Book Short Summary:

The central theme of this collection of essays, first published in 1978, is the basic tension in Nietzsche, and so in his work, between the urge to weave a satisfying web out of reality and the equally strong compulsion to expose its painful truths. The book aims to stress, not to play down, the embarassing and fruitful fact that he cannot be neatly pigeonholed either as a literary figure or as a professional philosopher. The book meets a long-felt need for a study in English of both the literary and the philosophical aspects of Nietzsche's work, based on his authentic texts, and will be welcomed by all students of modern European thought and Literature.

I was in my twenties when I began recording ideas. It didn’t matter where I was, in my van, on the subway, in a room at home or at school. I used any piece of paper available- a newspaper, a matchbook cover, a tablet. Consequently many of my early writings are lost. This book contains some of my afterthougghts of conversations with others, my reactions to events past and present, and my hopes for my children and all mankind. My challenge to you, dear reader, is that you are provoked to have a healthy body, a productive spirit, and peace of mind. Spread the word. Peace.

Book Short Summary:

Originally published in 1993, The Medieval World of Nature looks at how the natural world was viewed by medieval society. The book presents the argument that the pragmatic medieval view of the natural world of animals and plants, existed simply to serve medieval society. It discusses the medieval concept of animals as food, labour, and sport and addresses how the biblical charge of assuming dominion over animals and plants, was rooted in the medieval sensibility of control. The book also looks at the idea of plants and animals as not only pragmatic, but as allegories within the medieval world, utilizing animals to draw morality tales, which were viewed with as much importance as scientific information. This book provides a unique and interesting look at the everyday medieval world.

Book Short Summary:

First published in 1995. The essays in this volume demonstrate how Victorian women took up various positions along a continuum that ranged from the desire of Shelley’s creature for the power and acceptance it associated with the house to the rejection of Brontë’s heroine of the immobility and powerlessness she ultimately experienced there. More specifically the essays in this volume explore the nature of the Victorian woman’s domestic relations by centring in one activity that most informed her place in what was often the father’s house: housekeeping. The essays in this edition determine how writers, especially novelists, both male and female, used housekeeping to construct, reconstruct, represent, and inscribe the female self and condition. This title will be of interest to students of history and literature.

Book Short Summary:

From amethyst to obsidian, Basic Witches author Jaya Saxena explores the multi-faceted meanings and history behind eleven popular crystals in this relatable personal essay collection. Highly prized for their beauty, crystals can take the shape of jewelry, household objects, and an array of self-care products. But it’s the ideas they stand for that draw people to their raw forms. Like astrology, tarot, and modern witchcraft, crystals help practitioners understand themselves and the wider world around them. In this collection of sharply observed essays, Jaya Saxena reflects on—and challenges—the ideas associated with eleven popular stones, including unconditional love (rose quartz), happiness and success (citrine), balance (amethyst), self-care (black tourmaline), purity (pearl), imposter syndrome (pyrite), toxic positivity (carnelian), change (opals), traditional concepts of marriage (diamonds), presentation versus identity (obsidian), and death (amber). The result is a deeply personal book with universal appeal, exploring how we assign meaning and power to crystals in order to give meaning and power to our lives.

Book Short Summary:

In the early spring, the blooming of the wildflower trillium — also known as "wake-robin" — heralds the return of migrating birds. In Wake-Robin: A Collection of Essays About the Birds, John Burroughs offers absorbing reading for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and anyone interested in ecology and conservation. This 1871 collection of essays by the distinguished naturalist showcases his special gift for combining scientific accuracy with a grand poetic expression. These essays particularly focus on birds of the Adirondacks and the Washington, D.C. region. "What I offer, in fact, is a careful and conscientious record of actual observations and experiences, and is true as it stands written, every word of it. But what has interested me most in ornithology is the pursuit, the chase, the discovery," he notes, adding that "I have tried to present a live bird, a bird in the woods or the fields, with the atmosphere and associations of the place, and not merely a stuffed and labeled specimen." Although scrupulously factual, Burroughs' investigations are less those of a scientist and more in the nature of an experienced and articulate observer who delights in sharing the timeless joys of birdwatching and the outdoors.

Book Short Summary:

From the great thinkers of Ancient Greece to the illustrious forebears of America’s founding to the fearless leaders of free peoples who inspired the twentieth-century world through the disturbing turmoil and despair of two global wars—wars that resulted in genocide, mass destruction, and cultural decay—all of history seems to direct us, respectively, toward the light of truth, the sound of liberty, and the resolve of democracy. Encapsulating this and more with a sweeping series of essays, the exciting new author Evan Lanning takes us up to today’s disturbing world of critical un-thinking, historical illiteracy, unrelenting group-think, and agenda-driven “truth-telling.” In this world of unconstructive, ineffective, and ultimately destructive passions of party spirit, Lanning asks us to consider the limits of our knowledge and to surrender our respective feelings in exchange for the nobler pursuit of truth rooted in fact. Only when we recognize how much we do not know will we be able to find our way through this darkened world. Only when we realize how much humanity cannot know will we understand our need for a deeper source of meaning. In The Global and American Spirit, Lanning attempts to pierce through the darkness of political acquiescence by asserting that we must lift our eyes to the light of Truth and stand upon the shoulders of the greats in order to see the American spirit reborn. Lanning appeals to the American people to take heart once again that “the energy, the faith, [and] the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it.” In short, he asks Americans to rekindle Faith, in order that “the glow from that fire can truly light the world!”

Book Short Summary:

It is not possible for any thinking person to live in such a society as our own without wanting to change it. George Orwell was one of the most celebrated essayists in the English language, and there are quite a few of his essays which are probably better known than any of his other writings apart from Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Stefan Collini presents a collection of Orwell's longer, major essays as well as a selection of shorter pieces, arranged into three categories: Personal/Descriptive, Literary, and Political.

Book Short Summary:

This book may be unpopular in some circles. The exposure of the truth usually is when it has been hidden or distorted (particularly by those who would profit most by its absence or continued distortion). Yet, are we not our brothers keeper? Are we not to assist or enlighten our kinsmen...our fellow human, if we can? Frequently, throughout these essays will be found references to the mystical forces that are indeed a part of our every day existence. I speak of the essence of fair play, charity, right...justice. These forces are more than just charming concepts or notions. They are forces that shape every living souls destiny...forces that we sometimes foolishly play with every day, often with terrible consequences. There are bogus philosophies being practiced that have been and are rapidly and steadily spelling the decline of humankind. I seek, with the readers indulgence and patience, to expose or illuminate our long practiced folly. I expect there to be great opposition, particularly from many of the Black segment of Christendom. For oftentimes, concepts and ideals are attacked and/or ostracized by the masses while being led by profiteers with selfish interests, especially if those ideals are not embraced by the masses. But, are the masses always right? What about a mob? The focal point of these essays is not to lament the plight of the so-called African American. Any number of American minorities (Native American, Hispanics, Oriental, et al) can be exemplary of the casualties of the American (European) encounter, though not necessarily to the same degree. I use the African American to illustrate what has happened to a segment of humanity (many of whom I believe to be descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, the Chosen Ones) whose ancestors dared to violate the laws and hold with contempt those forces which govern our daily existence and bring affront to the Great Spirit, The Mighty One. And if the Chosen of the Most High can receive such a fall from grace, then none are above or beyond reproach. Perhaps now is the time for other considerations...other possibilities.

Book Short Summary:

Conflict in all its guises is usually at the centre of news and whenever wars, natural disasters or divisions erupt, the media are there to report, record and commemorate. This collection of essays explores the complicated relationship between the messengers bringing news of catastrophic upheaval and the recipients of that message. It concentrates on the journalists, photographers and film-makers, reflecting not only the motivations behind their work, but also the psychological consequences of witnessing extreme suffering. The audience interpret the news according to their circumstance, be it with anger sympathy or with compassion-fatigued indifference. The book explores that reaction, which is always more nuanced than anticipated. Finally, the modern communication circle is completed by exploring the potential of the media to diminish conflict. This is demonstrated by the media bringing together communities that are either geographically or historically divided.

Book Short Summary:

Presented here are selected critical essays from five volumes of the Poetik und Hermeneutik series published in Germany by the Wilhelm Fink Verlag of Munich. These essays represent some of the newest and most advanced thinking of fifteen leading scholars in the German-American interdisciplinary school of literary criticism. Until now no single volume has provided such an extensive contemporary treatment of literatures, problems, and methodologies representative of European criticism. The book's significance rests in the potential this new interdisciplinary criticism has for increasing the interplay between the two major critical movements of our day, namely, the objective, pragmatic Anglo-American criticism and the more subjective, phenomenological Continental criticism. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This essay collection from the “bitches gotta eat” blogger, writer on Hulu’s Shrill, and “one of our country’s most fierce and foulmouthed authors” (Amber Tamblyn, Vulture) is sure to make you alternately cackle with glee and cry real tears. Whether Samantha Irby is talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making “adult” budgets; explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette (she's "35-ish, but could easily pass for 60-something"); detailing a disastrous pilgrimage-slash-romantic-vacation to Nashville to scatter her estranged father's ashes; sharing awkward sexual encounters; or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now suburban moms (hang in there for the Costco loot!); she’s as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths.

Book Short Summary:

It’s Not Easy Being Ordinary A Collection of Essays, Quotes, Poetry, Letters, and Extraordinary Art of an Ordinary Person By: Vandella Poe I close my eyes and envision the garden. It is a spring morning, and the air is crisp with the first morning’s frost. I see myself standing in the garden amongst the freshly planted seeds that were started a week ago. They have already begun to extend above and beyond Mother Nature’s dark, moist blanket, earnestly reaching toward the clear blue sky, the warmth of the sun. I had forgotten this photograph was not lost but just a forgotten memory lodged in the depths of my heart, just waiting to be remembered. When Vandella Poe left an abusive relationship and retired, she had a second chance to do what she really wanted to accomplish in life, to leave a mark, something to say, “This was who I was, what I loved doing.” If you have a second chance to do something you love, do it. Life is too short not to. This is who she was and what she enjoyed doing and was passionate about: being an artist.

Book Short Summary:

It has been said before that Africa is one of the richest continents in the world but the poorest and colonialism was blamed for Africa's problems before the continent was liberated. Although some leaders still blame colonialism for the poverty that is ravaging the continent today, it cannot be denied that poor governance, corruption, greed among many other ills are causing Africa's current problems. The essays in this collection The Gods Sleep Through It All discusses Africa's leadership problems and how most countries still rely on former colonisers for help despite boasting of untold natural wealth. The essays discuss the corruption of political parties and politics in Africa and question why African countries readily open their arms to countries like China but close borders to people from other African countries.

Book Short Summary:

Why was Leibniz so deeply interested in signs and language? What role does this interest play in his philosophical system? In the essays here collected, Marcello Dascal attempts to tackle these questions from different angles. They bring to light aspects of Leibniz’s work on these and related issues which have been so far neglected. As a rule they take as their starting point Leibniz's early writings (some unpublished, some only available in Latin) on characters and cognition, on definition, on truth, on memory, on grammar, on the specific problems of religious discourse, and so on. An effort has been made to relate the views expressed in these writings both to Leibniz’ more mature views, and to the conceptions prevailing in his time, as well as in preceding and following periods. The common thread running through all the essays is to what extent language and signs, in their most varied forms, are related to cognitive processes, according to Leibniz and his contemporaries.

Book Short Summary:

In what sense does time exist? Is it an objective feature of the external world? Or is its real nature dependent on the way man experiences it? Has modern science brought us closer to the answer to St. Augustine's exasperated outcry, 'What, then, is time?' ? Ever since Aristotle, thinkers have been struggling with this most confounding and elusive of philosophical questions. How long does the present moment last? Can we make statements about the future that are clearly true or clearly false? And if so, must we be fatalists? This volume presents twenty-three discussions of the problem of time. A section on classical and modern attempts at definition is followed by four groups of essays drawn largely from contemporary philosophy, each preface with an introduction by the editor. First, in a chapter entitled 'The Static versus the Dynamic Temporal', four philosophers advance solutions to McTaggart's famous proof of time's unreality. In the next two sections, the discussion turns to the meaning of the 'open future' and to the much-debated nature of 'human time'. Finally, modern science and philosophy tackle Zeno's celebrated paradoxes. The essays by Adolf Grnbaum, Nicholas Rescher, and William Barrett are published for the first time in this volume.
