Book Excerpt :

Alice in Wonderland' is the best known work of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 - 1898), better known by his pen name, 'Lewis Carroll'. Telling the tale of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by surreal and anthropomorphic creatures, the book was a huge commercial success on its initial publication in 1865. It was followed by its sequel, 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There', in 1871. The books play at the heart of logical problems and literary nonsense – giving the narrative lasting popularity with adults and children alike. Originally published in 1929, this edition of the 'Alice in Wonderland' story is accompanied by the stunning artwork of George Soper. Soper (1870 - 1942), was an etcher and painter, widely known for his rustic scenes and lively animals. His delicate colour plates and beautifully detailed line drawing compliment the story perfectly – adding even more dream-like magic to Alice's fantastical realm. Soper's illustrations and Lewis Carroll's text are presented side-by-side, so that the two may be better appreciated. This book forms part of our 'Pook Press' imprint, celebrating the golden age of illustration in children's literature.

Book Short Summary:

This book is 'Villeneuve's Original Beauty and the Beast' story, first translated into English by J. R Planché. Although it contains the familiar plots and themes of more recent shortened versions of the tale, Villleneuve's original piece of story telling explores the back story of both Belle and the Beast. The Beast was a prince who lost his father at a young age, and whose mother had to wage war to defend his kingdom. Belle’s story reveals her true parentage and her life is threatened. This edition was originally published in 1858 and contains two beautiful engravings by Edward Corbould and the Brothers Dalziel. Villeneuve was a French author influenced by Madame d’Aulnoy, Charles Perrault and various female intellectuals. La Belle et La Bête was first published in 1740 published in La Jeune Américaine, et Les Contes Marins. Planché himself was a British dramatist and antiquary, chiefly responsible for introducing historically accurate costume into nineteenth century British theatre. His interest in folklore stemmed from such endeavours – and his passion for the tales as well as mastery of the French language is apparent in this text. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's classics and fairy tales - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Reading Enid Blyton

  • Pdf File: reading-enid-blyton.pdf

Book Short Summary:

Enid Blyton has been disparaged by her critics since the 1950s and her stock is still low, though this has not deterred readers. New editions of her work have been published regularly since her death in 1968. Recently, there have also been stage and television adaptations of her Malory Towers books, while other authors have continued to write stories based on her characters. There are also Famous Five parodies, which rely on readers’ familiarity with the series. A continuing affection for her work is apparent, though it is not always clear whether this comes from parents or their children. Reading Enid Blyton places the author’s work in its cultural and historical context. The book examines a sample of her vast output, looking at five recurring themes: a sense of place, a sense of period, a sense of childhood, a sense of class and a sense of fantasy. A survey of changing attitudes towards Blyton reveals contrasting ways of looking at her work and raises the question whether she was as reactionary a writer as she appeared.

Book Short Summary:

This is a newly edited revision of Albert Howard's important text on organic farming and gardening, and the central role of humus in maintaining soil health and fertility. No single generation has the right to exhaust the soil from which humanity must draw its sustenance. Modern agricultural practices, with their emphasis on chemicals, poisons, and toxins, lead to the impoverishment and death of the soil. THE SOIL AND HEALTH is a detailed analysis of the vital role of humus and compost in soil health — and the importance of soil health to the health of crops and the humans who eat them. The author is keenly aware of the dead end which awaits humanity if we insist on growing our food using artificial fertilisers and poisons. Albert Howard (1873-1947) was one of the leaders of the British organics movement in the mid-twentieth century. He was the first westerner to document and publish research on traditional techniques of agriculture, including Indian and Chinese farming and management of the soil.
