Book Excerpt :

Jeanie thinks she was to blame for the sexual assault she suffered in college—and she’d do anything to keep her old-school Catholic family from finding out about the resulting pregnancy, as well as what she did to conceal it. Years have passed since the assault, and Jeanie’s husband, Greg, still thinks she’s the seemingly innocent girl he married in a rush to spite his controlling mother. It’s the height of the Seattle dot-com boom, and he’s too busy cashing in his stock options to pay attention to his wife. He isn’t aware of Jeanie’s lingering shame and guilt, or that she married him in the desperate hope that devoting herself to marriage and motherhood would somehow absolve her from the sins in her past. Their hidden agendas collide when Greg discovers evidence of Jeanie’s long-ago pregnancy. As she confesses the details of that drunken night with her married professor, Greg’s pristine image of her is blown. His shock deepens into violent fury, and Jeanie realizes she needs to leave him—but Greg won’t let her go. He’s up for a big promotion, and he’s not about to let her ruin his reputation by walking out on him. He’ll resort to blackmail if necessary. Or worse.

Book Short Summary:

You will soon notice why this book has brought swift and glaring criticism from the law enforcement and psychological fields; as it allows the reader a killers first hand view; unlike anything you have ever experienced, or may ever wish to experience again. Every volume written about repetitive killers has never fully answered the reason why. They give psychological opinions and text book retort; a clinical definition as to one ́s mental health, but it is not science that defines humanity, only the status quo. From the first to the last page you will take a passage toward one of the most profound views of the thoughts and realities as to how a killer thinks; his truths; his idealistic perceptions of the world we share... insights you will never see otherwise. As one reader stated, "At first I wanted to get into his head and see what he sees; now all I want is for him to get out."

Book Short Summary:

It's 1997, and eight months since vigilante justice-seeker Claymore Straker fled South Africa after his explosive testimony to Desmond Tutu's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In Paris, Rania LaTour, Claymore's former lover, comes home to find that her son and her husband, a celebrated human rights lawyer, have disappeared. On an isolated island off the coast of East Africa, the family that Clay has befriended is murdered as he watches. So begins the fourth instalment in the Claymore Straker series, a breakneck journey through the darkest reaches of the human soul, as Clay and Rain fight to uncover the mystery behind the disappearances and murders, and find those responsible. Relentlessly pursued by those who want them dead, they must work together to uncover the truth, and to find a way to survive in a world gone mad. At times brutal, often lyrical, but always gripping, Absolution is a thriller that will leave you breathless and questioning the very basis of how we live and why we love. ‘A trenchant and engaging thriller that unravels this mysterious land in cool, precise sentences' Stav Sherez, Catholic Herald ‘This is a remarkably well-written, sophisticated novel in which the people and places, as well as frequent scenes of violent action, all come alive on the page...' Literary Review ‘Gripping and exciting … the quality of Hardisty's writing and the underlying truth of his plots sets this above many other thrillers' West Australian 'Searing … at times achieves the level of genuine poetry' Publishers Weekly ‘A stormer of a thriller - vividly written, utterly tropical, totally gripping' Peter James ‘Beautifully written, blisteringly authentic, heart-stoppingly tense and unusually moving' Paul Johnston ‘The plot burns through petrol, with multiple twists and turns' Vicky Newham ‘A solid, meaty thriller – Hardisty is a fine writer and Straker is a great lead character' Lee Child ‘A fast-paced action thriller, beautifully written' Tim Marshall, author of Prisoners of Geography

Book Short Summary:

In this suspenseful, romantic sequel to Apparition, Amelia Mackenzie, reluctant teenage clairvoyant, is caught up in a series of paranormal mysteries that threaten to unravel everything she believes in. After Amelia's best friend and secret crush Matthew dies in an apparent suicide, Amelia is heartbroken. Adding to her upheaval is the realization that she is firmly in the clutches of Matthew's ghost. Even after the barn in which Matthew had died is burnt to the ground, Matthew's spirit continues to stalk the ruins and Amelia must try to take care of his increasingly restless and reckless ghostly acts. It's not easy for Amelia to keep Matthew's presence a secret from her two brothers and her grandmother, Joyce. Amelia even tries to keep Matthew's 'survival' from her ghost tracking mentor Morris and his son Kip. But she is harbouring an even bigger secret these days: her deepening feelings for Kip. Unable to reconcile her longing for the flesh-and-blood Kip with her commitment to Matthew's ghost, she's pushed Kip away. Now, he's gone back to school in Chicago, and she can't get him off her mind. By the time Amelia and Morris are given a new ghost-tracking challenge, Kip has returned to Grey County for spring break, and long buried sparks are beginning to fly. As the trio set out to uncover the mysterious story behind a local inn that seems to harbour a ghost with a guilty conscience, desperate for forgiveness the mystery only deepens. Before long, a stretch of country road nearby reveals a strange history of its own--a series of fatal car accidents involving deer. Is there a connection between the haunted inn and the deadly stretch of road that it's on? With the rivalry intensifying between Matthew and Kip, Amelia's heart is in more conflict than ever. The ghost Matthew gets ever more comfortable in his phantom skin, which means Kip's headed for trouble, and only Amelia can protect him.

Book Short Summary:

“Residing in rural southern Oklahoma, it has only been within the last seven years that Thomas Kidwell has come to fully express his passion for writing. In his novel, Beyond Absolution, he writes about the disassociation with God that is experienced by a young man in the early 1820’s when the young man loses his wife and daughters to an epidemic of cholera. Those people reading this book who know Thomas Kidwell, as I do, will recognize that he is expressing depths of grief that can only be expressed by someone who has experienced that grief firsthand. The personal tragedy that fell upon the leading character’s life is a tragedy that has affected most everyone at one time or another, and it’s a tragedy that is vividly familiar to Thomas. As the book so eloquently illustrates, God can sustain us during these difficult times—unless we choose to turn away from him. The hero in Beyond Absolution finds that his journey away from God is leading him nowhere. Can he redeem himself in the eyes of God? Can he find the peace and companionship that he so desperately craves? Beyond Absolution is truly a fascinating read with a powerful message.” —Dr. H. Norman Stillwell

Book Short Summary:

The first prediction of the Moabite parchment is coming to pass. The world is in the death grip of a devastating plague. Civilization is on the brink of chaos. Some are saying it’s the wrath of God, while others are proclaiming the end times. In the small Midwestern town of Thorntree, Father Jacob Winston watches helplessly as his friends are transformed into hideous creatures and die screaming on their seventh day. When presented with half of the parchment, he is offered a way to alleviate their suffering. If he accepts the first half of the parchment he will become instrumental in making the second prediction come true. The consequences of the second prediction reach far beyond the natural order and into the realm of angels and demons. The cardinals are gathering in Rome to elect a new pope. In the intrigue of the conclave, the journal of the last pope and the second half of the parchment are discovered. If these documents are allowed to be presented to the other cardinals, their surprising contents could determine the outcome of the election, and shape the future of the church and the world.

Book Short Summary:

Alarick Brandon is the powerful wizard who operates The Keep, a refuge for magical people fleeing the persecution of the Ministry.A bitter realist, Alarick knows it's only a matter of time until the Ministry succeeds in eradicating magic from the world—and exterminating all magical beings—so he has been careful to avoid any personal involvement with the people who pass through his sanctuary. But when Elissa Stone arrives at The Keep, her village a smoldering ruin and only her magical talent and a forbidden library left to her name, Alarick's ordered world descends into chaos. Elissa is a Book Mesmer, a magical talent long believed extinct. She can enchant books, making them indestructible, unreadable…even deadly to unauthorized readers. But while her magic can secure a legacy for future magical generations, it's not a skill that's good in a fight, and certainly not one Alarick sees any real use for. But there's something compelling about a woman who defies the Ministry's edicts against female literacy, and she seems determined to prove that knowledge is a weapon in its own right… The first installment in an enticing new fantasy series by author Jennifer Derrick, Library of Absolution is a compelling story of perseverance and determination in the face of persecution, in a Dark Age where hope is lost—and knowledge is the only thing left to fight for.

In A.D. 664, King Oswy of Northumbria has convened a synod at Whitby to hear debate between the Roman and Celtic Christian churches and decide which shall be granted primacy in his kingdom. At stake is much more than a few disputed points of ritual; Oswy's decision could affect the survival of either church in the Saxon kingdoms. When the Abbess Etain, a leading speaker for the Celtic church, is found murdered, suspicion falls upon the Roman faction. In order to diffuse the tensions that threaten to erupt into civil war, Oswy turns to Sister Fidelma of the Celtic Church (Irish and an advocate for the Brehon Court) and Brother Eadulf of the Roman church (from east Anglia and of a family of hereditary magistrates) to find the killer. But as further murders occur and a treasonous plot against Oswy matures, Fidelma and Eadulf soon find themselves running out of time.

Book Short Summary:

Book Short Summary:

It's 2036. Henri is a wealthy physician, husband, father, and serial philanderer. He is also one of the relatively few people to still have a job. Automation and other technological advances have led to unemployment so severe that many people are no longer expected to work and are now known as The Absolved. Meanwhile, it's election season, and a candidate from a radical fringe party called the Luddites is calling for an end to the Divine Rights of Machines. After Henri is displaced from his job, two Luddite sympathizers—whom Henri has befriended at his local bar—frame him for an anti-technology terrorist act. The prospect of Henri's salvation comes at the cost of foregoing his guiding principles in life. This new vision for the world, after all, just might prove better than the technological advancements that, paradoxically, have left humanity out in the cold.

Book Short Summary:

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018 An Edgar Award nominee for best critical / biographical Best of 2018 according to Kirkus, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, The Portland Mercury, Bustle, Thrillist, and Electric Lit A New York Times Editor's Choice, a best of summer 2018 according to Bitch Magazine, Harpers Bazaar, The Millions, Esquire, Refinery29, Nylon, PopSugar, The Chicago Tribune, Book Riot, and CrimeReads In this poignant collection, Alice Bolin examines iconic American works from the essays of Joan Didion and James Baldwin to Twin Peaks, Britney Spears, and Serial, illuminating the widespread obsession with women who are abused, killed, and disenfranchised, and whose bodies (dead and alive) are used as props to bolster men’s stories. Smart and accessible, thoughtful and heartfelt, Bolin investigates the implications of our cultural fixations, and her own role as a consumer and creator. Bolin chronicles her life in Los Angeles, dissects the Noir, revisits her own coming of age, and analyzes stories of witches and werewolves, both appreciating and challenging the narratives we construct and absorb every day. Dead Girls begins by exploring the trope of dead women in fiction, and ends by interrogating the more complex dilemma of living women – both the persistent injustices they suffer and the oppression that white women help perpetrate. Reminiscent of the piercing insight of Rebecca Solnit and the critical skill of Hilton Als, Bolin constructs a sharp, perceptive, and revelatory dialogue on the portrayal of women in media and their roles in our culture.

Book Short Summary:

From the New York Times bestselling author of How We Got To Now and Farsighted Forget everything you’ve ever read about the age of dumbed-down, instant-gratification culture. In this provocative, unfailingly intelligent, thoroughly researched, and surprisingly convincing big idea book, Steven Johnson draws from fields as diverse as neuroscience, economics, and media theory to argue that the pop culture we soak in every day—from Lord of the Rings to Grand Theft Auto to The Simpsons—has been growing more sophisticated with each passing year, and, far from rotting our brains, is actually posing new cognitive challenges that are actually making our minds measurably sharper. After reading Everything Bad is Good for You, you will never regard the glow of the video game or television screen the same way again. With a new afterword by the author.

Book Short Summary:

This carefully crafted ebook: "Summa Theologica (All Complete & Unabridged 3 Parts + Supplement & Appendix + interactive links and annotations)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This ebook is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274). Although unfinished, the Summa is "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa Theologica is divided into three parts, and each of these three parts contains numerous subdivisions. Part 1 deals primarily with God and comprises discussions of 119 questions concerning the existence and nature of God, the Creation, angels, the work of the six days of Creation, the essence and nature of man, and divine government. Part 2 deals with man and includes discussions of 303 questions concerning the purpose of man, habits, types of law, vices and virtues, prudence and justice, fortitude and temperance, graces, and the religious versus the secular life. Part 3 deals with Christ and comprises discussions of 90 questions concerning the Incarnation, the Sacraments, and the Resurrection. Some editions of the Summa Theologica include a Supplement comprising discussions of an additional 99 questions concerning a wide variety of loosely related issues such as excommunication, indulgences, confession, marriage, purgatory, and the relations of the saints toward the damned. Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica. It seeks to describe the relationship between God and man and to explain how man’s reconciliation with the Divine is made possible at all through Christ. To this end, Aquinas cites proofs for the existence of God and outlines the activities and nature of God. Approximately one-half of the Summa Theologica then examines the nature and purpose of man. Finally, Aquinas devotes his attention to the nature of Christ and the role of the Sacraments in effecting a bridge between God and man. Within these broad topical boundaries, though, Aquinas examines the nature of God and man in exquisite detail. His examination includes questions of how angels act on bodies, the union of body and soul, the cause and remedies of anger, cursing, and the comparison of one sin with another. Aquinas is attempting to offer a truly universal and rational view of all existence. Thomas Aquinas, O.P. (1225 – 1274), also Thomas of Aquin or Aquino, was an Italian Dominican priest, and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the "Doctor Angelicus", "Doctor Communis", and "Doctor Universalis". He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived in development or refutation of his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory.

Book Short Summary:

With The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald made a conscious departure from the writing process of his previous novels. He started planning it in June 1922, after completing his play The Vegetable and began composing The Great Gatsby in 1923. He ended up discarding most of it as a false start, some of which resurfaced in the story "Absolution." Unlike his previous works, Fitzgerald intended to edit and reshape Gatsby thoroughly, believing that it held the potential to launch him toward literary acclaim. He told his editor Maxwell Perkins that the novel was a "consciously artistic achievement" and a "purely creative work — not trashy imaginings as in my stories but the sustained imagination of a sincere and yet radiant world." He added later, during editing, that he felt "an enormous power in me now, more than I've ever had." The Great Gatsby takes place in 1922, during the Roaring Twenties, a time of prosperity in the United States after World War I. It is widely regarded as a "Great American Novel" and a literary classic, capturing the essence of an era. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896 – 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.

Book Short Summary:

In 1941 the German physicist Werner Heisenberg made a strange trip to Copenhagen to see his Danish counterpart, Niels Bohr. They were old friends and close colleagues, and they had revolutionised atomic physics in the 1920s with their work together on quantum mechanics and the uncertainty principle. But now the world had changed, and the two men were on opposite sides in a world war. The meeting was fraught with danger and embarrassment, and ended in disaster. Why the German physicist Heisenberg went to Copenhagen in 1942 and what he wanted to say to the Danish physicist Bohr are questions which have exercised historians of nuclear physics ever since. In Michael Frayn's new play Heisenberg meets Bohr and his wife Margrethe once again to look for the answers, and to work out, just as they had once worked out the internal functioning of the atom, how we can ever know why we do what we do. 'Michael Frayn's tremendous new play is a piece of history, an intellectual thriller, a psychological investigation and a moral tribunal in full session.' Sunday Times

Book Short Summary:

From the author of the #1 international bestseller The Abomination The no-holds-barred conclusion to Jonathan Holt’s revolutionary Carnivia Trilogy (preceded by The Abomination and The Abduction), The Absolution follows Venetian police captain Kat Tapo and U.S. Army intelligence analyst Holly Boland on their most dangerous and disturbing journey yet On Venice’s crowded Lido beach, a man is found lying half in and half out of the sea with his throat cut open and his tongue torn out by the roots. On his face is a curious antique mask. Kat Tapo of the Venice Carabinieri is pleased to be running her first murder investigation. But when she learns that the mask is a piece of Masonic paraphernalia known as a “hoodwink,” she starts to wonder if she’s been put in charge because, as a woman, she’s unable to penetrate the closed world of Italian freemasonry. The dead man turns out to be a senior partner in a small Catholic bank, currently engaged in negotiations with one of Italy’s richest men. But Kat soon discovers that money isn't the only motive for murder. Meanwhile, intelligence analyst Second Lieutenant Holly Boland has found a document among her father’s belongings that indicates a Cold War cover-up. As she tracks down exactly what he knew, she is forced to ask herself: was her father prepared to become a whistleblower? And was he silenced for it? And reclusive genius Daniele Barbo, owner of anonymous website Carnivia.com, has discovered that his site has been contaminated by a virus—one that will unleash a wave of destruction across Italy unless he can break his own encryption and prevent an atrocity from taking place. As the three of them join together to track down the truth, they discover a powerful conspiracy involving the security services, the Church, and the CIA—a conspiracy with roots stretching back many decades.
