like Paul, who thought that he had no choice but to imitate the selflessness of Christ Jesus to preach the Gospel of salvation in Christ Jesus. As a believer in the Savior, our Lord, and God Christ Jesus, I am obliged to write this book about the Son of God who wrought salvation to the universe through his birth on the first Christmas Day, his mission on earth for about three years, his cruel death on the cross on the first Good Friday, and his ultimate resurrection on the first Easter Sunday morning. My purpose in this book is not to boast on human intelligence or ability; on the contrary, it is to show the love of Christ Jesus who condescended and descended humbly from his divine heavenly city to this sinful earthly city in order to bring eternal salvation to all those who believe in him. I do hope and pray ardently and fervently that this book might help just one person to come to know salvation in Christ Jesus for the first time or open the spiritual eye and mind of a believer to have a deeper and more holy understanding of the amazing grace and love of Christ Jesus, who brings salvation to humanity by his wonderful and mysterious mission of salvation, which is unveiled in this book. That person in either situation could be you.

Book Short Summary:

The first anthology of Jewish mythology in English, Tree of Souls reveals a mythical tradition as rich and as fascinating as any in the world. Drawing from the Bible, the Pseudepigrapha, the Talmud and Midrash, the kabbalistic literature, medieval folklore, Hasidic texts, and oral lore collected in the modern era, Schwartz has gathered together nearly 700 of the key Jewish myths. The myths themselves are marvelous. We read of Adams diamond and the Land of Eretz (where it is always dark), the fall of Lucifer and the quarrel of the sun and the moon, the Treasury of Souls and the Divine Chariot. We discover new tales about the great figures of the Hebrew Bible, from Adam to Moses; stories about God's Bride, the Shekhinah, and the evil temptress, Lilith; plus many tales about angels and demons, spirits and vampires, giant beasts and the Golem. Equally important, Schwartz provides a wealth of additional information. For each myth, he includes extensive commentary, revealing the source of the myth and explaining how it relates to other Jewish myths as well as to world literature (for instance, comparing Eves release of evil into the world with Pandoras). For ease of use, Schwartz divides the volume into ten books, Myths of God, Myths of Creation, Myths of Heaven, Myths of Hell, Myths of the Holy Word, Myths of the Holy Time, Myths of the Holy People, Myths of the Holy Land, Myths of Exile, and Myths of the Messiah.

Book Short Summary:

Throughout his life, Isaac remained a passive tent dweller. He did not go to find a wife; his servant brought a wife to him. He did not go to war; and when conflict arose, he withdrew. In the story of his binding, he was passive, and it appears as though he was bound forever on the altar. Isaac was dominated by his father Abraham, his wife Rebecca, Abimelech king of Gerar, and his sons Jacob and Esau. For most of his life, he is led by others, and his actions are reactions to the developing situations. He appears to have little personality and is better known as the son of his father Abraham, or the father of his sons Jacob and Esau.

Book Short Summary:

John Geiger’s last book, The Third Man Factor: Surviving the Impossible, explored an extraordinary idea: that people under enormous stress, sometimes at the edge of death, experience a sense of an incorporeal being beside them, who encourages them to survive. From the response of hundreds of readers around the world, it became clear to Geiger that explorers and adventurers were not the sole recipients of such interventions. The Angel Effect is a phenomenon encountered across the world and shared by men and women, the religious and the non-religious, throughout history. When faced with physical assaults; after terrible car accidents or airplane crashes; during events like shark attacks or bank heists; or in the midst of long illnesses or persistent, gnawing loneliness, average people often encounter a benevolent being who can offer advice and provide solace--even save their lives. The Angel Effect recounts the moving personal stories of everyday people who have experienced this phenomenon and examines its spiritual implications and neurological basis. Geiger also asks whether we can train ourselves to access the effect at will. With a journalist’s eye, and inspired by both his research and his own experience with the Angel Effect during a time of great loss, Geiger creates a gripping account of a very human miracle.
