Convinced he can’t return to his former coach’s devoutly Christian household, KC thumbs his way to Seattle. If he’s no longer the Mighty KC, destined to have his stats on a Topps trading card, who is he? The loser his mother always warned he would be? An imposter praying in vain for God to change him? Bad luck and a busted nose bring him to Eugene, Oregon, where he finds unlikely friends, work, and even a new purpose. But day by day he’s gaining something else: courage to play from the heart, no matter what the result might be...

Book Short Summary:

A murder-for-hire goes wrong in this thriller by “one of the most consistently entertaining, insightful crime writers working today” (Gillian Flynn). After Alan Langford’s charred remains were found in his burnt-out Jaguar, his abused, long-suffering wife, Donna, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to ten years at Wakefield Prison. It was worth the time. But shortly before her release, Donna receives a nasty shock: an anonymous letter containing a recent photo of her husband—the man she despised and feared, the man she paid to have killed, the man she’s now begging London inspector Tom Thorne to find. Even for a seasoned DI like Thorne, this is a first: tracking a man who’s come back from the dead. But when Donna’s daughter suddenly disappears, Thorne finds himself following two trails of revenge and double cross. And they’re both leading into the menacing shadow of a killer who wants the case buried for good. With his multiple award-winning series, “Mark Billingham has brought a rare and welcome blend of humanity, dimension, and excitement to the genre” (George Pelecanos). From the Dead is not only “a good crime story, but . . . [a] novel . . .about the complexities and pitfalls of love” (The Washington Post). “Engrossing . . . chillingly clever.” —Publishers Weekly “Mark Billingham is one of my favorite new writers.” —Harlan Coben “Tom Thorne is a wonderful creation. Rush to read these books.” —Karin Slaughter, New York Times–bestselling author

Book Short Summary:

Local news photographer Ethan is pretty sure there’s no such thing as a jackalope. Every bunny he's ever seen has been a cute little furry creature, not a dangerous, horned beastie. But somehow he lets big, tough American hunter Logan drag him into Parkhurst Forest on the Isle of Wight on what Ethan’s convinced is a wild goose chase. Logan’s on a mission to wipe out the jackalope colony he’s convinced has been brought to the island by a madman. He’s got a healthy respect for the vicious critters, which is more than he seems to have for the less physically imposing Ethan. But when an escaped convict from a nearby prison bursts into the mix, all their plans are thrown awry. Seeing Ethan at the mercy of the violent criminal brings Logan’s true feelings for the smaller guy out into the open ... and what happens next could lead to a change of heart about the jackalopes, as well!

Book Short Summary:

“Gilbert Sorrentino has long been one of our most intelligent and daring writers. But he is also one of our funniest writers, given to Joycean flights of wordplay, punning, list-making, vulgarity and relentless self-commentary.”—The New York Times “Sorrentino’s ear for dialects and metaphor is perfect: his creations, however brief their presence, are vivid, and much of his writing is very funny and clever, piled with allusions.”—The Washington Post Book World Bearing his trademark balance between exquisitely detailed narration, ground-breaking form, and sharp insight into modern life, Gilbert Sorrentino’s first-ever collection of stories spans 35 years of his writing career and contains both new stories and those that expanded and transformed the landscape of American fiction when they first appeared in such magazines and anthologies as Harper’s, Esquire, and The Best American Short Stories. In these grimly comic, unsentimental tales, the always-memorable characters dive headlong into the wasteland of urban culture, seeking out banal perversions, confusing art with the art scene, mistaking lust for love, and letting petty aspirations get the best of them. This is a world where the American dream is embodied in the moonlit cocktail hour and innocence passes at a breakneck speed, swiftly becoming a nostalgia-ridden cliché. As Sorrentino says in the title story, “art cannot rescue anybody from anything,” but his stories do offer some salvation to each of us by locating hope, humor, and beauty amidst a prevailing wind of cynical despair. Gilbert Sorrentino has published over 20 books of fiction and poetry, including the classic Mulligan Stew and his latest novel, Little Casino, which was shortlisted for the 2003 PEN/Faulkner Award. After two decades on the faculty at Stanford University, he recently returned to his native Brooklyn.

Even if you haven’t, you will enjoy this book and chuckle, as it takes you back 50 years to a somewhat simpler time. Book Short Summary:

Tommy and Nathan Bishop are as different as two brothers can be. Carefree and careless, Tommy is the golden boy who takes men into his bed with a seductive smile and turns them out just as quickly. No one can resist him--and no one can control him, either. That salient point certainly isn't lost on his brother. Nathan is all about control. At thirty-one, he is as dark and complicated as Tommy is light and easy, and he is bitter beyond his years. While Tommy left for the excitement of New York City, Nathan has stayed behind, teaching high school English in their provincial hometown, surrounded by the reminders of their ruined family history and the legacy of anger that runs through him like a scar. Now, Tommy has come home to the family cottage by the sea for the summer, bringing his unstable, sexual powder keg of an entourage--and the distant echoes of his family's tumultuous past--with him. Tommy and his lover Philip are teetering on the brink of disaster, while their married friends, Camille and Kyle, perfect their steps in a dance of denial, each partner pulling Nathan deeper into the fray. And when one of Nathan's troubled students, Simon, begins visiting the house, the slow fuse is lit on a highly combustible mix. During a heady two-week party filled with drunken revelations, bitter jealousies, caustic jabs, and tender reconciliations, Tommy and Nathan will confront the legacy of their twisted family history--their angry, abusive father and the tragic death of their mother--and finally, the one secret that has shaped their entire lives. It is a summer that will challenge everything Nathan remembers and unravel Tommy's carefully constructed facade, drawing them both unwittingly into a drama with echoes of the past. . .one with unforeseen and very dangerous consequences. "There are undercurrents of tragedy and emotional scarring at work that take the story to disturbing places. . .Yates puts his novel together like a one-two punch and makes it readable. . .you can't put it down." --Edge Magazine

Book Short Summary:

Paul A. Lavallee is a romantic when writing or talking about small town New England. He is an occasional contributor to a weekly newspaper publication, writing on local issues as well as timely articles of interest. He was born and still lives in the heart of the Blackstone River Valley, where Americas industrial revolution began. A Marine veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Lavallees recollection of growing up in a small mill town during the war years of the 1940s, along with his later experiences at Parris Island, and then in war-ravaged Korea in the 1950s, all tended to inspire him to write his first novel, Rattle of the Looms. That novel was and still is so well received that a sequel seemed imperative. Thus comes the revisiting of the old mill town, Northcross, along with the eeriness of Emery Sibleys mansion, the few vaguely familiar faces over at Felix Morrells bar, as well as the folks who happen to be still around town in 1982, twenty-eight years after the close of the original novel that ended in 1954. Bullies are a huge problem, not only to children but also to adults. Plenty is said, but very little action is taken to stop it. James asked for help in school but never received any, and he continued to be bullied into his working years. Then he does something about it. He would prefer to get an apology from his former tormentors, but if they refuse, they have to face the consequences. James doesn't care how far he goes, not until he meets up with a former pupil who was also mistreated, and he finds a life that he thought was beyond him. He then goes on to help other victims who feel alone, hated, and sometimes suicidal. Although this is an entertaining novel, I hope that it will make people think about how they treat others, and how their views about certain things get adopted by their children. Just because people are different in some way doesn't mean you should pick on them or treat them unfairly. I hope this message gets across from "CONSEQUENCES."

Book Short Summary:

Robert Boswell's first novel since Century's Son showcases once again his "dazzling technical skill, intelligence and moral seriousness" (The New York Times Book Review) *A Library Journal "Best Indie Fiction of 2013" * At age thirty-three, James Candler seems to be well on the road to success. He's in line for a big promotion at Onyx Springs, the treatment facility where he's a therapist. He has a fiancée, a sizable house, and a Porsche. But . . . he's falling in love with another woman, he's underwater on his mortgage, and he's put his hapless best friend in charge of his signature therapeutic program. Even the GPS on his car can't seem to predict where he should turn next. And his clients are struggling in their own hilarious, heartbreaking ways to keep their lives on track. How can he help them if he can't help himself? In Tumbledown, Robert Boswell presents a large, unforgettable cast of characters who are all failing and succeeding in various degrees to make sense of our often-irrational world. In a moving narrative twist, he boldly reckons with the extent to which tragedy can be undone, the impossible accommodated.

Book Short Summary:

Sector General: A massive deep-space hospital station on the Galactic Rim, where human and alien medicine meet. Its 384 levels and thousands of staff members are supposedly able to meet the needs of any conceivable alien patient--though that capacity is always being strained as more (and stranger) alien races turn up to join the galactic community. Sentient viruses, interspecies romances, undreamed-of institutional catering problems--it all lands on Sector General's doorstep. And the only thing weirder than a hitherto unknown alien species is having a member of that species turn up in your Emergency Room. The first of two omnibus volumes reprints the works that began the Sector General series, which were previously published as Hospital Station (1962), Star Surgeon (1963), and Major Operation (1971). Book Short Summary:

A love story set in a bad dream about America, concerning permanent debt, secret police, making dinner, and unpaid invoices—right up until the end of the world. It’s Brooklyn. It’s winter. It’s so cold outside you could execute billionaires in the street about it. Sam lives with Eleanor and they are in love. He has three or four outstanding invoices that would each cover rent for a month. At some point, the President is going to make some absolutely wild announcements that will only end in doom. In a surreal, funny, and heart-breaking version of reality, Sasha Fletcher’s highly anticipated first novel occupies that rare register that manages to speak to an increasingly incomprehensible world. Through scenes that poetically transform the mundane into the sublime and the absurd into the tragic, Be Here to Love Me at the End of the World is about the exquisite beauty of being in love in a world that is falling apart.
