Book Excerpt :

In the third installment of the Dorothy vs. Alice Trilogy, Alice must face off against the Tin Man, who calls himself the Tin Knight. When Alice lived in Wonderland with Dorothy, there were good qualities about Dorothy. They were such good friends then. But Dorothy has changed. Now she’s the sadistic, manipulative chief of the munchkin tribes, who summoned a tornado to bring Alice back to the magical realms. Dorothy has promised to send Alice back to England only if she agrees to duel the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Knight one at a time. Dorothy keeps trying to woo Alice. Dorothy even wears an engagement ring on a necklace that she plans to someday give to her. Unfortunately, Dorothy is a vicious psycho who can only spell trouble. The scary thing, though, is that Alice fears that Dorothy’s ways may be rubbing off on her. Sometimes Dorothy’s depraved acts do have a certain charm, she must admit. This time around, Alice finds herself facing off against the Tin Knight. She’s tasked with fighting him to the death after a series of challenges, all while having to deal with Dorothy and her drama. Book Short Summary:

Dorothy (of Oz) and Alice (of Wonderland) used to be lovers. But that was in the past. Sometimes though, the past has a way of coming back to haunt you. In Alice’s case, that way is a tornado summoned to snatch her from the Outside World and bring her back to Munchkinland. Alice has absolutely no intention of getting back together with Dorothy. You see, Dorothy has changed…into a pervert, a sadistic chief of the munchkin tribes, and an all around unreasonable beast! She has the audacity to ask Alice to rule by her side, keeps talking about magical sexual powers that Alice possesses… Alice wants no part of it, demands to be sent back home, and that’s when the completely unreasonable Dorothy throws Alice into some sort of twisted game that’s designed to end in a duel to the death with the Scarecrow! You wouldn’t think that would be the way Dorothy would want to woo Alice, but it is. Dorothy seems to think it’ll somehow prove how much she loves Alice, in some sort of twisted logic. See, Dorothy thinks of it as a heartfelt sacrifice of one of her favorite servants to Alice and feels that as she and Alice go through the challenges of the game together, they’ll somehow end up bonding. Alice doesn’t want to be hurt by Dorothy again and really wants nothing more to do with her. But despite all her protestations, psycho Dorothy manipulates the situation so Alice has no choice but to go along with the game. Alice wonders what she ever saw in her. She hopes she won’t end up having to kill her former crush. Book Short Summary:

Alice in Jamesland, the first biography of Alice Howe Gibbens James wife of the psychologist and philosopher William James, and sister-in-law of novelist Henry James was made possible by the rediscovery of hundreds of her letters and papers thought to be destroyed in the 1960s. Encompassing European travel, Civil War profiteering, suicide, a stormy courtship, séances, psychedelic mushrooms, the death of a child, and an enduring love story, Alice in Jamesland is a portrait of a nineteenth-century upper-middle-class marriage, told often through Alice s own letters and made all the more dynamic because of her role in the James family. Susan E. Gunter positions Alice as a lens through which to view the family, as a perceptive observer privy to knowledge of relationships to which those outside the James family were not. She also portrays Alice as the cohesive factor that held the Jameses together, bridging the gap between brothers William and Henry and acting as the stable center for a highly gifted but eccentric family. An idealistic, serious young woman, Alice was uniquely suited to join this clan, bringing psychological soundness and unshakeable personal conviction to her union with the Jameses. Her life s story provides a fascinating view of one of America s most important intellectual dynasties and offers new insights into the lives of nineteenth-century women.

Will you answer this question in the same way that you will answer my next question? Done? Good! Will you buy this book?. Inside you will discover that your only truthful answer to this second question is affirmative. Logic has made some men rich. Inside this book you will learn of John Eck (who debated Luther in 1519). He Will you answer this question in the same way that you will answer my next question? Done? Good! Will you buy this book? Inside you will discover that your only truthful answer to this second question is affirmative. A Cabinet of Philosophical Curiosities is a colorful collection of puzzles and paradoxes, both historical and contemporary, by philosopher Roy Sorensen. Taking inspiration from Ian Stewart's Professor Stewart's Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities, which assembled interesting "maths" from outside the classroom into a miscellany of marvels, these puzzles are ready to be enjoyed independently but gain mutual support when read in clusters. The volume ranges from simple examples to anomalous anomalies, considers data that seems to confirm a generalization while lowering its probability, and argues that we are doomed to believe infinitely many contradictions-and that the pain of contradictions can be profoundly stimulating.Inside this book you will learn of John Eck, who debated Luther in 1519. He devised a sequence of contracts that sidestepped usury laws, and German bankers made a fortune from this Triple Contract. Sorensen also recounts how Voltaire set himself up for life by exploiting a fallacy in the construction of a Parisian lottery. There is logic for altruists, too. You will discover how General Benjamin Butler used other-centric reasoning to protect runaway slaves. There are historical snapshots of logic in action, and the book contains tributes to Lewis Carroll, Arthur Prior, and Peter Geach. In addition to short essays, there are dialogues, cures and insults.

Book Short Summary:

Biblical Limits is a new series which brings to the traditional field of Biblical Studies literary criticism, anthropology and gender-based approaches, thus reaching new ways of understanding Biblical texts. Jesus Framed is a collection of essays on reading the gospel of Mark. It uses literary theory, most notably the writings of Roland Barthes, to examine some of the difficulties in the text of Mark. A series of close readings of the gospel of Mark is compared to similar texts, both biblical and otherwise. Drawing on Mark's famous phrase that "to those who are outside all comes through parables" (Mark 4:11-12), Jesus Framed explores the boundaries between insiders and outsiders, those who can and those who cannot find a meaning in the text.

Book Short Summary:

"How do we move actors into the less accessible regions of themselves and release hotter, more dangerous, and less literal means of approaching a role?" Superscenes are a revolutionary new mode of teaching and rehearsal, allowing the actor to discover and utilize the primal energies underlying dramatic texts. In Acting, Archetype, and Neuroscience Jane Drake Brody draws upon a lifetime’s experience in the theatre, alongside the best insights into pedagogical practice in the field, the work of philosophers and writers who have focused on myth and archetype, and the latest insights of neuroscience. The resulting interdisciplinary, exciting volume works to: Mine the essentials of accepted acting theory while finding ways to access more primally-based human behavior in actors Restore a focus on storytelling that has been lost in the rush to create complex characters with arresting physical and vocal lives Uncover the mythical bones buried within every piece of dramatic writing; the skeletal framework upon which hangs the language and drama of the play itself Focus on the actor’s body as the only place where the conflict inherent in drama can be animated. Acting, Archetype, and Neuroscience weaves together a wealth of seemingly disparate performance methods, exciting actors to imaginatively and playfully take risks they might otherwise avoid. A radical new mixture of theory and practice by a highly respected teacher of acting, this volume is a must-read for students and performance practitioners alike.

Book Short Summary:

Emerging in several different versions during the author's lifetime, Lewis Carroll's Alice novels have a publishing history almost as magical and mysterious as the stories themselves. Zoe Jaques and Eugene Giddens offer a detailed and nuanced account of the initial publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and investigate how their subsequent transformations through print, illustration, film, song, music videos, and even stamp-cases and biscuit tins affected the reception of these childhood favourites. The authors consider issues related to the orality of the original tale and its impact on subsequent transmission, the differences between the manuscripts and printed editions, and the politics of writing and publishing for children in the 1860s. In addition, they take account of Carroll's own responses to the books' popularity, including his writing of major adaptations and a significant body of meta-textual commentary, and his reactions to the staging of Alice in Wonderland. Attentive to the child reader, how changing notions of childhood identity and needs affected shifting narratives of the story, and the representation of the child's body by various illustrators, the authors also make a significant contribution to childhood studies.

Book Short Summary:

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" – Alice, a girl of seven years, is feeling bored and drowsy while sitting on the riverbank with her elder sister. She then notices a talking, clothed White Rabbit with a pocket watch run past. She follows it down a rabbit hole when suddenly she falls a long way to a curious hall with many locked doors of all sizes and gets stuck in a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course, structure, characters, and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" – Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. There she finds that, just like a reflection, everything is reversed, including logic (running helps you remain stationary, walking away from something brings you towards it, chessmen are alive, nursery rhyme characters exist, etc).

Alice in Wonderland The bestseller book of Adventure Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland LEWIS CARROLL“So many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.” When Alice catches a glimpse of a smartly-dressed talking rabbit on the riverbank, she follows him into a rabbit hole, tumbling down after him into a deeply bizarre subterranean world inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic beings. As she wanders through these strange new lands trying to get back home, she encounters a varied cast of characters, from the mischievous Cheshire Cat to the quite possibly insane Mad Hatter, to the wise, hookah-smoking Caterpillar, and they are all just as curious about her as she is about them. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland explores themes of growing up, mortality, and curiosity through the unique, innocent perspective of a child. Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was a 19th-century English scholar, mathematician, and author. He was most famous for his novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and later its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, both of which forever changed the landscape of Victorian literature and remain beloved staples of children’s literature to this day. Book Short Summary:

Laurence Talairach-Vielmas explores Victorian representations of femininity in narratives that depart from mainstream realism, from fairy tales by George MacDonald, Lewis Carroll, Christina Rossetti, Juliana Horatia Ewing, and Jean Ingelow, to sensation novels by Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Rhoda Broughton, and Charles Dickens. Feminine representation, Talairach-Vielmas argues, is actually presented in a hyper-realistic way in such anti-realistic genres as children's literature and sensation fiction. In fact, it is precisely the clash between fantasy and reality that enables the narratives to interrogate the real and re-create a new type of realism that exposes the normative constraints imposed to contain the female body. In her exploration of the female body and its representations, Talairach-Vielmas examines how Victorian fantasies and sensation novels deconstruct and reconstruct femininity; she focuses in particular on the links between the female characters and consumerism, and shows how these serve to illuminate the tensions underlying the representation of the Victorian ideal.

This work of fiction, was inspired by an actual case where the Kentucky Bar Association investigated a prominent lawyer for merely writing a letter to the Kentucky Legislature which was critical of a ruling of the Legislative Ethics Commission. The Ministry is a secret government agency and their actions are not subject to disclosure. The legal rules cited actually exist and provide a warning to those who create such rules of the need for reform, not only to protect lawyers, but to protect the public who consume legal services and expect their lawyer to have the right to fearlessly represent them. This case was only made public when the attorney, John M. Berry Jr. and the ACLU, filed a federal lawsuit. That case is currently on appeal to the 6th. U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Alice is a member of the Ky. Supreme Court. She fights the Ministry of Ethics, an agency of the Courts which investigates and sanctions attorneys for any conduct they find to be offensive. This book was published in April of 2011. In November of 2011 the chief KBA ethics prosecutor was fired. The Bar Association has never given a reason for her discharge.

Book Short Summary:

This is the original version of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with Carroll's own original illustrations and John Tenniel's original illustrations. It was hand-written by Lewis Carroll for Alice Liddell between 1862 and 1864. The tale was first told by Carroll on 4 July 1862 to the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, on a river boat trip. At Christmas 1886, the manuscript was published in a facsimile edition. This edition is certainly well worth reading, although it is shorter than the final form of the story-the later "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" being about twice the length of the original "Alice's Adventures under Ground". Lewis Carroll (1832 – 1898), was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer.

Book Short Summary:

First published in 1865, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland began as a story told to Alice Liddell and her two sisters on a boating trip in July 1862. The novel follows Alice down a rabbit-hole and into a world of strange and wonderful characters who constantly turn everything upside down with their mind-boggling logic, word play, and fantastic parodies. Like the first, this second edition includes Carroll’s earlier story Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, which allows readers to trace the revisions and to compare Carroll’s own illustrations in the original with the famous John Tenniel illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This edition also includes new appendix material: George MacDonald writing on the fantastic, the eighteenth-century children’s story Goody Two-Shoes, a section on film and television adaptations of Alice, and new illustrations.

Book Short Summary:

This landmark volume is the first to bring together leading scholarship on children’s and young adult literature from three intersecting disciplines: Education, English, and Library and Information Science. Distinguished by its multidisciplinary approach, it describes and analyzes the different aspects of literary reading, texts, and contexts to illuminate how the book is transformed within and across different academic figurations of reading and interpreting children’s literature. Part one considers perspectives on readers and reading literature in home, school, library, and community settings. Part two introduces analytic frames for studying young adult novels, picturebooks, indigenous literature, graphic novels, and other genres. Chapters include commentary on literary experiences and creative production from renowned authors and illustrators. Part three focuses on the social contexts of literary study, with chapters on censorship, awards, marketing, and literary museums. The singular contribution of this Handbook is to lay the groundwork for colleagues across disciplines to redraw the map of their separately figured worlds, thus to enlarge the scope of scholarship and dialogue as well as push ahead into uncharted territory.
