Book Short Summary:

The Tide of Poverty is a soberingly plausible account of how easy it would be to bring a nuclear device into our nation and to destroy not only the northern half of the State of Washington but to deliver four additional nuclear ‘dirty bombs’ to our nations’ capital. As wildfi res ravage our nation, as states secede from the union, as right wing hate groups gain leverage not only in local areas but in national politics as well the reader will begin to realize how perilously close to anarchy our nation has drifted. It is also a delightful account of how in many crisis ordinary people rise to what is demanded of heroes and thwart diabolical plots of massive intrigue and power. It is seldom the ‘super hero’ that ‘saves the day’. It is the ordinary person who lives up to the standard set by Robert Service when he in the 1800’s wrote “Carry On”. America needs to wake up to what is happening. For too long we have allowed political ideology to supplant common sense, science, even religion. You may deny that far right wing groups pose a danger to our nation and to your very last breath you may cast blame on others, yet when radiation burns your fl esh, when wildfi res consume your homes or fl oods sweep you out to sea you will still be dead. And so will your nation.

Book Short Summary:

Wildland fires have an irreplaceable role in sustaining many of our forests, shrublands and grasslands. They can be used as controlled burns or occur as free-burning wildfires, and can sometimes be dangerous and destructive to fauna, human communities and natural resources. Through scientific understanding of their behaviour, we can develop the tools to reliably use and manage fires across landscapes in ways that are compatible with the constraints of modern society while benefiting the ecosystems. The science of wildland fire is incomplete, however. Even the simplest fire behaviours – how fast they spread, how long they burn and how large they get – arise from a dynamical system of physical processes interacting in unexplored ways with heterogeneous biological, ecological and meteorological factors across many scales of time and space. The physics of heat transfer, combustion and ignition, for example, operate in all fires at millimetre and millisecond scales but wildfires can become conflagrations that burn for months and exceed millions of hectares. Wildland Fire Behaviour: Dynamics, Principles and Processes examines what is known and unknown about wildfire behaviours. The authors introduce fire as a dynamical system along with traditional steady-state concepts. They then break down the system into its primary physical components, describe how they depend upon environmental factors, and explore system dynamics by constructing and exercising a nonlinear model. The limits of modelling and knowledge are discussed throughout but emphasised by review of large fire behaviours. Advancing knowledge of fire behaviours will require a multidisciplinary approach and rely on quality measurements from experimental research, as covered in the final chapters.

Book Short Summary:

Nearly two years after the harrowing events of The Straits of Galahesh, Atiana and Nikandr continue their long search for Nasim. The clues they find lead them to the desert wastes of the Gaji, where the fabled valley of Shadam Khoreh lies. But all is not well. War has moved from the islands to the mainland, and the Grand Duchy knows its time may be limited if Yrstanla rallies its forces. Worse, the wasting disease and the rifts grow ever wider, threatening places that once thought themselves safe. The Dukes believe that their only hope may be to treat with the Haelish warriors to the west of Yrstanla, but Nikandr knows that the key is to find Nasim and a lost artifact known as the Atalayina. Will Nikandr succeed and close the rifts once and for all? The answer lies deep within the Flames of Shadam Khoreh. From Bradley P. Beaulieu, author of the critically acclaimed debut novel, The Winds of Khalakovo, comes the concluding volume in the Lays of Anuskaya trilogy, The Flames of Shadam Khoreh.

'Rhidauna', the first book of the great fantasy series 'The Shadow of the Revenaunt'. The night before his Coming-of-Age, Ghyll and his two friends escape their castle on a clandestine boar hunt that will forever change their lives. The hunt proves a disaster, and with one of them badly wounded, they return just in time to see their island castle destroyed by macabre warriors from a dragon boat, and by flocks of fire-breathing birds. Ghyll's eighteenth birthday turns into a nightmare as they flee into the night. Now begins an epic journey to find out who is trying to kill them – and most importantly, why? Fortunately, they can count on the help of new friends, including a sometimes overly enthusiastic fire mage, an inexperienced paladin and a young beastmistress who is also a ferocious mountain lioness. It soon becomes clear that not one but several sorcerers want to kill them. Are those blackrobes really followers of a terrible, long-forgotten organization? And whose cold hand reaches across the boundaries of space and time to crush weakened Rhidauna? Note from the Author: This version has been revised on some vital plot points. "Rhidauna by Paul E. Horsman is a compelling and fast paced fantasy story that takes you on a thrilling, action packed horseback adventure across a country filled with powerful magic, greed and treachery."
