He works and lives in the ghettos of D. C. and looks like Muhammad Ali in his prime. But he also has two adorable kids of his own, and they are his own special vulnerabilities. Jezzie Flanagan is the first woman ever to hold the highly sensitive job as supervisor of the Secret Service in Washington. Blond, mysterious, seductive, she's got an outer shell that's as tough as it is beautiful. She rides her black BMW motorcycle at speeds of no less than 100 mph. What is she running from? What is her secret? Alex Cross and Jezzie Flanagan are about to have a forbidden love affair-at the worst possible time for both of them. Because Gary Soneji, who wants to commit the "crime of the century," is playing at the top of his game. Soneji has outsmarted the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police. Who will be his next victim? Book Short Summary:

‘In so many ways, although personal accounts are at times difficult to read, this is a book celebrating the victory of the human spirit over personal tragedy. It is not a book of tears and sad stories, but inspiring lives where you cheer for sexual abuse survivors who show the way with courage to rebuild their lives and not let their experiences frame or shame them.’ – Dr Darlene Barriere, Trauma and Child Abuse Counsellor and Psychologist In this confronting collection by victims of child sexual abuse, you will read not only of their horrific experiences as children, but also of their lifetime of living with the consequences and aftereffects of that abuse. There has been silence for too long, and these stories, uncomfortable though they may be to read, should be hidden no longer. The contributors need a voice. They come from various backgrounds: white, Asian, Indigenous, Jewish – male and female. It is important that their individual stories are told, and we honour their courage in giving their accounts to show the world that the scourge of child sexual abuse must be brought to light, and hopefully help our society to no longer allow it to be hidden or suppressed. The aim of this book is to to encourage other victims to seek help and redress; also useful for healers and therapists of child sex abuse survivors and other traumatised people. ‘There is a need to hear these stories, to know what did happen and what is still happening. A need to not bury our heads and say “it won't happen to me” or “I will never let that happen to MY kid.”’ – Lauren White

Book Short Summary:

“Magical prose stylist” Michael Chabon (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times) delivers a collection of essays—heartfelt, humorous, insightful, wise—on the meaning of fatherhood. For the September 2016 issue of GQ, Michael Chabon wrote a piece about accompanying his son Abraham Chabon, then thirteen, to Paris Men’s Fashion Week. Possessed with a precocious sense of style, Abe was in his element chatting with designers he idolized and turning a critical eye to the freshest runway looks of the season; Chabon Sr., whose interest in clothing stops at “thrift-shopping for vintage western shirts or Hermès neckties,” sat idly by, staving off yawns and fighting the impulse that the whole thing was a massive waste of time. Despite his own indifference, however, what gradually emerged as Chabon ferried his son to and from fashion shows was a deep respect for his son’s passion. The piece quickly became a viral sensation. With the GQ story as its centerpiece, and featuring six additional essays plus an introduction, Pops illuminates the meaning, magic, and mysteries of fatherhood as only Michael Chabon can.

Book Short Summary:

In Lori Lansens’ astonishing second novel, readers come to know and love two of the most remarkable characters in Canadian fiction. Rose and Ruby are twenty-nine-year-old conjoined twins. Born during a tornado to a shocked teenaged mother in the hospital at Leaford, Ontario, they are raised by the nurse who helped usher them into the world. Aunt Lovey and her husband, Uncle Stash, are middle-aged and with no children of their own. They relocate from the town to the drafty old farmhouse in the country that has been in Lovey’s family for generations. Joined to Ruby at the head, Rose’s face is pulled to one side, but she has full use of her limbs. Ruby has a beautiful face, but her body is tiny and she is unable to walk. She rests her legs on her sister’s hip, rather like a small child or a doll. In spite of their situation, the girls lead surprisingly separate lives. Rose is bookish and a baseball fan. Ruby is fond of trash TV and has a passion for local history. Rose has always wanted to be a writer, and as the novel opens, she begins to pen her autobiography. Here is how she begins: I have never looked into my sister’s eyes. I have never bathed alone. I have never stood in the grass at night and raised my arms to a beguiling moon. I’ve never used an airplane bathroom. Or worn a hat. Or been kissed like that. I’ve never driven a car. Or slept through the night. Never a private talk. Or solo walk. I’ve never climbed a tree. Or faded into a crowd. So many things I’ve never done, but oh, how I’ve been loved. And, if such things were to be, I’d live a thousand lives as me, to be loved so exponentially. Ruby, with her marvellous characteristic logic, points out that Rose’s autobiography will have to be Ruby’s as well — and how can she trust Rose to represent her story accurately? Soon, Ruby decides to chime in with chapters of her own. The novel begins with Rose, but eventually moves to Ruby’s point of view and then switches back and forth. Because the girls face in slightly different directions, neither can see what the other is writing, and they don’t tell each other either. The reader is treated to sometimes overlapping stories told in two wonderfully distinct styles. Rose is given to introspection and secrecy. Ruby’s style is "tell-all" — frank and decidedly sweet. We learn of their early years as the town "freaks" and of Lovey’s and Stash’s determination to give them as normal an upbringing as possible. But when we meet them, both Lovey and Stash are dead, the girls have moved back into town, and they’ve received some ominous news. They are on the verge of becoming the oldest surviving craniopagus (joined at the head) twins in history, but the question of whether they’ll live to celebrate their thirtieth birthday is suddenly impossible to answer. In Rose and Ruby, Lori Lansens has created two precious characters, each distinct and loveable in their very different ways, and has given them a world in Leaford that rings absolutely true. The girls are unforgettable. The Girls is nothing short of a tour de force.

Book Short Summary:

“.....and along came a...” begins the saga of an unlikely group of co-workers who watch too many CSI type television dramas and try their hands at forensic science. When an unsolved and gruesome crime from several decades past is featured on the evening news, Samantha, news-anchor and reticent T.V. personality, reacts rather violently to the crime scene photos, intriguing Jaych, the weather girl and collector of arachnids, and then the entire eclectic crew of 'eyewitness news'. The friends and their friends (and so on and so on) embark on a mission which takes them across the country in search of the conclusion to a tragic tale of double murder and the tiny baby who watched it all. Surprisingly, spiders provide answers along the way and aid in the dramatic finale. Or is it? The beauty of Puget Sound and it's islands provide a stunning backdrop to the investigation, as the activist population of Seattle gives flavor.

Book Short Summary:

“Damn near addictive. I loved it . . . that Patterson guy can write!” –Ron Howard “I felt I was interviewing James Patterson under the highest permissible does of sodium pentothal, the truth serum, for hours—and he spilled the whole story of his truly astonishing life.”—Bob Woodward How did a kid whose dad lived in the poorhouse become the most successful storyteller in the world? On the morning he was born, he nearly died. His dad grew up in the Pogey– the Newburgh, New York, poorhouse. He worked at a mental hospital in Massachusetts, where he met the singer James Taylor and the poet Robert Lowell. While he toiled in advertising hell, James wrote the ad jingle line “I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid.” He once watched James Baldwin and Norman Mailer square off to trade punches at a party. He’s only been in love twice. Both times are amazing. Dolly Parton once sang “Happy Birthday” to James over the phone. She calls him J.J., for Jimmy James. How did a boy from small-town New York become the world’s most successful writer? How does he do it? He has always wanted to write the kind of novel that would be read and reread so many times that the binding breaks and the book literally falls apart. As he says, “I’m still working on that one.” James Patterson by James Patterson is the most anticipated memoir of 2022.
