Book Excerpt :

Ageless Spy is a literary novel that flows smoothly through the protagonist's life. The narrative is not meant to confound the reader with overtly clever twists, violence or sex. Ageless Spy simply tells a story about lives that intertwine amid the Second World War and bond closer together after the war's conclusion. The quiet narrative introduces Carl Coles and creates a wonderful tapestry of suspense and intrigue as the story takes the reader on unsuspecting paths. The narrative unfolds slowly as an aged Carl Coles and his wife Maureen begin an uncharacteristic reminiscence of a time long ago. The cozy warmth of their Halifax kitchen soon gives way to a young British merchant seaman who happens upon a tiny Halifax cafe decades before in 1939. Carl Coles puts aside his personal life and sacrifices himself for his country for years. Follow his career and find out why he became the premier agent assassin of the British Secret Service. Find out how this typically gentle man could separate career from his personal life and still maintain his humanity. Quiet and introverted on one hand while on the other hand an efficient killing machine. An oxymoron to be sure, but they both adequately describe Carl Coles to whom we are introduced as a nineteen-year-old merchant seaman in 1939. As hard as Carl tries to escape the spy business and in spite of numerous efforts to consummate his distant love for the Canadian woman, both actions fail miserably. Throughout all of his efforts, Carl Coles hones his skills as an elite and silent killer. In the words of a beta-reader, "This novel is continuously exciting. Carl Coles puts aside his personal life and sacrifices himself for his country for years. He struggles with choices such as getting married to the women he loves. Is it selfish for him to involve her? Despite all the tragedy I don't think this noble man would have done anything differently." Maureen Larson is waiting for her man. His time to save her grows shorter.

The thrilling third novel from multi-award-nominated author Adam Brookes is paranoid, tense spy fiction at its very finest. Meet Pearl Tao: an American girl with a lethal secret. Pearl longs for the life of a normal American teenager: summers at the pool, friends, backyard barbecues in the Washington DC suburbs. But she is different. Her gift for mathematics means overprotective parents and college sponsorship from a secretive technology corporation. And now, aged nineteen, she is beginning to understand what her parents intend for her. The terrifying role she is to play. Her only hope of escape lies with two sidelined and discredited spies: Trish Patterson and Philip Mangan. Finding out the truth about Pearl will be the biggest mission they'll ever undertake. "Authentic, taut and compelling. Brookes is the real deal." -- Charles Cumming

Book Short Summary:

A “splendidly sharp . . . mix of espionage, wifely identity crisis, and unlikely romance” by the author of the Dalziel and Pascoe mysteries (Kirkus Reviews). Best known for his Dalziel and Pascoe novels, which were adapted into a hit BBC series, Reginald Hill proves himself to be a “master of . . . cerebral puzzle mysteries” in his stand-alone thrillers as well—now available as ebooks (The New York Times). Molly Keatley is a happy housewife living comfortably day-to-day in Westcliff-on-Sea. That changes in a heartbeat when her husband, Sam, grabs his suitcase, offers a hurried “I love you,” sprints out the door, and disappears from her life. Then, a British agent invites himself in with shattering news: Sam is a Soviet spy and traitor. And his secrets don’t end there. Though her dream life has been upended by an unforgivable betrayal, Molly won’t be intimidated. Not by Sam’s unstable mistress, not by British Intelligence, nor by Sam’s colleagues, who are watching every move she makes. But when she receives a surreptitious invitation from Sam to join him in Bucharest, Molly’s life will change once again as she discovers the nature of his lies, the consequences of deception, and the truth about her own desires. Reginald Hill has crafted a “terrific, suspenseful tale and an extraordinary heroine” (Cleveland Plain-Dealer).
