Book Short Summary:

Considered one of Jung's most controversial works, Answer to Job also stands as Jung's most extensive commentary on a biblical text. Here, he confronts the story of the man who challenged God, the man who experienced hell on earth and still did not reject his faith. Job's journey parallels Jung's own experience--as reported in The Red Book: Liber Novus--of descending into the depths of his own unconscious, confronting and reconciling the rejected aspects of his soul. This paperback edition of Jung's classic work includes a new foreword by Sonu Shamdasani, Philemon Professor of Jung History at University College London. Described by Shamdasani as "the theology behind The Red Book," Answer to Job examines the symbolic role that theological concepts play in an individual's psychic life.

A series of apparently random murders draws amiable, old-school Detective Mick Matlock into a world of sex, politics, reality TV and a bewildering kaleidoscope of opposing identity groups. Lost in a blizzard of hashtags, his already complex investigation is further impeded by the fact that he simply doesn’t ‘get’ a single thing about anything anymore. Meanwhile, each day another public figure confesses to having ‘misspoken’ and prostrates themselves before the judgement of Twitter. Begging for forgiveness, assuring the public “that is not who I am”. But if nobody is who they are anymore - then who the f##k are we? Ben Elton returns with a blistering satire of the world as it fractures around us. Get ready for a roller-coaster thriller, where nothing - and no one - is off limits.

Book Short Summary:

The lure of antiques, an unfolding love affair, mystery and malice, set in an achingly beautiful remote location. It’s said that Cross County keeps its secrets. The detective spread out his hands in a gesture of defeat. “They didn’t want our report; they’d do their own investigation. My chief told me to leave things alone, given Cross County’s reputation for insularity and truculence.” Deep in the Appalachians of southern Pennsylvania lies Cross County, its coal mines closed decades ago, leaving it poor and struggling. Until now. Thanks to the rich Marcellus Shale gas deposits, the county is having an economic boom, and the financially strapped Colton Area School District is starting to recover. Then someone sets fire to one of the elementary schools, and among the ashes are found the charred remains of the district Superintendent. Jerry noted the frenetic activity as he drove into Colton to take the job of Acting Superintendent. This wasn’t your usual down-at-the-heels rural school district, he thought, his interest growing. Things were buzzing, and as Superintendent he’d get to harness that buzz to make real improvements in education. And, astonishingly, find himself in love. But he’d also have to deal with old resentments, new opportunism, entrenched loyalties, and a long tradition of . . . arson. By the author of Antiques To Die For, the first book in a series on antiques and murder.

Some people discard their dreams into a bottomless throwaway basket, but what the author did is make a book about them, especially the work situations that he dreamed. Since he worked with his hands most of his life, he decided to basically write down all his dreams that entailed work scenarios. After all, he dreamed of many types of other dreams, which may require further editions. With some of his dreams, he also incorporated a certain form of common sense type of analyzation. After all, dreams always have a secret meaning, and the author's curiosity will never make that secret rest. There are beneficial aspects of dissecting a dream that can lead anyone in a life with fewer mistakes, only if they are open to finding the meaning of the dreams they dream. One can go to a psychiatrist for $600 an hour to try to understand their dreams, or they could possibly learn the art of analyzing their dreams with a self-made inexpensive method from this book. Lastly, if by reading this book, and only learning one little tidbit on understanding one's dreams, the actual cost of this book would cost the reader less than three minutes time of a shrink.

Book Short Summary:

From bestselling writer David Graeber—“a master of opening up thought and stimulating debate” (Slate)—a powerful argument against the rise of meaningless, unfulfilling jobs…and their consequences. Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world? In the spring of 2013, David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative essay titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs.” It went viral. After one million online views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. There are hordes of people—HR consultants, communication coordinators, telemarketing researchers, corporate lawyers—whose jobs are useless, and, tragically, they know it. These people are caught in bullshit jobs. Graeber explores one of society’s most vexing and deeply felt concerns, indicting among other villains a particular strain of finance capitalism that betrays ideals shared by thinkers ranging from Keynes to Lincoln. “Clever and charismatic” (The New Yorker), Bullshit Jobs gives individuals, corporations, and societies permission to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture. This book is for everyone who wants to turn their vocation back into an avocation and “a thought-provoking examination of our working lives” (Financial Times).

God never intended for us to get comfortable with church service and not realize that He has called each and every one of us to fulfill something in the Earth realm. This book is designed to assist in equipping you to be all that God has called you to be. It will stir you to know that more is on the inside of you than just the church service you have been attending. You will learn how: To live the inner life. To know your position. The dynamics of your spiritual weapons for a spiritual battle. And MORE. It is time to excel in the things that God has for you. For we are to live in the realm of the supernatural.

Book Short Summary:

She may be the goddess of marriage, but no man is gonna tie her down...without the right ropes. Danger. Excitement. Adventure. That's what Hera thought she was signing on for when she agreed to join the Gods of Thunder Motorcycle Club, led by her brother Zeus. Just the thing for a smoking hot, slightly lost divorcée who also happens to be the Greek goddess of marriage. Instead, her primary sources of entertainment seem to be picking bugs out of her teeth and finding yet another creative way to sabotage her peacock-painted Harley so she can ride in the comfort of the club's support SUV. But this time she broke her bike a little too well. With the rest of the club on a tight schedule, they leave Hera behind to wait for the local mechanic to perform a miracle. A mechanic who fills out his coveralls better than any mortal she's ever met. Hey, maybe getting stuck in the sticks won't be so bad after all. With his days as the Norse God of Wolves long behind him, Fenrir has settled into a routine that suits his lone wolf ways. Ride into some small town, work a menial-yet-satisfying job for a while, then move on before anyone catches wise to the fact that he never ages. Then she rides into town. Glamorous Hera always turned heads back when they ran in the same heavenly circles, but seeing her poured into skin-tight leathers and sitting astride a beautiful bike really lights a fire in Fenrir-one he thought had died centuries ago. Not that it matters. She thinks he's some mortal bohunk grease monkey with more brawn than brains. Fine by him. He needs to keep a low profile anyway. When Hera finds a wounded wolf pup on the outskirts of town, Fenrir must reveal his true identity to save the pup, opening a Pandora's box-worth of trouble with a nearby werewolf pack. If he were smart, he'd blow town, leaving the goddess who gets his motor running and the fate of a besieged wolf pack in his dust. He never claimed to be smart.

Book Short Summary:

The most popular sports columnist in America puts his life (and dignity) on the line in search of the most absurd sporting event on the planet. What is the stupidest sport in the world? Not content to pontificate from the sidelines, Rick Reilly set out on a global journey—with stops in Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, England, and even a maximum security prison at Angola, Louisiana—to discover the answer to this enduring question. From the physically and mentally taxing sport of chess boxing to the psychological battlefield that is the rock-paper-scissors championship, to the underground world of illegal jart throwing, to several competitions that involve nudity, Reilly, in his valiant quest, subjected himself to both bodily danger and abject humiliation (or, in the case of ferret legging, both). These fringe sports offer their participants a chance to earn a few bucks and achieve the eternal glory that is winning—even when the victory in question might strike some as pointless, like the ability to sit in an oven-hot sauna for the longest time. It's debatable whether these sports push the body or just human idiocy to the outermost limits, but one thing is for sure: Sports in Hell is laugh-out-loud hilarious and will deliver plenty of unabashed fun.

Book Short Summary:

The term 'outsiders' often has negative connotations: these are the people who are regarded as 'them' in contrast to 'us', the arrivals from distant provinces or foreign lands, those not quite belonging, those not exactly fitting in, those not conforming. Of course, there is another side to this coin: there are those who stand out quite deliberately, who choose to go against the grain, the ones who challenge established social, cultural or religious norms, who question the policies and orthodoxies broadly accepted by those of us who are of the mainstream, who are 'inside the tent'. Outsiders in London, an artistic socio-political project exhibited in central London in Spring 2015, aims to reveal through fine photographic portraits and often touching, deeply personal life stories something of the lives of 41 individuals, who perceive (or have perceived) themselves as 'outsiders' in one way or another, and to celebrate both that they have survived and what they have achieved. It is also to be hoped that every one of us will recognise in some of these images, and life stories, a little bit (perhaps a lot) of ourselves or of someone close to us. They might be Londoners but the topics covered are universal. The Photographer, Milan Svanderlik, is a veteran observer of the extraordinary diversity and beauty of nature, people and life in general and his previous project, 100 Faces of London, was exhibited in London in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics. Milan has also conducted and transcribed all the interviews with his sitters. Gerald Stuart Burnett was born to émigré Scottish parents in a small Cheshire market town. Graduating from the University of Stirling, he went on to the University of Nottingham before pursuing a long career in the Education Service. Gerald's project role has been primarily as editor, painstakingly reworking the text of each 'life story' into its current form.

Book Short Summary:

The National Book Award–winning coming-out memoir. “One of the most complex, moral, personal, and political books to have been written about gay life” (LA Weekly). Paul Monette grew up all-American, Catholic, overachieving . . . and closeted. As a child of the 1950s, a time when a kid suspected of being a “homo” would routinely be beaten up, Monette kept his secret throughout his adolescence. He wrestled with his sexuality for the first thirty years of his life, priding himself on his ability to “pass” for straight. The story of his journey to adulthood and to self-acceptance with grace and honesty, this intimate portrait of a young man’s struggle with his own desires is witty, humorous, and deeply felt. Before his death of complications from AIDS in 1995, Monette was an outspoken activist crusading for gay rights. Becoming a Man shows his courageous path to stand up for his own right to love and be loved. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Paul Monette including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the Paul Monette papers of the UCLA Library Special Collections.

Book Short Summary:

“Diane Shah was a boots-on-the-ground female sports reporter in the Cro-Magnon 1970s and brings it all back in this hilarious, well-crafted book.” —Dan Shaughnessy, Boston Globe sports columnist and New York Times bestselling author Strike fast, strike hard—whether it’s scoring a homerun or front-page news, Diane K. Shah, former sports columnist, knows how to grab the best story. In her memoir A Farewell to Arms, Legs, and Jockstraps, follow Diane’s escapades, from interviews with a tipsy Mickey Mantle, to sneaking into off-limits Republican galas, dining with Frank Sinatra, flying a plane with Dennis Quaid, and countless other adventures where she wields her tape recorder and a tireless drive for more. From skirting KGB agents while covering the Cold War Olympics to hunting down the three mechanical sharks starring in Jaws, Diane’s experiences are filled with real heart and a tongue-in-cheek attitude. An insightful look into the difficulties of navigating a male-dominated profession, A Farewell to Arms, Legs, and Jockstraps offers rich retellings and behind-the-scenes details of stories of a trailblazing career and the prejudices facing female sportswriters during the sixties and seventies. “Impossibly elegant, and the most fun ever. The only thing better than reading Diane K. Shah’s memoir was, I suppose, living it.” —Sally Jenkins, columnist and feature writer, Washington Post “Diane’s memoir is just like her columns—smart, funny, enlightening—just like her. Until reading it, I never really knew all the challenges she dealt with. She broke ground but never acted like it. I was lucky to work with the first female sports columnist in the country.” —Ken Gurnick, LA Dodgers correspondent for MLB.com
