Book Short Summary:

A young man’s quest to keep his hometown’s paper mill from closing turns into an odyssey across a rural upstate New York county. One man’s affliction is another’s gift, and Kenny Hopewell’s “special gift” is a terrible memory and virtually no sense of direction. Entrusted by a family friend to deliver a plea for help that might keep his hometown mill from closing, Kenny misses his ride and sets out on foot across an isolated rural area between Lake Ontario and the Adirondacks. Along the way he meets and comes to terms with some of the denizens of this lonely landscape—the Casimir family, who survive on the outskirts of the law; Johnny Percy, a Vietnam veteran still defending his family’s abandoned homestead; and Gunnar Molshoc, a well-driller and “witcher”—refugees, like him, from the decay of rural America in the 1980s. Meanwhile, several characters at the local college are struggling to define the college’s role in the mill fight and to rescue the soul of higher education. John Harlan is an instructor attempting to write a meaningful dissertation that won’t threaten his chances at tenure; Ernest Guppy’s notion of himself as a political comic is driving his wife off the deep end; and college president Baxter McAdam and his administrative vice president are locked in a withering campaign to force each other out of power. The novel’s setting, a fictional county in upstate New York, is like a braided rug: smooth on the top, all knots underneath. Chained to a dying farm economy and losing its youth to greener pastures, it’s the sort of place where refugees from Brooklyn might live next to Amish farmers, who might live next to Italian millworkers, who might live next to a bigot whose house was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. Like so many rural American communities, it has the feel of a self-inflicted wound, and as Kenny comes to understand, sometimes you have to feel pain just to know you’re still alive. “The book is a series of at times exquisitely written encounters … Petersen is a storyteller and a literary craftsman who has reached high in this effort. With his talent, who can blame him?” —Thousand Islands Life “Ray Petersen’s The Middle of Everywhere is an intricate and cunningly crafted Odyssey through the troubled small towns of the northeast. It’s a keenly observed, taut, often very funny novel, stitched together by the wanderings of a wonderful, impaired Odysseus you won’t soon forget. I liked it a lot.” — Thomas Cobb, author of Crazy Heart: A Novel “Ray Petersen’s vested epic, The Middle of Everywhere, does everything well. It is a billion-footed beast in running shoes. Swift, sensitive, and enduring, the novel is breathless in its transparent sustained dream of realistic replication of the blue blue-collar worlds of the steel and diploma mills. Run, run for all your lives!” — Michael Martone, author of Four for a Quarter: Fictions “In his follow-up to the spectacularly funny and moving Cowkind, Ray Petersen has created another novel set in rural upstate New York that’s sure to make readers laugh and cry and wish for a better way to care for each other. The Middle of Everywhere gives us that necessary compass point as we journey across time and space with Kenny in an attempt to save the Alta paper mill. Once again Petersen proves to be a storyteller of unparalleled wisdom and kindness as he helps us find our True North with characters we’ll keep dreaming about long after the book’s final page.” — Todd Davis, author of The Least of These

Book Short Summary:

Read the book that's getting conversion therapy banned in Canada Winner of the Independent Book Publisher Award, Finalist for the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction and the Saints and Sinners Emerging Writer Award. "Unforgettable... This book is appallingly appropriate in these times." — FOREWORD REVIEWS This resonant and acclaimed memoir recounts the six years that the author spent in a bizarre form of conversion therapy that attempted to "cure" him of his homosexuality, and the inspiring story of how he cast out shame and reclaimed his life. Kept with other patients in a cult-like home in British Columbia, Canada, Peter Gajdics was under the authority of a dominating, rogue psychiatrist who controlled his patients, in part, by creating and exploiting a false sense of family. Juxtaposed against his parents' tormented past–his mother's incarceration and escape from a communist concentration camp in post-World War II Yugoslavia, and his father's upbringing as an orphan in war-torn Hungary, The Inheritance of Shame explores the universal themes of childhood trauma, oppression, and intergenerational pain. “DEEPLY MOVING." — THE ADVOCATE “RAW AND UNFLINCHING" — KIRKUS REVIEWS “A HERO’S JOURNEY IN WHICH ANY READER, GAY OR STRAIGHT, CAN FIND INSPIRATION.” — LAMBDA LITERARY FOUNDATION All over the United States and Canada, districts, cities and states are banning conversion, ex-gay and reparative therapies. A powerful example of "healing through memoir," this book offers the most complete and compelling reason for those bans to date. A groundbreaking memoir, The Inheritance of Shame offers insights into overcoming all kinds of shame, especially that which has trickled down from previous generations, and into the complicated but all-too-worthwhile process of forgiveness.

Book Short Summary:

During the 1990s, as New York was transformed from a crumbling city into a vibrant metropolis, the New York Mets were anything but vibrant. Beginning in 1999, the team waged a battle to recapture the hearts of New York baseball fans from their crosstown rivals, and they came closer to succeeding than anyone dared dream. At the same time, mayor Rudy Giuliani—architect of this new New York and those rivals’ biggest cheerleader—was engaged in his own battles to win a Senate seat and to save his sagging legacy as savior of the city. Yells For Ourselves chronicles the 1999 and 2000 seasons of the New York Mets, and explores how local and national politics were interwoven with the obsessions of a baseball-mad city. It paints a picture of this forgotten time in the history of baseball and New York, when new ballparks, rapid expansion, and “enhanced training methods” caused a home run explosion; when rising free agent salaries separated teams into the Haves and Have Nots; and when a politico’s answer to the question Mets or Yankees? could make global headlines. Above all, Yells For Ourselves captures what happened when an underdog struggled to find an identity in a city with no room left for lovable losers.

Book Short Summary:

Mount Rushmore, located in the Black Hills of Keystone, South Dakota, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States. The face of the mountain features 60-foot heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It depicts four of the greatest men our country has ever known. In recent years, it has become fashionable for sports fans to select the Mount Rushmore of their franchise’s history. For some franchise’s, which have been around for 100+ years, it can be a daunting task. Even for younger franchises, such as the New York Mets, picking a Mount Rushmore can be a challenge. Mostly because fans always seem to favor players that they have seen play—leading older and younger fans to differ on who belongs carved on that fictional mountain in Queens. In 2015, Major League Baseball announced its decision for each team’s Mount Rushmore. For the Mets, voters chose Keith Hernandez, Mike Piazza, Tom Seaver, and David Wright. No one would argue that Tom Seaver is on the franchise’s Mount Rushmore. He was, after all, “The Franchise.” Some might even argue that the Mets’ Mount Rushmore is Tom Seaver four times! However, that not-withstanding, when it comes to rounding out the other three players, did MLB get it right?? Thankfully, Mount Rushmore of the New York Mets tackles such a question. Covering the team by decade, author Brett Topel share the best players from the team’s almost sixty-year history. From Jerry Koosman and Ed Kranepool, Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, to Edgardo Alfonzo and Jose Reyes, each decade is covered, reliving the highs and lows of the Metropolitans. So whether you remember the Miracle Mets, the Amazin’ run of 1986, or the almost of the 2000s, Mount Rushmore of the New York Mets breaks down the fan favorites who earned their prominence in the Polo Grounds, Shea Stadium, and Citi Field.

The series begins with Dark Ages Clan Novel 1: Nosferatu and ends with Dark Ages Clan Novel 13: Tzimisce. These novels, unlike the original Clan Novel Series, are chronological, happening one after the other rather than overlapping. Dark Ages Clan Novel #5 Lasombra: The Fate of the Second Rome The situation in Constantinople has degenerated into sheer chaos, as vampires of every stripe prey on the ruined metropolis. Lucita, the young envoy of Clan Lasombra, is caught in the middle and cut off from her elders in Europe. Alone, she faces the impossible task of making the city her own, lest she become another victim in the War of Princes. Dark Ages: Lasombra continues the epic thirteen-part series of Dark Ages Clan Novels, chronicling a vast conflict among the vampires of the Middle Ages.

Book Short Summary:

A group of strangers risk death along the New York State Thruway to save a soldier from a burning truck. The true story, as told by football legend Jim Brown, of how the number 44 rose to prominence at Syracuse University. The beautiful yet tragic connection between Vice President Joseph Biden and Syracuse. The impossible account of how Eric Carle, one of the world’s great children’s authors, found his way to a childhood friend through a photograph taken in Syracuse more than eighty years ago. All these tales can be found in The Soul of Central New York, a collection of columns by Sean Kirst that spans almost a quarter-century. During his long career as a writer for the Syracuse Post-Standard, Kirst won some of the most prestigious honors in journalism, including the Ernie Pyle Award, given annually to one American writer who best captures the hopes and dreams of everyday Americans. For Kirst, his canvas is Syracuse, an upstate city of staggering beauty and profound struggle. In this book, readers will find a nuanced explanation of how Syracuse is intertwined with the spiritual roots of the Six Nations, as well as a soliloquy from a grieving father whose son was lost to violence on the streets. In these emotional contradictions—in the resilience, love, and heart-break of its people—Kirst offers a vivid portrait of his city and, in the end, gives readers hope.

Book Short Summary:

Game of My Life New York Mets, now newly updated, takes a personal look inside the biggest moments of the Mets’ greatest and most beloved players, from journeymen to superstars. Their most unforgettable games paint a picture of Mets history, as the franchise morphed from a dismal (though lovable) expansion team in 1962 to World Series Champions in 1969 and 1986 and then back to basement dwellers before meeting the Yankees in the 2000 Subway Series, and the Royals in a surprise appearance in the 2015 World Series. Book Short Summary:

Although it was, for decades, by far the wealthiest country in Latin America, and, despite having the world’s largest oil reserves, Venezuela is a failed state. How did the country fall into this situation? How it can get out of it? This book analyzes and answers these questions, the most pressing asked by all those who think about the current situation of Venezuela. It concentrates its diagnosis on the 40 years of populism under democracy that allowed Hugo Chavez to reach power, and which resulted in the dramatic impoverishing of Venezuela. Chavismo is analyzed carefully, and the book also considers the effect of global situations on the Venezuela economy.

Book Short Summary:

Beneath Venezuelan soil lies an ocean of crude—the world’s largest reserves—an oil patch that shaped the nature of the global energy business. Unfortunately, a dysfunctional anti-American, leftist government controls this vast resource and has used its wealth to foster voter support, ultimately wreaking economic havoc. Crude Nation reveals the ways in which this mismanagement has led to Venezuela’s economic ruin and turned the country into a cautionary tale for the world. Raúl Gallegos, a former Caracas-based oil correspondent, paints a picture both vivid and analytical of the country’s economic decline, the government’s foolhardy economic policies, and the wrecked lives of Venezuelans. Without transparency, the Venezuelan government uses oil money to subsidize life for its citizens in myriad unsustainable ways, while regulating nearly every aspect of day-to-day existence in Venezuela. This has created a paradox in which citizens can fill up the tanks of their SUVs for less than one American dollar while simultaneously enduring nationwide shortages of staples such as milk, sugar, and toilet paper. Gallegos’s insightful analysis shows how mismanagement has ruined Venezuela again and again over the past century and lays out how Venezuelans can begin to fix their country, a nation that can play an important role in the global energy industry.

Book Short Summary:

Surviving the Unimaginable By Ruth Janie Webb He beat me with a hammer. He beat me with a bat. He strangled me until all of my breath had gone and I was left for dead. He shoved the barrel of a 22 riffle in my mouth and told me hed blow my brains out and kill the children too. So when he spit on me, bit me, slapped me or kicked me, it didnt seem so bad. Self-esteem? What self-esteem! As bad as the physical abuse was, the mental abuse seemed almost worse. My husband would brag tome that he had other women that were prettier, smarter and more desirable. I was left alone with the children for days at a time. He would leave because the house was too noisy. Hed leave when the bills were due. Hed leave to visit those other women. If I dared ask where hed been, hed beat me yet again. Women who stay in abusive relationships are afraid. Only God can deliver. It takes God to give a woman the strength and ability she needs to step away from this type of demonic, controlling relationship. I know the excuses. I used them myself. I dont have any where to go. There is always somewhere to go. I dont want to leave my stuff. Baby, when youre really ready and you have had enough, you will leave everything. When I left my first husband, I left everything in that house. I went to work and never returned. I only had the clothes on my back. My babies need their daddy. If you dont seek help and leave that abusive relationship, you and your babies will end up dead. He will kill me if I leave. He will kill you if you stay. He will change. No, he wont! Not without Gods help. He has to want Gods help for himself, not because you want him to want God. He said he was sorry. He is sorry if he put his hands on you. He is a coward living in the shell of a man. He loves me. Love is not abusive. He only does it when hes drunk. Then he needs to stop drinking. These are just a few of our excuses. No one deserves to be beaten, no one. Not for any reason. Stop blaming yourself. I thank God that He was with me and allowed me to make it out alive. It was only His divine protection and love that allowed us to make it out alive. You must stop endangering and damaging yourself and your children. Once I gave my life to God, I no longer had low self esteem. I picked up my head and walked in who God said I was. I survived the unimaginable and you can too. Now instead of dwelling on the pain and regret of 29 1/2 years of marriage that nearly killed me and my children, I am using the experience to help others. God is using me to encourage and minister to both men and women who are in abusive relationships. My life is a miracle. My mess had been turned into a message of hope and healing. I pray you allow God to do the same for you.
