The magnificent conclusion of Maureen Howard's ambitious quartet of novels. Maureen Howard is one of America's most esteemed authors, beloved both for the lyricism of her writing and her dazzling intellect. The Rags of Time is a moving meditation on memory and imagination that, in its interplay of history, politics, art and life, explores the very necessity of telling stories. Focusing on a New York writer with an ailing heart as she reviews her own history and the lives she imagined in her fiction, the novel interlaces the sorrows and consolations of private moments with the undeniable memory of the public record. The result is nothing less than a deeply profound exploration of American life.

Book Short Summary:

Every winter settlers of the U.S. and Canadian Mountain West could expect to lose dozens of lives to deadly avalanches. This constant threat to trappers, miners, railway workers-and their families-forced individuals and communities to develop knowledge, share strategies, and band together as they tried to survive the extreme conditions of "avalanche country." The result of this convergence, author Diana Di Stefano argues, was a complex network of formal and informal cooperation that used disaster preparedness to engage legal action and instill a sense of regional identity among the many lives affected by these natural disasters. Encounters in Avalanche Country tells the story of mountain communities' responses to disaster over a century of social change and rapid industrialization. As mining and railway companies triggered new kinds of disasters, ideas about environmental risk and responsibility were increasingly negotiated by mountain laborers, at the elite levels among corporations, and in socially charged civil suits. Disasters became a dangerous crossroads where social spaces and ecological realities collided, illustrating how individuals, groups, communities, and corporate entities were all tangled in this web of connections between people and their environment. Written in a lively and engaging narrative style, Encounters in Avalanche Country uncovers authentic stories of survival struggles, frightening avalanches, and how local knowledge challenged legal traditions that defined avalanches as acts of god. Combining disaster, mining, railroad, and ski histories with the theme of severe winter weather, it provides a new and fascinating perspective on the settlement of the Mountain West.

Book Short Summary:

A New York Times bestselling author offers a brilliant reinvention of one of the best-known fairy tales of all time with Snow White as a gunslinger in the mythical Wild West. Forget the dark, enchanted forest. Picture instead a masterfully evoked Old West where you are more likely to find coyotes as the seven dwarves. Insert into this scene a plain-spoken, appealing narrator who relates the history of our heroine’s parents—a Nevada silver baron who forced the Crow people to give up one of their most beautiful daughters, Gun That Sings, in marriage to him. Although her mother’s life ended as hers began, so begins a remarkable tale: equal parts heartbreak and strength. This girl has been born into a world with no place for a half-native, half-white child. After being hidden for years, a very wicked stepmother finally gifts her with the name Snow White, referring to the pale skin she will never have. Filled with fascinating glimpses through the fabled looking glass and a close-up look at hard living in the gritty gun-slinging West, this is an utterly enchanting story…at once familiar and entirely new.

The celebrated author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn mixes fact and fiction in a rousing travelogue that serves as “a portrait of the artist as a young adventurer.”* In 1861, young Mark Twain found himself adrift as a newcomer in the Wild West, working as a civil servant, silver prospector, mill worker, and finally a reporter and traveling lecturer. Roughing It is the hilarious record of those early years traveling from Nevada to California to Hawaii, as Twain tried his luck at anything and everything—and usually failed. Twain’s encounters with tarantulas and donkeys, vigilantes and volcanoes, even Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, come to life with his inimitable mixture of reporting, social satire, and rollicking tall tales. Book Short Summary:

This unique book traces the history of climate change through published accounts dating back hundreds of years. It’s like readers have subscriptions to old newspapers and are reading their predecessors’ concerns firsthand. The author traces the thoughts and actions of “climate changers” from the Roman and Greek eras and presents eleven inane, outrageously costly schemes that they have proposed over the years, e.g., placing an umbrella over the Sphinx, diverting the Gulf Stream to warm the climate of Eastern Canada, or heating Chicago with underground pipes. He warns that taxpayers can expect more of the same types of costly and unnecessary schemes from contemporary climate changers in the near future. Ultimately, readers are left to decide for themselves if climate change is the most serious challenge of our generation that politicians and scientists claim it is. (Spoiler alert: it isn’t.) Simply put, history trumps science in the climate change debate.

Book Short Summary:

The interlocking lives of five Hollywood leading ladies spawn “tragedies, dark doings, jealousies, murder, passion on the grand scale” (Chicago Tribune). Charlie Caine has been to too many Hollywood funerals. The studio system is long gone, and its stars—some forgotten, some preserved for display on a late-night show—are beginning to pass on, as well. Only a few turn out for the final performance of Babe Austrian, a peroxide-blond beauty whose red-hot talkies changed the way America thought about sex. As he gazes into her coffin, Caine remembers Babe as she was: a dynamite beauty with secrets that could have burned Hollywood to the ground. In Babe and four other interlocking novellas, Caine recalls the leading ladies of long-lost Hollywood: Belinda, whose daughter was as cruel as she was lovely; Claire, who would do anything to stay in the public eye; April, fragile, beautiful, and mad; and Maude, Hollywood’s most respected matron, whose happy marriage had a lie at its heart. Charlie Caine knows where cinema’s bodies are buried, and he’s anxious to start digging.

Book Short Summary:

This is the annotated edition including a rare and extensive biographical essay on the author, as well as an essay by Edgar Allan Poe on Hawthorne's tale-writing. In the year 1852 "The Snow Image and Other Twice-Told Tales" was published. It is dedicated in an interesting preface to Horatio Bridge, and is made up of tales and sketches gathered from periodicals. It is a little inferior in general to the other collections, though the title story is done with a wonderfully fine and delicate touch, and "Ethan Brand "has a great deal of power. This is written from the hint for a story on the unpardonable sin, which occurs in the "Note-Books," the setting being suggested by the lime-kilns in Berkshire, alluded to in the first volume of the "American Note-Books, "September 7, 1838. The other noticeable sketches of the book are " The Canterbury Pilgrims, "a story of the Shakers, "The Great Stone Face, "a tale of the Profile in the Franconia Notch, and the curious sketch "Major Molineux." "Old News" is made up from some old Boston newspapers, issued before and during the Revolution. "Old Ticonderoga" is one of the slight reminiscences of travel. "A Bell's Biography "and "Main Street" have the peculiar touch that marks all the sketches of Puritan life.

____________________________ What's it really like to give it all up and follow your dream? The follow-up to Up With the Larks, and the second volume in the heartwarming, laugh-out-loud true story of Tessa, who moved from the London rat-race to become a postie in rural Cornwall. Tessa and her husband are delighted when a new young couple arrive in the village fresh from the city - just as they once did. However what looks such a promising new friendship turns to a nightmare, as these are people who think money can buy them acceptance - and the village is soon in quiet revolt. Tessa finds herself in the thick of it - and realises that she has grown very strong roots in the community in the two years she has been in Cornwall. Like so many in the country, she has to think about turning her house into a source of income in the summer months. Having finally got the place up to scratch, she and her family are wondering whether to camp for a couple of months when they are asked to take over a B&B owned by friends of friends. Tessa is bubbly, outgoing - but quite inexperienced at being a landlady. She muddles through only with the generous help of the 'customers' on her postal round. ____________________________ Written with her usual warmth and good humour, Tessa Hainsworth enchants us again with her stories of life as a newcomer to 'deep' Cornwall and makes us dwell on the true value and meaning of 'home'.

Book Short Summary:

Katherine Mansfield has been widely recognised as one of the key authors of her generation, continuing to influence literary modernism and the short story genre through her nomadic existence, colonial perspective, eclectic interests and impressive range of literary acquaintances. This volume utilises these seemingly endless avenues for critical exploration, analysing Mansfield’s influences, including the familial, historical and geographical as well as literary and artistic approaches. Some connections are well established and acknowledged, some controversial, many still undiscovered. This volume brings a fresh collection of original viewpoints on Katherine Mansfield’s life and work, both of which, in her own case, are frequently indistinguishable. It investigates her fascinating connection with Poland which is explored in a complex and detailed way for the first time; suggests new or revised views on her connections to other English and American writers; and finally examines some of the aspects of her writing process, her engagement with the arts, imagination, memories and her constructions of different kinds of space.

Book Short Summary:

A sparkling, inventive debut novel inspired by Sir John Franklin's grand — but ultimately failed — quest to discover the Northwest Passage and by his extraordinary wife, Lady Jane. Originally published in Quebec as Du bon usage des etoiles, Dominique Fortier's debut On the Proper Use of Stars is as fresh and imaginative as anything published in recent years. It weaves together the voices of Francis Crozier, Sir John Franklin's second in command, who turns a sceptical eye on the grandiose ambitions and hubris of his leader, and of Lady Jane Franklin and her niece Sophia, both driven to uncommon actions by love and by frustration as months then years pass with no word from the expedition. Fortier skilfully accents the main narratives with overheard conversations and snippets from letters and documents that bring two entirely different worlds — the frozen Arctic and busy Victorian London — alive.

Book Short Summary:

The Oxford Handbook of British Romanticism offers a comprehensive guide to the literature and thought of the Romantic period, and an overview of the latest research on this topic. Written by a team of international experts, the Handbook analyses all aspects of the Romantic movement, pinpointing its different historical phases and analysing the intellectual and political currents which shaped them. It gives particular attention to devolutionary trends, exploring the English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish strands in 'British' Romanticism and assessing the impact of the constitutional changes that brought into being the 'United Kingdom' at a time of revolutionary turbulence and international conflict. It also gives extensive coverage to the publishing and reception history of Romantic writing, highlighting the role of readers, reviewers, publishers, and institutions in shaping Romantic literary culture and transmitting its ideas and values. Divided into ten sections, each containing four or five chapters, the Handbook covers key themes and concepts in Romantic studies as well as less chartered topics such as freedom of speech, literature and drugs, Romantic oratory, and literary uses of dialect. All the major male and female Romantic authors are included along with numerous lesser-known writers, the emphasis throughout being on the diversity of Romantic writing and the complexities and internal divisions of the culture that sustained it. The volume strikes a balance between familiarity and novelty to provide an accessible guide to current thinking and a conceptual reorganization of this fast-moving field.

Book Short Summary:

Compiled by a prominent abolitionist Theodore Dwight Weld, American Slavery As It Is combines information taken from witnesses, and from active and former slave owners, to generate a condemnation of slavery from both those who observed it and those who perpetuated it. The narrative describes the appalling day-to-day conditions of the over 2,700,000 men, women and children in slavery in the United States. Weld demonstrates how even prisoners--in the United States and in other countries--were significantly better fed than American slaves. Readers will find one of the most meticulous records of slave life available in this text. Unlike personal slave narratives, which focus on a single man or woman's experience, American Slavery details the overall conditions of slaves across multiple states and several years. Book Short Summary:

Walking after midnight Deneb 4, 4217 David was staring. “You’re a masterpiece, Sissy-a real work of art. Beauty and the beast all rolled into one…our very own femme fatale? “You have two things to remember lest you go AWOL on us. One- you’re body is real. You’re a genetically engineered superwoman. Your lifespan, without enhancement is five centuries. So you have something to live for. I’ve pressed the Overlord council to waive entirely the charges for treason that had been pressed against you from your previous incarnation. Secondly, well, there’s this.” He tossed a small purple cube over on the bed. “I suggest you don’t look at it until you’ve given yourself a few days to acclimate yourself to the real universe again. It’s rather disturbing. “We’ve commandeered you a small ship, nicely appointed I might add. Aspects of your former self will start to begin to come back into your awareness over time. Yes…you’re sensing it now. Yes dear, you were a woman.” Suddenly they were not alone. Lourdes was standing in the middle of the room. “Well David, can’t tear yourself away from her now that we’ve restored her can you? Tsk, tsk, love never dies, after all this time. She betrayed you once, and now here she lays in full glory. Only you would have given her another chance. Off with her then! The transfer is complete; she’s in the flesh now, going on and kiss her goodbye.” Cicero looked over and saw a flash of annoyance in David’s eye, but the sardonic and cold heart that never melted remained on the lips. Lisa looked at the cube. Then she got up and walked over to a wall length mirror by a sink. She was tall, strawberry blonde (her hair could change color at will she realized suddenly, one of her powers), She was elegant and athletic. Back in the saddle it seemed, and ready for blood. Outside the window the towers of Deneb 4 gleamed in the sunshine.
